The Institute of Byzantine Musicology of the Holy

Synod of the Church of Greece organized and completed
the 1st Pan-Hellenic Conference of Chant, from 3 to 5
November 2000 in Athens, with main subject Theory and
Praxis of the Psaltic Art. During this Conference it was
attempted the redeployment of the greek scientific and
psaltic human potention, the scientific consideration and
exploration of the general subject, as well as the historical
and theoretical verification of the aspects, which shape the
diversiform musical expression of the worship of the greek
and the other nations of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
Upon the success of the 1st Conference, the Institute
of Byzantine Musicology, and after the proposal of the
Director Prof. Gregorios Stathis, set as a target the
convocation of a triennial Conference at an international
level and with dual character, musicological and psalticartistic. Hence, the 2nd International Conference was held
from 15 to 19 October 2003. The main title remained as
Theory and Praxis of the Psaltic Art, while the more
specialized theme The Genera and the Categories of the
Byzantine Melopoeia was introduced.
The 3rd International Conference is going to be
organized this year, Anno Domini 2006, in Athens, always
with main theme Theory and Praxis of the Psaltic Art,
and again with the dual character emphasing on the
musicological and psaltic-artistic aspects. This plan invites
all scientists and psaltes-musicologists and all psaltesartists to participate and allows the selection of four or
five Choirs from Greece and other homodox countries.
The Director of the Institute of Byzantine Musicology and
the Organizing Committee hope for the success of the 3rd
Conference and the strengthening of the estate, with the
benediction of the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece
Christodoulos.
