Oxidative Induction Test

PerkinElmer Thermal Analyzers

What is O.I.T. ?
Oxidative Induction Time

This time can be used as criteria of the thermal stability of polyolefines in an oxidative atmosphere It is an accelereated test used as a qualitative evaluation of the oxidative stability of a material. It can be used as an index when developing formulation with better oxidative stability Under OIT, the test speciment will be heated to a specific temperature in open pan then held isothermal for a short period of time before switching from N2 purge to O2 purge. The time taken after O2 gas switching to the onset of oxidation reaction is defined as OIT

Page 1

What happens without antioxidants?

Without antioxidants, polyolefins may undergo slow oxidative reaction and progressive breakdown of the polymer backbone. The breakdown will lead to degradation of the material properties like toughness and rigidity This reaction can be accelerated with the increase in temperature

Page 2

How to prevent this degradation?

The use of antioxidants in the formulations can reduce this process and increase the lifetime Similarly in engine lubrication oil, antioxidant is added to increase the lifespan of lubricating function Antioxidant is present in facial creams, engine lubrication oil, polyolefin, cable or wire insulation material, vapor-barrier -films, tubes or pipelines

Page 3

How to determine the influence of such additives?

OIT can be used as an index to measure the effect of antioxidants DSC can be used to conduct standard OIT test ASTM D 3895 (Polyolefines) DIN EN 728 (Polyolefines) For lubrication oil, high pressure OIT test is recommended.

Which instrumentation can Perkin Elmer offer to run this test?

for O.I.T. on lubricants: High Pressure DSC Cell (Up to 600psi)

for O.I.T. on Polyolefines: Pyris Diamond DSC, Sapphire DSC or Jade DSC

Page 5

Who needs to perform O.I.T. ?

Companies who produce or utilize Polyolefines which are in thermal use under an oxygen atmosphere

* cable- or wire isolations * geomembranes * vapor-barrier-films * tubes or piplines

Influence of Temperature

Page 9

Influence of Sample Preparation

Sample geometry affects the oxidation initiation and rate. It is one of the sources of variation in OIT test. For high reprocibility of OIT test, sample weight and geometry must be kept constant
Page 10

Influence of Purge Gas / Rate

Purge gas type and rate can affect the oxidation initiation and rate. It is another source of variation in OIT test. For high reprocibility of OIT test, purge gas purity and rate must be kept constant
Page 11

Influence of Pan Material

Sample pan can also affect the oxidation initiation and rate. Copper can accelerate the oxidation reaction

Page 12

How to ensure OIT reproducibility?

Good instrument calibration Constant isothermal temperature through good furnace calibration Constant sample morphology, geometry and weight Reliable and consistent purge gas flow rate Use same pan material
