Looking for to expand my investigative horizons, and being done with my Chemical Engineering coursework in Universidad Nacional de Colombia, I chose to do my Masters Degree in Germany, since it is a culturally rich country and wider in extension when it comes to investigation. I go back to 2002 when I joined Munster University (Westfalische-Wilhelms) where my studies in Applied Chemistry were completed, until 2003, and I was done with my Masters degree in 2004. In this University I researched a physical chemical model to prediction of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in hydrophilic polymers and the study of experimental variables effect on the Shell based particles. When I joined Fraunhofer Institute for Environment, Safety & Energy Technology (2003-2004) as assistant investigator, I enriched my investigative background, mostly due to the team headed by Dr. Jrgen Bertling, who was in charge of Materials and Interaction section, along with investigators such as Dr. Erich Jelen (in charge of wood, HDT, impregnation and materials characterization Area), Dr. Anke Nellesen (in charge of nano and micro particles modification and dispersion, nanocompounds material development and nano and micro particles dispersion polymers modification), Dr Andreas Sengespeick (in charge of microencapsuling, dispersion and formulation of nano and micro particles and materials characterization). We performed advanced materials studies. In this Institute I took part in publishing the articles Microsieve and confocal microscopy (Annual Report of the Institute, page 33, 2003) , Modeling of the particle morphology in spray drying (Annual Report of the Institute, page 35, 2003), coated pigments and microencapsulated additivies (Annual Report of the Institute, page 49, 2004), , modeling of dispersed systems (Annual Report of the Institute, page 50, 2004) y expandable polymers for sealing technology (Annual Report of the Institute, page 51, 2004).

Working in parallel, Dr. Helmut Fll, head of Science Materials Institute of Technical Faculty in University Christian Albrecths, in Kiel, was researching in semiconducting materials; those investigations were great bibliographic references, since he mentioned in the study the Titanium Oxide properties under different conditions, and it was a very well used compound in my researching field in advanced materials, specifically during the investigation coated pigments and microencapsulated additivies. Subsequently, his later articles centered on topics such as Silica semiconductors; forbidden photonic gap material in two dimensions adequate to spectral range in near IR; crystal orientation and electrolytes dependence to macropore nucleation and stable growing on it; porous semiconductors, nanopores and emergent applications; nano structured materials and catalysis applications, were an invaluable support in my researching work by the time of coming back to Colombia. Being back in my country, in Universidad de Los Andes, and working along with people in the photocatalysis and advanced oxidation areas, articles concerning those investigations were published: (GABRIEL CAMARGO, V SARRIA, JOAQUIN ENRIQUE TIRANO VANEGAS, LUISA GOMEZ, Photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A in an aqueous suspension of titanium dioxide . Libro:Aiche Annual Meeting, Conference Proceedings, Philadelphia, Pa, Nov. 2008, Aiche , p.1 - 7 , v.1 <, fasc.1), (JOAQUIN ENRIQUE TIRANO VANEGAS, L GIRALDO, J C MORENO PIRAJAN, G CAMARGO, J V JUYO, Application of zeolite NaY and waste FCC catalyst for Hg removal from contaminated water . En: United States of America. 2008. Event: The 236th ACS National Meeting Presentation: Book: Photocatalytic Degradation Of Bisphenol A In An Aqueous Suspension Of Titanium Dioxide, p.1 - 2 , v.1 <, fasc.1). Again, articles and publications from Dr. Fll were primary to develop those investigations. Later on, in 2010, I joined the Chemical Engineering Department at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, being this an honor to me, since this is the most important higher education institution in Colombia, and specially, this is the place I began acquiring knowledge and passion for Chemical Engineering. 2.2. Trip Main Goals Is being in the Chemical Engineering Department of Universidad Nacional de Colombia where me and my students have been interested a lot in pore formation techniques in microstructures, specially that one developed on Materials Science Institute in University Christian Albrecths in Kiel, endorsed by its director Dr. Helmut Fll, Etch (Technique for pore formation microestructures). Currently, we have decided to apply to this specific DAAD scholarship, since this in an opportunity either to consolidate or make contacts of this academic kind, which would allow us a close collaboration in future investigations. Moths ago we have been contacting different
5

