Survey Tutorial
This tutorial introduces you to the Survey module. It assumes that you are familiar with the
Softdesk’s Core and COGO module. If not, we recommend that you review the COGO Tutorial
before using this one.
The Survey module contains a complete set of tools for the surveyor to process information
including commands for downloading and processing survey information, performing
adjustments on traverse data, and importing those survey points into an AutoCAD drawing. It
also provides additional options for detailing points with figures and line work. Other options
provide transformations from one state plane coordinate system to another, as well as the
capability of calculating directions based on Sun and Starshot information. The tutorial covers a
basic overview of how to go through a typical project in a number of different ways, but will not
cover every option. For additional information, see the Softdesk Survey Reference Manual.
We suggest that you begin with the tutorial and then experiment on your own by trying different
options to see their results.

encountered. Many times the same point is shot more than once, from different setups to ensure
accuracy. The “Parameters” section of the dialogue box allows you to set the tolerances used by
the “Overwrite Status” options. For more information about these options, see “Point Protection”
in “Chapter ??: Project Settings” of the Softdesk Survey Reference Manual.
For the purposes of this tutorial, leave the default settings and select the “OK” button.
The last setting you want to change is the current zone. Zones, as referred to in this package,
reference state plane coordinates and projections. State plane coordinates are a plane-rectangular
coordinate system developed by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. A coordinate system was set
up for each state in the U.S. for use in defining positions of geodetic stations in terms of plane-
rectangular (X and Y) coordinates. Each state is covered by one or more zones. The system
defines a grid for each zone based on a conformal map projection. Depending on the shape of the
state, different projections are used. Two different datums are supported (NAD 27 and NAD 83).
Additional ones can be added if needed. Also included is the worldwide UTM system for use
within the appropriate limits.

Using the Sunshot Editor

Using the Sunshot Editor

The Sunshot Editor is used to calculate an azimuth from solar observations by the hour angle
method. Either a single foresight or a multiple foresight can be used with the Sunshot Editor. For
the purposes of this tutorial, you will use a multiple foresight because this is the more commonly
used solar observation method.
Select the [Sunshot] command from the following location.

Once the above data has been entered correctly, select the “OK” button to exit the dialogue box.

Inputting Survey Data

The Survey module supports several ways to bring observation data into the CAD environment.
You can convert a raw file that has been downloaded from a data collector into a field book file,
or type all of the observations manually at the Survey command line. If you have a batch file or a
converted field book file, the Survey module provides three different ways to import it. In this
tutorial, you will load the same set of data using each of these methods. After each method, you
will erase the information to make sure that you are starting out with a “clean” drawing, and then
enter the data using a different method.

Softdesk Survey Tutorial 21

Converting a RAW File

Converting a RAW File

The first method you will try is converting svtutor.raw file that is supplied with the Survey
module. The svtutor.raw file is in the \sdskproj\svtutor\survey directory. The first step is to create
a field book file from the RAW file.
Pull-down» [Collect] then [Make Field Book]

the arrow keys or a mouse to move around. As the cursor moves, the line and column location
display in the lower right corner. Line 18 displays the following data.
AZ 2 1 80.0000

This line establishes the known direction from point 2 to point 1 as an azimuth of 80°. This
direction is used to orient the traverse on the coordinate system. The direction between points 1
and 2 that you calculated in the Sunshot Editor was a bearing of S 88° 36’m 55”E, which
converts to an azimuth of 91° 23’ 05”.
Use <Backspace> to delete the current azimuth, and type the azimuth that was calculated from
the Sunshot Editor.

Press <Alt F> and type X to exit. Press <Enter> to save your changes.
Now import the field book file into the drawing.
Pull-down» [Collect] then [Import Field Book]

The Field Book Selection dialogue box displays. Because “SVTUTOR” is the only field book file
listed, select the “OK” button to import the file. The following prompts display. Answer “Yes” to
ensure that all points, observations, and figures are erased from the drawing.

