es, there is LIFE after a

diagnosis. Yes, you can
fight for life, your LIFE.
Every day in the United States
more than 4,100 people are
newly diagnosed with some
form cancer, and when you add
in the other major diseases, the
number escalates past 12,000 a
day. And these numbers dont
include the number of family
and friends impacted.
So when people hear a
doctor say those infamous
words, Im so sorry, followed
by whatever, seeds of hope-
lessness, anxiety, fear, loss, pain,
and even despair begin to take
root. There may be some truth
to the statement that life will
never be the same again, but
that doesnt always mean its
going to be worse. Many times
we have all heard people say I
thank God for what has hap-
pened. My eyes have been
opened to the things that are
really important.
One person who has seen
the hidden potential for LIFE
in these kinds of situations is
Rev. Dr. Jim Henry, the
Founder & President of The
Life Givers Network. Life
Givers is an organization that is
dedicated to early, intentional,
people focused, life oriented in-
tervention for patients and
those who care for them no
matter how bad situations
may appear.
This is why the Life
Givers group at Jacksonville
Chapel is hosting the one day
workshop, 7 Steps to Vi-
brant Living on June 25th.
During this workshop, Jim
will share insights that will
inspire you, give new hope
and vision for what is possi-
ble, and teach practical steps
that will begin moving you
toward a vibrant, extraordinary
life, no matter how bad things
may be.
Based on more than thirty
five years of clinical, pastoral,
and personal life experiences,
Jim will share practical ideas
that can lead you to a whole
new level of living. Through
dedication, discipline, hard
work, and faith principles, you
can learn as others have that
your life can be better than you
ever imagined possible in spite
of an illness or crisis.
The workshop will be
held from 9am to 4pm in the
Ministry Center South at
Jacksonville Chapel on June
25th. You can register for the
event by going on line to
www.afterdiagnosislife.com and
clicking on the events tab. At
the bottom of that page is a
link to a secure registration
page. Questions about the day
can be addressed to info@after-

rom the Associated Press:
Jack Kevorkian, the au-
dacious, fearless doctor
who spurred on the national
right-to-die debate with a
homemade suicide machine
that helped end the lives of
dozens of ailing people, died
Friday, June 3rdat a Detroit-
area hospital after a brief illness.
He was 83.
The retired pathologist,
who said he injected lethal
drugs that helped some 130
people die during the 1990s,
likened himself to Martin
Luther King and Gandhi and
called prosecutors Nazis and
his critics religious fanatics.
He burned state orders against
him, showed up at court in
costume, called doctors who
didnt support him Hypocritic
oafs and challenged authori-
ties to stop him or make his ac-
tions legal.
The issues got to be
raised to the level where it is fi-
nally decided, Kevorkian said
during a broadcast of CBS 60
Minutes that aired a Lou
Gehrigs disease patients
videotaped 1998 death as
Kevorkian challenged prosecu-
tors to charge him in the case
that eventually sent him to
prison.
Experts credit Kevorkian,
who insisted that people had
the right to have a medical
professional help them die,
with publicizing physician-as-
sisted suicide. Even so, few
states made it legal. Laws went
into effect in Oregon in 1997
and Washington State in
2009, and a 2009 Montana
Supreme Court ruling effec-
tively legalized the practice in
that state.Somebody has to do
something for suffering hu-
manity, Kevorkian once said.
I put myself in my patients
place. This is something I
would want.In the end, how-
ever, he was too weak to take
advantage of the option he of-
fered others, said Geoffrey
Fieger, Kevorkians former at-
torney.If he had enough
strength to do something
about it, he would have,
Fieger said at a news confer-
ence in Southfield. Had he
been able to go home Jack
Kevorkian probably would not
have allowed himself to go
back to the hospital.
People who died with his
help suffered from cancer, Lou
Gehrigs disease, multiple scle-
rosis, paralysis. They died in
their homes, an office, a De-
troit island park, a remote
cabin and the back of
Kevorkians van.

Nicknamed Dr. Death,
Kevorkian catapulted into
public consciousness in 1990
when he used his homemade
suicide machine in his rusted
Volkswagen van to inject
lethal drugs into an
Alzheimers patient who
sought his help in dying.
For nearly a decade, he
escaped authorities efforts to
stop him. His first four trials,
all on assisted suicide charges,
resulted in three acquittals and
one mistrial.Murder charges in
earlier cases were thrown out
because Michigan at the time
had no law against assisted sui-
cide. The Legislature wrote
one in response to Kevorkian.
He was also stripped of his
medical license.
Fieger said Friday that
Kevorkian didnt accept
money and never gained any
wealth for assisting in sui-
cides.
Kevorkians ultimate goal
was to establish obitoriums
where people would go to die.
Doctors there could harvest or-
gans and perform medical ex-
periments during the suicide
process. Such experiments
would be entirely ethical
spinoffs of suicide, he wrote in
his 1991 book Prescription:
Medicide - The Goodness of
Planned Death.
His road to prison began
in September 1998, when he
videotaped himself injecting
Thomas Youk, a 52-year-old
Lou Gehrigs disease patient,
with lethal drugs. He gave the
tape to 60 Minutes.
Two months later, a na-
tional television audience
watched Youk die and heard
Kevorkian say of authorities:
Ive got to force them to act.
Prosecutors quickly responded
with a first-degree murder
charge.Kevorkian acted as his
own attorney for most of the
trial. He told the court his ac-
tions were a medical service
for an agonized human
being.In his closing argument,
Kevorkian told jurors that

