Chaudhry became prime minister in May
1999 but was deposed exactly one year
later in the nation’s third coup, and then
held hostage for 56 days.
He was an early supporter of the fourth
coup staged by military leader Commodore
Frank Bainimarama in December 2006.
However, following the country’s 2009
constitutional crisis, Chaudhry heavily
criticized the regime, labeling Cdre
Bainimarama’s leadership as “autocratic
and dictatorial”.

Jaipur Foot team in FiJi
The world famous “Jaipur Foot”, which
has revolutionised lives of thousands of
disabled across the world, is now going
to help physically impaired people in Fiji.
A technical team of Bhagvan Mahaveer
Viklang Sahayata Samiti [BMVSS] left
for Suva on Wednesday from Jaipur to fit
amputees with Jaipur Foot.
The BMVSS team will equip around 300
amputees with the Jaipur foot. The team,
led by Bhupendra Mehta, will hold an
artificial limb rehabilitation camp in Suva
from June 6 to July 1.
According to the BMVSS, in this camp
artificial limbs including Jaipur Foot and
Jaipur Knee, calipers and artificial hands
would be fitted to about 300 people.
The six-member team includes Dr Pooja
Mukul as medical head and Om Prakash
Sharma as camp manager.
‘’What we learnt that the diabetes is the
main cause of disability in the Island
nation, Dr Mehta said.
He said a Fijian minister and other
officials had visited the BMVSS office
in Jaipur and took much interest in the
artificial limb.
‘’The Fijian government had sent two of its
technicians for training in manufacturing
Jaipur Foot and it is expected that a camp
will be set up in Suva to provide Jaipur
Foot to amputees, Mr Mehta said.
The Fijian government sponsored such
training and Dr Protima Singh of the Fiji
Government would assist the camp in
Suva.

Khaiyum had said. “If it happens here,
someone from the AG’s Office goes and
argues on behalf of the country requesting
extradition.
“It’s provided for under the Extradition
Act.”
Mara is alleged to have fled to Tonga
while still facing charges of sedition and
inciting mutiny.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully
says there will be no change in the
Government’s policy of travel sanctions
against Fiji unless Fiji signals positive
changes surrounding the country’s
human rights and democracy issues.
McCully told the media that while the
Government was keeping an open-door
policy towards Fiji it remained unmoved
over its position.
The International Rugby Board has said
it is hopeful ongoing talks with the New
Zealand Government and Fiji rugby
officials will ensure the best possible
Fijian rugby team plays in this year’s
Rugby World Cup.
The travel sanctions were imposed on
Fiji after the military coup in 2006 to
ban sportspeople or family members
associated with the military or the Fijian
regime from entering New Zealand.
McCully said the IRB understood the
Government’s position ‘’very well and I
think they understand that it won’t change
unless something improves in Fiji’’.
He said the appointment of a senior
military officer as the chairman of the Fiji
Rugby Union was a counterproductive
step.
‘’The style he has brought to the role
with threats and issuing ultimatums to
the New Zealand Government has not
been an especially helpful diplomatic
initiative on his part.
‘’I hope we see a change of tactics.’’
He said the IRB was keeping a close
eye on developments in Fiji and had
an understandable interest in all its
members.
‘’The way forward is to show greater
respect towards human rights and the
restoration of democracy.
‘’If we see those things happening
anything is possible.
‘’I wouldn’t want to portray a sense of
hostility about any of this. It’s with a
sense of sorrow that I speak about the
sanctions and I will keep looking for a
way forward if one can be found.’’
McCully said there would also be some
question about how the sanctions would
impact on the All Blacks vs. Fiji test at
Carisbrook next month.
‘’We haven’t had a dialogue about that
yet.’’

has dismissed a lawsuit
filed against Fiji Water
by an American national
claiming that its label was
misleading.
The court found out that
as a matter of law the
company’s use of a green
drop on its bottle along
with a slogan “Every drop
is green” would not mislead
a reasonable consumer,
reports California Court

