REVIEW OF CALIFORNIA CONTENT STANDARDS UNIT 10.9.
Standard 9.1.:
From the Constitution of Japan:
“We, the Japanese people, acting through our duly elected representatives in the N
ational Diet, determined that we shall secure for ourselves and our posterity th
e fruits of peaceful cooperation with all nations and the blessings of liberty t
hroughout this land
The source for these ideas outlined in the Japanese Constitution is the United S
tates Constitution.
The main reason why Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and East Germany b
ecame satellites of the Soviet Union was that the Soviet army (Red Army)
occupied these areas at the end of World War ll.

n was competition for political influence over other countries.
This, of course, presupposes the incompatibility of both political and econonmic
systems and the unwillingness to accept the limitations imposed upon one’s own sy
stem by the mere existence of the other, such as no free access to the east as a
result of political control of the Communist bloc.
One action that was an expression of the growth of nationalism in the Middle Eas
t was the Egyptian seizure of the Suez Canal (Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1956, leadin
g to the Suez Crisis). Another important issue was the loss of control of oil pr
oduction by European companies.

ith the Soviet Union for influence in the Congo during the early 196O’s was that t