some acts by sheer common
sense are not crimes.
Just look at me, he said.
Honestly now, do you see a
criminal? Do you see a mur-
derer?The U.S. Supreme
Court twice turned back ap-
peals from Kevorkian, in 2002,
when he argued that his prose-
cution was unconstitutional,
and in 2004, when he claimed
he had ineffective representa-
tion.
Kevorkian was freed in
June 2007 after serving eight
years of a 10- to 25-year sen-
tence. His lawyers had said he
suffered from hepatitis C, dia-
betes and other problems, and
he had promised in affidavits
that he would not assist in a
suicide if he was released.
After building a suicide
device in 1989 from parts he
found in flea markets, he
sought his first assisted-suicide
candidate by placing advertise-
ments in local newspapers.
Newspaper and TV interviews
brought more attention.On
June 4, 1990, he drove his van
to a secluded park north of De-
troit. After Janet Adkins, 54,
of Portland, Ore., met him
there, he inserted a needle into
her arm and, when she was
ready, she flipped the switch
that released a lethal flow of
drugs.He later switched from
his device to canisters of car-
bon monoxide, again insisting
patients took the final step by
removing a clamp that re-
leased the flow of deadly gas to
the face mask.
Kevorkians life story be-
came the subject of the 2010
HBO movie, You Dont Know
Jack, which earned actor Al
Pacino Emmy and Golden
Globe Awards for his portrayal
of Kevorkian. Pacino paid trib-
ute to Kevorkian during his
Emmy acceptance speech and
recognized the world-famous
former doctor, who sat smiling
in the audience.
Pacino said during the
speech that it was a pleasure to
try to portray someone as bril-
liant and interesting and
unique as Kevorkian and a
pleasure to know him. Jack
stated that Pacino portrayed
him better than he did.
Kevorkian himself said he
liked the movie and enjoyed
the attention it generated, but
told The Associated Press that
he doubted it would inspire
much action by a new genera-
tion of assisted-suicide advo-
cates.Theres nothing new to
say about it. Its a legitimate
ethical medical practice as it
was in ancient Rome and
Greece.
Readers: Whichever side
of the Kevorkian fence you
stood behind, I believe that
Jack Kevorkians belief, deter-
mination, persistence, ideal-
ism, conviction, commitment
and self-sacrificeought to be
applauded and admired. He
stayed true to form until his
death; that medically assisted
suicide is not only a patients
right, but, a physicians obliga-
tion.
For many reasons, some
people would like the choice
of not having to live with their
specific affliction. For others,
contemplating the present day
financial costs of end of life
care or long-term care,
whether at home or in a home,
people of sound mind should
be able to decide if they want
to use their life time accumu-
lation of funds to pay for these
services or be able to end their
lives by choice, instead, leav-
ing their family fortune to
their families. In time, I be-
lieve Jack Kevorkians dream
of obitoriums will be a real-
ity, but, until that time, re-
member the 7 Ps: Proper

ads do a lot throughout
the year, and Fathers
Day is when they get
their recognition for all the
helping hands theyve offered in
the last year. While it was once
commonplace to give Dad a
necktie or another minor acces-
sory for Fathers Day, many
wives and children have begun
to ensure Dads gift is a little
more meaningful come his spe-
cial day each June.
For those who want to
think outside the box, how
about you think outside the
house as well? A day trip with
Dad to a local attraction of note
could be just what the doctor
ordered to put a smile on Dads
face this Fathers Day. The fol-
lowing ideas are just a few of the
many day trips that Dad is sure
to love this Fathers Day.
Take Dad out to the ball
game. If Dad is a fan of Amer-
icas pastime, take him out to
the ball game for a day of fun in
the sun watching his favorite
team. If there isnt a local Major
League team in the area, look
for a minor league game instead.
Minor league games are more
intimate affairs, and Dad is sure
to appreciate and cherish a day
at the ballpark. Just dont let
Dad spend a dime all day!
Hit the links. For the father
whos an avid golfer, nothing
could be finer than a round of
golf at his favorite course.
Spend the afternoon hitting the
links with Dad and then buy
him a meal at the 19th hole.
Catch some fish. For the fa-
ther who loves to fish, a day at
his favorite fishing hole could
be a day of relaxation hes sure
to covet. Be sure to spend the
day with Dad chatting about
whats been going on in his life
and hopefully catch some fish
along the way. And because
there are no tickets to buy or
greens fees to pay, give Dad that
new fishing pole he wants.
Go on tour. For
the Dad who loves
his wine, perhaps a
wine tour could
make for a great
weekend getaway.
Book some rooms at
a nearby hotel and
tour a few local
vineyards, ending
the night with a de-
licious dinner and,
of course, a bottle of
wine.
Rock out! For the
father who still
loves to crank up
his stereo, consider some con-
cert tickets to see one of his fa-
vorite bands. Because Fathers
Day falls during the warm
weather season, consider an
outdoor concert venue where
everyone can sit under the stars
and toast Dad as the music
plays.
Run for the hills. If Dad is an
avid outdoorsman, a camping
trip or a hike through a nearby
park is an ideal way to spend
some quality time together away
from the pressures of everyday
life. Dad may appreciate getting
away from it all, and the fresh
mountain air cant be matched
when it comes to some R&R.

