BlueStacks Multi-OS (MOS) vs Dual Boot

Dual Boot
Device is shipped with two partitions each containing a different Operating System For purposes of this discussion we will assume that the two OS are Windows & Android At boot time user can decide which OS to use and needs to reboot to use different OS

Definition

Dual OS
Device can ship with one or two partitions. In one partition case the second OS is just like ordinary file User can switch easily between applications from one OS to another. Applications from both can be running at the same time

Other

Base OS can be windows, android, chrome or linux variant

For this presentation we will compare Dual-Boot with MOS in 2-os configuration Note on more powerful machines BlueStacks MOS can support more than 2 OS simultaneously

BlueStacks Dual OS

Dual Boot 1-3 minutes

Comparison: Android via Dual Boot vs Dual OS

Switch Time

< 1 sec

Data Sharing

Can share Windows Data Android; my pictures; documents; files;

Data Sharing is difficult and needs licensing of NTFS. If suspend resume like in HyperSpace then data on disk may be inconsistent No support for flash currently
Need to license additional codecs for Android Very hard to support 3rd party devices. Need to write additional device drivers

Flash
Codecs 3rd party devices

Flash playing inside android is supported

No additional codecs are needed for Android 3rd party devices like USB camera, printers, scanner can be supported easily in Android

Application Compatibility

Greatly enhanced Only 30-40% of Android application compatibility. 70- applications can work 80% of Android applications can work

BlueStacks Dual OS

Dual Boot Very time consuming to upgrade Android version as it has to be ported to h/w. Also need to wait for Intel to provide BSP. Not supported

Comparison: Android via Dual Boot vs Dual OS

Upgrade Android Version

Very easy to upgrade Android version

Enterprise Support

Android applications can be seamlessly managed by Systems Center or Citrix Receiver Can be dynamically adjusted based on usage. No need to waste expensive SSD. Android only occupy 180MB on disk If touch device is supported in windows with palm rejection etc. It is easily supportable in Android Windows File System can be encrypted

Hard Disk Size

Need to pre-partition the hard disk. Fixed partition leads to waste of SSD storage. More expensive. Very difficult to support as needs new device drivers

Touch Support for Pen

Support for Encrypted File System

Cant share data etc if the windows partition is encrypted

BlueStacks Dual OS

Dual Boot Docked screen is same as tablet

Comparison: Android via Dual Boot vs Dual OS

Dual Dock

Tablet can show android, while docked screen can have windows

Performance

User cant make out perceptible difference. Very similar performance to native after fine tuning for device. Same battery life as running windows

Native performance