The issue in the case
was Fiji Water’s labeling
for its bottled water and
specifically the use of a green drop on the
front of the product which the plaintiff
contended looks similar to environmental
seal of approval.
California court dismissed the complaint
on demurrer, without further leave to
amend.
On appeal the court first observed that
in resolving an appeal based on the
reasonable consumer standard following
a judge trial, some courts have evaluated
whether an advertisement is deceptive as
a pure question of law, while other courts
have generally – though not invariably –
found it to raise a question of fact such
that it cannot be decided on demurrer.

would be misled to think that the green
drop on Fiji Water bottle represents a third

All cigarette and suki sellers in the country
will have until the end of December to
register with the Ministry of Health’s
Tobacco Control and Enforcement Unit.
Health media liaison officer Peni Namotu
confirmed that the registration period
had been extended to ensure that all local
retailers are registered.
The initial registration period was supposed
to have ended in September. “But we have
decided to extend that to allow for everyone
to be registered,” Mr Namotu confirmed.
“We found out that while there were a
lot of retailers in the main urban centres
registering with our unit, the problem has
been those in the rural areas and the islands.
“We need to make sure that everyone
registers with the Ministry because if they
do not then they will face the consequences
if they are caught selling cigarette or suki
without registering.” Mr Namotu said the
Ministry is the only organisation in the
country to issue licenses for the retailing
of cigarettes or tobacco products.
“These licenses are only issued by the Health
Ministry and no other department or council’s
around the country. There are penalties in
place for those who will sell tobacco without
registering after December,” he said.

THE police have not ruled out the
possibility that vehicles stolen and still
missing may have been stripped and sold
as spare parts.
Although the police could not say how
many vehicles were still missing, but they
confirmed that some stolen vehicles have
yet to be found.
Assistant police spokesman Jone
Kalouniviti said there was a possibility
missing vehicles could have ended up in
the spare parts market.
“Such things are generated by the market
and we can’t rule out the possibility of the
missing vehicles ending up in garages and
being stripped,” he said. Mr Kalouniviti
said the police were also concerned that
several stolen vehicle registration plates
remained missing.
He said registration plates could be in the
hands of robbers who may use them as
getaway vehicles.
Mr Kalouniviti said people should be
aware of those missing vehicle registration
plates and inform police if they see them
being used on any vehicle.

can appeal
A MAN ordered by the Magistrates Court
to be extradited to the USA on fraud
charges has been allowed to appeal against
the order in the High Court.
Aneal Maharaj was arrested by the
authorities in Fiji in 2009 following a
request by the United States to extradite
him to answer to fraud and money-
laundering charges.
Mr Maharaj is alleged to have defrauded
people of millions of dollars in the state of
Nevada.
His lawyer Anand Singh asked the court for
time to file an application for a stay order
on the extradition order. He said they were
in the process of making the application.

their produce to the government through
the Agro Marketing Authority (AMA)
or the newly set-up Agro Processing
Association (APA), which has agreed to
buy their produce at a set price.
The Permanent Secretary for Agriculture,
Lieutenant- Colonel Mason Smith,
confirmed this in Suva.
He said his ministry was tasked with
finding markets overseas and other ways
surplus supplies are used.
Lieutenant-Colonel Smith said AMA and
the APA should be able to meet the needs
of farmers as far as the purchase of dalo
was concerned.
“We have now set up the National Crop
and Livestock Council and under this we
have the new Agro Processors Association,
which includes about 38 dalo buying
companies,” he said.

time to reply.
She said the High Court had yet to endorse
the extradition order by the Magistrates
Court.
Justice Daniel Goundar said at the moment
there was no application for a stay order.
The hearing on the stay order will take
place on July 28.
“The APA has agreed that they will buy
dalo from the farm gate at $1.20 per
kilogram for export dalo and $0.80 cents
for other varieties.
“For cassava they have agreed to buy at
$0.40 cents per kilogram.
“Then there is the AMA and farmers
should go to either organisation as far as
the purchase of their dalo is concerned.”