N
eck pain is a common
reason people seek
chiropractic care.
Whether it is a stiffness, ache or
sharp, debilitating pain, prob-
lems associated with the neck -
which can include headache,
arm/hand/shoulder symptoms
and upper back disorders - pres-
ent a significant burden to our
health care system, to our pro-
ductivity and to our lives.
The causes of neck pain
are numerous. Two factors,
however, are by far the most
prevalent: posture and spinal
alignment. Fortunately, both of
these factors can be improved
with knowledge, commitment
and chiropractic treatment.
The following points may be
useful in ensuring your neck
remains pain-free:
POSTURE: Optimum posture
is where, when viewed from the
side, the centre of the ear lies di-
rectly over the midpoint of the
shoulder. Viewed from the
front, the head should not be
tilted, shifted or rotated in rela-
tion to the rib cage. Optimum
posture also involves having
normal cervical, thoracic and
lumbar curves. Your chiroprac-
tor can help to accurately assess
your posture, and can give you
specific exercises and sugges-
tions to improve postural faults.
ERGONOMICS: Ergonomics
involves such things as how one
sits or stands at work, at a desk,
computer or while watching TV
or reading. It can also include
driving or sleeping positions. To
minimize neck, shoulder and
upper back fatigue, avoid pro-
longed positions where the head
is tilted or pushed forward.
Change positions and tasks reg-
ularly and often, choosing a new
task or position that works the
body the opposite way. Strive
for correct, balanced posture
while working, traveling, play-

Tips for a pain free neck By Dr. Glenn Foss

I
s my childs development
normal? This is the most
common question from par-
ents with concerns about their
childs motor development.
Normal development encom-
passes a very broad range and
each infant or child has their
own individual rate at which
their motor skills progress. Here
are some typical signs that may
indicate a possible developmen-
tal disturbance with your child
and would warrant a physical
therapy evaluation.
My infant always cries
when I place him on his
tummy.
The infant may have diffi-
culty lifting his head against
gravity and clearing the airway
to breathe due to weak neck
muscles. This can be a frighten-
ing experience for the infant
and could cause an aversion to
being placed on his or her
tummy.
My infant appears to be very
content to stay on her back in
the same position all the time.
The infant may appear to
have a lack of interest in her
surrounding environment, but
in reality, the infant may be un-
able to perform functional
movement patterns like rolling,
pivoting, and sitting up. It is im-
portant to remember that an in-
fant is capable of performing
goal directed activities, how-
ever, if these goals can not be
accomplished, it is probable
that child is unable to do so.
My infant does not cling to
me when I carry him, but feels
very floppy and more like dead
weight.
The infant may feel this
way because of weakness in the
arms and trunk contributing to
a diminished ability to hold on
to the parent while being car-
ried. The infant may also have
low muscle tone (hypotonia)
possibly causing a decreased
ability to activate the appropri-
ate muscle groups needed to
hold on.
My school age child is hav-
ing a hard time keeping up
with his peers in gym class and
on his soccer team. He is not
able to run as fast or kick as far
as he used to.
The child may have sud-
denly gone through a growth
spurt. Sometimes when chil-
dren grow at rapid rates, muscle
growth does not keep up with
bone growth, thus causing tight
and weak muscles in the ham-
strings and calves. This can re-
sult in slower running,
uncoordinated movements and
a decreased awareness of where
the body is in space.
My preschooler is having dif-
ficulty getting on and off play-
ground equipment. She cannot
jump and is very hesitant and
awkward when going up and
down the stairs.
The child may have weak
or tight muscles, which restrict
movement in certain activities.