Using the Survey Command Line

Using the Survey Command Line

Another way to enter the observations is by using the [Survey Command Line] command. The
Survey commands entered under this command can be used to create points and figures, and to
extract and display information on existing observations. The Survey commands can also be used
to enter traverse and sideshot information. In the following sections, you will manually enter the
same information used in the field book file at the Survey command line. For more information
about the Survey commands, refer to the Softdesk Survey Reference Manual.

All commands used at the Survey command line are referenced in the language.ref file. You
can edit the commands to provide user-definable commands in a familiar format. For example,
the [Angle] command can be invoked by entering “ANGLE,” ANG,” or “A*.” Whatever is
stored in the file can be used. To edit any of these commands, select “Synonyms” from the
Survey Project Settings dialogue box. For more information about the language.ref file, refer to
Appendix E in the Softdesk Survey Reference Manual.

Now select the [Survey Command Line] command.

Pull-down» [CmdLine] then [Survey Command Line]

The “Command” prompt changes to “SURVEY>” and instruments and prism icons display in
the drawing as shown in the following illustration.
SVT22A-I.EPS

Initiating the Survey Command Line

The command is setting up on the last occupied point automatically, and assumes you are using
the last setup.

26 Softdesk Survey Tutorial

Using the Survey Command Line

Next, you will create the traverse. Begin by establishing the angle types as shown below.
SURVEY>ANGLE RIGHT ZENITH
Horizontal angles are RIGHT.
Vertical angles reference ZENITH.

This command alters the current Survey Equipment settings. If the horizontal angle type is set to
“RIGHT” and the vertical angle type is set to “ZENITH” on your current equipment, this
command does not need to be used.
Set the current units for distances and angles.
SURVEY>UNIT FOOT DMS
Linear unit is FOOT.
Angular unit is degrees-minutes-seconds: DMS.

This command overrides the current Survey Units settings. If angles are set to “DMS” and
distances are set to “Feet” for your current units, this command does not need to be used.
Set the temperature for the survey and the reduction of the data.
SURVEY>TEMP 32 C
Temperature recorded at 32.00 degrees Celsius

Set the scale to establish a constant value by which the distances are multiplied.
SURVEY>SF 1
Scale Factor set to 1.000000000000

This command overrides the current applied scale factor set in the Survey Correction Toggles
settings. This value will only be applied if the “Scale Factor” feature is toggled on in the
Correction Settings dialogue box.
The [North East Elevation] command denotes point entry by Northing (N), Easting (E), and
Elevation (Z). This is followed by the point number, the NEZ values, and can include the
description of the point. Note that STA2-PKS is the description of point 2.
SURVEY>NEZ 2 5000 5000 500 STA2-PKS
POINT 2 NORTH: 5000.0000 EAST: 5000.0000 ELEV: 500.0000

When you set a point, the command displays the coordinates and elevation as well as the bearing
and distance from the station to the sideshot. This is because the “Point Course Echo” and “Point
Coordinate Echo” features are toggled “ON” by default in the Survey Command Settings
dialogue box.
The [Station] command denotes the point to set up on for the station. This is then followed by the
height of instrument (above ground) if elevations are to be calculated.
SURVEY>STN 2 5.1
STATION h.i.: 505.1000
POINT 2 NORTH: 5000.0000 EAST: 5000.0000 ELEV: 500.00000

Softdesk Survey Tutorial 27

Using the Survey Command Line

The [Azimuth] command sets a direction between two points for reference or for backsighting a
direction.
SURVEY>AZ 2 1 91.2305
Observed direction: 91-23-05

The [Backsight] command determines what point the instrument (STN) is using for its backsight
reference. If a reference azimuth or bearing was entered from the current setup, this point does
not need to be resident in the drawing.
SURVEY>BS 1

The [Prism] command sets the height of the prism for subsequent sideshots, and is used in the
calculation of elevations.
SURVEY>PRISM 5.04
Prism set to 5.0400

The [Angle Distance Vertical Angle] command denotes that an angle and distance are being
entered, and that a vertical angle is also being entered indicating that the distance is a slope
distance. The horizontal angle is measured from the backsight. The format for this command is
point number, horizontal angle, slope distance, vertical angle, and description of the point.

