Homeschooling Vocabulary

1. Home school- to teach (one's children) at home instead of sending them to school.

2. Socialization- a continuing process whereby an individual acquires a personal

identity and learns the norms, values, behavior, and social skills appropriate to his

or her social position.

3. Home School Laws- laws placed to ensure a child that is homeschooled receives

a decent education by requiring and enforcing certain rules and regulations.

4. Curriculum- the aggregate of courses of study given in a school, college,

university, etc.

5. Schedule- a plan of procedure, usually written, for a proposed objective, esp.

with reference to the sequence of and time allotted for each item or operation

necessary to its completion.

6. Family- a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children,

considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not.

7. NCES- aka, National Center for Education Statistics, this organization

takes statistics for a various number of educational institutes.

8. Public School-a school that is maintained at public expense for the education of

the children of a community or district and that constitutes a part of a system of

free public education commonly including primary and secondary schools.

9. Peers- a person who is equal to another in abilities, qualifications, age,

background, and social status.


10. Education- the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge,

developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing

oneself or others intellectually for mature life.

11. Teacher- a person who teaches or instructs esp. as a profession; instructor.

12. Religion- a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed

upon by a number of persons or sects.

13. Lifestyle- the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc.,

that together constitutes the mode of living of an individual or group.

14. FCE- aka Family Consumer Ed, class that teaches students various jobs and

practical things to know when getting out of high school, or living by yourself.

15. Peer pressure- social pressure by members of one's peer group to take a certain

action, adopt certain values, or otherwise conform in order to be accepted.

16. Housework- the work of cleaning, cooking, etc.

17. Environment- the social and cultural forces that shape the life of a person or a

population.

18. Tedious- marked by tedium; long and tiresome.

19. Violence- rough or injurious physical force, action, or treatment.

20. Beliefs- confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately

susceptible to rigorous proof.
