Miracle Sunday
event planned
for Helping
Hands
On Sunday, June 12th at 6pm, Helping Hands, in conjunction
with the local ministerial association, will be holding a “Miracle
Sunday” event in Ensley Park in Howard City. This event is de-
signed as fundraiser for the Helping Hands building project for its
new facility just south of the VFW Hall in Howard City.
The Miracle Sunday event has been planned in cooperation
with a number of the area churches who have cancelled their Sun-
day evening services in order to participate. The event is open to
the entire community and it is hoped that significant progress will
be made that evening toward the funds necessary for construc-
tion.
It was a little over a year ago that the local ministerial associa-
tion challenged Helping Hands to expand its vision and to strive
to reach out to the growing needs that exist within the community.
Since that time, Helping Hands has hired a ministry services coor-
dinator, purchased land that it now owns free and clear and razed
the old Manor Motel from the site. Much progress has been made
and now Helping Hands is preparing for the exciting next stage of
the construction process.

Pro/Am Veteran
Tournament set
for June 18
On June 18th, 2011 we are celebrating the second annual
“Hookin’ Up Heroes” event. This is a Military Veterans Appre-
ciation Event hosted for the purpose of giving area businesses,
organizations and individuals the opportunity to say “Thanks”
to some great Americans. Our foremost goal is to offer an excit-
ing outdoor recreational adventure to 25-40 disabled and com-
bat Veterans, as well as Active Duty Service Members.
Competitive anglers from around the state will be teaming
with our Heroes, taking them on a BASS style Pro/Am tour-
nament. The tournament will be fished on the Muskegon Riv-
er’s 4700 acre Hardy Pond. We are anticipating a minimum
of 25 boats capable of fishing up to 50 Veterans. The launch
and weigh-in will take place at Newaygo State Park located on
Beech Street in Newaygo County.
In addition to local combat and disabled Veterans, we are
inviting 5 disabled Veterans from the Grand Rapids VA hospi-
tal. Due to the generosity of Great Lakes Lift and Dock and KT
Waterfront Services, we will have a suitable dock and transi-
tion system in place to assist those with mobility impairments.
Tournament launch for this 5 hour adventure begins at
10:00 am. We are also coordinating a military aircraft flyover
at 3:00 pm as the tournament ends and weigh-in begins. This
should be a treat for all.

Army Pvt. David Segard has gradu-
ated from basic combat training at Fort
Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training,
the soldier studied the Army mission,
history, tradition and core values,
physical fitness, and received instruc-
tion and practice in basic combat skills,
military weapons, chemical warfare and
bayonet training, drill and ceremony,
marching, rifle marksmanship, armed
and unarmed combat, map reading,
field tactics, military courtesy, mili-
tary justice system, basic first aid, foot
marches, and field training exercises.
He is the son of David Segard of Ce-
dar Springs. Segard graduated in 2008
from Spring Lake High School.

A 52-year-old Vestaburg man died
as a result of injuries he sustained dur-
ing a Memorial Day weekend crash.
According to the Montcalm County
Sheriff’s Office, Richard Gibbs was pro-
nounced dead at the scene of a single
motor vehicle fatal crash at 11:09 p.m.
on May 28, on Edgar Road, east of Neff
Road, in Home Township.
The vehicle was traveling eastbound
on Edgar when the driver lost control,
leaving the roadway and striking sever-
al trees. Deputies said Gibbs was eject-

tional ministry outreaches are in the
works as well.
While preliminary plans for a
3,200/sf facility have been drawn up,
the cost of construction is still in the
estimating phase. Much of that cost
depends on the magnitude of donat-
ed labor and materials that Helping
Hands hopes to secure for the proj-
ect. In either event, Helping Hands
has a goal to raise $150,000 for the
project to construct a more efficient
facility for serving the needs of the

STAGE DOOR PLAYERS HOLDING AUDITIONS — On Monday and
Tuesday, June 6 and 7, at 8 p.m., Stage Door Players is holding open auditions
for their upcoming summer show entitled Sex Please, We’re Sixty written by
Michael Parker and Susan Parker. This hilarious comedy takes place in Mrs.
Stancliffe’s Rose Cottage Bed and Breakfast where her guests return year after
year. The next door neighbor believes the women come back to visit with him
although Mrs. Stancliffe denies this. The plot thickens when Henry Mitchell,
a retired chemist, enters the picture. Add all these together and you have a
side-splitting show. Plan to come to auditions at the Stage Door Theatre, 1147
Wilcox, White Cloud and have a part in this comedy. Two men and 4 women

