 From The Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! This week we celebrate the
Ascension of the Lord, an important threshold event
marking the transition from the Resurrection of the Lord
to the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Each year,
as we celebrate this feast, I am reminded of a wonderful
mural painted on the rear wall at Ascension Parish in
Portland, Oregon, where I worked during my first years of
priesthood. The artist, Jose Solis, a member of the
parish, had placed the figure of Jesus ascending into
heaven right above the doors of the sanctuary. The figure
of the Lord is surrounded by His ‘disciples’, each of whom
bears the “face” of an actual member of the parish!
Parishioners leaving church every Sunday are definitely
aware of the Ascension of the Lord—and their own
‘role’ in it.
Mr. Solis understood the meaning and the Ascension of
the Lord clearly and depicted it in a strikingly poignant
manner. Yes, the Lord is risen and has returned to the
Father. And, yes, we ourselves, as contemporary disciples
of the Lord, play an important part in the event and in its
consequences, but not just as bystanders. Both of the
major readings from the lectionary this weekend
reinforce the responsibilities of our dual citizenship: both
in ‘heaven’ with the Lord and right here ‘down to earth’
as His disciples in our world.
“Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at
the sky?” (Acts 1: 11). The first reading, from the Acts of
the Apostles, opens with this great one-liner. These first
disciples of Jesus are left gaping, open-mouthed as they
witness the return of Jesus to the Father. Then, they are
shaken out of their apparent stupor: “Okay, Everyone, it’s
time to get back to work!” The day’s reading from the
Gospel of Matthew (28:19-20) both refines and reinforces
this message that we need to put into practice the faith
that we have received in and through the Risen Lord. In
His concluding words to His followers Jesus himself tells
them (and us): “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe
all that I have commanded you.”
So, here we are, living ourselves at the threshold, in the
tension between our deepest and highest spiritual hopes
and aspirations-- and the apparently mundane ‘stuff’ of
everyday life. Or, as one author put it, “After the ecstasy,
comes the laundry.” But, our day jobs are only
apparently mundane. All of our attitudes, decisions, and
actions have the potential to carry new and heightened
significance through the transforming power of the Holy
Spirit. More about that next week as we approach the
Feast of Pentecost.
Elsewhere in the Parish
Thanks to all who participated in our Memorial Day
liturgy, offered in memory and honor of all the men and
women in our military services who have given their lives
so that we may continue to enjoy the great gifts of peace
and freedom in our country. Special thanks to our music
ministers and choir members, under the direction of
Lupe Rios, who helped the Mass to be so beautiful. Also,
welcome back to David Coe, who has returned to us
following knee replacement surgery.
Following the Mass, we blessed and rededicated the
Memorial Wall honoring the contributions of our
deceased parishioners. The board has been restored and
refurbished and placed on the north side of the parish
chapel. Many thanks to the Las Madrinas Altar Society,
headed by Margaret Hernandez, and to Javier Marquez
and John Quiroz, members of Knights of Columbus
Council 3162 for completing this important project. Sadly
(for us), Javier, who is retiring from the Marine Corps, will
be leaving the parish this month to reunite with his family
in Texas. His young daughter promised me that they will
be returning to Oceanside at least once a year from now
on, “because, since we’re military, we get into Disneyland
for free!”
Last week, at its monthly meeting, the Comité Hispano
selected its new leadership team: Coordinator Javier
Mendez, sub-coordinator, Jose Maceda, and treasurer,
Maria Diaz. Our thanks to the outgoing team for their
tremendous hard work: Jorge Ponce (coordinator),
Miguel Benitez (sub-coordinator), and Silvia Rivas
(treasurer).

