For the assignment FIK 3042 - ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION 2, assignment 3, I have chosen to interview the Prof. Dr.

Norzulaani Binti Khalid. I chose her to be

interviewed because I already know her since I was studying at the Institut Bahasa Melayu, Malaysia (IBMM), which is located near to the University the Malaya head

(UM). Prof. Dr. Norzulaani Binti Khalid is of the general areas in 4,

a lecturer and also Plant 2011, which

Biotechnology. Here is my is located at her residence

interview session with her on June in Petaling Jaya.

Me : AssalamualaikumFor the introduction, can you introduce briefly about yourself? Prof : WaalaikumussalamIm Norzulaani Binti Khalid. Im married an already have 3 sons. Now. Im work at University Malaya as a Head of Faculty of Science in Biology. Me : Can you tell me some information about your family? Prof : My fathers name is Khalid Bin Hashim and my mother, Salbiah binti Maarof. I have a brother, Norizan Bin Khalid. We are from Melaka, but my father work as a police in Kelantan, so I had studied in Kelantan. My husband, Abd. Razak Abu Bakar, also from Melaka. My eldest son, Irfan Hilmi, 17 years old, Iqbal Hakim, 14 years old and Izzat Hanafi, 11 years old.

Me : What about your academic? Can you give me some information about that? Prof : My primary school is Sek Ren Zainab, Kota Bahru, and Masjid Tanah

Inggeris School, Melaka. Then, I was offered to further my studied At Tunku Kurshiah College, Seremban. After graduated at the College of Tengku Kurshiah, I further my study at University Malaya in Bachelor of Botanical. Thank God I was getting an offer again to further my study to the highest level, PhD at University of Nottingham, UK in Plant Biotechnology.

Me : Well, congratulations for you. So, who are the main person in your life which always be by your side until you become a successful person like nowadays? Prof : Thank you. To get to this point I've been getting support from my parents and my brother. The main point which makes me work hard in my life is I want to make my family happy and proud of me.

Me : Have u join non-government organization or any organization which related to your profession? Prof : I have joined INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF HORTICULTURE SCIENCE, Member, 2008, (International) and International In Vitro Society, Member, 1996-1998, (National) Me : Can you tell me a bit about the specifications of your field? Prof : Based on my profession, my main field is Plant Biotechnology. My specific project is improvement of plant breeding for agriculture, and discovery about drugs in pharmacy. . (Plant biotechnology, tissue culture, micro propagation, transgenic research).

Me : Can you tell me about your largest contribution in the profession that you join now? Prof : In the field of plant biotechnology, tissue the production culture technology has of plant seedlings to the

been developed. This

technology involves

field of agriculture. The seeds of this plant are come from the part of the plant which was grown up in special formula (the normal way is the use of seeds, cuttings, tuber etc). This technology (formulas and methods) was developed as a result of our research and have been transferred to industry for some ornamental as the Malaysian plants such as

banana, pineapple, ginger and technology used by some industries such

plants. Our Agrifoods Corp. (a

subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional), Johor Biotech etc.

Me : Have you published any books or Academic Journals? Can u give me some explanation about that? Prof : Of course I have. My best book was published on 2005 Norzulaani K., Halijah Ibrahim and Rofina Yasmin Othman (2005). Technology Transfer Opportunities for Plant Biotechnology - incorporating the PBIU tissue culture catalogue. Cebar, University of Malaya. 48pp (ISBN 983-100-346-2)dan tahun 2008 iaitu Norzulaani, K. & Sujaidi, D. 2009. Kehebatan Pisang. Fakulti Sains, Universiti Malaya. 113pp (ISBN 978-9675148-17- 0) . Me : Does it was published in mass media such as newspaper, radio, television or any popular magazine? Prof : Certainly there. The most recent one last year, the

magazine Better Crop, MalaysianBusiness, page 9. While in 2006 the Utusan Malaysia newspaper titled Norzulaani Khalid and University Malaya bring Biotechnology t

school, page 18, and Norzulaani Khalid in an interview with Selamat Pagi Malaysia in Radio Television Malaysia entitled "Biotechnology of Plant Tissue Culture, University of Malaya, KualaLumpur, Malaysia.

Me : Have u join any consultation project or consultancy? Prof : There are some consultation project that I have ever participated, such as : Contract Research to Produce Direct Regeneration of Banana variety Berangan, Mas and Tanduk; and Staff Training, Consultant, 2007-2008, Johor Plant Tech. Sdn. Bhd.

Contract Research in Developing Cell Suspension Tissue Culture Technology for Maspine Pineapple, Consultant, 2008-2010, Malaysian AgriFood Corporation Berhad

Plant Cell Cultures Technology for BeST-STCA Programme, Consultant, 2011-2011, Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation.

Me : How about the awards that u have won and what is the highest achievement that you have got? Prof : The highest award I ever won at the international level is certainly a Bronze medalist-Geneva 33rd International Exhibition of New Technologies and Products, Geneva, Switzerland, Geneva 2005, BEST Poster Award, International Congress on Banana, 2004, Silver and Bronze, 5th International Invention and Innovation Industrial Design & Technology Exhibition 2004, CICHE Grant, British Council, 2002 and many others. Me : Whats your hope in this field and any other future goals that are not achieved? Prof : My dream is to popularize this the tissue culture technology for production technology should

of quality seeds and develop

to other

various plants. This

be streamlined so that the plants seed price can be cheaper than the current market. It is important because at the moment the seed production industry in Malaysia is Me : So, whats your advice to the students who wish to get involved in this area? Prof : Biology is fundamental to the field of plant biotechnology. But the science subjects should not have boundaries to make innovative students. Apart from the knowledge of

plants, students should master in chemistry subjects to be involved in research on 'drugs' / medicine from plants. Physics is also important for the innovation of fundamental to all research to ensure that data is valid or not. Students of science should have feeling in nature world, always be asked the nature of love, wonder and think about what is

happening around them and problems and solutions if anything happens related to their profession.

In whatever we do in life, it is important to internalize what we are doing. As an example, as a lecturer or trainer, we must earnest and embraces teaching, research and administration Thank you so much and all the best. Me : thank you so much for spending some time to be interviewed. Hopefully you will always eager to help students who are interested in this plant biotechnology. Prof : Thank you also coz willing to interview me. At least, it can expose to the general public outside about the plant biotechnology.