The [Begin] command signifies the beginning of a figure. The command is followed by the name
to be given to the figure. Figures can represent items such as houses, lots, streets, and walls.
These figures are represented by polylines in the drawing, and are drawn automatically by
connecting each point in consecutive order as it is entered until you enter the [End] command.

At the beginning of this exercise, you defined point 2 as the beginning point for the traverse and
you have come back to the same point. Therefore, the coordinates or elevation of this point must
fall within the allowable tolerance that you defined on the Points Protection Settings dialogue
box. If it does not fall within the tolerance, a tolerance error message like the one below is
displayed.
Tolerance error - Point #: 2
DISTANCE: 0.21 ANGLE(sec): -11.0 COORDINATES: 0.23

The error may be due to random errors that occur while collecting data or an error in the data
input. If you receive an error, press <Enter> at the following prompt to average the points.
Select (Globals/Overwrite/Discard/Renumber/Average) <Average>: (press <Enter>)

The drawing now contains a copy of what was collected in the field, including lines that
represent the property lines and driveways centerlines as shown in the following illustration.

Property Lines and Driveways

As you entered this information at the Survey command line, each command was stored in the
batch.txt file. You can refer to this information if you need to edit the observations or run them
again. You will look at this information in the next section.

Softdesk Survey Tutorial 33

Using the Batch File Commands

Using the Batch File Commands

Another way to input survey data is with the Batch File commands. Because the “Use Batch File”
checkbox is toggled on by default in the Survey Command Settings dialogue box, a batch file was
created as you entered information at the Survey command line.
To recreate the steps you just took in this tutorial, use the [Run Batch File] command. This
command reads in the batch.txt file.

If you made any mistakes inputting the data, you can also use the batch.org file that was
included with the tutorial. If you do this, be sure to change the batch file name in the project
settings to “batch.org.” This file has all of the correct observations.
Pull-down» [CmdLine] then [Batch File] then [Run Batch File]
This command erases all observations.
...Continue (Yes/No)? <No>: Y
Observation Database created.
Auto point numbering has been turned OFF.
Erase all COGO points in drawing (Yes/No)? <No>: Y
Erase all figures (Yes/No)? <No>: Y

The [Run Batch File] command erases all observations, COGO points, and figures in the
drawing. It then reads in the batch.txt file and recreates the information you entered in the
previous section.
In addition to the [Run] command, you can read in the batch.txt file using two other methods.
The [Slow Motion] command reads the file in at a slow rate for easier viewing. The [Walk Thru]
command reads in one shot at a time, allowing you to evaluate each step individually.

Reducing Survey Data

In the following sections, you will look at two ways to reduce the survey data; by adjusting a
traverse loop using the standard adjustment method, and by importing coordinates using the least
squares adjustment method. Each method produces slightly different results. The first method
adjusts the traverse loops and sideshots, and imports the adjusted information into the drawing.
The least squares method adjusts each of the observations so that the sum of the residuals is a
minimum. For more information about the least squares method, refer to Appendix B in the
Softdesk Survey Reference Manual.

Adjusting a Traverse Loop

Adjusting a Traverse Loop

The first method used is the conventional adjustment method. Begin by defining a traverse loop.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Traverse Loops] then [Define Loop]

The command displays the Survey Traverse Loop Definition dialogue box. This dialogue box is
used to define which stations are contained in the loop.
Accept the default loop number, initial backsight point number, occupied points, and final
foresight point number. Enter “SURVEY TUTOR” as the traverse name. The screen should look
like the following illustration.
SVT-24-I.EPS

Survey Traverse Loop Definition Screen

Select the “OK” button to save the traverse loop and exit the dialogue box.
Now check the initial adjustment and make sure there are no field or typographical errors in the
traverse data.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Traverse Loops] then [Check Adjust Loop]
Enter loop number <1>: (press <Enter>)

The Traverse Loop Adjustment Settings dialogue box displays. This dialogue box determines the
settings for the traverse analysis.

