Experience
Affinion Group 1987 a" February 2009
Formerly known as: Trilegiant Corporation/Cendant/Netmarket Group/CUC Internatio
nal
$1.8 billion Company specializing in affinity marketing programs
Performed as a hands-on DBA and managed a System and Development DBA team of 10
specializing in Oracle, MS SQLServer, MySQL and DB2 technologies that support ov
er 30 production databases (over 60 TB of data) for our large corporate systems,
a data warehouse and multiple legacy systems. In addition, managed a team of
4 storage professionals supporting the backup, recovery and storage management o
f corporate systems across several sites in North America totaling approximately
130TB and growing. In addition to managing the team, I also acted as an indivi
dual contributor in storage allocation, performance tuning, capacity planning an
d hardware acquisition and implementation.
Director Data Management (March 2004 a" February 2009)
Accomplishments include:
a Implemented NetApp Decru FC and SCSI encryption appliances across the enterpri
se to encrypt data-at-rest as well as tape backups, enabling the organization to
meet a very aggressive PCI compliance objective.
a Garnered approximately $98,000 in maintenance savings via the championing of t
he implementation of 3PAR technology and consolidation of older EMC storage arra
y technology
a Championed the implementation of Onaro SANScreen product for excellence in SAN
performance and capacity management
a As an individual contributor, I designed, developed and implemented an Oracle
data model and using my Oracle and Unix scripting abilities, married data gather
ed from the Storage Area Network Management infrastructure into an Oracle databa
se creating the ability to capture historical storage growth data for trend and
storage management analysis. This tool was invaluable in showing which areas of
the organization had greatest growth in storage, and also where waste and recla
mation and thus savings could be garnered.
a Evaluated Confio Ignite Oracle performance measurement and tuning tool and neg
otiated favorable enterprise licensing terms enabling the organization to utiliz
e the tool anywhere and wherever needed. Resulted in hours and days of DBA time
saved in resolving performance issues. In addition, I used this database tool
along with the Onaro SAN Screen product when senior level performance tuning and
root cause analysis were required where both Database and Storage technical kno
wledge were necessary to resolve complex production issues.
a Served as final escalation for 7x24 Oracle DBA on call support. Filled in, as
required, to relieve staff.
a Designed and developed unique solutions to growing SOX and PCI compliance audi
ting demands in a production database environment involving financial systems an
d members PII data.
a Participated in and directed application and system infrastructure design deci
sions which had long-term financial and technical implications. For example, de
termination of encryption solutions, Data Warehouse partition design to satisfy
both long term business needs and a reasonable backup and recovery strategy.
a Participated in and reviewed Data Warehouse partition redesign strategy and im
plementation scripts in order to effect the conversion of range partitioned data
to hash partitioning for performance improvements in an 8+TB Data Warehouse.
a Served in a senior DBA capacity for complex tuning issues involving both stora
ge and database performance problems. Involved in root cause analysis for compl
ex Oracle RAC issues on 9i/Veritas/Red Hat Linux and 10G RAC as well as redesign
of indexing strategy for an 8+TB Data Warehouse.
a Provided direction, design and hands-on troubleshooting and database administr
ation for a 10g RAC implementation with ASM on Red Hat Linux. Design decisions
included network hardware and IP configuration regarding public and private netw
ork interfaces as well as determining conversion approach and detailed implement
ation plan for an 8+TB Data Warehouse from 9i RAC to 10g with only 4 hours of al
lowable downtime.

Manager a" Oracle Database Administration (October 1999 a" March 2004)
a Proactively managed and administered 80 database instances, totaling 10 teraby
tes, across development, staging and production platforms on multiple versions o
f Open VMS and Unix.
a Led the DBA activities for high profile client and SOX audits and implemented
changes as required.
a Managed a $20MM inventory of Oracle licenses with an annual maintenance contra
ct in excess of $1MM. Effected a migration of Parallel Server licenses to RAC w
ith a maintenance savings of over $280K.
a Authored a robust backup and recovery strategy for the 10TB of Oracle managed
data. Directed all design, implementation, testing and training activities for
an enterprise-wide deployment of Oracleas RMAN product. Ensured that documentat
ion and staff training was complete and current so that all on-call staff was pr
epared for any database recovery incident.
a Served as Subject Matter Expert providing leadership and architectural directi
on on physical database design to the Oracle DBAs and Unix Engineering staff.

ss guidelines, standards and procedures.
a Maintained availability targets and optimal performance through proactive moni
toring strategies using OEM tools and custom scripting.
a Served as final escalation for 7x24 Oracle DBA on call support. Filled in, as
required, to relieve staff.
a Directed all DBA activity for the successful implementation of a $7MM CRM proj
ect.
a Directed and coordinated all DBA activity for a $25MM project to correct audit
-sited deficiencies in the financial systems.
Senior Oracle Database Administrator (February 1996 a" October 1999)
a Responsible for the creation and database administration of Oracle databases o
n DEC VAX, DEC Alpha and Sun Solaris platforms.
a Installed, configured and provided database administrative support to Oracle 7
.0.1.6, 7.1.3.2 on VAX VMS, 7.3 on Open VMS (AXP) and 7.3.2.3 and 8.04 on Sun So
