2. RNLI lifeguards back to patrol county beaches lifeguards will be ready at their units come rain or shine to offer help and advice to the public at Whitesands and Tenby South beach between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm from Saturday 28th May until September 4.

June 2011 RNLI lifeguards will be returning to another 11 of Pembrokeshires beaches on the June 25 ready for the school summer holidays. The lifeguards are highly trained and have the best equipment to ensure they can provide the best possible service again this season. Chris Rigby, Pembrokeshire RNLI lifeguard supervisor, said: The charitys lifeguards are looking forward to return to Whitesands and Tenby South beaches in Pembrokeshire this weekend. They have all been put through their paces over the past few weeks to ensure the highest level of fitness and training to help save lives on Welsh beaches this summer. Campaign to bring boaters to Milford Marina MILFORD Marina has launched a campaign to lure boaters and sailors from across Britain and Ireland to Pembrokeshire to enjoy the beautiful Haven and explore the countys treasures. Some of Britains largest boating and yachting magazines will be featuring Milford Marina and the Haven in their forthcoming publications after visits by key journalists. Their features on Pembrokeshire and the new developments at Milford Marina will reach 200,000 readers and it is hoped some will be tempted to bring their boats to the Haven this summer. 6. Stardom for St David's Cathedral and Carew and Pembroke castles BUDDING actors from Pembrokeshire could soon be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart, as filming for a BBC adaptation of a Shakespeare historical classic gets underway. Richard II is due to be filmed around St Davids Cathedral and the castles at Carew and Pembroke between June 13th and July 1st, the first of four new films to be based on the famous Bards work. MAREN PROJECT Marine Renewable Energies Call for case study stakeholders The MAREN Project is a collaborative-stakeholder linked- international research programme cofinanced with the support of the EU ERDF Atlantic Area Programme. The research partners are; Cardiff Universitys Hydro-environmental Research Centre, National University of Ireland, Galway; University of Cantabria, Spain, Centec, Instituto Superior Tecnico, Portugal, and Iferner, France; bringing a wide range of technological expertise to the modelling work. MAREN investigates the marine renewable energy forms of; offshore wind, tidal current, tidal barrage and lagoons, and wave, in the Atlantic Area to produce the following main outputs: Country Modelling Case Studies High resolution modelling and mapping of the resource potential Assessment of marine renewable energy device performance Assessment of the Environmental Impact Future climate change scenarios for resource, impacts and design requirements Carbon emission life-cycle analysis Comparative analysis of EIA and SEA protocol across the Atlantic corridor In the UK, MAREN proposes to work on the following case study sites: tidal barrage and tidal stream - Severn estuary & Llanelli- Loughor barrage, tidal impoundments Rhyl, Bridgewater bay & potentially Swansea bay ; wave SW Cornwall, Pembrokeshire, the Severn estuary, and offshore wind around the whole Welsh coastline and Severn estuary. 8. The Good Beach Guide - because clean seas mean great beaches! The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) campaigns to stop sewage pollution getting onto our beaches. This site lists every UK bathing beach, but we only recommend beaches with the best water quality. Click on the map on the right to find the cleanest bathing beaches near you, with information about lifeguards, beach facilities, and maps. Reports of sewage and oil on Welsh beaches is algae Environment Agency Wales officers investigating reports of raw sewage and oil affecting some beaches in Wales have confirmed that it is in fact algae. Over the last few weeks, officers have received reports from beaches between Porthcawl and Aberavon and as far west as Tenby. Algae has also been seen in north Wales near Aberdyfi, the Mawddach Estuary and the Menai Strait. Officers have collected samples and analysis has confirmed that the species of algae found were Chaetoceros and Phaeocystis. The recent warm weather, coupled with nutrients in the water, has caused foam to appear on the surface of the sea. In other cases, the algae has died causing a brown, lumpy material to be deposited on the beach. The algae is not dangerous but could cause a mild skin irritation if people come into contact with it. 10. Lundy fishing ban has 'positive effect' Divers said they believe a fishing ban off part of the Devon island of Lundy is having a positive effect on sea life. The first underwater survey of Lundy's "no take" zone in three years was filmed for the BBC's The Truth About Wildlife. The zone was set up off the east coast of the island eight years ago. Previous research showed a recovery in lobster numbers but no evidence that other species were recovering. Marine Consultant Dr Miles Hoskin said: "Part of the reason that the 'no take' zone was set up was a concern that the potting activity was damaging some other species of conservation importance like pink sea ferns and sponges and soft corals." 