Adjusting a Traverse Loop

Select the “Equal Distribution” radio button for the vertical adjustment, then select the “Compass
Rule” radio button for the horizontal adjustment. The dialogue box should look like the following
illustration.
SVT-25-I.EPS

Traverse Loop Adjustment Settings Dialogue Box

Select the “OK” button to save settings and exit the dialogue box.

If the traverse does not meet the closure limits set in the User Specified Limits section of the
Traverse Loop Adjustment dialogue box, then a warning dialogue box will be displayed. If this
happens, then select the “OK” button to continue.

Adjusting a Traverse Loop

The Softdesk Horizontal Traverse Analysis dialogue box displays as shown in the following
illustration.

Softdesk Horizontal Traverse Analysis Dialogue Box

A check using point separation distance to find possible errors is performed. Any angle or
distance errors are reported at the end of the data along with their associated point numbers.
Scroll to the bottom of the data to check for errors. Then, select the “OK” button to go to the
Horizontal Traverse Adjustment and Vertical Adjustment dialogue boxes and review the
adjustment information.

Softdesk Survey Tutorial 37

Using the Least Squares Adjustment Method

The Adjustment Results dialogue box then displays as shown in the following illustration.
SVT-27-I.EPS

Adjustment Results Dialogue Box

Select the “OK” button to return to the graphics screen.

You could then adjust the traverse and sideshots using the [Adjust Loop] command, however
this tutorial uses the least squares adjustment method.

Using the Least Squares Adjustment Method

Now you will reduce the survey information using a least squares adjustment.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Settings] then [Least Square Settings]

The command displays the Survey Least Squares Settings dialogue box. This dialogue box
determines the settings used in the least squares calculations and how information will be
imported into the drawing. The first section of the dialogue box displays the calculations,
including the maximum numbers of iterations (or attempts) to reach a solution, and the
coordinate convergence in current units that is considered acceptable as a solution. Also
displayed are the scale factor for the error ellipses that are plotted in the drawing, and the
confidence interval to use in the calculations. The remaining sections display which layers are
used for the information, as well as what information is to be brought into the drawing.

38 Softdesk Survey Tutorial

Using the Least Squares Adjustment Method

Select the “2-Dimensional” radio button and set the “Ellipse Scale Factor” to 100. Also, toggle
off the “Distance Lines”, “Angle Lines”, and “Direction Lines” check boxes. The dialogue box
should look like the following illustration.
SVT-30-I.EPS

Least Squares Settings Dialogue Box

Select the “OK” button to save the new settings.

Next, create a network file of all the stations in the drawing.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Networks] then [Create Input File]

The command extracts all the coordinate and observation data and places it in the ASCII file
network.lsi. Select the [Edit Input] command to look at the file created.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Networks] then [Edit Input]

The initial station coordinates and elevations display on lines 7 through 13. The angle and
distance information for each station, as well as the standard deviation errors for angles and
distances display on lines 17 through 31. Use the arrow keys or a mouse to view the file, then
press <Alt F> and type X to exit the text editor and return to the graphics screen.
Use the [Process Inputs] command to adjust the traverse based on the least squares data and
display the output file name which contains both the original observations and the adjusted
coordinates.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Networks] then [Process Input File]

40 Softdesk Survey Tutorial

Using the Least Squares Adjustment Method

The Least Squares Output File dialogue box displays as shown in the following illustration.
SVT-31-I.EPS

Least Squares Output File Dialogue Box

Select the “OK” button to exit the dialogue box.

