Lawrence

Arts Center
2009-2010
Annual Report
To enrich individuals and the community by nurturing love for the arts
through

exhibition, performance, and education.
From the Board President

For the Lawrence Arts Center, 2009-10 has been a signifcant year. We completed a search for a new
Executive Director and were delighted to appoint Susan Tate in that role. Susan has a background in
education and has served widely on arts related non-proft Boards in the City. Susan began her duties
in December 2009 and has had a dramatic positive impact on the Center. She has managed the
Center in these tough economic times and has dedicated her efort wholeheartedly towards the
mission of the Center, To enrich individuals and the community by nurturing love of the arts
through education, exploration and expression.
As many organizations have during the past couple of years, the Arts Center has felt the impact of the
downturn in the economy. However, with patron and staf loyalty, a dedicated Board, the good will
of leaders in the community, and the exceptional eforts of the new Executive Director, we are closing
the year in a relatively strong position. As we celebrate the Lawrence Arts Centers 35th Birthday, we
look forward to renewing the Center for its next phase of operation. Thirty-fve years is considered a
statistical generation and so next year we begin our own re-generation.
This year, artists, volunteers, businesses and citizens of Lawrence also responded to our needs with
support and generosity. My sincere thanks go to you all. We have lately seen increased individual
and corporate charitable giving to the Center and had the best fund-raising outcome in many years
during the donated-art Lawrence Arts Center Art Auction in April. We have seen an increase in
attendance at Center events, especially encouraging for new ventures such as Story Slam. The
Center is developing as a hub for the communitys interests, especially in the area of new media.
We have enjoyed increased event activity and public visibility through the Centers use by ancillary
organizations in Lawrence. The Arts Center also received support or assistance from external
agencies such as the Kansas Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the
Mid American Arts Alliance, providing additional valid credibility for our reputation and mission.
This past year we said farewell to some stalwarts on the Board who completed their Board terms
and whose immeasurable efort sustained the Center through its leadership transitional days. These
include June Jones, Mike Maude and Phil Rademacher. A sincere thank you to them for their service
to the Center.
Happily, wonderful new community Lawrencians have joined the Board of Directors this year,
bringing an array of skills, talent and dedicated energy. These include John Bullock, Carol Ann Carter,
Julie Carter, Ellen Chindamo, Kate Harding Pohl, Dan Schriner, Lisa Leroux Smith and Evan Williams.
I close my tenure as Board President optimistic that the Center is in a positive state of change and,
with the support of the public, we look forward to presenting the city with a community Arts Center
that engages the people of Lawrence for many years to come.

Arts Education:
Preschool, Visual Arts,
Dance, and Theater
The Lawrence Arts Center ofers arts education for
preschoolers through adults. We have a sequential
curriculum that students may follow to develop
expertise in multiple mediums, but we also ofer
beginning courses for all ages.
The Lawrence Arts Center Arts-Based preschool began September 2009 by
planting a garden in the new raised beds made by Steve Richardson with a grant
from the Rotary Club of Lawrence. We planted fall crops that provided food for
our guinea pigsGeorge and Oreo. Gardening is an ongoing activity in the
preschool. In January, we added an additional class on Tuesday/Thursday
afternoons.
Teachers Leslie McCafrey and Linda Reimond were invited to present a workshop
50 Ways to Use the Easel at Creativity: Where the Future Begins May 14-15. This
early childhood/art conference was sponsored by the Pittsburgh Association for
the Education of Young Children in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Council
on the Arts and the Allegheny County Family Support Policy Board.
594 preschool children attended classes at the Arts Center this year, and
approximately 900 preschoolers attended programming supported by the Arts
Center in partnership with Head Start, Little Nations, the Ballard Center, Childrens
Learning Center, and Sunshine Acres.
Preschool
Over 1,500 students in classes for children, teens, and adults enrolled in a Vi-
sual Arts Curriculum at the Arts Center that includes drawing, painting, ceram-
ics, metal smithing, glass, printmaking, digital media, photography.
Visual Arts
Dance
Wonderful dancing flled the Lawrence Arts Center stage throughout the year as close to 3,400
audience members laughed, cried, sighed and applauded during Dance performances. In December,
A Kansas Nutcracker once again delighted the Lawrence community with close to 150 actors, dancers,
directors, musicians, and tech personnel. 1,560 attended the six performances. The 27-member Youth
Ballet Company directed by Deborah Bettinger presented a charming Snow White and Rose Red to
close to 300 audience members. In May 40 youth came together to create a Peanut, Pretzel, Popcorn,
Jazz Ensemble original dance theater production of Jedi Knights and Galactic Princesses: The Fight
2NotB Polluted. Seen by over 240 audience members, the show celebrated Earth Day.

