Local Anything Goes actor taking Broadway show to the small screen

Although Daniel Johnson is now appearing on the Broadway stage in the revival of Anything Goes, his Manistee friends and relatives will be glued to their television sets on several occasions in the next week to get a glimpse of the actor/singer/dancer who may have hit the jackpot in his first post-college role. The cast from Anything Goes will perform at the Tony Awards on Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m., and also on Tuesday evening on The Late Show with David Letterman at 11 p.m. In addition to performing on the Tony Awards show, the cast will also find out which of the nine Tony nominations result in awards. The nominations are for best revival of a musical, best actress in a musical (Sutton Foster), best featured actor in a musical (Adam Godley), best direction of a musical (Kathleen Marshall), best choreography (Kathleen Marshall), best scenic design of a musical (Derek McLane), best costume design of a musical (Martin Pakledinaz), best lighting design of a musical (Peter Kaczorowski) and best sound design of a musical (Brian Ronan). Two people who will be seeing if they can catch a glimpse of their son will be Erik and Barbara Johnson. They traveled to New York for the opening of the show and attended an outof-this-world afterglow in the New York harbor aboard the USS Intrepid. Johnson, whose stage name is Daniel J.
The star of the Anything Goes, Sutton Foster, in Blow Gabriel Blow. Edwards, graduated from Pittsburghs Point Park College last May with a degree in musical theater, and after a role in Miss Saigon in Toronto last summer he moved to New York and auditioned for Anything Goes in the fall. Im super excited, Johnson told the News Advocate for a story several months ago. Its a little surreal for me, to be sure. I didnt expect to hit Broadway for at least three years once I moved to New York, so to do it in the first month was pretty shocking. Rehearsals began in January and the show opened in Broadways Stephen Sondheim Theatre in April to favorable reviews. It has already won the following awards five Drama Desk Awards including outstanding revival of a musical, outstanding choreographer of a musical (Kathleen Marshall), outstanding actress in a musical (Sutton Foster), outstanding set design (Derek McLane) and outstanding sound design (Brian Ronan); four Outer Critics Circle Awards including outstanding revival of a musical, outstanding Choreographer of a Musical (Kathleen Marshall), Outstanding Actress in a Musical (Sutton Foster), Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical (Adam Godley); A Drama League Award for distinguished revival of a musical and a Fred and Adele Astaire Award for best female dancer on Broadway (Sutton Foster). Anything Goes was originally scheduled to play through July 31, but the run has been extended to Jan. 8. Cole Porter wrote the music and lyrics for the show that include some of musical theaters most memorable standards Youre the Top, Blow, Gabriel, Blow, Its DeLovely, I Get A Kick Out of You and Anything Goes. Daniel Johnson wont be the only actor from Manistee at the Tony Awards on Monday. Brethren High School graduate James Earl Jones, who got his start at the Ramsdell Theatre in the late 1950s, is scheduled to be one of the award presenters.

We will walk. When we dont want to walk anymore, we will still have to walk. From the border of Wexford and Manistee counties to the lake, we will walk. Youve heard it here first: I will hoof across the entire county. I will carry my beer belly, my creaky knees and arthritic ankles all the way from the Marilla Trailhead down the North Country Trail, hook a right at the Little Manistee River on a to-be-determined course and keep on walking. Were guessing it will take three days to make it across the county with everything we need strapped to our backs. My brother, one of our buddies, my dog, Rudy, and I are planning on making the backpacking trip the weekend of June 25, an experience I will chronicle in the News Advocate. So, the main question Im guessing youre asking yourself is: why? Why walk across the county? Because Ive already driven across the county. Because hiking 12 to 15 miles a day transforms your perspective about your body and your soul. Because walking is closer to the speed of life, the speed of our thoughts. Because, at a certain point, one tires of cheeseburgers, video games, Facebook, music, cars, politics, movies, gin and tonics, conversations, work, combing your hair and ice cream sandwiches. For three days, Ill be far away from all these things. Instead, I will have one goal, one need, to get from point A to point B. All I will have to do is follow the trail. The fellas and I will also get to experience the beauty of our county in its fullest, not just in little snippets.

Stopping at a scenic pull-off in your Hummer that is dragging a motor home is like looking in the store window. Being immersed in nature for days at a time is like owning the store. Well start at the Manistee River Trail, hook back up with the North Country Trail at Red Bridge, and hopefully get to Sawdust Hole by the end of the first day to camp. The next day, well go from Sawdust Hole down near the Little Manistee River. From there, well probably have to walk the back-roads west toward the lake. When we were planning the trip, we imagined walking straight to the lake, stripping down to our skivvies and rushing into the water after three shower-less days. But if we get to Stronach Park, Ill be happy. You see, theres been a glitch: getting my aging, once athletic and agile body, into shape. The last time Ive been on a trip kind of like this one was when my brother and I backpacked Isle Royale up in Lake Superior ten years ago. Ten years ago I was a healthy, virile 23 years old. Since then, there have been too many bags of Funyuns and cans of Pabst Blue Ribbons. And, with apologies to my doctor, my lungs and the American Cancer Association, there have also been too many packs of smokes.
So, a month ago, the training began. As far as diet, Ive tried cutting down on the booze, cigarettes and junk food, the holy trinity of guilty pleasures in a guilty age. I needed to start some sort of exercise regime, though. Ive always dismissed jogging as kind of a corny, New Age type of activity. None of my health heroes from the 1950s like Jack LaLanne (who passed away in January at the age of 96) or Charles Atlas seemed like they would be caught dead out in a pair of hundred dollar sneakers running around. An exercise bike costs money. Im too cheap for that. A mountain bike costs even more money. Plus, those dudes are always pedaling around in Spandex. You dont want to see me stuffed into a Spandex suit. Trust me. The shapes would be downright inappropriate. As far as swimming, its still way too cold. So, for the past month, Rudy the Wonder Dog and I have taken to the trails to get into shape. Rudy, a mutt we got from Homeward Bound Animal Shelter here in Manistee County, just turned one and needs to get worn out everyday anyway. He bounds and leaps through the woods. He runs up and down hills with the greatest of ease. Frequently, he has to stop and wait for me, looking at me with an expression that says,Lets go, lets go, lets go. At first, Id be far behind, trudging along, wheezing, cracking and sweating. And that was only a half mile in. I found it was easier with each day trip I did. Last week, I did eight miles up on the Manistee River Trail, where well be starting our journey. The legs burned a little the next day. But I kept walking. The next day I found time for three miles. And Ill keep walking.
The local Elks Clown Band was a popular attraction at Forest and Strawberry festivals. In 1915, the first Homecoming event was held in Manistee. It welcomed former residents back to the city. This event would continue through 1935. The year 1919 brought the close of World War I and the Fifth Annual Fourth of July and Homecoming at Manistee. The patriotic and industrial parade to be held the morning of the Fourth promised to be the best and longest in history, with all returning soldiers marching. The Manistee Iron Works Band was organized in 1929 and was a new attraction for the