The next step is to import the adjusted coordinates.
Pull-down» [Traverse] then [Networks] then [Import Adjusted Coordinates]

Select “Network” from the Least Squares Adjusted File Selection dialogue box, and then select
the “OK” button. The following prompts display.
Adjust sideshots (Yes/No)? <Yes>: (press <Enter>)
Adjust figures (Yes/No)? <Yes>:(press <Enter>)
Erase entities from ellipse & observation layers (Yes/No)? <Yes>:(press <Enter>)

This imports the stations in their adjustment locations, as well as updates the sideshots taken
from each station.
The last step is to connect the traverse stations using the [Draw Traverse Topology/Route]
command. This command connects the traverse stations together showing the traverse legs and
puts them on the TRAVERSE LINE layer as defined in the Survey Interactive Graphic Settings
dialogue box. It also connects all the traverse stations to the stations defined in the individual
loops in the drawing.

Additional information can be entered a number of ways using the Survey module. You can enter
information at the command line, edit and add information to the batch.txt file, or use the
Traverse or Sideshot editors.
The Sideshot editor works like a spreadsheet. It allows you to edit existing sideshots or add
additional ones. The editor also allows different data entry per sideshot. For example, you can use
a sideshot that was taped, shot with an EDM, or shot using a bearing and distance. The editor
keeps the information separate and reduces each sideshot accordingly.

Creating Figures

Creating Figures
The Figure commands can be used a number of different ways. Figures consist of AutoCAD
polylines with extended entity information attached to them. The figures represent entities such
as property lines, roads (including both edges of pavement), centerlines, baselines, buildings, and
lots. Each entity is tagged with a name when created and remains resident until it is deleted from
the drawing. Figures can be offset, listed, inversed, or mapchecked. They can be very useful in
the detailing of plans. Now take a look at some examples.
Start the plan detailing by entering road information for the centerline.
Pull-down>> [Figures] then [Begin]

Now you are ready to close the figure. The [Close Building] command closes the last point with
the first or starting point using two 90° angles and calculating the distance to close. There is also
a [Close] command which connects the last point set in the figure with the first point or
beginning point, and a [Close Rectangle] command which from a single line, creates a rectangle
by offsetting the line at a distance specified, and connecting the endpoints. For example,
“CLOSE RECTANGLE 50” offsets the figure line 50 feet and connects the endpoints.
Enter the [Close Building] command at the Survey command line.

Listing State Plane Coordinates

Listing State Plane Coordinates

State regulations may require you to list state plane coordinates as well as the latitude and
longitude of the property corners. Latitudes and Longitudes are measured in angular units and
usually require 6 or 8 decimal places to ensure sufficient accuracy in conversions. Therefore, we
recommend that you set the angular precision for the drawing to be 6 or 8 places when using the
commands in the Geodesy menu. The only exception is the geodesic calculator.
Pull-down» [Geodesy] then [Current Zone]

Northing” value and note the convergence angle and grid coordinates. The dialogue box should
look like the following illustration.
SVT-47-I.EPS

Survey Projection Calculator Dialogue Box

The [Geodetic Calculator] command produces the state plane coordinates for point 1
automatically. Since the astronomic azimuth was determined from the sunshot calculations,
determine the geodetic azimuth using the following calculation.
Az geodetic = Az astronomic + Laplace correction

The above calculation is based on the assumption that the Laplace correction is negligible. In
this example, it is assumed to be zero (0). Laplace corrections may be supplied by the
governing agency in your area. For example, NGS supplies Laplace corrections for all 50 states
in the United States.

To obtain the grid azimuth, use the following calculation.

Az grid = Az geodetic - Θ - u
Where Az grid is the grid azimuth, Az geodetic is the geodetic azimuth, Θ is the convergence
angle, and “u” is negligible except in first order work.
Select the “OK” button to return to the graphics screen.