June featured an intensive dance workshop with Sean Duus of Kansas City Ballet and Ben Wegman of
The Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Washington D.C.
The annual Dance Gala 2010 in May featured youth and adults showcasing what they had learned in
their dance classes since September. Nearly 300 students took part in our 2010 Dance Gala. 1,100
community members attended these performances.
In July 25 students brought the story of Charlottes Web to life in a dance version that was Terrifc!
Stupendous! Awesome! 175 were in the audience for this production.
In all, the 2009-2010 Dance Education Porgram held 300 classes with over 2,600 enrollments.

The 940 Dance Company under the artistic direction of Susan Rieger had an outstanding year: receiving
over $20,000 in grants, hosting and outstanding 3-day Choreography Festival with Liz Lerman as a
special guest and two regional showcases of work. Additionally, they toured to Greensburg, Liberal,
Salina, Stockton, and several Kansas City area communities; created an all-new school performance
about the Two Faces of the Wind; performed in a collaborative event with Kansas University dancers
held at the Freedom Rings Sculpture site near Clinton Lake; did 22 preschool workshops through the
Lied Center and created several thoughtful, elegant, and humorous new works to delight Lawrence and
area audiences.
940 Dance Company
Theater
280 children and youth took part on stage and behind the scenes in theater productions.
The year had three particularly wonderful performance highlights.
THE COPPELIA PROJECT; A CLOWN BALLET, toured Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, sharing Heidi Vans wonderful physical theatre piece across the
country.
OLIVER! was the frst ever age-appropriate musical production for family audiences at
the Arts Center. Involving more than 60 community members in a wonderful
celebration of Lawrence talent, professional and community, this production was
attended by approximately 850 audience members.
HAIR! sold out all its performances as the most successful Summer Youth Theatre musical
ever. More than 55 students worked for an entire month and learned through a Kansas
Humanities Council grant that allowed us to share speakers on Myth and Magic;
Lawrence in a time of change, with both the students and the general public. As a result,
HAIR! was attended not only by friends and family, but by the general public as well.
In all the Theatre program mounted 33 productions, including fnal productions in
childrens classes, Saturday Players, City Youth Theater, our family musical, and Summer
Youth Theater.
Theater
The Arts Center Theater program enrolled 478 students in 2009-2010 in
both acting and performance-based classes. Over 25,000 audience
members attended Theater and Film events.
Film
As our flm program began to expand this year, we began to use new
terminology, like Media Studies and Digital Cinema.
We held our second annual short flm festival in April and received 28 entries. 130
students enrolled in new media classes and workshops.
The biggest event of the 2009-2010 year was the Film Intensive, held in
conjunction with the University of Kansas Film and Media Studies department.
We sponsored a showing of THE ONLY GOOD INDIAN, feature flm by Kevin Will-
mott and MARIACHI ESTRELLA, a documentary by Peter Jasso and Marlo Angell.
The Intensive also featured workshops by local professional and university flm
makers. Well attended and enjoyable, the Saturday night screening include live
Mariachi music. As a result of the Intensive, we were able to get Joel Feigenbaum,
Hollywood writer, director, and producer to become the lead teacher/mentor for
this Falls Digital Cinema class. Marlo Angell also agreed to coordinate our Digital
Media studies program and will be arranging classes and teachers for the
upcoming year.
Exhibitions
The fall of 2009 Ben Ahlvers began as Exhibitions Director.
Ben and Kris Hermanson presented an exhibition called Common Ground, featuring student art work
from the past 8 years at the Lawrence Arts Center. Every available wall space was flled with over 300
works of art. The 2008-09 Printmaking Artist-in-Residence, Donika Wiley held her exhibit in the small
gallery, while a Lawrence Arts Center Faculty Exhibit flled the large gallery. The opening reception
hosted hundreds in the Arts Center. Staf from the Eye Doctors Optometrist & Peoples Optical then
welcomed all to the visual arts studios for demonstrations by Arts Center Instructors. In conjunction,
art collectives from Lawrence were invited to present to the public their organizations goals and
activities. Capping of 3 nights of presentations by local art groups were our key note speakers, Bruce
Hartman, Director of the Nerman Museum, the cast from Rare Visions & Roadside Revelations and one
of the curators of Heartland, Kerstin Niemann.
Jan Gaumnitz flled both galleries at the Lawrence Arts Center in one of the most highly attended solo
exhibitions in the Lawrence Arts Center. A series of themed exhibits curated by Ben Ahlvers brought a
diverse range of artists together from the region. Place, Character Building/Building Character,
Animalia, and POP highlighted great art being created in Lawrence while introducing artists usually
associated with Kansas City to the Lawrence Community. The 2009 - 10 Artists-in-Residence, Alison
Filley and Sarah Gross brought new energy and talent to Lawrence during their year here.
Following the success of Common Ground, the Arts Center has committed to exhibiting art in the
lobby areas on an ongoing basis and to Art in the Open, an project that invites artists to work in our
lobby. Thirteen artists took us up on this invitation the last few months of 2009-2010.
Our 30th annual Art Auction, featuring the work of Carol Ann Carter and work by 140 other artists,
attested to the enthusiasm our artistic community feels for our exhibitions program. This year marked
many changes to this event. The 2010 Auction was the frst for our new Exhibitions Director and
Executive Director. Together they oversaw the cultivation of new and familiar donating artists and
patrons. This years Auction raised $101,000 and captured the highest percentage of retail value for
art in many years. We are very thankful to all the artists, volunteers and event sponsor, Peoples Optical
& the Eye Doctors Optometrists, for making this year a success. Without the success of this event, the
Exhibitions program would not survive. 2009-2010 saw the work of 345 artists exhibited in our
galleries and lobby spaces. In addition, three public school exhibits ofered the work of hundreds of
public school students and Common Ground featured the work of 275 Arts Center students.

