Clark
Image Scientist
360-907-5822 (m)
Summary
Experienced leader in imaging systems hardware development ranging from cell pho
ne cameras to inkjet printers to aerospace reconnaissance systems. Broad expert
ise in optimizing camera subsystem design through system integration of optics,
sensor, signal processor and user; and in measuring subjective image quality, th
e ultimate performance parameter for any system producing images viewed by human
s.
Specialties
* Technical leadership; project management; communication; technical writing; p
roblem-solving; diplomacy.
* Image quality testing methodology; psychophysics; visual psychometrics; digit
al imaging systems analysis for electro-optical, infrared, synthetic aperture ra
dar, and mobile imaging systems.
Work Experience
7/2010 - Present: Microsoft (Contractor) / Image Scientist
Responsible for video and audio hardware device testing, development of performa
nce specifications and optimization of measurement procedures for the Microsoft
Lync (c) (formerly Office Communicator (c)) Logo Program. Contracted by Siemens
IT Solutions.
6/2008 - 10/2009: Vista Point Technologies, a Flextronics Business / Director of
Image Science
Responsible for company-wide subjective image quality evaluation tools and techn
iques.
* Established world-class subjective image quality evaluation program from scra
tch in two months. Provided a critical in-house capability unique in the mobile
imaging industry.
* Designed and supervised subjective evaluations of camera phone imagery for pr
oduct development (evaluation, qualification and tuning of camera subsystems) an
d for competitive analysis at much lower cost and faster turn-around than extern
al market research.
* Demonstrated company's unique capabilities to major cell phone manufacturers.
Technical Chair of the Subjective Evaluation subgroup of the International Imagi
ng Industry Association (I3A) Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) standards initia
tive group, developing a consumer image quality scale for the mobile imaging ind
ustry.
* Subjective evaluation for development of imaging algorithms for optimizing or
correcting exposure, white balance, luminance shading, color uniformity, distor
tion, chromatic aberration, texture smoothing, etc.
1/1996 - 6/2008: Hewlett-Packard / Senior Image Scientist (Master Technologist)
Lead engineer for image science team in Imaging and Printing Division R&D.
* Provided consumer image quality results at huge cost savings over external ma
rket research, and with rapid turn-around, helped streamline the product develop
ment lifecycle.
* Lead development of world-wide company standards and procedures for subjectiv
e image quality evaluation and analysis.
* Established benchmarking methods for product development and competitive anal
ysis. Designed evaluations for assessing image enhancement algorithms, color ma
ps, defect mitigation techniques, and cost-reduced mechanisms for digital photo
printing.
* Developed techniques for user experience testing.
Technical Contributor to the I3A / CPIQ standards initiative group, championing
the need for subjective image quality evaluation for consumer products.
Mentor and advisor for new-hires and interns.
