The Types of Curriculum (The Advantages and Disadvantages)


Separated Subject Curriculum In this curriculum each subject is shown separately, and there is no relationship between one subject to other subjects. The advantages: a. The learning material is presented in a logical and systematic, because every material has been prepared and explained in a systematic and logical to follow the proper sequence, from easy to difficult, from simple to complex. Therefore it can make the student s learning process easier. b. The organization of curriculum is simple and easy to be planned and implemented. Because the subjects are presented separately, so the preparation of Curriculum also more easily, without having to link to other lessons. c. The curriculum is easily evaluated to obtain the data needed to be revised as necessary. Because the Curriculum is primarily intended to convey some knowledge then it can easily know the results by performing the measurement in the form of the test.

The disadvantages: a. This curriculum provides a separate subject and it does not pay attention to the social problems faced by the children in their everyday lives. In practice, this curriculum aims to present the material contained in the textbooks determined. but, that material is often not related to the problems faced by the children in their lives. In addition, learning materials especially based on the textbook, so that, many problems faced by children in their lives, has no place in the curriculum.

b. This curriculum tends to be static and outdated. Teaching materials in the curriculum was mainly based on knowledge that has been listed in the book. Sometimes a book is used from year to year without any changes and adjustments to dynamic state and development of society. That is why learning at school are often out of date. c. The purpose of this curriculum is very limited because it only focuses on the intellectual development and less attention to other factors such as emotional and social development.

Correlated Curriculum This curriculum was developed based on the connectedness between different subjects, by the assumption that it is impossible to discuss a subject without offending other subjects. The advantages: a. There is a correlation between the various subjects that can sustain the experience and knowledge of learners since they do not accept it separately. b. The correlation between different subjects, enable learners to apply their knowledge and experience in functional. This is because they can take advantage of knowledge from different subject areas to solve various problems faced. c. The understanding of students is deeper, because they get the explanation from various subjects.

The disadvantages: a. The curriculum of this form is essentially still a subject centered and do not use teaching materials that are directly related to the needs and interests of students and also to the problems faced by the students in their daily lives. b. By combining multiple subjects into a single unit with a broader scope, does not provide a systematic and in-depth knowledge to students. In addition, this curriculum also takes a lot of time to explore the material.

Integrated Curriculum Integrated the curriculum is the curriculum that the material is provided in an integrated manner. The advantages: a. Everything that is learned in the unit closely related to each other, not just the facts separately. b. In accordance with new theory based on experience. c. It allows closer relations between schools and communities.

The disadvantages: a. Does not have a logical and systematically organization. b. The teachers are generally not prepared to run the curriculum in the form of units. c. Implementation of the curriculum units are in need of time, equipment, facilities, and adequate infrastructure. d. Not having a clear standard of learning outcomes, so it is difficult to measure the ability of children nationally.
