Tri County Area Schools to seek
bids for non-instructional services
In a move aimed at saving District
funds, Tri County Area Schools is re-
questing proposals from area frms for
transportation and custodial services.
The request provides companies, as well
as the unions presently performing the
services, with an opportunity to bid on
school services that have traditionally
been handled in-house.
Based upon the experience of other
districts, subcontracting support services
may provide signifcant savings, said
Superintendent, James Scholten. We
would be remiss to overlook any option
in light of the substantial funding cuts
within the state budget just adopted. Any
savings that we have can be invested in
our core mission of educating students.
We may also be eligible for additional per
pupil funding and we cannot overlook an
opportunity to increase our revenues.
While we want to work with the
unions and the employees currently pro-
viding the services to fnd ways to im-
prove productivity and cost savings, it
can be diffcult to compete cost-wise with
frms that have a specifc service area as
their core mission, said Scholten.
Declining revenues, soaring insur-
ance and retirement costs, coupled with
unfunded state and federal mandates for
schools, have led area districts to a point
where all options are being considered.
With the recent school budget cuts, dis-
trict offcials noted that there must be
an assumption that the legislation will
not increase support for schools in the
near future. No later than the upcoming
school year, the district will need to com-
ply with specifc tasks to receive one-time
$100 per pupil incentive revenue.
One of the tasks is to seek bids for
non-instructional services. Also, since
new revenues within the School Aid fund
have been reallocated to balance the
states budget, we have to assume that

and zoning administrator for Ensley township. Sar-
ah is currently working some as a home health aide.
I am looking forward to working with the CMH as
I fnd it very interesting, but also feel I have a lot to
learn!!

Pine Grove hosting
summer concert
Pine Grove Community Church is ex-
cited to welcome Doug Anderson of Ernie
Haase and Signature Sound on Sunday,
July 3 at 6 p.m. for the second in the 2011
Summer Concert Series under The Big
Tent. No tickets are necessary. A free will
offering will be received to support the 2011
Summer Concert Series of Pine Grove.
Basketball fans who watched Doug An-
derson play for Lapel High School in the
late-1980s probably had no idea what his
post high school ambition really was.
Most probably assumed that the all-
county, all-state player, longed to become a
college and NBA star. Little did they know
that this standout athlete, who went on to
play for Purdue University, actually aspired
to become a full-time Gospel singer.
Of course, those who knew Doug best
knew he as a product of a singing family
and that this frst love, indeed, was music.
No one knew this more than Doug, himself,
who believed with all his heart that God
would one day allow him to lie his dream of
becoming a full-time quartet member.
That dream became a reality when Doug
joined a quartet know as Lighthouse. His
membership with Lighthouse led to a meet-
ing with Ernie Haase when Lighthouse sang
with Dougs favorite quartet, the Cathedrals.
Ernie was singing with the Cathedrals,
Doug recalls, and we developed a pretty
good friendship. We had a mutual love for
quartet music and basketball. Knowing one
day that the Cathedrals would retire, Ernie
told me if he ever started a group, he would
call me. A few years ago he did.
A small town boy at heart, Doug is
thankful his career as a member of Signa-
ture Sound still allows him to live in his
hometown of Lapel, IN. He and his wife,
Michele, who were high school sweethearts,
married in August of 1998. Michele shares
Dougs love for sports, often calling him
with scores and play-by-play updates when
Doug is unable to watch a game due to his
travels.
The couple has two beautiful daugh-
ters, Isabel and Emma, who already show
promise of having the same love for athlet-
ics as their parents. Both enjoy watching
and playing a variety of sports with their
parents. Family time is so precious, Doug
says with a smile. We spend every possible
moment together.
Come and hear Doug in concert at
Pine Grove Church on Sunday. July 3. The
church is located at 8775 E. 88th St in How-
ard City. For information call (231) 937-

As a friend of Jerry Deschaine,
who is also a member of the board,
Ralph became involved with the
Empowerment Network in Fre-
mont, a drop-in center for those
who have a mental illness. Once
a month, May through August,
Ralph takes members fshing. In
August he combines the fshing
outing with a picnic, providing the
burgers and all the trimmings. The
Empowerment Network members
always look forward to summer
outings and a picnic with Ralph.
The generous donation of his time
is greatly appreciated.
The Board of Directors held
the annual election of offcers at
the May 12, 2011, meeting. Mike
Hamm was unanimously voted as
chair, Mary Anderson is vice chair,
Adele Hansen is now treasurer,
and Al Steil is the new secretary.
The new board members will
bring new eyes and ideas to very
important topics as the country
moves toward health care reform.
The input and direction of the en-

the continued growth and survival
of NCMH services in this county.
Their service to the county and its