She also may be unsure how to
execute a motor plan in the per-
formance of specific actions.
Each of these symptoms
can effectively be addressed
with a skilled pediatric physical
therapist. However, these con-
ditions will need to be addressed
in a timely manner or the fol-
lowing may result
Faulty movement patterns
that can predispose the infant to
muscle imbalances and tight-
ness.
Late achievement of motor
milestones; late crawling, walk-
ing, biking etc.
Omitting a necessary stage of
development.
i.e.: Crawling allows the infant
to build necessary stability
through the joints and improves
trunk strength. If an infant does
not experience crawling and im-
mediately begins to walk, the
infant may be at greater risk for
dislocation or subluxation of the
shoulder and hip joints through-
out its adolescent and adult life.
In addition, poor trunk or core
strength can lead to an uncoor-
dinated or clumsy gait. (walking
pattern)
In summation, it is impor-
tant to have your infant or child
evaluated by a specialist if you
or your pediatrician is having
concerns about motor develop-
ment, a treatment protocol
geared specifically for your child
can assist in the achievement of
motor milestones and improve
your childs overall quality of
movement.

studying diligently for his certification in Orthopedic Manual
Therapy. This training exposed him to the concept of
Maitland Australian therapy, the Maitland Concept is referred
to as a concept and not as a technique. Emphasis is placed
not on the technique of treatment but on a basic philosophy-
a thought and decision making process, involving analytical
examination and assessment on which treatment decisions are
based.
Matthew has also had the thrill of studying with world-
renowned therapists Brian Mulligan and David Butler, further
expanding his clinical skills into more diverse orthopedic and

W
hat is leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is a
bacterial disease.
You may remember your vet-
erinarian offering an optional
vaccine for it during your pets
annual visit. Leptospirosis oc-
curs in many areas, including
New Jersey/New York, and can
affect dogs as well as humans.
In people, the symptoms are
often like the flu and in dogs
they may just not feel well, but
sometimes leptospirosis can
become a more severe, life-
threatening illness affecting
the kidney, liver, brain, lung,
and heart. While cats can be
infected, they rarely show signs
of disease.
The Leptospirosis bacte-
ria is spread through the urine
of infected animals, like squir-
rels skunks, etc. Humans and
animals can become infected
through contact with this con-
taminated urine which can get
into water or soil and can sur-
vive there for weeks to
months. The bacteria can
enter the body through skin or
mucous membranes (eyes,
nose, or mouth), especially if
the skin is broken like from a
cut. Drinking, swimming, or
walking through contaminated
water can also cause infection.
Therefore environments with
ponds, lakes etc are high risk
areas.
The clinical signs of lep-
tospirosis in pets vary and can
be nonspecific. Common clin-
ical signs include fever, vomit-
ing, abdominal pain, diarrhea,
not eating, weakness, lethargy,
stiffness or muscle pain. Infec-
tions usually start with a fever
of 103-104, shivering, and
muscle tenderness. This can
progress to vomiting and dehy-
dration. Severely infected dogs
may develop kidney or liver
failure. They may be reluctant
to move due to muscle or kid-
ney pain. Animals with liver
involvement may develop
jaundice (yellowish pigmenta-
tion of the skin). These severe
infections can be fatal, but
many leptospiral infections in
dogs can also be chronic/sub-
clinical. Dogs that are chroni-
cally infected may show no
outward signs, but may still
shed the bacteria intermit-
tently in the urine for months
or years.
If you think your dog has
leptospirosis contact your vet-
erinarian immediately and
wear gloves if you need to
clean up any urine. Leptospiro-
sis, kidney and liver failure can
be diagnosed through blood
tests. A blood sample can test
for individual serovars (strains)
and the level of antibody
(titer) against these strains.
Depending on the level of the
titer, a positive diagnosis to the
specific strain can be made.
Though, titers could be nega-
tive in the first 10 days after an
initial infection, so many times
additional samples must be
drawn and tested to get a posi-
tive diagnosis.
Luckily leptospirosis is
treatable with antibiotics but
an animal must be
treated early for the
best chance of recov-
ery and the least
amount of potential
organ damage. Com-
monly dogs also need
fluid replacement, and
controlling the vomit-
ing and the problems
associated with the correspon-
ding kidney or liver infections.
Penicillin, typically amoxi-
cillin, is the antibiotic of
choice for treating the initial
infection. After the initial in-
fection is controlled, doxycy-
cline is often used to cure and
prevent a potential long-term
carrier state
The other good news is
that many strains of leptospiro-
sis are preventable in our pets
by getting them vaccinated
against leptospirosis. Though
the vaccine does not provide
total protection. This is be-
cause there are many strains
(types) of leptospires, and the
vaccine does not provide im-
munity against all strains. It is
important to get your pet vac-
cinated to prevent serious dis-
ease and prevent transmission
to humans.
As with any vaccine,
consult your veterinarian if
this vaccine is right for your
pet, based on their lifestyle and
places they live and visit.