be, except the beef he eats primarily comes out of drive-thru window along with lots of fat that usually is dripping out of the wrapper. The beef they are talking about in this story is extra lean beef that contains iron which is a mineral that improves memory, alertness, and attention span. When I told that to my friend there eyes kind of glazed over and they responded with what were your saying? Enough said on the type of beef he is eating. The list said it also good to eat chicken, which is a regular in my diet. Chicken is high in tyrosine, which helps in the production of dopamine, eninephrine and noreinephrine that encourage alertness. Those who are still awake and reading those long boring words are following the same pattern in eating plenty of chicken. Those who dozed off in mid-sentence should invite the Colonel over for a
baked lunch date real soon. Another thing on the list is beets, which I can honestly say have successfully avoided my dinner plate for the bulk of life. I know that isnt a good thing, but there havent been many restaurants that I have gone into that include beets on the menu, nor are there many people lined up complaining about it. According to this article, beets contain something called phenylalanine, which I have no idea what it does. Of course, if I ate my beets the odds are good I would know what phenylanine does because it improves brain function. Of course sometimes ignorance is bliss. Likewise that list also includes edamame and legumes, which help improve signals from one brain cell to another and helps to maintain stable levels of energy to improve concentration. Right now I am sure many of you are saying what are edamame and legumes? Edamame is soybeans while legumes are beans, peas and things of that nature. See, and you laughed at me about the beets, but I eat my edamame and
legumes. However, the blood coarsing through these veins has to be toxin free like spring water Ok bad example with all the things we are dumping into our spring water these days. The reason I say that is because it said if you eat broccoli, carrots, blueberries and citrus fruits it will take care of removing toxins. Those are some foods that I graze on like a bunny in a garden or a grizzly bear in his favorite berry patch so I should be good in that area. One of the things on the list kind of puzzled me and that was the hot chilies that it said stimulates circulation, aids digestion, opens your nasal passages and sends a feeling of euphoria straight to your brain. I can buy the opens your nasal passages and stimulates circulation. Once you eat hot chilies, the last thing you want to do is lay or sit down for fear of getting the worst possible case of indigestion, so I am sure the constant movement helps your circulation. However, the part about aiding digestion I find a little hard to swallow kind of like red hot chil-
ies. Maybe it aids digestion because you usually have to wash them down with a half a bottle of antacid. Another one that surprised me when it appeared on the list was eggs. It said that eating eggs will improve your memory and I am sure that when most people start poaching, frying, scrambling and boiling the thing they will remember first is their doctor saying cut back on your eggs because your cholesterol is on the rise. However, my memory should be in pretty good shape because it said if you eat plenty of romaine lettuce and spinach it will keep it in good shape. Of course that is when I remember to buy more after my refrigerator gets empty, so you see it doesnt always work to perfecton. So it appears that if you want to stay alert well
into your senior years the best thing to do is to just start eating like there is no tomorrow. Of course the weight you gain will most likely kill you but you will go out with a mind that is sharp as a tack. Homecoming that year, when it played for a dance that was held on a parking lot at Maple and Water Streets. A window display features the band and the uniform of David Kliber, a cornet player. The Manistee National Forest Festival, which was to celebrate the beginning and growth of the new Manistee Forest, became a reality in 1936, with much assistance from the recently established National Youth Administration, which had as its first project the Festivals Indian Village that featured local Native Americans. There will be in the exhibit photos of the Indian Village as well as the National Forest project; Forest Festival parades; and Robert Wadlow, the worlds tallest man, who died in Manistee while here to appear in the 1940 Forest Festival. Many items recalling this event in the early years also will be displayed. The Forest Festivals continued through 1941. Then in 1949, after World War II and no full-fledged festivals for eight years, Manistee held a Sports Festival, which was scheduled for mid-July. A special coin was made to commemorate this event. After two summers of sports, the Forest Festival reappeared in 1951, back by popular demand. This event remained Manistees prime event until 1966, when the National Strawberry Festival, honoring the local enterprise of strawberry growing, came to town. A Strawberry Festival had been held in Copemish as early as 1958. With new features added to old favorites, there was a carnival and plenty of strawberries and related events. Many items recalling this event have been loaned for display by former festival queens, who will appear at the July 2 dessert, Meet the Festival Queens. With Manistees celebration of the National Bicentennial in 1976 came the last Strawberry Festival, for in 1977 it was back to the Forest Festival once more, a summer event that has held
