Lucas 2:52 con el Sermn del Monte, el Ministerio de
Jvenes de LifeWay ha desarrollado una estrategia que
preparar a los jvenes para CONOCER a Dios, POSEER
su fe y COMPARTIR su fe.
El seoro y el discipulado son fundamentales para
que los jvenes CONOZCAN a Cristo. Segn ellos se
desarrollen, no tan solo reconocern y respondern
al seoro de Cristo, sino que adems comenzarn
a practicar las disciplinas espiritualesdesarrollar
habilidades tales como la oracin, la memorizacin de las
Escrituras y la mayordoma.
Qu hace que el joven se POSEE de su fe? El carcter
y el discernimiento son esenciales. A medida que los
jvenes se desarrollen, demuestren el carcter de Cristo
y comiencen a confiar en la autoridad de las Escrituras,
tomarn decisiones sabias y asumirn responsabilidades
por dichas decisiones.
COMPARTIR a Cristo es la expresin externa del desarrollo
espiritual interno de los jvenes y esto es notable en
las relaciones que ellos desarrollan y la influencia que
tienen. Los jvenes harn un impacto en otros luego de
desarrollar relaciones que honren a Dios.

How did Jesus develop? According to Luke 2:52, He
increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with
God and with people, and we believe students should
develop the same way. By combining Luke 2:52 with
the Sermon on the Mount, LifeWay Student Ministry has
developed a strategy that will equip students to KNOW
God, OWN their faith, and make their faith KNOWN.
Lordship and discipleship are foundational for students
to KNOW Christ. As students develop, not only will they
recognize and respond to the lordship of Christ, they will
begin to practice spiritual disciplinesdeveloping skills
such as prayer, Scripture memory, and stewardship.
What does it take for a student to OWN his or her faith?
Character and discernment are essentials. As students
develop and demonstrate Christs character and begin
to trust the authority of Scripture, they will make wise
decisions and assume responsibility for those decisions.
Making Christ KNOWN is the outward expression of a
students inward spiritual development and is seen in
the relationships students develop and influence they
possess. As students develop godly relationships, they
will make an intentional impact on others.

This study focuses on the many different things
students put their trust in. In life, we all have to
place our trust in people, systems, and even our
own selves to participate in this world. However, we
will all discover that at the end of the day, we can
only ultimately trust and count on God. People will
fail, systems will change, and we will always make
mistakes. But God will never fail us. He will always be
there and will always help those who put their full trust
in him. Never quit on God! He will be with you for all
eternity.

Juego: En quin debo confiar?
Para presentar este juego divida el grupo en equipos de tres estudiantes. Cada equipo jugar
por separado frente al resto del grupo. A uno de los tres estudiantes del grupo se le vendarn
los ojos. A continuacin, coloque una de las bolsitas (con premios) en un extremo del saln.

Get Ready
Game Who Should I Trust?
To introduce this game, divide your group into teams of three students in each team. Each
team of three will take their turn separately in front of the rest of the groups. Blindfold one of
the three students in the group. Then set one of your bags (with the prize) in one corner of the
room. Set the other bag (without the prize) in another corner. Place the three students away
from the two bags. Put obstacles in between the students and the two bags.
The object is for the blindfolded student to reach one of the bags at the other end of the
room. He will get there by receiving verbal directions from the other two students. However,
one of the other two students will be guiding him/her toward the bag with the prize, while
the other student will guide him/her toward the bag without the prize. Each of the other two
students is to take turns providing directions by giving the number of steps and the direction
of the steps that the blindfolded student should take. Each guide is to only give three
instructions at a time. Example: Take two steps forward, take two steps to the right, and take
five steps to the left.
The job of the two students giving directions is to try to intensely convince the blindfolded
student that their bag has the prize in it. Now, the job of the blindfolded student is to decide
which of the two students guiding him/her is leading toward the bag with the prize. He/she
may choose to ignore directions from one of the two guides. However, that guide will still have
a turn to try to change the blindfolded students mind. The blindfolded student may change
his/her mind half way toward one of the bags. Only the blindfolded student is to be unaware
of which bag has the prize. Everyone else in the class will know which bag has the prize; this
will make it more exciting for the entire group.
If the blindfolded student reaches the bag that has the prize, he and the student guide will
get a prize. If the blindfolded student reaches the bag without the prize, only the student that
led him/her gets a prize. Repeat this with the other three student teams.
Introduce the Study
Begin by showcasing the Leader Pack The Trust Factor! (item 1). Say: The focus of this
weeks lesson is on Trusting Leaders.