n its infancy, the internet
was exclusively a place for
computer specialists and
the government; it was rarely
used for anything other than
informational or business pur-
poses. As it became more pop-
ular, though, the internet
started to gain traction in pop-
culture, and soon enough, it
was used by nearly every com-
puter user on the planet.
Now in 2011, the inter-
net is no longer an infant. Its
a full-grown monolith that is
the cornerstone of enterprise
and communication in the
modern world. In an age
where the internet has such
vast and widespread popularity
with the masses, the most pop-
ular services have been the
ones which are social. Social
networking sites like Twitter,
Facebook, and Foursquare
have grown to be so outra-
geously popular because
theyre not focused on a prod-
uct or theme, but on the indi-
vidual. Naturally, users want
to define themselves as indi-
viduals on these sites by post-
ing pictures, thoughts, plans,
and even their exact where-
abouts. If someone were to
view that information without
permission ten years ago, it
would be considered a com-
plete invasion of privacy. Now,
though, social network users
are more than willing to share
personal data with not only
their friends, but acquain-
tances and oftentimes even
strangers.
People have really got-
ten comfortable not only shar-
ing more information and
different kinds, but more
openly and with more people.
That social norm is just some-
thing that has evolved over
time, Mark Zuckerberg,
founder and CEO of Face-
book, asserted when ques-
tioned about his stance on
internet privacy. Whether the
internet cultures openness is a
good or bad thing, its cer-
tainly undeniable. The Onion,
a satirical online news outlet,
jokes that the CIA is behind
Facebook, and that the
amount of information users
share on the social network is
truly a dream come true for the
CIA. While The Onions
comical depiction of the pro-
lific amount of information
openly shared on the internet
may be hilarious, its shock-
ingly true. Personal informa-
tion was something that was
once almost completely pri-
vate, but is now shared will-
ingly by millions of social
network users.
So is now the end of the
road for privacy? Should we
just forget every notion of it,
and settle for complete trans-
parency? Thankfully, the an-
swer is no. Nobody is being
forced to share information
with anybody. The key thing
to remember when using a so-
cial network is to be selective
when sharing.
On almost every social
networking site existing, pri-
vacy settings can be tweaked
to fit a users needs. On Twit-
ter, its a private-or-public sys-
tem in which tweets are either
shared with everyone or only
friends. More complex net-
works like Facebook allow
users to be truly discerning
when picking who they share
with. You can select what you
want to share with who you
want to share it with. If you
post a pictures, they can be se-
lectively available to only
those you choose, and so on.
One core component of pri-
vacy is making sure your set-
tings are fine-tuned to your
liking.
But even privacy settings
can only go so far. When
youre posting something to a
site, youre still liable for that
Internet privacy: where is it going,
and what can you do to
preserve it? By Paul Gustavsen

get youve given a coworker, or

all of your photos, statuses,

you might not want them to

ber that your privacy settings
probably dont have you cov-

much about being conserva-

is about tweaking privacy set-

put up personal information
without being perfectly certain
that nobody who you wouldnt
want to see it can see it.
Yes, this technologically
advanced age is centered
around sharing information

The most crucial component
of that sharing is discerning
what and what not to share.

f you have lower back
pain, you are not alone.
Spine pain is the sec-
ond most frequent pain com-
plaint. It occurs in 65 to 80
percent of the population at
one time or another, and can
be disabling and frightening.
Its costs to society are great.
Its the most common cause of
job-related disability and a
leading contributor to missed
work. In fact, Americans
spend at least $50 billion
each year to treat low back
pain. A majorcause of back
pain is facet joint arthropa-
thy.
Now, a radiofrequency
procedure using heat is burn-
ing the pain away. Radiofre-
quency ablation is an
outpatient procedure that
takes about 30 minutes to
perform and the recovery pe-
riod is around 20 minutes.
This procedure is a safe, non-
surgical treatment, and the
risks for complications are
low.
Prior to performing a ra-
diofrequency procedure, facet
joint pain as the cause of back
pain can be determined by a
facet joint injection. This is
called a diagnostic injection,
meaning the doctor uses it to
help make a diagnosis. The
physician using x-ray guid-
ance will inject the facet
joint(s) in question with a
small amount of a combina-
tion of local anesthetic and
cortisone. Relief of the acute
or chronic problem while the
joint is numb indicates that
you will likely have a good re-
sponse to radiofrequency ab-
lation.
Radiofrequency ablation
uses radio waves to produce
heat to destroy the nerve(s)
carrying the pain signals from
the facet joint. Once the
nerves carrying pain sensa-
tion from the joints are de-
stroyed, your pain should be
reduced. This should allow
you to do more activity, and
decrease your pain medica-
tions.
Both facet injections
and radiofrequecny ablation
procedures are covered under
commercial plans, workers
compensation and no fault
(PIP). New Jersey Pain Care
Center accepts most major
insurance plans, including
workers compensation and no
fault (PIP).
Specialty trained physi-
cian, Dr. Amr Hosny, per-
forms diagnostic facet
injections and radiofrequency
ablation on a regular basis.
Dr. Hosny discusses and de-
signs a treatment plan that
best fits the need of the pa-
tient suffering from acute or
chronic pain. The goal is to
help the patient restore max-
imum function and manage
the pain.
Amr Hosny, MD, MBA,
currently serves as the Med-
ical Director of New Jersey
Pain Care Center and New
York Pain Care. Dr. Hosnys
training includes the comple-
tion of an Anesthesiology res-
idency at St. Lukes Roosevelt
Hospital Center, Columbia
University, in New York City.
He then completed an Inter-
ventional Pain Medicine fel-
lowship at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center,
Harvard Medical School, in
Boston, MA.
Dr. Hosny is an Associate
Professor of Anesthesiology at