A FARMER from Drasa Dam Road
in Lautoka was astonished when he
discovered an unusual coconut after he
cracked it open.
Prabeen Chand, a retired bus driver, said
he had never come across such a coconut
in his life.
“When I saw it, my first thought was that
it was bad because I saw the split in the
middle, but then I saw that it was the shell
itself which was running right through the
coconut. It was then when I realised the
nut was still good but only different,” he
said.
The unusual nut was from his 10-year-old
coconut tree in his property.
“I was going to scrape the coconut for
our dinner but when I found that it was
different, I knew I had to show this
unusual nut to people,” he added.

Billings also revealed that Vanua Levu
alone contributed 50 per cent of the sea
slug stock and earned some $8 million
(US$4.5 million).
And he said this indicated the big number
of people involved in this business in the
north.
A Fiji chain map of beach-de-mer obtained
by the reporter showed that the north
harvested 50 per cent of the lucrative sea
cucumber export commodity, followed by
the southern Lau group at 30 per cent, and
fishermen from central Viti Levu and those
from the Mamanuca and Yasawa groups
harvested 10 per cent each.
“The purchasing power of the Chinese is
growing fast. Demand for sea cucumber
products as food items, for the preparation
of cosmetic and traditional medicinal
products is growing,” Mr Billings said.
“Information we have gathered shows that
most sea cucumber fisheries in the South
Pacific, and Fiji is of no exception, are
now bust, overfished,” Mr Billings said.
“Annual exports have declined at a very
steady pace over the years,” he said.
Mr Billings represented Fiji at the recent
Asia-Pacific Tropical Sea Cucumber
Symposium in Noumea in February earlier
this year.
“One of the scariest findings from the
report is that it shows our most high-value
targeted species available in Fiji and the
Pacific are gone, and the low-value species
are now being targeted,” he said. “Our
main concerns are depleted stocks that are
remaining in our waters.”
He said this was worrying given that many
in some areas in Fiji, particularly those in
coastal areas, relied heavily on beach-de-
mer trade for their livelihoods.
Mr Billings said immediate actions must be
taken to avoid the collapse of the industry.

The cost of doing business will go up
said the Suva Retailers Association after
learning that business fees could go up by
as much as 86 per cent.
President Himmat Lodhia said there was
not much economic activity and business
owners were finding it hard.
“The cost of doing business has escalated
over the years. Electricity is up, fuel is up,
inflation figures are more than 7 per cent.
“A retailer in Suva is not making much
profit as he used to. Some businesses
are just breaking even. The increase in
business fee will hurt the retailer,” he said.
This view is not shared by the municipal
councils; they believe this will provide the
councils with more income resulting in
increased service delivery.
Suva special administrator Chandu Umaria
said the increase was long overdue.
“SCC will have increased revenue and
better services will be made available,” he
said.

The Fiji Development Bank is the first
to allow loan repayments through mobile
money.
Most of its clients, 55 per cent live in the

FDB chief executive Ratu Deve Toganivalu

alternative and easier options of payments.
“Timely collection of loan payments is
an ongoing challenge for the FDB,” Ratu
Deve said.
“As a development financial institution,
FDB’s charter mandates it to provide a
range of development financial and micro-
finance assistance particularly in rural
areas and the maritime zones.
“Many of these projects are financially
viable and deserve financial assistance.
“However, once loans are disbursed,
receiving timely payments to service the
loans is a constant challenge particularly
from the rural clients who do not have
access to regular banking and financial
services.

