1; - INTRODUCTION (C.S.R)

In the current globalized business world, there

exist large multinational as well as small local
business organizations. One of such strategies
used is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).
CSR consists of a wide-range activities and
programs that improve the organization's
social, environmental and local economic
impact, their influence on society, social
cohesion and human rights, and fair trade.
Particularly CSR greatly focus on

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL
CSR PROJECT: LOTUS BUSINESS SCHOOL

environmental protection and the well being of

employees, the community and civil society in
general, both now and in the future through
which the organizations assure good will
among their stake holders
The concept of social responsibility among
businessmen, particularly in India, is not new
and can high mosques, large dharmshalas and
great education institution. Indian literature is
full of incidents when businessmen have gone
out of the way to help extract king and
societies out of crises. Many Indian businesses
are known for staying one step ahead of the
Government, as far as the welfare of
employees and societies is concerned.
Till the late twentieth century, the mission of
business environment being characterized by
various developments including the shift of
power from capital to knowledge ,increased
levels of literacy and the shrinking of
geographical boundaries due to faster means
of travel and communication, people are, by
and large, becoming conscious of their
rights ,which has led to a rise in the
expectations of society from business. The of
narrated success stories of middle or lower
income individuals turning into billionaires
have generated a lot of excitement and people
at large expect business organizations to treat

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL

them as partners in wealth creation rather than

as merely recipients of their donation. No
amount of coercion can compel corporate
houses to realize their sense of responsibility,
as it has to come from within the companies
today face increasing demands for corporate
social responsibility (CSR). Whereas firms once
might have been able to prosper by concerning
themselves almost exclusively with financial
results, most now find it at least prudent and
many are finding it directly valuable-to manage
a wider array of the impacts that they generate
(or can influence), from environmental
conditions to employee health and safety to
social conditions like the quality of public
education .How can boards best organize
themselves and act so as to add perspective
and value in these matters? First, they must
develop the capacity to examine and evaluate
individual CSR-oriented actions a process that
requires both an understanding of the
motivation behind them and an assessment of
their impact on society and on the firm.
Second, they need to ensure that the firm’s
CSR activities constitute a coherent and
effective CSR strategy. Third, they have to see
to it that their firm’s CSR strategy and decision-
making are integrated into the company’s
overall strategy.

2;-Corporate social responsibility

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is the

voluntary role and contribution of the business
community towards a better social and
environmental development, apart from their
investment to organizational development. CSR
is generally seen as the business contribution
to sustainable development which has been
defined as "development that meets the needs
of the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs",
and is generally understood as focusing on how
to achieve the integration of economic,
environmental, and social imperatives.
Ideally, CSR policy would function as a built-in,
self-regulating mechanism whereby business
would monitor and ensure their adherence to
law, ethical,

Standards, and international norms. Business

would embrace responsibility for the impact of
their activities on the environment, consumers,
employees, communities, stakeholders and all
other members of the public sphere.

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL
CSR PROJECT: LOTUS BUSINESS SCHOOL

Furthermore, business would proactively

promote the public interest by encouraging
community growth and development, and
voluntarily eliminating practices that harm the
public sphere, regardless of legality.
Essentially, CSR is the deliberate inclusion of
public interest into corporate decision-making,
and the honoring of a triple bottom line:
People, Planet, Profit.

3;- DEFINITION OF CORPORATE SOCIAL

RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate social responsibility is a form of

corporate self-regulation integrated into a
business model. CSR policy functions as a built-
in, self-regulating mechanism whereby
business monitors and ensures its active
compliance with the spirit of the law, ethical
standards, and international norms. The goal of
CSR is to embrace responsibility for the
company's actions and encourage a positive
impact through its activities on the
environment, consumers, employees,
communities, stakeholders and all other
members of the public sphere. Furthermore,
CSR-focused businesses would proactively
promote the public interest by encouraging
community growth and development, and
voluntarily eliminating practices that harm the
public sphere, regardless of legality. CSR is the
deliberate inclusion of public interest into
corporate decision-making, and the honoring of
a triple bottom line: people, planet, profit.
The "corporate social responsibility" came in to
common use in the early 1970s, after many
multinational corporations formed. The term
stakeholder, meaning those on whom an