summer, serving 100 children.
ARTSreach for Teens
The Arts Center provides weekly arts programming to teens at the Juvenile Detention Center and the county Day School. Arts
Center art instructor Laura Ramberg serves approximately 30 teenagers a week. In 2009, the Arts Center provided arts education
to 381 students in JDC and 54 in the Day School. To date in 2010, 197 JDC students have taken arts classes provided by the Arts
Center.
ARTSreach for Adults and Families
Susan Rieger, licensed clinical social worker and Artistic Director of the 940 Dance Company, provides a movement group to
women in recovery from substance abuse at First Step House. This weekly group uses creative movement to physicalize the
process of change. The group consists of a warm up and group bonding exercises, then culminates in an activity that asks the
women to create movement, which refects some facet of their inner work.
In addition, the Arts Centers 940 Dance Company provides a yearly concert, entitled Transformations, for the residents, their
families and the staf of First Step House, seeking to recognize the incredible courage and strength required for addiction re-
covery. Approximately 175 residents, 5 staf and 75 family members beneft annually from the direct services of this ARTSreach
program.

From the Director
I was elated to join the Lawrence Arts Center staf this past winter. As we moved through the remaining six
months of the 2009-2010 fscal year together, the dedication of this creative, dynamic, and hardworking
staf was humbling and exhilarating.
Our staf ofered the best in contemporary exhibitions, arts education, and performance as the Arts Center
has done for 35 years. Their ability to keep this Place to Imagine alive without a director and during a time
when many arts organizations have been closing their doors is a testimony to their work ethic and the
support of a community that values the arts. I wish to convey my gratitude to our staf and to a board of
directors who have been both generous and diligent in their attentions to the Arts Center. Board President
Bill Carswell has been a sustaining force for the Arts Center and for me personally.
The past seven months have proven to me that Lawrence and the region have high expectations of the
Lawrence Arts Center that they are willing to support. Thank you to all businesses and individuals who
believe in the value of the Lawrence Arts Center as a regional intersection for education, social mission,
scholarship, and the arts. I am optimistic about the future vibrancy of the Arts Center as a place where art
inspires conversation across our community, where artists gather, teach, create, perform, and exhibit, and
where children, teens and adults engage in visual and performing arts classes: where all combinations of
these exchanges change lives.