Balancing the Budget
The Federal government does not operate on a balanced
budget and neither does the State of California. This week
we have all come to realize the pain that an organization like
the Old Mission can go through in order to bring finances in
line and let me say that thanks to you, we have not had to
resort to such drastic measures. Thank you for that but
allow me to submit something for your consideration.
Our revenues have decreased over the years of the
recession (not just plate collection but rentals as well). Next
year Casa de Amparo will vacate the spaces around the
McKeon Center reducing our rental income significantly
(actually they are vacating some space next month). Can
you help us begin to address this shortfall and balance our
budget? If you are not currently giving to the operation of
the parish through a weekly offering can you start with just a
dollar or two? If you are currently giving 5 dollars can you
increase your gift by two or three dollars each week and if
you are a family giving at a higher level can you sacrifice to
add just a few dollars to your weekly gift? We are a very
large parish and it is through the participation of ALL of our
families that we are successful.
Speaking of families, stewardship of treasure is one of the
lasting gifts that we as parents can pass on to our children.
Even if it is just a dollar or a few, the fact that you place that
money in an envelope and your children see it go into the
basket is an everlasting lesson. If you do not use envelopes
or contribute through EFT and would like to start please
contact the office. We will be glad to help. Let’s kill two
birds with one stone. We can teach our children a life-lesson
and help the parish balance its budget.

Audio/Visual Ministry:
We need your help with the Audio/Visual
Ministry. No experience needed we will train and
support you. If you can use a TV remote control
you can volunteer with the A/V Ministry. Teens
are encouraged to volunteer.

Ministers to the Sick and Homebound
Meeting: Ministers, we will have our next ministry meeting

communion to Tri-City hospital and other locations, if you

PARISH OFFICE VOLUNTEERS

The Spirituality of Work: Homemakers
by William Droel
In the United States in the past four decades, the meaning
of the term homemaker has changed and expanded. Today
we consider all people who have any responsibility for
creating and maintaining a household to be a homemaker
because they create a physical, emotional and spiritual
haven for others.
William L. Droel in his booklet The Spirituality of Work:
Homemakers suggests a concept--the spirituality of work--
around which the homemaker can begin to explore the
meaning of this role. He suggests places, people and
practices where that spirituality, that style of awareness,
might uncover the meaning. He also suggests periodic
meditation and reflection during the homemaker’s journey.
And the final section offers ways for the homemaker to find
assistance and support from others.
This short book contains a wealth of information and
practical suggestions to aid today’s homemaker in the quest
for meaning from their essential work in society. As Clyde
Evans says in the forward, “ If all work – all labor – is
participation in God’s on going creation of this world, then
homemaking is . . . the quintessential form of work. For if
home and family and community is the most elemental,
fundamental feature of the kind of world God wants, then
the work associated with creating a home most
fundamentally represents co-creating with God, who has so
consistently and imaginatively tried to be a Home for us.”

Mass Text by Fr. Paul Turner. The cost of the book is $1.50.

Querida Familia Parroquial,
¡Paz y todo bien! Esta semana nosotros celebramos la
Ascensión del Señor, un acontecimiento importante que
marca la transición de la Resurrección del Señor a la llegada
del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés. Todos los años, al noso-
tros celebrar esta fiesta, se me recuerda un mural maravillo-
so pintado en la pared trasera de la Parroquia de la Ascen-
sión en Portland, Oregon donde trabajé durante mis prime-
ros años de sacerdocio. El artista, José Solís, un miembro de
la parroquia, había colocado la figura de Jesús ascendiendo
en la gloria exactamente sobre la puerta del santuario. ¡La
figura del Señor está rodeada por Sus ‘discípulos’, cada uno
de ellos, lleva la “faz” de un miembro actual de la parroquia!
Los feligreses al salir de la iglesia cada domingo están cons-
cientes, definitivamente, de la Ascensión del Señor—y de su
papel en ella.
El Señor Solís entiende claramente el significado y la As-
censión del Señor y lo mostró de manera llamativa y conmo-
vedora. Si, el Señor ha resucitado y ha regresado al Padre y,
si, nosotros, como discípulos contemporáneos del Señor,
jugamos un papel importante en el evento en sus conse-
cuencias, pero no solo como espectadores. Las dos lecturas
principales del leccionario de este fin de semana enfatizan
las responsabilidades de la ciudadanía doble: las dos en la
“gloria” con el Señor y aquí “abajo en la tierra” como Sus
discípulos en nuestro mundo.
“Galileos, ¿qué hacen allí parados, mirando al cielo?
(Hechos 1:11). La lectura primera de Hechos de los Apósto-
les, se inicia con estas palabras únicas. Estos discípulos pri-
meros de Jesús se quedan perplejos, con la boca abierta, al
presenciar el regreso de Jesús al padre. Luego, ellos son mo-
vidos fuera de su asombro: “¡Muy bien, todos ustedes, ya es
tiempo de regresar al trabajo!” La lectura del día de Mateo
(28:19-20) refina y concreta este mensaje que nosotros de-
bemos de poner en práctica, la fe que hemos recibido en y a
través del Señor Resucitado. En Sus palabras finales a Sus
seguidores, Jesús mismo les dice (y a nosotros): “Vayan
pues, y enseñen a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el
nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, y enseñán-
dole a cumplir todo cuanto yo les he mandado.”
Así pues, aquí estamos, viviendo en el umbral, en la ten-
sión entre nuestras esperanzas espirituales y aspiraciones
elevadas y profundas y las “cosas” mundanas aparentemen-
te de la vida diaria. O como un autor dijo, “Después del éxta-
sis, viene la lavandera.” Pero, nuestro día y nuestras accio-
nes son solo mundanas aparentemente. Todas nuestras acti-
tudes, nuestras decisiones y nuestras acciones tienen el po-
tencial de llevar un significado nuevo y elevado a través del
poder transformador del Espíritu Santo. La semana próxima
tendremos más al acercarnos a la Fiesta de Pentecostés.

