BJT AC AMPLIFIER

OBJECTIVES To study the DC bias voltages and AC voltage gain of a simple common emitter circuit.

DISCUSSION Voltage divider bias circuits are used because of the stability of the base voltage and collector current against changes in the transistor gain (Beta). The common emitter amplifier is also referred to as an inverting amplifier since the input signal on the base is amplified and output on the collector is 180 degrees out of phase.

1. Using the DMM and RCL meter measure Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Re, C1, C2, and . Record below.

Rb1 = _________ ,

Rb2 = _________ ,

Rc = _________ ,

Re = _________

C1 = _____________

C2 = ______________

= _______________

2. Construct the circuit shown in Figure 4-1 below. Leave the voltage-dividing resistor R2 and the bypass capacitor C2 disconnected initially. Connect CH#1 and CH#2 of the scope to the circuit as shown. Set CH#1 and CH#2 to AC coupling.

3. Measure the dc values for VB , VC and VE and enter them into Table 4-1. 4. Set the function generator to HIGH-Z mode. 5. Using the function generator input a 5 kHz sine wave vs on the base of the amplifier circuit through the coupling capacitor C1. Adjust the amplitude slowly until the VO on the collector is maximum without any distortion. Calculate the voltage gain AV (Vout/Vin) without the bypass capacitor C2 and enter this value into Table 4-1. 6. Connect R2 and the bypass capacitor C2. Repeat Step 4 and 5 above. Record all data in Table 4-1.