Study the Word
1. God Watches and Holds our Leaders Accountable! (1 Sam. 2:22-25)
On a display board or poster, write down the following questions and separate them into two
columns. What do you think makes a leader trustworthy? What do you think makes a leader
untrustworthy? Guide students to write some of the answers in the Learner Guides activity,
God Watches and Holds our Leaders Accountable.
Select a volunteer to read the passage aloud. Say: The High Priest Eli and his two priestly
sons Hophni and Phinehas were chosen by God to be leaders for all of Gods people in Israel.
What an awesome responsibility! Emphasize: However, Eli and his sons messed up big time!
Ask and discuss the following questions: Was God able to trust these leaders as priests? Why
or why not? Why do you think it was important for God to hold these leaders accountable for
their actions? Why do you think God is not only a God of love, mercy, and grace, but also a
God of judgment? What do you think of when you hear of the word holy?
Be prepared to talk about the word holy. It means: to be consecrated, set aside, or set
apart for God and His sacred use.

Dirija sus estudiantes a Seor, t me apartaste y tendr que rendir cuentas. Puedes

2. Dios no juega con lderes que le desobedecen! (1 Sam. 3:11-18)

Say: Eli and his sons were set apart by God as priests for Gods holy and sacred use in the
Tabernacle. We as Christians are also consecrated and set apart by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Although God through Jesus Christ has forgiven us of our sins, Christians are also held
accountable for our actions.
Direct your students to the activity, Lord, you set me apart and are holding me
accountable! I can be trusted in the Learner Guide. Spend about five minutes answering
the questions. For the first question, these are possible answers: come to church more, read
the bible more, worship ministries, become a future pastor.
2. God Doesnt Play with Leaders Who Disobey Him! (1 Sam. 3:11-18)
Direct one of your students to read this passage aloud. Say: God selects leaders to be
examples so that others will follow them. If leaders disobey God, then followers are in
danger of disobeying as well. Emphasize: God removed Eli and his sons from leading,
because of their horrible and deliberate disobedience.
Red Flag, Stay Away!
Distribute Leader Pack Red Flags (item 2) to each student. Direct students to write down
things they are to stay away from, for which they know that God will hold them accountable.
They are to write each sin on a different Red Flag. In addition, encourage students to write
them also in the space provided in their Learner Guides. Examples for this can be: Sexual
immorality, lust, drunkenness, selfishness, etc. Direct them write each sin in a different red
flag. You can also make reference to Galatians 5:19-21 and/or Colossians 3:5-9.
Display a blank poster on the wall. At the top of the poster, write the title: Things that God
is holding me accountable to stay away from. Direct each student to paste or tape their red
flags on the poster (face down). After that, take some time to pray together, that God would
keep everyone away from these temptations.
3. Obey and Follow God, and Ill be with You (1 Sam 3:19-21)
Instruct another student to read the passage aloud. Say: Samuel obeyed God faithfully.
Therefore, God prepared Samuel to replace Eli, just as he may be preparing us to fill
a leadership role. Samuel was ready, willing, and able to be used by God as a leader.
Emphasize: We will see leaders come and go. God may remove some instantly and others
may choose to leave voluntarily.
Guide your students to answer the questions under Obey and Follow God, and Ill
Follow You in their Learner Guides. For the third question, encourage students to fill out
the diagram. Say: Samuels mentor and leader failed him. Instead of wilting and giving up
on God, Samuel realized that it was not God who failed and that now it was time for him to
step up and be a godly leader. Although imperfect human beings may sometimes fail, God
is perfect, and He will never fail us. As Christian leaders, we should never give up on Gods
Word and should always be ready to take and live Christs message.
Apply the Word
Pick a Name Out of the Hat
Write the names of the pastors and key leaders of your church on pieces of paper and put
them in a bag. Instruct students to pick out a name. If there are more students than leaders
to choose from, the same leader can be chosen multiple times. Encourage students to write a
note or send an email this week to the leader he or she chose. If you have time, they can write
the note in class. They are to thank the pastors/leaders for being faithful and obedient to
God. This will serve to motivate and encourage them more than you can imagine.
End your lesson by praying for your church pastor/pastors and leaders. Pray specifically that
God would help them to lead in accordance with what was discussed in todays lesson.