Herbs for Everyday Ailments — Would you like to learn more about herbs
and how to use them for everyday health challenges? Join Tonya Nichols for
her presentation “Herbs for Everyday Ailments” on Tuesday, June 7th at 6pm
at the Timothy C Hauenstein Reynolds Township Library. Learn which herbs
can be used for specifi c ailments and the importance of knowing the quality of
the herbs you buy. A demonstration of Muscle Testing, also known as Applied
Kinesiology, will be included to help you determine the herbs that will work best
for you. Tonya Nichols graduated from Ferris State University with a Bachelors
degree in Pharmacy and went on to complete her Doctor of Pharmacy from the
University of Florida . She has also received Natural Wellness Certification
from Clayton College of Natural Health and is currently a student at The
Naturopathic Institute of Therapies & Education in Mt. Pleasant . She has
recently opened her own business, Sisters of Sage, llc, which focuses on
nutrition and natural therapies as a means to health and wellness. This program
is not intended as a substitute for the advice of a licensed physician.
Linda Weger from MMAP, Inc (Medicare/Medicaid Assistance
Program) will be the speaker at the Lakeview Area Seniors Program
on Tuesday, June 7th. Ms. Weger will review programs that are available to
seniors. Her Program entitled “Navigating Medicare” will begin at 2:00 PM at
the Lakeview United Church of Christ. Arrive at 1:00 PM for snacks, cards,

The monthly “Food Pantry” sponsored by the Sheridan VFW Auxiliary will

but do we know how to take care of them? Most of us
don’t think about our tires until they are flat, but not

could save your life.
Check your tire pressure regularly-monthly and be-
fore long trips. You can purchase a traditional pencil
gauge or an easy-to-read digital gauge. (Public pres-
sure gauges are subject to abuse and may not be reli-
able.) Check all four tires when they’re “cold” (be-
fore startup) or after the car has set for at least three
hours. Be sure to occasionally check your spare tire
also. You will find the recommended psi (pounds per
square inch) in the vehicle owner’s manual or on the
driver’s side doorjamb; some vehicles may also have
the information inside the fuel hatch filler flap or the
glove compartment door. DO NOT rely on the pres-

Next check the wear on your tires. If the wear is ex-
cessive, you will see a smoothness that has replaced
tread. A way to check tread wear is to enlist the help
of our 16th president. Place a penny into the tire’s
groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing
toward you. If you can see the top of “honest Abe’s”
head, it’s time for a new tire. Any tread depth less
than 1/16 inch is not only dangerous but is illegal in
many states

longevity of your tires. Do you drive fast? Driving at

Another way to keep your tires in good working order
is to rotate them every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. Rotating
your tires allows them to wear more evenly. If the tires
are original to your vehicle, your owner’s manual will
tell you when to rotate. If they are replacements, the
shop that installed them will recommend a schedule.
Being aware of the age of your tires is essential for
safety. Because aged tires can deteriorate from the in-
side, it is recommended that tires over six years old
not be used. Federal regulations require that a DOT
Tire Identification Number be branded on the tire’s
sidewall. At the end of the ID number is the week and
year of the tire’s production: 2309 or 239 means the
23rd week of 2009. Be aware of the age of your tires
and replace accordingly.
These simple tips require little time when compared
to the consequences of ignoring them. Proper tire
maintenance is just one more step toward making
sure your vehicle runs properly and safely.

You regularly get your car’s oil changed, but
do you ever wonder why?
Sometimes referred to as a car’s “lifeblood,”
oil keeps the engine clean and lubricates its
parts at the same time. Oil also transfers heat
away from the combustion cycle. Sound
complicated? It’s really not.
A car’s engine is full of metal surfaces that

rub together and the friction would tear them
apart. At the same time the oil is keeping
the surfaces apart, it is also transferring heat
away.
OK, so that makes sense, but how can some-
thing as dirty as oil keep a car’s engine clean.
It’s actually pretty cool. An engine operates
by combustion. In the simplest terms, a tiny
explosion occurs, causing a piston to go up
and down. This part of the process and many
others produce many by-products. These
by-products include silicon oxide and acids,
which can be harmful to the engine’s parts.
This is where the cleaning part comes in. Oil
holds these contaminates in suspension and
keeps them from forming on the engine.
You hear the term viscosity associated with
oil. Viscosity is defined as the property of a
fluid that resists the force to cause the fluid

it’s cold and thinner when it’s hot. When
it’s cold (which makes oil thicker), it must
remain thin enough to flow (10); when it’s
hot (which makes oil thinner), it must able
