May 2011
To start out, I have been overwhelmed a little these days with a big company project … so we are a
little late for this eNews. Thank you for your patience. Lots of great things are happening in the
Upcoming Events mailing industry now, so I want to share a few of them with you.
MAILCOM was held in Washington, DC for the first time with an awesome response. Over 2,000
Jun. 10, 2011 mailing industry professionals took advantage of this record-making event. There were over 140
River Downs Outing/ information-packed seminars and workshops. And did I mentioned there was a great line-up of

Winning Quarterback, Doug Williams, who signed autographs and posed for photos in the

Orlando, FL We have had two great meetings this year. Our February 8, 2011,
speaker, Mr. Paul Dreifuss, presented a great message, “Professional Development: Rise to
Stardom.” Paul discussed how you have to continuously develop yourself … you never know
when things will change in your life. Paul traveled all the way from New Jersey, and did you know
he is the MSMA’s National Regional Director assigned to Ohio? What a great message! Then our
April 12th meeting was presented by Mr. Darryl Myers, Postmaster for the Cincinnati District, who
presented “The State of the USPS.” Check out the photos from both amazing events. Our spring
event is scheduled for Friday, June 10, 2011. Instead of a golf outing/meeting, we have planned a
lunch meeting at River Downs. See the details on page 3.
I have been so blessed to serve Ohio Valley MSMA as President the last 4 years. My time as
President is ending, but I leave you in great hands--Mr. Ryan McManus will succeed as President
of Ohio Valley MSMA effective June 2011. I am not going away however; I will serve as
Immediate Past President. I thank you for your support/involvement with our organization.

What does it mean to you to be a member of MSMA?
As a member of MSMA, I can reach out to other members with questions about situations which are new to me and get
answers from people who have experience in the field I am in. They know what I need and how to “get it done”!
How does membership in the MSMA assist your professional development?
Membership in MSMA provides me with opportunities to network with other professionals in the industry. It also
provides the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications.
How did you get involved in the MSMA?
After attending MANY National Postal Forums, I attended a Mailcom show. I was introduced to an organization not
“funded” by the USPS. It is refreshing to get another point of view.
How did you get interested in/involved in the mailing industry?
In 1975, I was at a social event and someone asked me if I wanted a data entry job. This was at the time when all
addresses had to be typed onto cards run through a special machine which transferred the addresses to envelopes. The
woman who hired me moved within a month. I was literally “thrown” into being in charge of the mailing operation with
six part-time employees. I worked approximately one year in this capacity.
Fast forward to 1983, my husband and I started Butler Mailing Services serving small to middle-size customers in
Northwest Ohio. It was truly a FAMILY business with the kids helping stick on labels and moving the product through
the living room! In 1996, we moved the business to Hamilton, Ohio.
What are the key responsibilities of your job?
We are still a family-run business; therefore, we all do “everything.” I run the data department. This includes all data for
our mailing operation. Several years ago, we branched out and started to do “overflow” work for other shops. This
occurs in our shop, remotely, or onsite in the customers’ shops. We now support SAP Business Objects Professional
Edition, SAP Business Objects Business Edition, and BCC Mail Manager 2010.
What has been your most memorable experience in the mailing industry?
I would say my most memorable experiences are the many National Postal Forums and Mailcoms I have attended.
Without those, I wouldn’t have all the national contacts within the postal service and the mailing industry I have today.
What tips do you have for new participants in the mailing field?
Learn as much as you can. Don’t concentrate solely on YOUR job and responsibilities. The more you can learn about
someone else’s job and responsibilities, the faster you’ll be able to “move up in the world” and be more valuable to your
company.