An Estonian man has appeared in a Fiji
court accused of assisting the former senior
military official, Ratu Tevita Mara, who
has defected to Tonga.
Risto Hamat has pleaded not guilty to one
count of obstructing the course of justice.

admitted taking Lieutenant Colonel Mara
on a fishing trip to Kadavu, where he
dropped him off.
They say Mr Hamat has no knowledge of

Town Council were allowed increase in
business fees and charges by the Cabinet
of around 86 per cent based on an average
inflation rate of 3.5 per cent.
This increase will be the platform for future
reviews every three to five years. Different
municipalities would increase the charges
on different dates.
A general discount of 15 per cent will be
accorded to new and small business for
the first two years of operation and further
discounts can be approved by the Minister
for Local Government under the existing
provisions of the Local Government Act.

statement, the fees charged under the by-
laws had been enforced since 1993 and
businesses have over time increased their
sales and product prices based on inflation,
market pressures, profits and other
considerations.
“The success of mobile phone-based
money transfer services such as M-PESA
in Kenya prompted FDB to look at this
convenient mobile phone-based payment
option through Vodafone’s M-PAiSA.”
The challenge however would be for
Vodafone to increase its agents in these
rural areas.
“We would like to congratulate FDB for
their bold move in adopting the M-PAiSA
technology as a convenient payment option
for its clients,” Vodafone’s manager of
corporate affairs and M-PAiSA Shalendra
Prasad said.
Mr Prasad said Vodafone was “now being
inundated with enquiries from corporate
bodies that are eager to find out more
about payment options available through
M-PAiSA”.

PAY TOwN rATES VIA M-PAISA APPrOxIMATELY
The Nasinu Town Council became the first
municipality to adopt Vodafone’s M-PAiSA
as a new and convenient mode of payment
for town rates and business license.
This new service is part of the growing list
of services for which payments can now be
made through M-PAiSA.
M-PAiSA enables Vodafone and Inkk
customers to be able to load money in their
m-wallet at an M-PAiSA agent after which
they are able to make various customers to
business (C2B) payment such as electricity
bill payments, loan repayments, TV
subscription and now town rate payments.
In launching the service, the Nasinu Town
Council special administrator Mr Mosese
Kama said, “rate collection is an ongoing
challenge for the council, especially with
over 12,000 ratepayers, the highest in Fiji”.
Over the years, the council has dedicated
substantial resources to recover rate
arrears. Recently, the council undertook
a review exercise to better understand
reasons behind such high levels of rate
defaults. What we have found is that a lot
of rate payers find it a big burden to pay
the entire rate amount as one lump sum
payment.
Many residents that live in the Nasinu
municipality are blue collar workers on
weekly wages and salaries who are not
highly paid. Many of them find it bit
difficult to make lump sum payments to
clear their entire rate amounts.
However, a lot of them are happy to spare
part of their weekly wages and salaries as
installment payments to clear their rates
over a period of time.
The challenge for the council so far has
been to provide a cost effective and widely
accessible medium to make the installment
payments at no extra cost to the residents.

rates in smaller installments over a period
of time at no additional cost.

in this day and age. We are therefore

proud to be the first municipality to offer
this progressive technology as a convenient
payment option for Nasinu residents.”

M-PAiSA is literally on a roll now as more

service through M-PAiSA,” Mr Prasad

“The uptake has been phenomenal with
thousands of customers opting for the
M-PAiSA way to pay their bills. We are

the rate payments through M-PAiSA for

register for M-PAiSA. Thereafter, they can
access the service by dialing *181# and
choose the payment option from the menu
and follow the steps.
Once the payment is processed, the
customer will receive an electronic receipt
in the form of a SMS or text message
that will be the customer’s evidence of
payment. The receipt will carry date and
time of payment, receipt number, amount
and rate assessment number for which the
payment has been done.
Significance of Mangalsutra
The Mangalsutra is a symbol of a
married woman in India. It is basically
a yellow colored thread in which black
and golden beads are weaved together.
It can also be a golden chain with
black beads into it. It is similar to the

