Appendix D The Civil War

Part One: Union and Confederate Home Fronts
Fill in the following matrix with the experiences on the Union home front and the Confederate home front. Include at least two experiences that illustrate the differences between the two home fronts and two experiences that illustrate the similarities on the two home fronts.

Civil War Home Fronts

Union Home Front
Social and economic viewpoints were very different. The Union, unlike the Confederates, wanted to end slavery. They considered slaves human and therefore not the property of their owners. The Union, since it was industrialized, did not rely on slave labor. Union and Confederate home fronts faced hardship during the war, from factors such as disease, bad medical care, lack of food, corruption of morality, and a rising number of deaths. Both sides suffered from moral decay. At the same time, women of both sides found new opportunities to work outside the home.

Confederate Home Front

The Confederate home front considered slaves property and had newish to end slavery. Since they believed that slaves were the property of their owners, they expected runaway slaves to be returned. Since the Confederacy was not industrialized, it relied heavily on the human labor of slaves. Union and Confederate home fronts faced hardship during the war, from factors such as disease, bad medical care, lack of food, corruption of morality, and a rising number of deaths. Both sides suffered from moral decay. At the same time, women of both sides found new opportunities to work outside the home. Many women now had the chance to run farms or enter the nursing or medical field while the men were at war.

4. Both Union and Confederate generals 5. Exhausted Southern forces

Write a 100- to 200-word response explaining your rationale for the order you chose.

The outcome of the Civil War was greatly affected by Lincoln's leadership and political views. His most important acts were when he suspended habeas corpus and his interfered with civil liberties (Davidson, 2005). Lincoln did not initially want to use the war to aim for the emancipation of the slaves, but the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation became of great symbolic importance in the war (Davidson, 2005). Because of this proclamation, the North began the fight to create a new America. Lincoln also helped convince African Americans to join the Civil War effort, which changed the war's outcome. African Americans worked in the Confederacy to fight slavery from within, while they also contributed significantly to the Union's military victory (Davidson, 2005).Technological advances and new weaponry revolutionized war and the way that war was fought. These advances were significant to the end of the war, but they also increased the massive death toll from this conflict (Davidson, 2005). Both side had generals whose strategy and choices changed the war's outcome. Southern generals, like Lee, had technical skill but lacked effective power. Southern generals also did not have the same level of offensive or defensive strategy, compared to the North. The most significant Northern generals, like Grant, won battle after battle with fewer casualties to Northern forces (Davidson, 2005). All of these factors helped to exhaust the Southern military, as each battle that the South lost came with a comparatively high number of casualties. It is hard to say which factor was the most significant, but all of them played a part together, in ensuring the outcome of the war.
