The East-West Center is a leader in educating people of the Asia Pacific region, including the United States, to meet the evolving demands and interdependency of global change. The Center offers a range of educational opportunities, bringing together more than 500 students each year from across the region. While at the Center, student fellows learn, work, and live together, and extend helping hands to the local community. Through cultural exchange, shared experiences, and collaborative preparation for future leadership roles throughout the region, the East-West Center experience creates lasting relationships and an active social network of people committed to positive change. The East-West Center promotes better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific through cooperative study, research, and dialogue. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, the Center serves as a resource for information and analysis on critical issues of common concern, bringing people together to exchange views, build expertise, and develop policy options. The Center is an independent, public, non-profit organization with funding from the U.S. government, and additional support provided by private agencies, individuals, foundations, corporations, and governments in the region.

Opportunities for Study and Scholarships at the East-West Center


Overview Type of Study A five- or nine-month course of study; includes seminars, field studies, and internships. Eligibility Early- to mid-career professionals, currently enrolled graduate students, and recent university graduates from all countries. Provisions Tuition, field studies, and health insurance. Supplemental assistance for living expenses and housing in graduate residence hall. Application Deadline December 1

Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP)

An innovative, graduate-level certificate program that combines the development of regional expertise with the enhancement of individual leadership skills.

Funding for graduate study to participate in residential, education and research programs at the EastWest Center while pursuing graduate degree at the University of Hawaii.

Masters degree (up to 24-month fellowship) or Doctoral degree (up to 48-month fellowship).

Citizens or permanent residents of the United States and citizens of countries in the Pacific and Asia.

An opportunity for graduate students from universities around the world to have a short-term affiliation with the Center while working on research for a thesis or dissertation related to the Asia Pacific region.

Intensive research for a few months up to one year; participation in the Centers residential, educational and research programs.

Graduate students from universities world-wide, to work on research for a thesis or dissertation. Priority given to students with research interests in the Asia Pacific region. Full-time graduate student status at the University of Hawaii, or participation in a graduate exchange program at UH. Open to students from all countries; priority given to students with research interests in the Asia Pacific region. Citizens of the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

Research library access; discounted housing rate in the Centers graduate residence halls.

Applications are received year-round and arranged individually.

An opportunity for students to participate in residential, educational and cultural programs at the East-West Center while pursuing graduate degree at the University of Hawaii.

Participation in Center educational and residential programs focused on creating an Asia Pacific community through research, dialogue, educational and cultural activities, and public outreach.

Discounted housing rate in Center residence halls; eligible for competitive EWC field study/travel grant awards.

United States South Pacific Scholarship Program (USSP)

Provides educational opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students from South Pacific nations in fields of study meeting development needs in the region. Funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

United States Timor-Leste Scholarship Program (USTL) Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Scholarship Program Obuchi Student Scholarship Program

Provides educational opportunities for undergraduate students from TimorLeste in fields of study meeting the countrys development needs. Funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State.

SEAMEO-Vietnam provides funding for graduate study in approved fields at the University of Hawaii, and supports participation in the residential and educational activities at the East-West Center.

Scholarships are awarded to Vietnamese citizens with the objective of building local human capacity through upgrading the qualifications of career professionals.