Ruby Pearl Morris
She was born on April 20, 1913 in
North Liberty, Indiana. She had sev-
eral brothers and sisters and grew up
on a big farm.
She married Jack Martin Guelzo
and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Jack worked for American Box Board
and Ruby worked at a factory that
made locks. They had four boys; Jack,
Jim, Jan and Jene and one precious
daughter, Jerrie, who was the middle
child. They were The Guelzo family
and very happy.
during those years, Ruby be-
longed to a church and helped with
many school functions, she had many
friends. She loved bowling and did that
for many years.
Jack passed away. It was at that
time that Ruby made the quilt that is
on display, all by hand. She collected
double-knit fabrics from all her friends
and designed each fower carefully,
cutting and stitching whenever she
had time. She was working in a nursing
home, met a gentleman in florida, fell
in love and married Bob Swimburne.
They were married 15 years. When
he passed away three years ago, Jer-
rie brought Ruby to Metron of Cedar
Springs where she has received loving
care. Ruby is 98 this year (2011).
Jerrie wanted to surprise her mom
with a completed quilt and searched
for someone who would tackle the task.
Debbie Castles Sew Happy Group from
Heritage united Methodist Church
took on the challenge and completed
it, backing it with double-knit fabric,
hand tying and binding it.
Jerrie was the only girl and was
quite spoiled, she admits, and she
loved it~
On Friday, May 27, Belva
Bouwsma and Sandra West-
gate, members of the Whis-
pering Pines and Prairie
Chapter, National Society of
daughters of the American
Revolution, held a veterans
appreciation day in front of
Wal-Mart in Fremont. They
handed out thank you cards
to veterans and families of
veterans to thank them for
their service and sacrifces.
They had a display of the
Wreaths Across America pro-
gram and took donations for
Christmas wreaths that will
be placed on veterans graves
at the Grand Rapids Veterans
Cemetery in December.
The Wreaths Across
America program began in
1992 when Mr. Morill Wo-
recester of Maine, placed
5,000 wreaths on veterans
graves at Arlington National
Cemetery in Washington
D.C. Since then the project
has grown. Last december
over 200,000 wreaths were
placed on veterans graves
across the country and over-
seas. Mr. Worecester has a
goal of placing wreaths on
every veterans grave around
the country This year he has
permission to place a wreath
on every soldiers grave in Ar-
lington National Cemetery.
Anyone wishing to purchase a
wreath for this worthy cause,
can go to their website and
make a donation. Also any-
one who wishes to purchase a
wreath for the Grand Rapids
Veterans Cemetery can con-
tact Sandra Westgate at (231)

Special THANKS to Mrs. McKeever
and her second grade class at Mac-
Naughton Elementary School for mak-
ing artwork to hang on the walls of the
temporary south entrance to Droski In-
surance Agency!
Mrs McKeevers second grade class
created two large pieces of artwork with
their handprints creating fowers, but-
terfies and birds.
The students, along with Julie Proc-
tor, customer service representative at
Droski Insurance Agency, Inc and Mrs.
McKeever are pictured holding their art-
work. Feel free to stop in and view the
artwork at the agency. The entrance is
located at the south end of the build-
ing and will be accessible throughout
the Howard City downtown Streetscape
Project.
THANK YOU, Mrs. McKeever, and
your class for making our temporary en-
trance bright and cheerful. We truly ap-
preciate it!
Remember all downtown businesses
are open during construction. We appre-
ciate your support.

next year will be as uncertain as
2011 has turned out to be, said
Tamera Powers, the districts Di-
rector of Finance. Next year, the
state may mandate subcontract-
ing or penalize districts that have
not sought such savings.
The Board of Education at Tri
County Area Schools expect to
examine the potential cost-sav-
ings, evaluate companies, and re-
view work responsibilities to en-
sure that contracting with private
vendors allows for a continued
high standard of quality at each
level of service. Offcials with the
district expressed hope that the
union would provide a competi-
tive bid. At the same time, off-
cials noted that private vendors
often hire local people and pro-
vide quality services at greatly
reduced costs.
While expressing unhappiness
with the K-12 budget cuts just
adopted, Mr. Scholten stressed
the importance of maintaining
high educational standards, Tri
County Area Schools is commit-
ted to enhancing student learn-
ing as our core mission in every
classroom every day.

