Business Challenge

Challenge
Install Internet telephony for the company Wide Area Network while ensuring high quality VoIP sound and voice connectivity.

In 2002 and 2003, Nippon Paint sought to step up efforts to develop and sell environmentally friendly products while reforming its business and cost structures. Business reforms included the migration to Internet telephony for the company's 7 main locations with 700 analog phones and linked by a Wide Area Network. In Japan, our corporate goals are to pursue cost-cutting measures and expand market share by developing environmentally friendly, high-value-added products, said Mr. Toshihiro Manabe, Nippon Paints Information System Assistant Manager. As part of this, we decided to migrate to Internet telephony. It was obvious to everyone involved that the success of the project rollout would hinge on the quality of telephone service, Manabe added. Our employees would have to receive sound quality from VoIP that equaled that of traditional telephony. Delay or jitter would simply not be acceptable.

Solution
NetEnforcer traffic management devices prioritize bandwidth traffic to ensure quality of VoIP service and guarantee performance.

Benefits
VoIP control Real-time monitoring Alert mechanism

The NetEnforcer Solution

As we started the rollout of VoIP, we realized that we needed dedicated traffic management devices, remarked Toshihiro. We were getting good connectivity from our state-of-the-art Wide Area Ethernet, but we were not getting the required quality of voice for normal conversations during peak hours. This issue was especially important at our offices in Tokyo and Neyagawa where we had the heaviest usage. Our system integrator spoke very highly of Allots NetEnforcer and we soon realized that it was the best product for the job. Nippon Paint has a Wide Area Network from NTT VLAN that connects its Osaka headquarters to its branch offices in Tokyo and Neyagawa and to its factories in Hiroshima, Aichi, Tochigi and Chiba. Each Ethernet link is a point-to-point WAN connection used as a Layer-2 network. Factories in Hofu and Fukuoka have separate VoIP connections not on the Wide Area Network. "We decided to purchase four NetEnforcer devices and to place one device at our branch offices in Tokyo and Neyagawa and two devices at our headquarters, on each of our Ethernet connections. After installing the NetEnforcer, our users immediately noticed the increased quality of the VoIP service."

The Policy-Powered Network Advantage

The choice of Allots NetEnforcer solution offered Nippon Paint compelling advantages: VoIP Control Nippon Paint is able to successfully identify the H.323 VoIP protocol and then prioritize its traffic in order to ensure telephony-like quality for VoIP users. Real-Time Monitoring The Java-based Traffic Monitor enables Nippon Paint to monitor network activity with over 100 real-time and long-term views of traffic and performance data. Alert Mechanism The NetEnforcer enables the Nippon Paint networking team to set thresholds for P2P, SoftEther and other types of traffic, and instantly get alerts whenever such traffic occurs or reaches a predefined threshold.

In Conclusion
The NetEnforcer's support for H.323 was instrumental in the success of our corporate-wide rollout of VoIP-enabled phones," concludes Toshihiro. "In fact, we were so impressed with NetEnforcer's performance that we acquired a fifth NetEnforcer to monitor and control SoftEther traffic on our Internet access link and protect the network from unauthorized access.
