Set up in 1635 at the instigation of Jean Hroard, chief physician to Louis XIII, and Guy de La Brosse, physician in ordinary,

the royal garden of medicinal plants became the Jardin des Plantes (or Botanical Garden) following the Revolution. In the same spirit of change, the Convention established the Museum of Natural History in June 1793. From the start, this great institution for higher education and research has played a major national and international role in the development of natural history. Today, the Museum remains a favoured institution for multi-disciplinary research in the fields of natural and human science. Intimately linked to its research function, the Museum also fulfils a heritage-related mission: that of preserving and caring for important collections. These include several tens of millions of specimens and items that make up a treasury for all of humankind. The distribution of knowledge, as well as educational and cultural programmes, forms a complement to its missions in the fields of research, expert assessment and conservation. The original character of the Museum is based on these complementary aspects, and thus forms a formidable scientific, educational and cultural tool. It awaits you, and invites you to share in its riches.