Youre the best - you can do
it all. You deserve a promo-
tion. Youre smart, you do ev-
erything youre asked to. You
know all the answers. Youve
got everything under control.
Your job gets done, and very
well, youd add. Youre pretty
sure that youre the best person
doing your job, in fact, prob-
ably no-one else in your de-
partment could do your job as
well as you do. So whats the
hold-up? Why is everyone get-
ting promoted but you?
No pucks need apply.
Businesses will be only as good
as the combined successes of
their employees. Very success-
ful companies have extraordi-
nary employee teams. Teams
are highly efcient, members
are dependent on each other.
No member acts superior to
others. Everyone does more
than what is asked. Teammates
refuse to take individual credit,
instead insisting that their suc-
cess is a joint effort. Partly its
the self-fullling prophecy. If
you tell someone that theyre
such-and-such, whether thats
good or bad, then that such-
and-such is more likely to
become true. So if you give
your teammates the credit,
you increase the likelihood
they will actually step up and
perform better next time, to be
more creditworthy. If you can
get them to happily perform
better, you give your team the
winning edge.
If you havent been promot-
ed, it could be because you
havent shown how to be part
of a team. It could be youve
been acting like the puck, free-
wheeling, independent, and
overcondent. From your rst
day on the job your employer
has been looking at your ability
to play the team game. Could
you be the next goalie? Goal-
ies take teams to the playoffs.
Being a team player.
Knowing a lot is good. But dont
pat yourself on the back. Share
the credit, no matter how little
someone else contributed. Ex-
pressing your opinion is good.
But practice a positive attitude.
Give a positive way to x that
problem, dont just point it out.
If making coffee isnt your job,
make the coffee. Volunteer to
help someone for no extra pay.
Support your team members.
Dont call in sick (unless you
are really sick). That puts a
strain on workers who pick up
your slack. Get to work early
every day. Maybe a night shift
guy can go home a little ear-
lier then very considerate of
you. Be unbiased. Make no
judgments about others. Dont
listen to rumors and OMG!
dont spread them. Give ev-
eryone the benet of the doubt
and dont take sides. Treat
your mates equally. No favor-
ites. And smile a lot!
Game Rules Change.
When a game plan, a company
policy, the way things have
always been done, changes,
dont complain. Give it your
best try. After a couple of
weeks, make a suggestion to
improve it. One. Respect your
co-workers even when you
cant believe theyre right
believe that theyre trying their
best. Represent your company
with dignity. Be its biggest fan.
Be the goalie. And always re-
member that if you think you
cant be replaced, you can, and
will be.

I Am Too Old
This statement is a self-fullling prophecy and I hear it all the time. Dr. Bennett used to say, It is not your age, it is your
mileage. We are programmed by our culture that when we get old we are worthless. People dream of the day they can
retire and do nothing. For a while that works, but then they get bored. Many begin to have illnesses and health issues. We
need to stay busy and productive. We may not want to continue in our current occupation, but then we should to do
something different that we enjoy.
There are many examples of people who not only continued to work into their seventies and eighties, but who started
new careers at those ages. Colonel Sanders started KFC after he turned 65 and was active in business into his late 80s. Dr.
Fields, over 80, from Saginaw, is a neurosurgeon and still works doing complicated surgeries. Amelia Barr was fty-three
before she wrote a book. After that she wrote over eighty, all of which had a large circulation. Billy Graham, evangelist, is
still active in his ministry in his 90s. Many past Presidents and members of congress, in their 70s and 80s, continue to be
productive in their positions. Many people work and volunteer in the older years.
And why not? These people in their over 60 years have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can be highly
benecial to the younger folks in the work force. Stop thinking of yourself as old and washed up. Think of yourself as a
seasoned veteran with lots of knowledge, experience and understanding. If you are younger, know that you will live and
work until you are ninety. Take care of your body as if you know that it will some day be a prized antique.
Whenever you hear yourself say, I am too old, or at my age, or some other derogatory statement about age, please,
stop and think. Is that really true or are you just following the negative programming from the media, the government, and
your family?
But some people are literally worn out in their forties and fties. That is mostly from the effects of toxins, high carbohydrate
diets, lack of exercise, and injuries. These things are unfortunate, but in most cases are totally
preventable. Do your best to take no medication unless absolutely necessary. By denition, they are
all toxic. Sometimes we have to take meds, but remember natural substances cannot be patented
as prescription medicine, so by law they are all foreign to our bodies and are potentially toxic. Long
term use of these chemicals can cause us to age prematurely just like other toxic substances such as
tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and acidic foods.
Learn to manage your stress because that is a huge factor as far as physical aging. Meditation is a
fabulous way to reverse stress and improve your body from the inside out. Most of all monitor your
self talk. If you hear yourself talking about age and getting old or dying, stop right there and cancel
that thought. See yourself as vibrant and active no matter what your age. Eventually our bodies will
fail, but we should die around the age of 100 in perfect health and this is very possible if we plan for
it.

AM? FM? HD? Satellite? CD? MP3?
Your customers have lots of choices when deciding
what to listen to. When you need to reach those
customers you could choose radio. But should you
choose AM, FM, HD, or Satellite? Ten which format
should you choose: Adult Contemporary, Smooth
Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Country, Classical, News, Talk,
Urban, Oldies, Latin, Religious, or Sports? Once
youve chosen the medium and the format youll
need to select the right stations. How many stations
do you listen to? Do your customers listen to the
same ones? Do you need a 30 or 60 second spot?
Finally, which daypart should you advertise on:
morning drive, mid-day, afternoon drive, evening, or
overnight?
If this all seems a bit complicated there is an
alternative. Your free community paper reaches the
most households in our area and ofers two simple
options: size and color. You choose the size and color
options that work for your budget. Its that simple.
Call us today to discuss those two options with a
professional advertising consultant. Well handle
everything. Ten you can sit back and listen to your
iPod without any distractions.