Interventional Pain Medicine,
Anesthesiology, as well as
Hospice and Palliative Medi-
cine. He has lectured exten-
sively on topics ranging from
spinal cord stimulation for neu-

amily vacations are a tra-
dition for millions of
families across the globe.
Such vacations have declined
in number over the last several
years, when many families were
forced to cut expenses in the
midst of a struggling economy.
Though the economy has
gradually begun to rebound,
families with fresh memories
are still reticent to commit to
costly vacations. One of the
more affordable and family-
friendly vacation options is
camping. Families get the
chance to experience some of
natures most idyllic settings at
a fraction of the cost of expen-
sive resort vacations. But be-
fore venturing out in the great
outdoors, a family should con-
sider the following tips to en-
sure their camping vacation is
a swimming success.
Research the weather. Before
choosing a campsite, get a firm
grasp of what to expect from
Mother Nature while youre
there. Research weather pat-
terns and how much the
weather can vary during the
time of year when you will be
vacationing. Does the weather
fluctuate significantly during
the daytime and nighttime
hours? Is rain likely or unlikely?
Weather conditions will dic-
tate which gear is necessary for
the trip, and families might
want to avoid campgrounds
that are frequented by rain.
Adults might be able to cope
with a rainstorm or two, but
such conditions may make

Solar & More, a retail
showroom featuring solar
photovoltaic (electric), solar
thermal, geothermal systems
and numerous retail products
that reduce energy costs for
residential and commercial
customers, announced a
Grand Opening Celebration
for the public to be held on
Tuesday, June 28, 2011
through Saturday, July 2,
2011 during normal store
hours.
Were excited to be able
to offer to our clients a show-
room where they can be edu-
cated about solar and other
renewable energy options,
said Tom Ferraro, President of
Solar & More. We are dif-
ferent, and you wont find an-
other store like ours.
Ferraros showroom is
different and it can be seen
immediately upon entering
the store. Its a learning cen-
ter and all aspects of the store
are focused on helping clients
understand ways to reduce
their energy costs without
sacrificing comfort. Its a first
of its kind.
One of the key factors
preventing most people from
going solar is the misconcep-
tion that its expensive and
has a long payback, Ferraro
says. Current paybacks can
range from about 4 6 years
with most Return on Invest-
ments close to 20%. And we
help people understand that
it is an investment, as op-
posed to a home improve-
ment, as there is an ongoing
revenue stream from the day
the system goes live.
Ferraro gives an example
of a financing option where
the customer has no out of
pocket expenditures and gets
a payback of 5 years, and is
cash positive in year 1. And
the systems are warranted for
25 years, and typically last
much longer. Combining
that with a 30% Federal In-
come Tax Credit and its a
winning investmentwith-
out the risk associated with
most other investments.
During the Grand Open-
ing Celebration, all in-stock
retail products will be priced
at 20% below regular pricing.
Ferraro says this is our way of
letting people know were ex-
cited about our new store.
This store is a trusting envi-
ronment where you can see
what youre buying and the
people youre buying it from.
In this age of fast paced sell-
ing from telemarketers and
internet sales, we believe the
personal touch and local pres-
ence is important!

ood patio furni-
ture can be a dec-
orative and func-
tional addition to outdoor liv-
ing. The longevity of the fur-
niture and the upkeep
required will depend heavily
on the type of wood used in
construction. Choosing the
right wood based on use and
budget can help consumers
get more for their money.
Many consumers are se-
lecting natural wood patio
furniture over resins, plastic
and metal options. Although
it seems a simple purchase,
when faced with the multi-
tude of woods and designs
available, shoppers can be
easily confused. Learning
about the different species of
wood commonly used in fur-
niture crafting can make de-
termining why one table is
$1,000 and the other is dou-
ble the price.
Pine: Pine is a
household name
and a common
component of
many building
products and fur-
niture. Pines pop-
ularity could stem
from its availabil-
ity and affordabil-
ity. The fact that
it is often har-
vested locally
helps keep prices
down. Pine as an
untreated wood is
susceptible to rot
and may not be as
durable as other
woods. Very often
pine is pressure-
treated to improve
its durability and
performance. The
light color of pine enables it
to be stained or painted in a
variety of shades.
Teak: Another familiar type
of wood, teak is resilient,
dense and straight-grained,
making it a very stable choice
for outdoor furniture. Without
preservative, teak will weather
to a gray color and still remain
highly resistant to decay
even up to 50 years. Thanks to
that durability, teak is typi-
cally among the more expen-
sive options.
Cedar: Cedar is a rapidly re-
newable resource thanks to it
being a quick grower. That
can make cedar an attractive
choice to those who are inter-
ested in going green with their
patio furniture choices. An-
other advantage to cedar is its
resistance to weather and in-
sects. Cedar satchels are often
used in closets to keep moths
and other bugs away.
Redwood: Another softwood,
redwood is also harvested do-
mestically from the Pacific
Northwest, British Columbia
and California. Although it is
highly resistant to rot and ter-
mites, it will need to be pro-
tected annually with an
oil-based stain, sealer and pre-
server.
Roble: A wood native to
South America, roble is a
dense, strong and lightweight
wood. Darker shades of the
wood are more resist-
ant to decay. A preser-
vative oil should be
used every six months
to maintain its beauty.
Jarrah: Another exotic
sounding wood, jarrah
is harvested mostly
from government-man-
aged forests in Aus-
tralia. While this wood
is naturally resistant to
insects and rot, it is
also fire-resistant, mak-
ing it a safe option. It,
too, is one of the more
durable woods, lasting
up to 50 years even
without oiling or stain-
ing. It is one of the
pricier options in out-
door furniture thanks
to these properties.
Cypress: This is a popu-
lar wood for wood garden fur-
niture because it resists decay
and cracking very well. Cy-
press has a distinctive yellow-
ish-red color that many
people find attractive, but it
can also be painted if desired.
Brazilian Cherry: Many peo-
ple may think of this wood
only for kitchen cabinet appli-
cations, but Brazilian cherry is
dense and naturally weather-
resistant. This makes it a fine
choice for garden furniture. It
is also used in playground
equipment and decking.
Alder: Alder is a hard wood
that is valued for its strength
and durability and is related to
the birch family. It is appreci-
ated for its honey-hued tone
and beauty.
Balau: Balau is a very dense
wood that is tightly grained

