VAS theory

VMS = Voicemail is an increasingly used system for storing telephone messages for a large group people. Voice mail is a very important system for busy individuals who cannot collect their calls every time. The advent of voicemail came about due to the need of corporates and bigger companies to have an economical and simple method to store telephone messages for their employees. The simple answering machines were not viable because that would need one answering machine per telephone. When a person calls another on their cellphone, and if the dialed person is busy, the voice mail message service is activated. The caller can then store their voicemail message, in what is called a 'voice mail inbox'. Voice mail services have the ability to make a call to a telephone or a cellphone to inform the user that they have a 'voicemail message'. The dialed person can then retrieve these messages from their inbox at a later time, by clearing some simple, pre-determined security procedures, commonly a password. Voicemail systems (VMS) may be available with residential phone networks, however they are a standard network feature with most cellular networks. Today, voice mail systems are most commonly associated with office telephone networks and Private Branch Exchanges. Voice mail uses a telephone machine for its user interface, and is connected to a central computer system. Voice mail systems can answer many phones at the same time. They also enable users to forward messages to another voice mailbox. Further, voice mail stores incoming voice messages in private and personalized mailboxes, which are generally associated with the user's phone number. Voice mail services also allows its users to forward the received messages to another voice mailbox. Voice mail services also allow the user to send messages to one or more voice mailboxes. Like answering machines, voice mail services allow the use to greet the caller with a personalized message. It also allows the user to add a voice introduction to a forwarded message. It also allows the user to play different greeting messages to different callers. This can be done by simply feeding and registering the said numbers into the voice mail inbox. Voicemail systems consist of a central processing unit (CPU), the software and a program. The program gives the look and feel to the voicemail system. It is this software that consists the various prompts and commands that make up the crux of the voice mail system. Voice mail systems also consists of disk controllers and many disks to store the messages in. Voicemail systems also have system disks which contain data pertaining to the entire working of the system, including pointers to each of the messages that are stored on the disk drives. Voice mail messaging systems may be seen as a 'technical toy' by some, but it has been a boon for corporates. Voice mail messaging single-handedly solved the communication problems in the corporate

world. Previously, many messages were lost due to the messages being stored either manually. A few years ago, there was a huge loss of productivity because of individuals not being able to contact individuals. This was mainly because of the decrease of the ratio of secretaries to employees. Some studies showed that almost one in four phone calls did not require a conversation and was simply a message of either work done, or work about to start. Voice mail enables people to leave detailed and long secure messages across the world. Voice mail also systemized the flow of communications in corporates as well as saved a lot of money in terms of communication and basically getting the job done. Separate surveys have noted that companies can save up to a thousand dollars per employee per year with the use of voice mail messaging systems.

Voice Mail Service (VMS)

Login Page Introduction http://ntc.net.np/PSTN/pstn_vmsDetails.php#gotop Voice mailbox service (VMS) is a kind of value added telecom service based on intelligent network platform. It can replace the answering machine adding more interactive service features. In this system, customers do not need to add any equipment to their telephone set. This service can be used by dialing access code from any phone. This VMS is also can be used for fax mail. SMSC (Short Message Service Center)

An SMS center (SMSC) is responsible for handling the SMS operations of a wireless network. When an SMS message is sent from a mobile phone, it will reach an SMS center first. The SMS center then forwards the SMS message towards the destination. An SMS message may need to pass through more than one network entity (e.g. SMSC and SMS gateway) before reaching the destination. The main duty of an SMSC is to route SMS messages and regulate the process. If the recipient is unavailable (for example, when the mobile phone is switched off), the SMSC will store the SMS message. It will forward the SMS message when the recipient is available.

