Huntington Beach has a
new exhibit showing real
artifacts from World War I.
During the First World War, Mary
and William Newland lived in
their lovely residence (which dates
from 1898) and farmed 500 acres
of lima beans, celery and sugar
beets. But while they were
farming, "The War to End all
Wars" took place and in the
magnificent Queen Anne Victorian
you can see helmets, mess kits,
wristwatches, a Navy coat and
other mementoes collected by Huntington Beach City Historian
Corporal Timothy Dunsmore and with Huntington Beac
US Historians Darrell Rivers and
Patrick Kreeger and displayed by
the Huntington Beach Historical Society.
Dunsmore served in the US Army in France
and was with the Army Air Service, Field
Artillery and the Signal Corps.
The War that began in 1914, involved
more than 20 countries, and led to more
than 9 million soldier deaths. The two
major groups fighting were the Allied
Powers (France, Russia and the United
Kingdom) and the Central Powers
(Germany, Austria-Hungary & the Ottoman
Empire). The United States joined the War
in 1917, assisting the French and British
Forces fighting the German Army on the
Western Front. A cease fire was called in
1918 and officially ended in 1919.

The drug-laced foam was synthe-
sized after Upjohn researchers realized
that a blood pressure drug, Loniten,
had the side-effect of thickening and
darkening hair. Upjohn was later sold
to Pfizer and Rogaine was among the
brands shipped over to Johnson &
Johnson when the company sold its
consumer-focused division in 2006.
Applied to the scalp, the drug is not
touted as a full-on cure for baldness; its
maker does boast of studies where 85%
of male test subjects regrew hair after
four months of twice-daily use.
Also used by women suffering from
hair loss, Rogaine sells roughly $60
million a year, according to health care
analysts at Information Resources.
Earlier this month, the Food and Drug
Administration approved a generic
version made by Perrigo(PRGO_) that
is expected to hit shelves next year.
Viagra: Pfizer(PFE) chemists were
developing a pill to treat cardiovascular
ailments. In 1991 something came up
(literally) that sidetracked those efforts:

found that it tore into pieces and
refused to hold a shape. Undaunted,
they toasted the flakes and were
pleasantly surprised by the result.
After a bit of trial and error, the
brothers decided to use corn, instead
of wheat, as the main ingredient. The
result was deemed tasty enough by
patients that Will founded a company
bearing the Kellogg's(K_) name to sell
their corn flakes.
Dr. John, however, opted out of the
venture, angered that his brother tam-
pered with the healthful nature of the
recipe by adding sugar to the mix. It
should be noted that the elder Kellogg
wasn't so much worried about obesity
or bad teeth; as a staunch practitioner
of sexual abstinence, he theorized that
his corn flakes would suppress physical
urges. Sugar, an aphrodisiac in his
opinion, would undo that.

world eats breakfast, a patient at
Kellogg's sanitarium, C.W. Post, used

Artificial sweeteners: The discovery
and subsequent marketing of saccharin
as an artificial sugar substitute might
never have happened if there had been
an "Employees Must Wash Hands"
sign nearby.
In 1879, a chemist by the name of
Constantin Fahlberg was working with
coal tar. He finished his day's work and
apparently headed home for dinner
without stopping to wash up.
While dining with his wife, the
muck-handed scientist noticed that
everything he ate had a distinctly sweet
taste. Connecting the dots, he realized
his hand residue was the source.
Saccharine's cousin, aspartame, has
a similar accidental history. It was
M. Schlatter, who was trying to fashion
an anti-ulcer medication. It was later
developed and branded as NutraSweet
by Monsanto(MON_) before being
sold for $440 million to J.W. Childs
Equity Partners, a Boston-based private
investment firm, in 2000.
Warfarin: Warfarin, sold by Bristol
Myers Squibb(BMY_) as Coumadin, a
blood thinner used to stave off strokes
and heart attacks, was a rat poison until
its lower-dose benefit to humans was
stumbled upon.
The actual discovery of Warfarin
was itself surprising. Back in 1933,
a Wisconsin farmer dropped in on
Professor Karl Paul Link of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison's
School of Agriculture and asked for
his help in figuring out why local
cows were dying.
The suspect was the type of hay
the cows were eating and the type
of sweet clover added to the feed. It
took Link and his lab until 1941 to
fully identify and isolate the power-
ful anticoagulant killing the cattle.

Alumni Research Foundation, an
organization that helps process, patent
and commercialize inventions by
UW-Madison faculty and staff.
Phosphorous: Penicillin, as most
schoolboys can tell you, was an unex-
pected byproduct of moldy bread. Less
likely to be discussed in a classroom is
that the chemical phosphorus was first
isolated by a would-be alchemist who
thought he could chemically extract
gold from urine, and instead wound up
with a glow-in-the-dark white powder.

from far less nasty sources) is
used today in toothpaste, shampoo,
pesticides and fertilizer.