As the Air Pacific’s French built turbo
prop ATR 42 glided into Apia’s Faleolo
International Airport, I was overjoyed with
the prospect of visiting Nukualofa. The
year was 1988, in the aftermath of Sitiveni
Rabuka’s coup in Fiji which had an interim
government. I was an internal auditor with
the Carpenter Group of Companies which
owned Morris Hedstrom (MH) stores in Fiji,
Apia (Molesi), and Nukualofa. I, together
with my fellow auditor Chattur Singh was
scheduled to audit MH Nukualofa after the
Apia stop.
However, this dream of visiting Tonga was
dashed when Tonga imposed a racially
discriminatory rule that Indo Fijians
from Fiji were prohibited from entering
the Kingdom. Then, Fiji’s interim Prime
Minister was Ratu Ului’s father, Ratu Sir
Kamisese Mara who was defeated in 1987
Fiji’s elections by Dr Timoci Bavadra’s
Fiji Labour Party. Bavadra’s government
was overthrown on 14 May, 1987 in a coup
executed by Rabuka just after a month
in power. It had been widely speculated
and also exposed by Rabuka that Ratu Sir
Kamisese Mara was aware of the coup
and had given his blessings for the rape
of democracy in favour of indigenous
superiority and ethno nationalism. Mara
Senior claimed he accepted the position
of Fiji’s Interim Prime Minister because
he could not stand by and watch his house
burning.
Ratu Sir Kamisese remained silent and failed
to raise any objection against this blatant
racism by his cousins in Tonga against half
of his subjects in Fiji. It therefore should
not now come as a surprise at accusations
that the Tongan government aided and
abetted the escape of Ratu Ului to Tonga
by breaching Fiji waters, supposedly in a
sea rescue mission. The evidence from the
murky waters suggests that Ratu Ului may
be less than honest about his escapade. His
checking into a hotel under a false name,
hiding his identity, the customary protocols
of fishing alone by a chief, and the failure of
respective New Zealand and Fiji navies to
detect any distress signals indicate that the
truth is somewhere out there.

was found guilty on seven counts, including
human trafficking, keeping a brothel and
trading in prostitution was sentenced to
10 years imprisonment by Justice Robert
Shuster in the Nuku’alofa Supreme Court.

Justice Shuster described Liu’s criminal
activities as heinous and appalling and the
worst in the criminal calendar.
He said that the maximum sentence for the
trafficking of women and girls into Europe
and forced them to work as prostitutes is
23 years. In the United States it is 12 to 15
years imprisonment.
Justice Shuster said that evidence during
the hearing held from January to February
revealed that Liu met her two victims in
China and persuaded them to come to
Tonga and work in a restaurant, though she
did not own a restaurant.
When the two women arrived in Tonga Liu
took their passports away.
“I have two people who tell me the same
thing that they were brought by you and
kept in a house for sexual purposes.
“These two women you chose were both
separated and had a child and are vulnerable
when they come to another country but it is
right for that country they go to, to protect
everybody and every victim.”
He sentenced Liu to 10 years imprisonment
to deter others from such crimes.
“I decline to suspend any part of this
sentence because this is an appalling
crime,” concluded Justice Shuster.
Liu who pleaded not guilty to all counts in
her evidence strongly denied the prostitution
claimed by the two victims before trial by a
judge alone, Justice Shuster.

