GLOBAL WARMING is the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface

air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. According to the
2007 Fourth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change (IPCC), global surface temperature increased by 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F)
during the 20th century. Most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of
the 20th century has been caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases,
which result from human activities such as the burning of fossil fuel and deforestation.
Global dimming, a reduction of sunlight reaching the surface as a result of increasing
atmospheric concentrations of human-made particulates, has partially countered the
effects of warming induced by greenhouse gases.

Global warming is a matter of serious concern. In the last 50 years due to various
interference and activities by the humans such as burning of fossil fuels and deforestation
have added to an increase in the temperature of the earth (IPCC). Also as per IPCC
natural disaster especially solar variation and volcanic activities have attributed to the
global warming. The concentration of the Greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CO2, CH4,
NO2, CO, SCl6, SO2, and other gases such as perflourocarbon and hydroflorocarbon
(cfc)2have increased tremendously making it a matter of serious global concern.

The scientific consensus is that global warming is occurring and is mostly the result
of human activity. This finding is recognized by the national science academies of all the
major industrialized countries and is not rejected by any scientific body of national or
international standing. According to a recent Gallup poll, people in most countries are
more likely to attribute global warming to human activities than to natural causes. Many
people believe in these statements, but there are many people around the world that
refuse to believe that human contributions are the main cause of global warming, saying
that the increase is part of the natural climatic change of earth. Debatable causes and
solutions of this theory of global warming include the natural climatic change, the
grounds of human causes, and the solutions we can take to halt global warming. As
humans, we all have our own opinions, but the problem of global warming should not be
debated; it should be solved.

Climate model projections summarized in the 2007 IPCC report indicate that the global
surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the 21st
century. Global warming effects all the components of the environment such as the
atmosphere, hydrosphere, ozone layer, lithosphere, glaciers etc.. An increase in global
temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern
of precipitation. Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be
associated with continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely effects
of the warming include more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events
including heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall events, species extinctions due to
shifting temperature regimes, and changes in agricultural yields. Warming and related
changes will vary from region to region around the globe, though the nature of these
regional changes is uncertain.
The rapid increase and decrease in temperature i.e. heat stress (hyperthermia) and
extreme cold (hypothermia) cause various diseases related to the heart and also causes
breathing problems. In the entire world (W.H.O figures), 25crore people are affected by
diseases related to skin, heart, lungs, breathing problems and many more due to global
warming. In India alone, 50 lakh people suffer from chronic diseases of the lungs due to
global warming with 10 lakh being in Delhi alone.

The biggest impact of global warming is that on glaciers. As per the study of glacier
Gangotri-Gomukh by MELAP CHANDRA of JNU he states that the glacier decreased by
19 meters beteen the years 1990-2008 and the area of the glacier has decreased to 22.90
hectare. Also the melting of the glaciers in the north and south are causing a rise in sea
levels at an alarming rate. The countries on the sea coast and below the sea level will get
submerged eventually. Also the repeated flooding due to sea, there would be an increase
in the soil salinity.
The Kyoto Protocol is aimed at stabilizing greenhouse gas concentration to prevent a
"dangerous anthropogenic interference".[11] As of November 2009, 187 states had signed
and ratified the protocol.[12] Proposed responses to global warming include mitigation to
reduce emissions, adaptation to the effects of global warming, and geoengineering to
remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