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL
CSR PROJECT: LOTUS BUSINESS SCHOOL

organization's activities have an impact, was

used to describe corporate owners beyond
shareholders as a result of an influential book
by R. Edward Freeman, Strategic management
a stakeholder approach in 1984. Proponents
argue that corporations make more long term
profits by operating with a perspective, while
critics argue that CSR distracts from the
economic role of businesses. Others argue CSR
is merely window-dressing, or an attempt to
pre-empt the role of governments as a
watchdog over powerful multinational
corporations.

Thus CSR needs to be looked at in terms

responsibility to individuals and groups to their
respectively assigned roles within institutions
at the micro level; the responsibility of the
institutions as a whole to its stakeholders
-staff, customers, shareholders, community,
country of operation etc.

4;- WHAT IS CSR?

"CSR is a set of management practices that

ensure the company minimizes the negative
impacts of its operations on the society while
maximizing its positive impacts."

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL
CSR PROJECT: LOTUS BUSINESS SCHOOL

Corporate sector has a major role to play in a

developing country like ours. However majority
of the companies have a limited or myopic
approach to corporate social responsibility.
CSR is about improving the general living
standards of the community, raising
educational standards and creating a positive
impact on society. Usually CSR concentrates on
the activities that typically address the aspects
of a firm's behavior with respect to such key
elements as; health and safety, environmental
protection, human rights, human resource
management practices, corporate governance,
community development, consumer protection,
labor protection, supplier relations, business
ethics, and stakeholder rights.

Many European companies, on the other hand,

see philanthropy and CSR as one in the same.
What the companies do with their money is as
important as how they make it. We added one
para to the intro about CSR, but really feel that
the first para should come out -- CSR goes far
beyond simple stakeholder dialogue and this
needs to be reflected more forcefully.
The "Attention Diversion" paragraph is one-
sided commentary masquerading as objective
description - it makes assumptions about why

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL
CSR PROJECT: LOTUS BUSINESS SCHOOL

companies do certain things that they would

certainly dispute.

5;- SOCIAL AWARENESS AND EDUCATION

The role among corporate stakeholders to work

collectively to pressure corporations is
changing. Shareholders and investors
themselves, through socially responsible
investing are exerting pressure on corporations
to behave responsibly. Non-governmental
organizations are also taking an increasing
role, leveraging the power of the media and
the Internet to increase their scrutiny and
collective activism around corporate behavior.
Through education and dialogue, the
development of community in holding

CSR PROJECT: LOTUS

BUSINESS SCHOOL

businesses responsible for their actions is

growing CSR.

2.5 Limitation of the study

2.1 Importance of study

CSR is the most important part of the

company. Abstract Companies are, in a broad
sense, a group of different agents that have a
relationship with shareholders, citizens,
providers, and customers. In other words, they
are known as stakeholders. Corporate social
responsibility may help to establish clear
boundaries among the different interests of the

BUSINESS SCHOOL

groups described above. In this paper, the

authors will describe, analyze, and formalize
the critical responsibility parameters, as well as
the variables that shape them. Corporate social
responsibility is proposed as a new
management tool and not as a fashionable
concept. Furthermore, the advantages and
limitations of corporate social responsibility will
be analyzed in order to define a management
model for achieving responsibility among
organizations. Finally, the model limitations are
presented, both in the verbal and the
mathematical formalizations.
The NGOs in Seva Sahyog network are those,
who have demonstrated a sound and robust
record in grassroots work, but lack of resources
such as technology, finance and human
resources to take their work to the next level.
SS network aim at effectively channelising
these resources to the NGOs. The one of the
key trust area of Seva Sahyog is CSR and to
developed a system for reducing the gaps
between corporate and Voluntary Organization.