institutions and universities, especially with Christian Albrecths University in Kiel due to the meaning and relevance that Dr. Helmut Fll had on my investigations, based on this, the scholarship offered by DAAD is a great chance to strengthen our relationship with this institution and some others with an equivalent importance. All of the students in the group have taken at least half of the Chemical Engineering coursework and they have the enough knowledge in order to easily get the ideas and topics on the different visits, is important to emphasize that some of them belong to investigation groups assigned to the Chemical Engineering Department inside Universidad Nacional de Colombia, groups guaranteed by COLCIENCIAS (Colombian Institute to Science and Technology Development) and of relevance in the areas chosen by the universities we are looking forward to visit in Germany. As well as, it is important to say that this trip could be really helpful for the students in order to pick up their later specializations. In summary, by acquiring the knowledge through seminars, conferences and and laboratory guided visits offered by the contacted Universities we pretend to strengthen concepts and get used to techniques, equipment and methods, some of them not available in Colombia. The trip main purpose is to create a strong relationship between Chemical Engineering Department in Universidad Nacional de Colombia and the different universities in Germany, to accomplish these tasks we hope to share our advances in the investigative field, as well as to receive experiences from them to apply them later. Besides, we are willing to find some possible exchanges of later visits with cultural and investigative purposes. It is important to remark within the trip goals, we are looking forward to find information about post graduate programs in German universities and academic opportunities offered by them, everything to cheer the students up to join the activities and programs, contacts with international offices in the universities have been made to find the information out. One point that could be considered is that Chemical Engineering Department on Universidad Nacional de Colombia has never been benefited with this specific scholarship to studies offered by DAAD, currently this Department is developing an Internationalization Program whose main goal is to define strategic partnerships with higher education institutions all around the world to make students and professors join the international activities such as interchange semesters or years abroad, internships, research assistantships and language courses, among others, is important to remark that the research assistantships is not only an institutional goal, but ours too. In regards to culture, Germany offers us a historical bastion filled with cultural richness. Well known by its impressive edifications representing the massive development of architecture over millenniums, expressed in several castles and sculptures, admired by majestic mountains and wide prairies, the landscape becomes a delight to its visitors. In academic regards, Germany
6

stands out by its innovation, and in our specific field of knowledge, it is one of the world leaders in bio fuels research, waste management and materials science. The European country has seen many industries being born in its land, such as breweries, chemical companies, automobile and mechanical, among others. Amazing poets and philosophers have made of Germany an insignia, in the same way the great composers and well known orchestras have done. Germany has been the place of huge historical events and is possesses innumerable amount of museums that summarizes its past and its traditions. The touristic places to be visited, Elbauenpark, the city Opera in Kiel and the Reichstag, the most popular place to visit in Berlin, among other representative places in each city show us a historical tour of German civilization and its costumes. All the mentioned above when it comes to culture makes of Germany a great cultural and academic destiny, this is the reason we would be immensely thankful if DAAD give us the scholarship. Materials science has been a lately implemented area in the Chemical Engineering Department in our university, and there is a big likelihood it has been not well researched in our country. The department, willing to update the curriculum, has incorporated related-area professors to the institution, many of them completed their post graduate studies in universities from the United States and Germany, this is the reason most of the contacted universities possess a vast experience in materials science field and a great development in other related areas. During the stay we will visit five (5) different universities in several cities: Christian-AlbrechtsUniversitt zu Kiel (Kiel), Otto-von-Guericke-Universitt Magdeburg (Magdeburg), Universitt Rostock (rostock), Hochschule Mannheim (Mannheim) and University of Tbingen (Tbingen). As it was mentioned before, we are looking forward to visit Kiel University by its advanced studies in Materials Science and the academic relationship we have with the institute headed by Dr. Helmut Fll. Magdeburg University is in our itinerary due it has a well-known Faculty of Processes, being outstanding the Chemistry & Processes Engineering Institute and, besides it has a big Chemical Engineering Department with an extense knowledge in subjects concerning to design and optimization of chemical and biochemical processes, we are invited to join the international program Quality, Safety & Environment in the university, program that is recognized as prestigious at a worldwide level. Rostock University has a Chemical Institute where researches around technical chemistry, science materials and catalysis are performed. Presentations of Leibniz Catalysis Institute were got through this university; the last one performs research in selective oxidation, active catalytic materials preparation and inorganic porous nano-membranes, engineering of reactions and high performance methods and asymmetric catalysis.
7