Very often an SMSC is dedicated to handle the SMS traffic of one wireless network. A network operator usually manages its own SMSC(s) and locates them inside its wireless network system. However, it is possible for a network operator to use a third-party SMSC that is located outside the wireless network system. You must know the address of the wireless network operator's SMSC in order to use SMS messaging with your mobile phone. Typically an SMSC address is an ordinary phone number in the international format. A mobile phone should have a menu option that can be used to configure the SMSC address. Normally, the SMSC address is pre-set in the SIM card by the wireless network operator, which means you do not need to make any changes to it. http://www.developershome.com/sms/

SMSC Short Message Service Centre

Every Short Message has to pass the SMSC. There are different ways to tranfer the Short Message to the Short Message Service Centre. A Short message can reach the SMSC by GSM modem / module and can be transferred to an email or fax.
Manual reception

Make a call to a manual reception and tell them what you want to sent and to whom. Not very useful in industrial GSM applications.
Automatic answering service

Make a call to an automatic answering service and make a choice from a number of ready made texts. Not popular in industrial applications also.
Typing on the keypad of your GSM phone

Use your own GSM phone with sending abilities and enter a message and send it. Can be useful, if you have to send control commands from somebody to a machine, to change parameters. Most

GSM phone offers the storage of Short Messages so that you can send from memory of the SIM card.
SMS program

Use a computer with a PSTN modem and a special SMS program. Popular for the sending of Short messages to mobile GSM phones. There are a lot of local SMS programs available. A few of them are freeware and others are shareware. In Germany ( and other countries) the GSM operators offers light versions of SMS programs as freeware. If you have a need for software that have more features, then you have to buy it. If you use a local SMS software, then it is in local language and the parameters are set for your GSM operators. The other technical problem are the different hardware interfaces like PSTN modem or Datex P ( X.25) and the different software protocols like TAP and USP on the SMSC. If you have to send only then TAP is OK, but if you have to send and to receive then UCP is the right way. The UCP can send and receive Short Message. The easiest, but not fastest transmit and receive you can reach with a GSM modem. A GSM modem can send / receive a Short Message each 6 to 10 seconds. With a connect based on UCP you can reach 600 messages per minute.
SMS driver

For industrial applications you can not often not use ready SMS software. You have not to think about the protocols, if you buy software drivers from third parties. That can save time and money.
SMS to fax

SMS to fax is available by a lot of GSM operators and by local third parties.
SMS to email

SMS to email is available by the GSM operators and by third parties too.
Email to SMS

Email to SMS is available by the GSM providers and by third parties. A few of them offers that serif free of charge, but with advertising on the end of the message. Such free of charge services do mostly not free of charge for commercial GSM solutions.
SMS to SMS

In the beginning of GSM it was not possible to send an SMS from GSM operator A in Germany to GSM provider B in Germany. A few companies has developed special services to bridge that. They offer sending to foreign German operators. Right now they offer a couple off other specials, that are not supported by the local German operators.

Connect to SMSC
GSM modem

There are different ways to send or to receive a SMS. The simplest with a GSM modem. Unfortunately, a GSM-Modem can process only 6 to 10 SMS per minute. To increase the speed a connect to a communication server with up to 32 GSM modem is neccesary. Then becomes possible with it up to 320 SMS per minute. With this kind of SMS communication none direct connect to SMSC is necessary. Some GSM operators offer no direct connect. Consequently, the communication server with 32 GSM modem is a good alternative.
Direct link to SMSC

Faster and more comfortable is the direct link to the SMSC. With a direct acces you can reach up to 600 SMS per minute. Popular protocols are UCP, SMPP, CIMD2, OIS and TAP. TAP is an old protocol to the send messages to a pager. Causes historically, TAP offers sent of messages from server only. With which hardware the SMSC can be connected is not the same by all the different operators. The exact data must be asked at the GSM operator. The parameters are not equal also. Through the variety, the likelihood of a mistake is very large.
Ready software that helps to connect

For the world wide market, there is a big number of software to ease the direct access to SMSC. The offer is from Freeware, Open Sources up to software which almost all types of the communications masters. With Freeware, there is usually no support. The protocols named above are developed further continually. So constantly changes on the software is necessary. The following graphics shows an example for a software which at many companies in the usage. Many settings of GSM operators already in the default parameters. Further new operators are added by the developer usually free of charge. The functions of the software and service / support is perfect.Whoever nevertheless thinks to save money with own drivers finds the sources of the known protocols in the appendix. There are still students, which must develop drivers itself. A short message service center (SMSC) is the portion of a wireless network that handles SMS operations, such as routing, forwarding and storing incoming text messages on their way to desired endpoints. Wireless network operators connect SMSCs through SMS gateways. http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/definition/short-message-service-center http://www.squire-technologies.co.uk/products/smsc-short-message-service-center.php http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=3582
