April 2011 Dear Parents and Carers, We are now into the summer term and we are all

looking forward to an exciting time over the next few months. Year 3 will be going on a trip later in the term. Letters confirming details of the trip will be sent to you nearer to the time of the trip and parent volunteers will be greatly appreciated.

Literacy This term we will be using a range of texts including information, plays and persuasive writing. We will develop speaking and listening skills and use drama to understand texts effectively. We will analyse and answer questions about what we have read, and will use what we have learned to write in each genre. Of course we will continue to work on spellings, handwriting and presentation too.

Numeracy In Numeracy, the children will continue to develop their understanding of place value, ordering and rounding numbers. They will think about fractions and decimals and continue to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations. Please could you ensure that your child continues to learn their times tables.

Science In Science, we will be investigating plant life and what is required for successful plant growth. The children will also be growing a plant and monitoring its progress. In magnetism, the children will investigate the properties of magnets and how magnets are used in todays world.

ICT In ICT, the children will be learning about sound manipulation. They will use a range of progressive technology used for sound capturing. They will also use the computer to make music compositions.

History In History we will be learning about the Tudors. The children will learn about how Henry VIII became king, about his six wives and how his children became Kings and Queens and fought against one another.

R.E. In R.E. the children will be addressing relationships and role models. They will discuss feelings, thoughts and personalities as well as who/what influences their lives. The children will also discuss relationships with the natural world and the responsibilities in taking care of it.

Art In art the children will be studying portraits. They will compare and comment on different ideas, methods and approaches to portrait work and understand why portraits are made and what they show about the people in them.

Music In music the children will be exploring arrangements. They will create, combine and perform rhythmic and melodic material as part of a class performance of a song. This will include how instruments can be used to accompany songs by selecting appropriate patterns and rehearsing this to perfection. Gymnastics, Dance and Games In Gymnastics the children will learn to improve their ability to select appropriate actions and use simple compositional ideas in order to achieve height. In Dance the children will learn the sophistication and elegance of a Tudor dance. In Games we will be playing tennis and taking part in athletic events. As it gets warm again, children only need a plain white t-shirt, plain navy shorts and trainers or plimsolls for PE. However, it is very important that they do have their own PE kit to change into. Please ensure that all kit is labelled with your childs name & class. All jewellery including religious must be removed and long hair tied back. Homework Please support your child at home by listening to them read; helping them to practise their spellings and times tables (including testing them when they have learned them); and by discussing their maths homework. Maths Homework will be set every Friday and handed into the class teacher the following Monday. If you have any concerns please come & speak to us briefly while the children line up in the mornings or arrange an appointment for after school. Please continue to look at the Home Communication book for letters. The H.C. book should come home every evening and be brought back into school by your child the following morning. Thank you for your ongoing support and co-operation. Year 3 Teachers Class 1 Mrs P. Kaur / Miss T. Perreira Class 3 Mrs K. Sheptuha (Year Group Leader)