Mannheim University possesses 3 institutes to our interest inside its Chemical Engineering Department: Chemical Engineering and Electrocatalysis Institute, topics about Microreactor with GC/MS coupling; Thermal Processes Engineering Institute, topics about several diameters distillation columns (DN30 DN400) will be discussed; and the Flow sheet Simulation Institute. Finally, Tbingen University opens its doors to us with the Chemistry and Biochemistry Departments emphasizing in the biocatalyst area, bioprocesses, energy conversion and storage, and, science materials. All of the areas above are according with the exclusive and innovator topics in Chemical Engineering, we wanted to remark on them due the small experience our country has on some of them, or they are just being implemented here. The beginning in the dreams projection for our students is the first step to face the world challenges, it is a chance to them to visualize the future and start building goals. We as an institution hope them to culminate their coursework as professionals with huge knowledge in order to contribute to scientific advance, the improvement and development of industrial processes and in this way help to Colombias transformation, making reality the Universidad Nacional goals when it comes to prepare upright professionals in academic and socio- cultural fields, who are capable of pay back to the country by using its knowledge. 3. Itinerary First than all, and it might be the most important consideration issue by DAAD, is the fact we have scheduled a 18 days program, since we have got invitation letters to accomplish a great academic enrichment in that time. We have to say we did read carefully the application terms, in regards to time, we know we can be financed by DAAD 12 days, but we are willing to pay expenses for those 6 extra days in order to know more institutions of our interest. However, it is important to say that we know the final decision taken could be based on how well we followed the timing offered by DAAD, which is the reason we will have no problems if you consider some visits need to be cut off from the schedule, everything in order to adjust DAAD policies. The itinerary that we have prepared takes into account the dates that the universities have offered to us and their limitations, we are aware that the proposed route is not the best so we are open to changes in it, this means, we know the time in traveling from one to another place could be reduced, however we have to remark it has been built that way according to time the universities have offered to us as the best. The universities of Kiel, Magdeburg and Rostock have sent us a confirmed program that we took into account to make the itinerary, Mannheim

and Tbingen universities have not sent us a confirmed program so we have prepared a possible one. During the time that we have planned be in Germany, we have scheduled five visits to five different universities. After the arrival to Berlin we have planned staying there for one night to visit some of the most representative places. From there we will go to Kiel where we will stay for four nights, where Dr. Helmut Fll has created a whole program for us including visits to laboratories, to the department, talks about research projects and academic topics that we have proposed, and, the presentation of the study courses. There will be also time to the cultural area and the city tours; we will visit the opera and the international maritime museum in
Hamburgo.