GNS Science warns.
Christchurch City councilors and

The advice from GNS Science was for a 23

A uS man who tried to flirt with a young
woman on board a plane by bragging

to knock out the entire aircraft found
himself arrested and banned for life

Bryan Sisco, 40, allegedly knocked back
five whiskey-and-cokes at an airport bar in
Dallas before boarding his Atlanta-bound
plane, on which he took a wrong seat and
found himself next to Danielle Valimont,
23, from Griffin, US, The Commercial
Appeal reported.
When confronted by a flight attendant
about being in the wrong seat, Sisco said
he and Valimont were newlyweds.
The 40-year-old then whipped out a
butane lighter, sparking it near Valimont’s
legs, and boasted that he had a canister
that contained enough gas to knock out
everyone on the plane.
In further attempt to impress her, Sisco also
claimed he was an architect and a federal
marshal, and his father was in the CIA,
according to Valimont who wrote about the
incident on her blog.
“He was very crass with his language and
called me “B****” and “F*****” in a
friendly, joking way – if that’s possible”
The quick-thinking Valimont pretended
she needed the bathroom and managed to
alert a flight attendant.
A passenger has landed in trouble
The flight was diverted to Memphis, where
a baffled Sisco, who had been sleeping
and oblivious to the unfolding panic, was
arrested by officers who boarded the plane.
“I fell asleep, and woke up in handcuffs in
Memphis with the FBI questioning me. ... I
couldn’t even feel my thumb, the handcuffs
were put on so tight,” he said.
Sisco added that he was puzzled by the
fuss which came about “because of that
one comment”.
“We were talking, sharing M&Ms, eating
chocolate, having a good time,” he said.
“I fabricated some truths about myself.
... I thought we were getting along pretty
good.”
The flight continued on its way to Atlanta,
while Sisco was released on a $10,000
bond. He faces charges of carrying a
weapon or explosive on an aircraft.

has suggested that for the first time
married couples are now a minority
in the country.
In the 2010 census, married couples
represented 48 percent of all households,
which is down from 52 percent from the
last census.
Experts attributed the change to a fast-
growing older population who are more
likely to be divorced or widowed, and
young people delaying marriage amid
fears of not being able to hang on to
a job and a shift away from having
children at a young age, reports say.
Meanwhile, the number of opposite-
sex couples living together rather than
marrying jumped 13 per cent from 2009
to 7.5million.
The median age for first marriages has
climbed steadily in the U.S. since the
1960s, when men got married at about
23 and women at 20. Now men are
waiting until they are 28 and women
until 26.
Americans are also living longer, with
an average life expectancy of 78, nearly

a bedroom where three children were and
accidentally fired the weapon.

two other children in the bedroom, who
are aged between 2 and 10, were not
injured, but it remains unclear how the
boy got access to the weapon.
Fresno Police said the father of the
children was in the living room when the
shooting happened, but their mother and
an older child were not at home. Multiple
weapons were recovered from the house,
but it is unknown where they were kept.
As of Monday, police have not arrested
or charged the father of the children,
although some neighbors were upset
and believed the father should be held
responsible. “They made a big mistake.

since efforts to save the endangered New
Zealand bird began at a North Island
sanctuary, wildlife authorities say.
The male kiwi chick, named Manukura –
meaning “of chiefly status” in the Maori
language – hatched on May 1 at the
Pukaha sanctuary north of Wellington, the
Department of Conservation (DOC) said
this week.
“As far as we know, this is the first all-
white chick to be hatched in captivity,”
Pukaha chairman Bob Francis said.
Kiwis are normally brown but Francis
said birds in the gene pool that Manukura
came from had white flecks in their
plumage, giving rise to the occasional all-
white specimen. He said the bird was not
an albino.
It was one of 14 chicks hatched at the
sanctuary this year, compared
with an average of two a year
between 2005 and 2010.
“(We) were blown away
by the number of chicks
produced so quickly,”
Francis said.
The flightless kiwi, the avian
symbol of New Zealand,
is threatened by a host
of introduced predators
including rats, cats, dogs,
ferrets and possums.
DOC estimates there are
fewer than 70,000 left in
New Zealand, and several sub-species are
listed as critically endangered.
The Pukaha sanctuary, established in
2001, is a forest where wildlife officers
have laid traps and baits to minimize
predator numbers.
The adult birds roam free and any eggs
that are produced go to a kiwi nursery,
where the chicks are cared for until they
are old enough to be released into the
forest.
However, because efforts to eliminate
feral pests have not been totally
successful, DOC said the white kiwi may
have to spend his life in captivity.
“To potential predators, white feathers
could stick out like a sore thumb,”
DOC area manager Chris Lester said.
“We recognize the need to take that into
account when decided how best to keep
Manukura safe in future.”

