Fireworks Spectacular Returns to Lake Oroville

The Lake Oroville Fireworks Spectacular will again light up the sky over Lake Oroville in celebration of our nations birthday. The fireworks blast off around 9:30 pm on July 4. This free show may be viewed from the lake, on Oroville Dam and other spots around the lake. The show was cancelled due to a lack of funding in 2009. Fortunately, a combination of public and private funding sources stepped up to help keep the popular community event alive. Contributors include Feather Falls Casino, Lodge and Brewing Company, Forever Resorts Bidwell Canyon Marina and Lime Saddle Marina, and the City of Oroville. Numerous public safety agencies have also pledged logistical support and staffing for the event. The chamber is pleased and honored to be a part of this celebration of our nations birth, said Claudia Knaus, president/CEO of the Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce. We are delighted at the support shown by the sponsors and state agencies, and by the enthusiasm shown by the community. And with lake levels so far up, this years show should be more spectacular than ever. This free show draws people from all over the Northstate and beyond, and was featured in Via Magazine several years ago as one of the premier fireworks shows in the western United States. The popular event provides a boost to the local economy and valuable exposure for Oroville, and is a point of pride for the community. The show begins around 9:30 pm on Sunday, July 4, directly upstream of Oroville Dam. Thousands of people will pack the top of the dam and thousands more will view the display from boats on the lake. The 20-minute show will feature more than 900 individual shells, which is hundreds more than in past shows. No shuttle busses will run this year and parking near the dam is limited, so carpooling is highly recommended. Open fires and barbeques are not allowed in parking areas or on the dam. A limited number of vending spots are available on the dam for non-profit organizations. Summer Art Academy at CSUC

Turner Print Museum to Offer 9th Annual Summer Art Academy, July 25-29, at Chico State Nine years ago Barbara Morris (who is a Janet Turner Print Museum Board member and current outgoing president) felt that there were not enough arts programs offered in the summer in Chico for kids. She organized the first Janet Turner Print Museum Summer Art Academy and it was a big hit. Ever since, in conjunction with faculty and students from the Chico State Art Department, and staff from the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, the Turner has offered an academy. This years Summer Art Academy will be offered July 25-29. There will be separate sessions for children, pre-teens, and ages 14 and older. Participants will explore printmaking, ceramics, painting, drawing, sculpture, collage and more. Classes are held on the CSU, Chico campus and lunches will be provided. Session A will be for kids 6-10 years of age and run Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Session B (ages 11-13) and Section C (14 years of age and older) will take place Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On Friday, July 29, the last day of the art academy, parents, friends, and other family members will be invited to an outdoor celebration where they will be able to view the art that was created during the week-long program. Cost for kids up to 10 years of age is $200; all others are $225 each. There is a $50 discount for a second family member. Art Department chair Teresa Cotner will be joined by fellow instructors Mike Murphy, a ceramic arts teacher at Chico State, and Linda Teddy, a recent graduate of the BA art education program and BA studio art program at CSU, Chico. Also assisting will be a number of Chico State art majors. Each class will be limited to no more than 24 participants. The student to teacher ratio works out to about four or five students for every instructor and Chico State student intern. The Summer art Academy will be especially beneficial for kids who love making art and kids whose schools have not been able to offer a lot of quality art instruction because of budget cuts. We love putting on the academy and working with the kids, said Cotner. And, of course, it is fun and a great learning experience for the Chico State student instructors. Cotner added, We offer kids experiences with art that they will not get at school, using new techniques in art that Chico State students bring to the lessons they develop and teach. Art should be a part of every childs education and the Turner Art Academy helps make this possible. Beginning July 1, 2011, all students entering grades 7-12 must provide proof of having immunization against whooping cough (Tdap) before starting school. In light of Californias recent whooping cough (also known as pertussis) epidemic, there is no reason to wait for the new school year. Its important that incoming 7th12th graders see their doctor and get immunized, said Dr. Mark Lundberg, Butte County Health Officer. Getting Tdap now will not only meet the new school requirement, but it will also protect our children from the constant threat of pertussis. This new school requirement applies to all public and private schools. Californias parents are being urged not to wait for the new fall school year, since there will be no grace period. Under the new law, students will not be allowed to start school without proof of vaccination. Scheduling an appointment right before the beginning of the school year may be difficult, said Dr. Lundberg. Its important that parents immunize their children right away and prevent them from getting behind in school. Tdap is not the same as DTaP. DTaP is a childhood vaccine provided to children under the age of 7 that protects against Pertussis. A Tdap booster is given to adolescent children over the age of 7. Tdap is a booster for Pertussis because the initial DTaP vaccine wears off over time. Even if your child received DTaP as a young child they are still required to get the Tdap booster before starting school this fall. The best place for children to get a Tdap booster is from their health care provider. Additionally there are numerous pharmacies and clinics throughout the county where Tdap vaccination is being offered. Beat Your Kids Summer Boredom with a New Hobby!

The end of the school year has arrived, and it usually only takes about one day before all parents hear those dreaded two words from their kids Im bored! Of course there are the usual summer activities of camp, swimming, playing outside or staying up late, but what about doing something different this summer? Help your child develop a hobby. Now this may sound easy, but to truly discover a hobby that your child may enjoy could take some time. I am not talking about the easy fallbacks of video games or watching TV that many kids will claim is their hobby. According to Wikipedia, a hobby is dened as an activity done regularly in ones leisure time for pleasure. Who has more leisure time than a kid who is off for three months? So the big question is, What hobby can my child enjoy doing regularly for the summer that wont cost me a fortune? This may vary according to your childs age, so naturally the older child will have a longer attention span and can devote more time to their hobby. A younger child may lose interest after a while, but can be encouraged to return to their hobby daily for shorter periods of time. Here are some suggestions for fun hobbies for kids and parents alike! If you can pick a hobby that you and your child both enjoy, then doing it together will be twice as fun. 1. ReadingFor the child who loves to read, get them started in a fun series. If you are a parent who also enjoys reading, then you could read the same series as your child and talk about the characters and plot together. I have started the series 39 Clues, which is enjoyable for me as an adult reader but is also a series that my son can read. Another bonus is that you can check out your books at the Oroville library or request that they be delivered from the other branches. I also like to download the audio versions for my MP3 to listen to while walking or working out. 2. Collectingthis can be lots of fun! Have your child start a collection. Do they like interesting rocks? How about stamps? Maybe old toys or action gures? Some fun collections in my family are PEZ containers, interesting rocks and gems, and seashells. Once your child decides what they want to collect, you can hunt for those items together and display them in a special spot in their room. Collections dont have to cost a lot of money and could even be free. Use the internet to research interesting facts about your collection such as the history of the item or where it may be located. 3. Arthow about developing your childs natural artistic talent? Drawing, painting, sculpting, sewing, or knitting? The list of possibilities is endless, and supplies can be low cost as well. Check out books or go online to nd how tos for almost any artistic hobby. You can follow step by step instructional videos that make learning how to paint fun and easy. Establish a mini artists studio for your child so they can create their masterpieces. 4. Moviesmy daughter loves to collect movies and display them on her shelf. It is so easy to rent just about any movie through Blockbuster or Netix. For a small monthly fee you can exchange movies left and right for the month. I like to come up with movies that I saw as a child for my kids to watch with me. Every night can be a movie night with no school to get up for in the morning. Hobbies may change as your child grows and develops new interests. But whatever hobby your child decides to take on this summer, it should be fun. A hobby should make you happy and excited while you are doing it. Who knows? The hobby your child starts this summer could last a lifetime!