Washington called home dur-

the beginnings of America
has been preserved for the

unchanged since 1799, the
tombs of George and Martha
Washington, as well as a
walking tour through the
18th century home. See the
original artisanship that
wowed young and old alike in
the entertaining dining room
and parlor. Go further to the

and rich in tropical oils and
resins. It has been used for
shipbuilding, heavy-duty fur-
niture and heavy construction
and coveted for its excellent
strength and weather-resistant
qualities. It is very strong and
heavy, making it one of the
sought-after choices in out-
door wood furniture materials,
driving up the price.
Although many types of
wood patio furniture can be
kept outdoors and remain
durable, its recommended
that homeowners cover or
take in wood furniture when
the season ends. This limits
the chance of weather-related
damage and cuts down on the
amount of cleaning and main-
tenance that may need to be
done.
Many homeowners find
that wood patio furniture pro-
vides the beauty and comfort
they desire for outdoor enter-
taining. Very often wood
items can be low-mainte-
nance, affordable and envi-
ronmentally friendly.

INJURY: Trauma to the neck
must be treated appropriately,
beginning with an accurate di-
agnosis. Accurate diagnosis of
neck trauma, whether it was the
result of a car accident, fall,
sports or some other injury,
should always include x-ray. X-
ray is used to assess the struc-
tural condition of the spine,
including the cervical curve.
Abnormal curves in the cervi-
cal spine are major contributors
to chronic neck pain, headache
and other neck related prob-
lems. Chiropractic treatment
has been shown to correct or
improve abnormal spinal
curves.
STRESS: We all must deal
with stress in our lives. How we
deal with it determines the level
of tension we feel, and this can
play a significant role in
whether or not we experience
neck related symptoms. To help
us cope with stress more effec-
tively, several behavior or atti-
tude adjustments may be
beneficial. Exercise moderately
three to for times a week for
about 45 minutes. Make ade-
quate sleep and a healthy diet
priorities. Maintain balance in
your life between work and play,
and in your relationships. Keep
life in perspective. See the
lighter side of situations. Seek
and express humor.

teak ... its the ultimate
mans food. Which makes
it the ideal centerpiece
for a meal celebrating the spe-
cial men in your life.
This Fathers Day a meal based
around steak is sure to be a hit
with Dad, Grandpa or any other
men you would like to honor.
Giving that steak an extra
kick will make it even more of
a crowd-pleaser.
Try this recipe for Grilled
Chipotle Steak Sandwiches,
which marries spice, heat and
grilling for the ideal flavor. Its
an easy recipe to create for a Fa-
thers Day lunch. Its certain to
become a family favorite and
can be enjoyed again and again
this grilling season.
Grilled Chipotle Steak
Sandwiches
Marinade
1/2 cup favorite steak sauce or
worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup lime juice
1 medium tomato,
chopped
1 chipotle pepper in adobo
sauce, chopped
1 tablespoon oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste
1 flank steak, or favorite
steak (about 1 pound)
1 loaf crusty French or
Italian bread
Butter for spreading
1/4 cup shredded Monterey
Jack cheese
Mix all marinade ingredi-
ents in a bowl. Reserve about
one-third cup of the marinade
and pour the rest into a reseal-
able plastic bag. Add the steak
to the bag and allow to marinate
for an hour or more in the refrig-
erator.
Spray the grill with non-
stick cooking spray. Heat the
grill to medium heat.
Remove the steak from the
bag and place on the grill. Allow
to cook 17 to 20 minutes for
medium-rare doneness, or until
desired doneness. Brush the
steak while cooking with the re-
served marinade dont use
the marinade that was in the
bag with the meat.
Remove the steak and let
it rest for 10 minutes.
Slice the bread lengthwise
and butter each half. Sprinkle
on the shredded cheese. Put
bread on the grill to toast
slightly and melt the cheese.
Slice the meat and place
on the bread. Cut into serving-
size portions and enjoy with
your favorite side dish.