After Kiel we plan to stay three nights at Magdeburg where Dr. Uwe Geneztke has created for us a full program that begins with the reception from the international office. It includes talks with the Dean and the Vice Dean about the study programs of the chemical and process engineering faculty, academic talks about their investigation projects and also access the Quality, safety and environment program. Dr. Geneztke has also planned some tours to the most representative places like the Millennium tower located on the beautiful Elbauenpark and to the Experimental factory, this last one for give us a wider point of view of the chemical industry. Next we will stay three nights at Rostock, where we will visit the Leibniz Institute and the chemical institute. There will be also academic talks about the catalysis investigations projects, city tours and concerts. Then we will stay three nights at Mannheim, where we will visit the chemical engineering institutes and finally we will stay three nights at Tbingen where the lectures topics will be about the science faculty and the importance of this in chemical engineering. The departure from Bogot is meant to be on June 3rd, Friday and hopefully we will arrive to Berlin in the afternoon of June 4th. 4. Preliminary training Since we heard about the DAAD summons we have been taking in preparation both academic and cultural issues. This has been taken place since September of 2010, with the objective of acquiring knowledge of the topics to treat and the Germany culture. We have prepared ourselves using research articles, lectures and help from some professors of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. To contact the universities, we split in 3 different groups, 5 members each one, who were in charge to find possible universities to visit and email either the Chemical Engineering or the Science Materials Department. In this process, we built a list made up of around 50 possible universities in different cities, among them Berlin, Bochum, Dresden, Munich, Kassel, Dortmund, Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Mainz and many others. The following step was to wait for some reply to the sent request; some of them never gave us an answer, some other replied in a nice way telling us the visit could not be possible because of some other activities they were planning by the same days. This researching and contact process started in middle October 2010, and some of the answers were received in early November, then we had green light to start the next step, start discussing with them the possible activities were going to be performed in the different institutions, the activities were chosen based in comparing and matching areas or our interest and those offered by the universities. As a nice surprise, some of them replied with a detailed academic program, and including on it amazing cultural activities. In addition, to make sure we were keeping the right straight way, we went to DAAD Office in Bogot, were we received with such a friendly advice from Dr. Sven Werkmeister, who received us at 3 different moments to gave us information and guidance in order to do a good application, we are very thankful to him. It is not less important to mention how we contacted students from the Pharmacy Department, they have applied successfully before to this DAAD Scholarship, and they offered us help and guidance during the process, especially Graduated Student Oscar Leonardo Avendao, who was aware of the process advance from the beginning. With all of the above steps done, it was time to think about the financial regard, since we know we have to pay for the tickets and the 6 extra days (if possible) we are planning some events to earn some extra money, for example, a Dessert Festival which is going to take place in front of the engineering classrooms building and in front of the Science & Tech Library. Hopefully, if we are benefited by the DAAD decision, Faculty of Engineering is willing to help us in this regard with a percent no bigger than 30% of the total amount for each one of us; anyway, everyone in the group is ready to find a weekend part time job.
19

4.1. Cultural and academic preparation. The chosen topics in cultural and academic ambits were treated for students and me, according to the topics presented on the program. In this way we have made seminars, debates and expositions between students and some staff members from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. We have also encouraged conferences and presentations from professors of the specifics areas of each visit, this looking to generate a complete illustration of all the topics to be treat en each German university. In addition we count with several consultancies in the materials science topic thanks to the associate professor from the chemical engineering department from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Dr. Hugo Zea Ramrez (PhD. New Mexico University), we made talks with the magister students from the investigation group of environmental catalysis and materials from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. The seminars about the generalities of the cities to visit were focus in showing the citizens life, weather, museums y monuments, gastronomy and transport mediums. It was possible to create a working table with department directors and administrative order to perform together a presentation about our chemical engineering program, studies and investigations; this will be made in each university that we will visit. Also we achieve a visit in mid February 2011 in the company Carbochemistry in Bogot, to visit the dependence on new developments. 4.2. Language preparation The activities prepared to all the visits will be done in English; we have taken short English lessons emphasizing on the technical English and the Science & Engineering vocabulary that will be used on the visits. In general, the group counts with a good domain of English language; therefore there will be not a problem in the activities to be developed. We have encouraged the use of lectures and research articles on English to practice, and we have organized sessions where the most advanced and fluent students help those who are good. 5.