Chocolate Chip Cookies: Famously,
chocolate chip cookies were a failed
baking experiment. Legend has it that in
1930, Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of

was trying to concoct a chocolate
dessert and was pleasantly surprised
when the chunks failed to melt into the
batter as planned.
The details of this happy accident are
sometimes disputed, with an argument
made that the accomplished cook's
discovery was more premeditated than
accidental. What is not disputed,
however, is that billions of chocolate
chip cookies have been consumed
around the world since that fateful day.
Nestle, the Swiss-owned company
that originally sold Wakefield's choice
of chocolate bits and owns the Toll
House trademark, has since grown into
a global giant, posting sales of $105
billion last year.

you see a power line on the ground, stay far away and

IRWINDALE RACING: Holloway held
position for victory

Chris Holloway had it and kept it all
day at a recent Automobile Club of
Southern California Late Model series
event at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale.
Holloway, from Bakersfield, held the
outside line and handed Brandon Davis
his first loss of the points season at
Irwindale in front of 2,500.
"They call him Superman,"
Holloway said. "We beat Superman
tonight."
Davis, from Huntington Beach, won
the first five points races this season,
and gave Holloway a run for his money
in the 50-lap main event Saturday.
In the final 10 laps, he tried going
underneath, but Holloway held the line
and Davis couldn't pass him.
"The last five laps I had to hold
my breath," Holloway said. "It was

Davis burned up his tires trying to get
by Holloway, and he had to tuck behind
the winner for the final two laps. Dylan
Lupton of Wilton finished third.
Holloway was second to Davis last
week. With Saturday's victory he
moved up to third place in the points,
but is still 60 behind Davis. Davis
equaled a track record by winning the
first five races of the season.
There were two red flags for the
night, both lasting 15 minutes. One
driver, Legends racer Jim Pantier, of
Buena Park, was transported to an area
hospital for observation.
A hard Turn 2 accident led to a
15-minute red flag that took out four
cars on the opening lap.

The Threat of Falling Loan Limits Friends of the Library June Authors’ Luncheon

There are currently three levels of loan limits by dollar
amount. These limits determine the types of programs
available to a consumer as well as the rates they can ex-
pect on each of those programs.
Most everyone is familiar with the conforming loan
limit of $417,000. There are sub-
stantially more options available
to those with loan amounts
below this limit. Moreover, the
rates on these programs are al-
ways lower that on loan amounts
of $417,001 and higher. The rea-
son is these loans are able to ob-
tain full backing from Fannie Mae
and Freddie Mac. Loans which are
eligible to obtain the backing of
these government-sponsored enter-
prises pose less risk for the banks
issuing the loans. And less risk for
the bank translates to a lower rate for the consumer.
There are certain geographic areas where it simply
costs more to live and $417,000 is not enough to cover
the average cost of housing. Fannie and Freddie recog-
nize this and have established higher loan limits for cer-
tain counties. Some of the highest loan limits are here in
California and include the counties of Monterey, Los An-
geles, Orange, Alameda, Ventura, Santa Clara and San
Francisco. In these counties, Fannie and Freddie will sup-
port conventional loans up to a limit of $729,750.
Loan amounts between $417,001 and the county limit
are known as “high-balance” or “super-conforming”
loans. High-balance programs are only slightly more re-
stricted than their smaller conforming brethren. The dif-
ference in rates is also modest – typically less than 0.25%
for loans below $417,000 and the super- conforming.
However, these middle-tier programs are vastly more
competitive than those whose loan amounts exceed the
high-balance limit for a given county. Loans which ex-
ceed the high-balance limit, also known as “Jumbo”
loans, are the most restrictive in terms of options. The
rates on Jumbo products are also much higher – some-
times as much as a full 1% higher than their conforming
counterparts.
In 2008, congress passed a series of bills aimed to pre-
vent further collapse of the housing market. The Eco-
nomic Stimulus Act of 2008 established the current loan
limits which governs today’s
lending environment. Unless
additional action is taken by
Congress to extend these
measures, loan limits will be
reduced in 250 counties
throughout the United States.
Counties whose limits are al-
ready at the $417,000 level
will not be affected. How-
ever, states that have been
recognized as having a
higher cost of living (such
as California) will be dramatically im-
pacted. The change will take place October 1, 2010.
On this date, loan limits will be recalculated according
to a predetermined mathematical equation. The loan limit
will be set at 115% of the median house price for a par-
ticular county, up to a maximum loan limit of $625,500.
Should this happen, it would create another severe chal-
lenge for property values which are already struggling to
stabilize. In many areas, it will cause property values to
plummet even further.
When larger loan amounts become more expensive and
harder to obtain, it means that there are fewer qualified
buyers who are both willing and able to purchase higher-
priced real estate. In order to attract more buyers, these
more expensive homes need to drop their sales prices in
order to attract buyers that can remain in the super-con-
forming range of loans. So when a $900,000 house is
now selling at $800,000, the houses which were formerly
selling at $800,000 become obsolete unless they also
lower their price. Now the $800,000 houses are selling
for $700,000, causing the $700,000 homes to also push
down their sales prices. And the dominoes continue to
fall all the way down to entry-level homes.
Again, some counties will be hit harder than others.
Monterey is scheduled to be the hardest hit county in the
state with a drop in loan limit
of nearly $250,000
(from$729,750 down to
$483,000). Other counties
which currently benefit
from the $729,750
loan limit include
Alameda, Orange,
Los Angeles, and
Ventura counties.

over $100,000 to $625,500 – and that’s if they’re lucky!
San Diego County would see a drop in loan limits of
$151,250. Sonoma County would decrease $141,550.
Napa would drop $137,500. And San Louis Obispo
would shed $126,300 from its current loan limit.
California’s politicians are likely motivated to propose
legislation to extend the current loan limits since their
own properties are mostly among the higher-valued
homes in the area. However, they are likely to be in the
minority. The majority of states are already protected by
the $417,000 limit which is not scheduled to change.
Legislators from these other states majority of more af-
fordable states are likely to oppose any further “bailout”
of California’s real estate. But California is not alone.
Florida, New York, Connecticut, and Washington DC
also have areas which are at risk. Rest assured, this is a
topic that all of us in the housing industry will be watch-
ing very closely over the next 4 months.