Celebrate Dads Day with a delicious meal
Treat Dad to a delicious grilled steak meal for Fathers Day.
A
tiered wedding cake
is often a fitting con-
clusion to a wedding
reception. Todays brides and
grooms are experimenting with
cake flavors and designs so
their cake is a unique represen-
tation of their persona as a
couple.
Its no longer necessary to
stick with a white cake with
buttercream frosting for your
wedding day. Think about ex-
ploring other flavor and filling
combinations that will tempt
the guests taste buds. For those
who cant settle on just one fla-
vor, how about having a differ-
ent flavor for each layer?
Couples getting married
in the fall may want to think
about a spice cake that evokes
the feelings of sipping a mug of
spiced cider. Cream cheese
frosting is often a pairing with
spice cake, or think about a
layer of caramel that will make
it taste like youre enjoying a
candied Halloween apple.
A hummingbird cake may
fit the bill for a spring wedding.
This is made with mashed ba-
nanas, pineapples and chopped
pecans. This cake is perfect
when paired with cream
cheese frosting.
Yellow or white cake are
universal favorites for wed-
dings. Some pizzazz can be
added through the use of cre-
ative fillings. Consider some-
thing citrusy and summery for
a summer wedding. Raspberry
preserves or lemon curd are
tart and sweet. For a tropical
flair, mangoes or passion fruit
can be mixed with touches of
coconut.
A winter wedding can be
accented with rich flavors, like
a decadent chocolate cake
filled with chocolate
ganache and black
cherries in a
black forest style.
Those toasting to
the good life may
want an almond
cake enhanced with
some fine liqueur
and simple choco-
late buttercream.
Couples should
sit down with their
baker and sample a
number of flavor
combinations to de-
termine a recipe
that works for them.
Pastry compa-
nies also may be
able to develop a
cake that encom-
passes a couples favorite fla-
vors or symbolizes a special
moment in their lives. A
Boston Cream Pie-inspired
cake may liven up the wedding
of a couple who became en-
gaged in Boston. Maybe a can-
noli cream filled cake will
usher in memories of a trip to
Italy. Kids at heart can enjoy
candy confection cakes filled
with gooey chocolate, nuts and
marshmallows.
Whatever the case, cou-
ples can use their cake as a
centerpiece that wows the
senses of taste as well as vision.
Consider displaying this culi-
nary masterpiece on a table
with the seating cards placed
around it so that it can be en-
joyed the entire night.

Find an activity-friendly
campground. When looking for
a campground, look for one
that boasts a lot of activities.
Adults might enjoy the simple
relaxation of camping, but kids
will likely need more to do.
Look for a campground that
can offer activities the children
will like, such as hiking, kayak-
ing, rafting, or even mountain
biking.
Determine who you are as
campers. Not all campers enjoy
the rustic life of camping. Some
need to combine camping with
the amenities of modern life,
including running water and
toilets that flush. Campers
should be honest with them-
selves in regards to their needs
in amenities when researching
campgrounds. If you and your
family will need a shower, con-
sider renting an RV for the trip
or choose a campground with
accessible showers and rest-
rooms. Veteran campers might
scoff at such amenities, but
families would likely prefer
some combination of roughing
it in the wild and modern day
living.
Get the right gear. Entry to
many campgrounds is free or
nearly free. However, camping
gear could cost money. The
good thing about camping gear
is its reusable. If this years
camping trip is a success, then
next years trip wont cost
nearly as much. Visit a local
camping store and explain your
situation, including what you
hope to get out of the camping

Make your family camping trip a success
trip and where youll be head-
ing. An associate should be
able to help you find the right
gear for your trip, including a
tent, lights, a water filter, cook-
ing materials, and inflatable
mattresses. The materials
needed for a successful camping
trip are many, but again these
materials are reusable and can
last a lifetime if families choose
the right gear.
Stock up on the essentials.
Once you have purchased the
right gear, dont forget to stock
up on the other essentials. Par-
ticularly during the warmer
months, campgrounds can be
very hot and insects abound. Be
sure to bring adequate amounts
of sunscreen and bug spray and
apply each liberally every day.
Even if the sky is overcast,
apply sunscreen to avoid
painful sunburn. Other essen-
tials include toilet paper (bring
more than you expect to use),
bottled water, plates and uten-
sils, and garbage bags. Be sure to
bring extra garbage bags to
avoid littering in the camp-
ground.
Dont forget to have fun. Fam-
ilies should emphasize having
fun when visiting the camp-
ground. Because camping is not
a resort-style vacation, its up to
Mom and Dad to entertain the
kids. Bring along a guitar for a
campfire sing-a-long, and pack
a few board games the family
can enjoy under the stars at
night. If a nearby park is known
for being especially family-
friendly, consider it as a camp-
site. Kids might meet fellow
campers their own age and
make some new friends.