Story of Shri Satyanarayan Swamiji

CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK
Lord Satyanarayanji was pleased with
Leelawati’s prayer & the fast. One day, he
told King Chandraketu in his dream, “Oh
King, Yoy must release the merchant & his
son-in-law from the dark cell, tomorrow
morning. Give them their wealth & set them
free. If you do not do so, your kingdom
will be destroyed.” In the morning, the
king called the court people & told them
about the dream.
The court people after hearing about the
dream, came to the conclusion to free the
merchant & his son-in-law.They asked
the guards to bring the prisoners from the
dark cell. King Chandraketu gave them
good clothes, all their wealth & plus some
more & set them free. The king told them
that due to their wrong-doings, they had to
undergo this suffering, but now there was
nothing to fear & they could go back home.
They bowed down to the king & left home-
wards.
This chapter of Lord Satyanarayanji is

Chapter 4 :

be true”. So saying, he went from there &
sat on the bank of the river.
When the Lord went away, the boat started
to rise higher in the water. The merchant
was surprised at this. When he went to
check in the boat, he saw that his boat was
he fainted. When he came to his senses,
he was very much worried. He said “How
could this happen?” At this, his son-in-law
told him, “Do not cry over this. All has
happened because you spoke harshly to
the old man & lied to him. Still, nothing
is lost. You could go back to him & ask for
forgiveness & he will set everything right.
The merchant, after hearing the words
of his son-in-law went in search of the
old man. He bowed down before him
& with respect said, “Oh Lord, please
forgive me for the false harsh words that
I have spoken to you.” So saying, he
bowed down with tears of sorrow in his
eyes. When the Lord, saw the merchant
in his state of sorrowness & crying for
forgiveness, he said, “Do not cry. Listen
to me. Oh foolish person, due to your false
promise, you have seen all this sorrow &
suffering.” On hearing the Lord say this,
the merchant said, “Oh Lord, Nobody can
recognize your maya. Not even the Gods
or Brahmins know your ways & forms. I
promise that I will pray to you”, so saying
he asked for forgiveness. He said, “Please
wealth once again, like before.”

life support in the next 24 hours based on

15 minutes while his mother took his
brothers to school.
The young boy was in hospital after being
rescued by a neighbour who discovered him
in a rear sunroom overcome by fumes.

Royal Perth hospital.
Suhail Ahmad Khan Durani is on trial
accused of sexually assaulting the 20-year-
old woman in February last year.
The court has been told the woman has

It is alleged the assaults took place while

emergency department and after she had

It may have been one of the wettest springs
ever recorded, but new lawn sprinkling
restrictions came into effect across Metro
Vancouver on Wednesday banning any
watering, except between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Metro Vancouver spokesman Bill Morrell
says there is already a high demand for
water at night and lawn sprinkling stresses

“What we have introduced this year is a
focus of sprinkling in the morning. The
evening period that people may have got
used to in the past is no longer available,”
he said.
Limits on lawn sprinkling also serve to defer

when Metro Vancouver delivered more
than two billion litres of water that day.
That was almost double the year-round
average of about 1.1 billion litres per day,
according to a statement released by Metro
Vancouver.

Newlyweds William and Kate will pay
special homage to Canada’s military
during their whirlwind nine-day royal
tour, which kicks off in late June.
The royal couple will travel across the
country from June 30 to July 8. The pair
will visit Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City,
Charlottetown, Yellowknife and Calgary.
Along the way, they’ll lay a wreath at
the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the
National War Memorial in Ottawa and
visit with veterans at the city’s Canadian
War Museum, travel to Quebec City on
HMCS Montreal and attend a ceremony
with the Royal 22nd Regiment, spend
time in Yellowknife with the Canadian
Rangers, and wrap up with remarks in
Calgary about Afghan veterans.
Both countries have forces in Afghanistan
and William’s brother, Prince Harry, has
been on tours of duty there.
Prince William, trained as a Royal Air
Force search-and-rescue pilot, will also
watch a Coast Guard rescue demonstration
during his time in P.E.I.

