Whimsy

Calgary, Alberta January 14,

As hinted at in the last issue, I have managed to nish two larger paintings. I started them in November and had been picking away at them ever since. Really, I should have nished them almost right away and yet I didnt. A lady I traded postcards with many moons ago and have kept in touch with recently said something to me that coincided with a conclusion I had just come to. My comment to her follows: Hi Jean, Thank you for your thoughts. Another friend says she started getting cards in 2002 and I just received a note from yet another friend who is sure I was sending out stuff in the late 90s. I probably was but I dont think those had evolved into the concept of Seasonal Greetings. Its interesting that you should comment on liking my earlier works better. Id have to agree with you! :) I came to that conclusion myself just recently in going through my digital archives. My memory being so aky, the archives are for the purpose of reminding myself what I had done. What I have been doing lately has been more drawing and colouring exercise than my innate expression and looking at the archives claried that feeling for me. I have two larger pieces that I have been picking at for some time now and I am thinking that I have been picking precisely because (while I nd them interesting) they just dont quite make it. Now I have to decide whether to nish them off or put them aside. I think I will put them aside but we shall see. So I didnt put them aside and nished them instead. I like them but something is missing for me. I did a number of ATCs to work out what was missing for me - the whimsy. I think my next larger pieces are going to play with these concepts. I have a number of owl drawings that I just drew and while they will be more colouring exercises these owls, for me, have an inherent whimsy so I dont expect to pick at them. :)
