Is this the end of marriage as we know it?

Divorce rates are skyrocketing, and civil partnerships are increasingly in demand. Government has announced a raft of proposed marriage reforms, including a review of civil partnerships, pre-nuptial agreements and marital tax breaks. Is this reform welcome progress, or is the bell tolling for the institution of marriage? Our panel of family law experts will discuss the changing face of marriage and the legal framework that surrounds it.

The Panel
Anastasia de Waal is the Director of Family and Education at Civitas, Chair of Parentline Plus, Womens Parliamentary Radio board member and an Observer panellist Dr Samantha Callan is a research and policy expert on family relationships, and chaired the Family Law Review and Early Years Commission for the Centre for Social Justice. Ayesha Vardag, recently named Britains Top Divorce Lawyer, represented Granatino in the Radmacher v Granatino case. Andrew Meehan is a specialist divorce lawyer and regular media commentator on pre-nuptial agreements.

Law Society Public Debate Series

The end of marriage as we know it? is the first in a series of public lectures and panel debates on cutting edge issues across the spectrum of law reform.

Coming soon:
To Superinjunct or not to Superinjunct - 20 September 2011 This debate will tease apart the issues raised by so-called super injunctions, anonymity orders and tweeting. How should Parliament and the courts tread the line between privacy and the public interest in the age of viral social media? Social Care: Law and Regulation in Crisis? A rapidly aging population and increased pressure on public finances has arguably pushed an already overburdened social care system to breaking point. If the measure of a civilised society is the standard of care we afford the most vulnerable, are we falling short? With recent media revelations of an abuse culture within the care system - and serious issues with the private sector provision of care - we discuss the challenges the system is currently facing and plans for reform of both law and regulation.