A Calgary doctor has been found guilty of
billing the province for deceased patients.
Kelly Eby, a spokesman with the College
of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
(CPSA), said over the past eight years she
hasn’t seen a case similar to Dr. John van
Olm’s, whose practice has been suspended
for at least three months.
“Does that mean it’s rare? I hope so,” said
Eby.
The college found van Olm’s actions
unbecoming after he billed the province
for treating up to 185 patients a day, some
for patients who had already died.
Between 2006 and 2007, there were
12 dates when the number of patients
reportedly seen and billed for ranged from
149 to 185 per day, far more than possible.
“He submitted billings to Alberta Health
Care Insurance Plan for services he
claimed to have provided to patients when

appropriate care to each patient,” the
college said in a release.
Van Olm was also found guilty of creating

money from two unnamed patients. His
suspension began May 5 following a

Vancouver takes game one in a dramatic fashion
wednesday night’s game appeared
destined for overtime. less than 20
seconds remained in regulation. neither
team had scored a goal. the power plays
had gone a total of 0 for 12. the goalies
were putting on a puck-stopping clinic.
The hockey gods said otherwise.
The Bruins and Canucks had played
each other evenly, albeit raggedly, for
40 minutes. But in the third period, the
Canucks brought their best stuff.
Alexander Edler rattled a shot off the
crossbar. Jannik Hansen had a breakaway
that Tim Thomas stopped, then made sure
to cover with his glove as he was sliding
back toward the goal line. The Canucks
whistled 14 pucks on the Bruins goalie
in the period, with a third of them being
Grade A scoring chances.
So after playing their most legless period
of the three, the Bruins probably deserved

“We need to reward [Thomas] for his
efforts,’’ said Milan Lucic. “That’s the
bottom line.’’
The winning goal showcased Ryan Kesler
at his best. Kesler played 24:23, most of
any forward, and won the pivotal puck
battle. From deep in his zone, Kevin Bieksa
started the breakout with a diagonal pass
that glanced off the left-side wall. Johnny
Boychuk, the right-side defenseman on
the play, read the carom and stepped up,
hoping to go the other way.
“Long pass up,’’ Boychuk recalled. “I just
tried to stop the pass. I don’t know where
the puck went after that.’’
As Boychuk sprinted for the puck, Kesler
joined the race and beat the defenseman to
it. Kesler was very close to being offside.
But with Boychuk up the ice and out of the
picture, Kesler settled the puck along the
wall. Rich Peverley closed on Kesler. But
the center spotted Hansen, who had just
rolled over the boards, streaking toward
the slot.
Kesler connected with Hansen. Torres,
who had circled back in the neutral zone,
now dashed over the blue line with speed.
Hansen and Torres had a two-on-one
against Chara.
“Some kind of a broken play on the blue
line,’’ said Chara. “I don’t know if it was a
turnover. Obviously [Kesler] made a nice
play hitting the late guy, the guy coming to
the net. Very unfortunate.’’
Chara hit the deck to block Hansen’s pass,
but the dish was already underneath him
and headed for Torres’s blade.
Thomas, brilliant throughout the night, had
been tracking Hansen. The puck carrier
was far too close to the net for Thomas not
to respect his shot. So when Hansen passed
instead, Thomas was somewhat surprised.
When Thomas saw Torres, it was too late.
“I thought we played a real good road
game,’’ Julien said. “The situation we
were in after two periods, I didn’t mind it,
especially against this hockey club.
“I thought our PK did a great job against
their power play. Timmy made the big
saves when we had to. For two periods, I
was pretty pleased.
“But obviously in the third period, they
were the better team. They ended up
scoring that goal. It got away from us. But
we’ve still got an opportunity in the next
game to hopefully get that one and get the
home-ice advantage.’’
