She was the daughter of a well-known sculptor, Auguste Dumon, and showed great musical ability from an early age. When she was fifteen, she began to study composition and orchestration with Anton Reicha at the Paris Conservatoire. She married Aristide Farrenc in 1821 and her fame as a composer and pianist gradually spread through Western Europe. She was appointed Professor of Piano at the Paris Conservatoire in 1842, and she remained in that post for 30 years. She died in Paris on 15th September, 1875. Although she composed three symphonies and a piano concerto, Louise Farrenc was chiefly known for her chamber works, of which the present Trio is an example. It was published by the composer in 1861, and the title-page reads as follows: “A Monsieur Adolphe Leroy | TRIO | pour | Piano, Clarinette ou Violon | et | Violoncelle | composé par | L. FARRENC | Professeur de Piano au Conservatoire de Paris | op. 44 | Prix: 20F | PARIS, chez V'AUTEUR, 10, rue Taitbout | et chez les Editeurs de Musique | Propé. de Auteur | (4.F122)”. Mai 1804 in Paris geboren. Sie war die Tochter von Auguste Dumon, einem bekannten Bildhauer, und zeigte schon frih ihre groBe mu- sikalische Begabung. Im Alter von 15 Jahren begann sie am Pariser Conservatoire bei ‘Anton Reicha mit dem Studium der Komposition und Instrumentation. 1821 heiratete sie Aristide Farrenc, und ihr Ruf als Komponistin und Pianistin verbreitete sich allmiblich in Westeuropa. 1842 erhielt sie eine Klavierprofessur am Pariser Conservatoire — in dieser Position war sie 30 Jahre lang tatig. Louise Farrenc starb in Paris am 15. Septem- ber 1875. Obwoh! Louise Farrene drei Symphonien und ein Klavierkonzert komponierte, wurde sie vor allem durch ihre kammermusikalischen Werke bekannt, unter denen sich das vorlie- gende Trio befindet.