11. SEACAMS Round Wales Business Event Sustainable Expansion of the Applied Coastal and Marine Sectors (SEACAMS), an ambitious project to support a whole range of coastal and marine related industries, sets sail around Wales to promote its services to businesses in June. The SEACAMS team are launching their project at a number of venues round Wales in June, starting with an opportunity to meet the team aboard the RV Prince Madog, at Menai Bridge on the 8 June. The Prince Madog will then set sail, visiting Swansea on the 13 June and Cardiff on the 15 June. The team are holding shore-based exhibitions at all venues including Aberystwyth on the 16 June. Interactive map for marine planning launches online An interactive map of our seas has been launched by the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). The Marine Planning Portal allows anyone logging on to view a range of information and locations, from details of wind farm developments to conservation areas, and understand how busy our seas have become. The map offers a way to be involved and contribute to marine planning and using the controls, you can locate and then zoom in on particular areas or activities by selecting the specific data you want to see. Users can also post comments, make suggestions and submit new data to inform the plans in the East of England, which are expected to take two years to finalise. Landmark report on the status of Welsh ecosystems Environmental experts publish landmark report on the status of Welsh ecosystems and their value to society. Dozens of environmental experts have been working during the past two years to assemble information on the benefits provided by habitats, plants and animals to the people of Wales. These benefits, known as ecosystem services, flow from habitats such as farmland, woodlands, mountains and moorlands, rivers, lakes and seas, and our urban habitats. They include food, fibre and medicines, climate regulation, water purification and flood prevention, pollination of crops, and fundamental processes such as photosynthesis and soil formation, plus the physical and mental health benefits that we derive from countryside recreation and appreciation of our landscapes and

Endangered whales spotted off West coast Scientists have sighted one of the largest gatherings of giant fin whales ever seen in British waters off the Cornish coast. Researchers watched for 30 minutes as 21 fin whales fed near the surface 50 to 70 miles off Cornwall. The fin whale, the second largest animal on the planet, is a globally endangered species. Dr Tom Brereton, research director from Marinelife, said it was an "incredibly rare event". The species were seen in an area known as the Celtic Deep, between north Cornwall and south west Pembrokeshire, on May 21 while researchers were on a three-week cruise in the area surveying numbers of schooling fish such as sardines. 16. Renewables study published The Department of Energy and Climate Change today published an independent study on projected costs and deployment potential for different renewable electricity technologies up to 2030. The aim of the study undertaken by Arup - is to provide baseline data to inform a consultation this summer on support levels for a range of renewable electricity technologies for the period 2013-17 under the Renewables Obligation. The study is an independent assessment of scope and potential of technologies, and not a statement of government policy. Charles Hendry, Minister of State for Energy said: It is vital that our support for renewable electricity both encourages investment and represents value for money for consumers. This study provides a detailed picture of generation costs and deployment potential for a wide range of technologies to inform our work in this area. MCZ Project Interactive Map The Marine Conservation Zone Project is a partnership project working with people who use the sea for their livelihood or leisure to identify Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs). The project area covers English inshore waters and the offshore waters around England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It has been split into four regional MCZ projects Finding Sanctuary, Irish Sea Conservation Zones, Net Gain and Balanced Seas. Through this interactive map you can see different information layers and view the developing network configurations from the four regional MCZ projects. International News 18. New report on progress of Common Fisheries Policy On 25 May 2011 the European Commission published its report on progress achieved in the Common Fisheries Policy over the last few years and its suggestions for fishing opportunities in EU waters in 2012. The document sets out how the Commission intends to act on the scientific advice it receives about the state of fish stocks when proposing catch limits and quotas for next year for. The latest figures show that the state of fish stocks in European waters is slowly improving, but sufficient scientific data is still missing for the majority of the stocks, mainly due to inadequate reporting by Member States. The Commission will therefore be using a new method for setting fishing limits, notably cutting levels where insufficient data exist. The Commission's ideas will now be the object of

