Abend ist's, die Sonne ist verschwunden,

     
Evening it-is; the sun has vanished,
(It is evening; and the sun has set,)

Und der Mond strahlt Silberglanz;

    
and the moon beams silver-luster;
(and the moon shines with a silver luster;)

So entfliehn des Lebens schönste Stunden,

     
so flys [the] life's most-pleasant hours,

Fliehn vorüber wie im Tanz.

    
fly past as-if in-a dance.

Bald entflieht des Lebens bunte Szene,

     
Soon will-fly-away [the] life's colorful pageant,

Und der Vorhang rollt herab;

    
and the curtain will-roll down;

Aus ist unser Spiel, des Freundes Träne

      
over is our play, the friend's tears

Fließet schon auf unser Grab.

    

Bald vielleicht (mir weht, wie Westwind leise,

      
Soon, perhaps (on-me blows, like-the west-wind gently,

conclude I this life's pilgrimage,
(I will finish my life's pilgrimage,)

Fliege in das Land der Ruh.

Werdet ihr dann an meinem Grabe weinen,

      
If-will you then by my grave weep,
(If you will weep by my grave,)

Trauernd meine Asche sehn,

   
mournfully on-my ashes to-gaze,

Dann, o Freunde, will ich euch erscheinen

      
then, oh friends, will I to-you appear

Und will himmelauf euch wehn.

    
and will heavenward you waft.
(and will bring you to heaven.)

Schenk auch du ein Tränchen mir

     
Give also you a small-tear for-me,

Und pflücke mir ein Veilchen auf mein Grab,

       
and pluck for-me a small-violet for my grave,

Und mit deinem seelenvollen Blicke

    
and with your soulful gaze,

Sieh dann sanft auf mich herab.

     
look then gently on me below.

Weih mir eine Träne, und ach! schäme