A través de la Parroquia
Muchas gracias a todos los que participaron en la liturgia del
Día de Memoria, ofrecido en honor y memoria de todos los
hombres y mujeres en nuestro servicio militar quienes han
ofrecido sus vidas para nosotros poder continuar disfrutan-
do los regalos grandes de paz y de libertad en nuestra patria.
Gracias especiales a nuestros ministros de música y a los
miembros del coro, bajo la dirección de Lupe Rios, que
ayudó a que la Misa fuera tan hermosa. También le damos la
bienvenida a David Coe, que ha regresado a nosotros des-
pués de su cirugía.
Al final de la Misa, nosotros bendijimos y re dedicamos el
Mural Memorial que honra la contribución de nuestros feli-
greses fallecidos. El mural ha sido restaurado y restablecido
y colocado al norte de nuestra capilla parroquial. Muchas
gracias a Las Madrinas, dirigida por Margaret Hernández y a
Javier Márquez y John Quiroz, miembros de Los Caballeros
de Colón, del Concilio 3162 por completar este proyecto
importante. Lamentablemente (para nosotros), Javier, quien
se está retirando del “Marine Corps”, dejará esta parroquia
este mes para unirse con sus familias en Texas. Su hija me-
nor me prometió que ellos regresarán a Oceanside por lo
menos, una vez al año, desde hoy, “¡porque, como él es mili-
tar, nosotros entramos gratis a Disneylandia!”
La semana pasada en su reunión mensual, el Comité His-
pano seleccionó un equipo nuevo: Coordinador, Javier
Méndez, Sub-Coordinador, José Maceda, y Tesorera, María
Díaz. Muchas gracias al equipo saliente por su trabajo tre-
mendo: Jorge Ponce (coordinador), Miguel Benítez (sub-
coordinador), y Silvia Rivas (tesorera.)

Equilibrando el Presupuesto
El gobierno Federal no opera con un presupuesto
balanceado y tampoco el Estado de California. Esta semana
todos nos hemos dado cuenta del dolor que una organización
como la Misión Antigua puede pasar para traer las finanzas en
línea y déjenme decirles que gracias a ustedes, nosotros no
hemos tenido que recurrir a medidas tan drásticas. Gracias por
eso y permítanme presentarles algo para su consideración.
Nuestros ingresos han disminuído durante los años de
recesión (no solo la colecta en efectivo pero también en otras
áreas.) El próximo año, Casa de Amparo dejará vacante los es-
pacios alrededor del Centro McKeon reduciendo nuestro ingre-
so significativamente (en realidad ellos comenzarán a desalojar
algunos espacios el mes próximo.) ¿Pueden ustedes ayudarnos
a dirigir este déficit y equilibrar nuestro presupuesto?