June 2011 a wide consultation over the summer and input will feed into its proposals for fishing opportunities for next year which will be adopted in the autumn. 19. Reducing plastic marine litter in Mediterranean: a "Fishing for Litter" campaign in France The launch of the Waste Free Ocean project took place on 20 May 2011 at Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, Nice. In this pilot project, set up by the European Plastics Converters, an EU-level Trade Association, fishermen are purposely making trips with a specially designed boom to collect surface litter. Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki welcomes this joint project of the plastics and fisheries industries and hopes the practice will be extended to other Member States. Financial support for such initiatives is possible through the European Fisheries Fund. 20. What fish is on your plate? Commission scientists publish report on how new technologies can tackle fishing fraud Low-cost catfish fillets sold as expensive sole fillets or cod caught in the North Sea but declared as originating from the Baltic Sea are both examples of types of fraud in the fisheries sector. A European Commission report published today shows how molecular technologies - based on genetics, genomics, chemistry and forensics - can provide clear answers to questions such as "what species does this fish product come from.where was this fish caught.is it wild or farmed?". The report by the Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), is called "Deterring illegal activities in the fisheries sector" and shows how these technologies can help in the fight against illegal practices and support traceability- including of processed products such as canned fish - "from ocean to fork". Consultations 21. Review of Bathing Water Designations for 2012 We want views on which waters in Wales should be identified (designated) as bathing waters. This is required under the European Bathing Water Directive. The directive aims to: protect human health by requiring Member States to identify popular bathing waters; monitor their water quality; inform bathers about water quality; and try to achieve good water quality at all designated sites. We are seeking proposals for new bathing waters and for any existing bathing waters that should no longer be identified (de-designated). This review will inform the 2012 list of bathing waters. If there are any coastal or inland bathing areas that you consider appropriate to be designated or dedesignated as bathing waters, please provide evidence.

Sale of Trust Ports in England and Wales - Consultation on revised criteria A Department of Transport Consultation letter seeking comments on the revised criteria that the Government will regard as particularly relevant when deciding on the appropriateness of the sale of a major trust port under the Ports Act 1991, whether under a voluntary or compulsory sales process. Further chance to comment on National Park planning guidance Comments are being invited on draft guidance for planning issues including renewable energy and Conservation Area Proposals in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. People have the chance to submit their views on three new sets of Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG), which are supplementary to policies of the Local Development Plan for the National Park. The documents are being proposed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority and they cover Conservation Areas, renewable energy and Regionally Important Geodiversity Sites (RIGS). Supplementary Planning Guidance on Shopfront Design has also been produced jointly with Pembrokeshire County Council and covers the whole of the county including the National Park. Each SPG is available online from the National Park website at www.pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk (click on the SPG section of the scrolling picture on the homepage). The Shopfront Design supplementary planning guidance is also available on Pembrokeshire County Council's web site at www.pembrokeshire.gov.uk. This public consultation follows an earlier consultation on SPGs covering different planning issues by the National Park. The deadline for submitting comments is July 15th and all comments will be reported to a meeting of the National Park Authority and made public. Comments submitted on the Shopfront Design SPG will also be considered by Pembrokeshire County Council and a report of consultation will be produced, considered by Council and made available to the public. Those who submitted comments will be advised of the outcome of the meetings. The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Local Development Plan guides decisions on planning applications within the National Park area. The Joint Unitary Development Plan guides decisions on planning applications outside the National Park.