1. Dios observa a los lderes y ellos tendrn
que rendirle cuentas (1 Sam. 2:22-25)
El primer captulo de 1 Samuel comienza con la
presentacin de dos familias diferentes. La primera
familia era la de Elcana, un israelita del monte de
Efran (1 Sam. 1:1). Elcana tena dos esposas. Ana, la
primera esposa, era estril.
Ana prometi que si Dios le conceda un hijo,
ella se lo devolvera a l para todos los das de su
vida (1:11). El Seor concedi su peticin y le dio
la bendicin de un hijo, a quien ella le puso por
nombre Samuel (1:19-20). Ana fue fiel a su palabra
y despus que lo hubo destetado llev a Samuel
para entregarlo al Seor. Elcana y Ana dejaron a
Samuel con el sacerdote El para que ministrara a
Jehov (1:24-28; 2:11).
La segunda familia que se nos presenta en el
captulo 1 es la de El y sus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees
(1:3). El era sacerdote (1:9) y juez (4:18); sus hijos
tambin ministraban como sacerdotes en Silo. En
contraste con Elcana y el hijo de Ana, los hijos de El
traicionaron la sagrada responsabilidad que Dios les
haba confiado. Finalmente la noticia lleg a odos
de El y l se enter de todo lo que sus hijos hacan
con todo Israel. Lo que escuch no era bueno. Sus
hijos deshonraban a Dios, por lo menos, en dos
grandes aspectos.
Los versculos 12-17 del captulo 2 describen a los
hijos de El, Ofni y Finees, como hombres impos,
sin respeto por el nico Dios verdadero. Ellos
no tenan conocimiento de Jehov. Su completa
indiferencia hacia Dios puede verse en la forma en
que ambos se aprovechaban de su cargo litrgico
para su beneficio personal. Prepararon un garfio de
tres dientes para tomar de los sacrificios porciones
mayores de lo que les corresponda (Lev. 7:28-36).
Tambin exigan su porcin de carne antes de que se
quemara la grasa, y le indicaron a su siervo que de
ser necesario la tomara por la fuerza. El pecado de
Ofni y Finees eran muy grande delante de Jehov.
Esto era una falta de respeto hacia la ofrenda:
menospreciaban las ofrendas de Jehov. Levtico
10:1-11 nos da una idea de cun seria era a los ojos
de Dios la falta al deber sacerdotal. Un Dios santo
no iba a permitir que los hijos de El continuaran sin
recibir castigo.
1. God Watches and Holds our Leaders
Accountable (1 Sam. 2:22-25)
The first chapter of 1 Samuel begins by introducing
us to two different families. The first family
belonged to Elkanah, an Israelite from the hill
country of Ephraim (1 Sam. 1:1). Elkanah had two
wives. Hannah, the first wife, was barren.
Hannah vowed that if God would give her a son,
she would give that son back to Him (1:11). The Lord
granted her request and blessed Hannah with a son,
Samuel (1:19-20). She was faithful to her word and
gave Samuel back to the Lord. Elkanah and Hannah
left Samuel with Eli the priest to serve the Lord
(1:24-28; 2:11).
The second family introduced in chapter 1 is that
of Eli and his two sons, Hophni and Phinehas (1:3).
Eli was a priest (1:9) and a judge (4:18), and his sons
also served as priests at Shiloh. But in contrast to
Elkanah and Hannahs son, Elis sons violated the
sacred trust given to them by the Lord. The news
eventually reached Eli. He heard about everything
his sons were doing to all Israel. What he heard was
not good. His sons had dishonored God in two ways.
Verses 12-17 of chapter 2 tell us that Hophni
and Phinehas were wicked men (sons of Belial).
They had no regard for, or knowledge of, the
Lord. This disregard for the Lord can be seen in
the way Hophni and Phinehas took advantage
of their liturgical office for personal gain. They
used a three-pronged meat fork to take more of a
sacrifice then they were entitled to (Lev. 7:28-36).
They also demanded their meat portion before the
fat was burned, and they instructed their servant
to take it by force if necessary. The sin of Hophni
and Phinehas was a travesty in the presence of the
Lord. They abused their priestly office and treated
the Lords offering with contempt. Leviticus 10:1-11
records the seriousness with which the Lord takes
priestly misconduct. A holy God would not allow
this to go on without punishment.

First Samuel 2:22-25 shows us that the violation
of Gods sacred trust by Hophni and Phinehas did
not stop with liturgical sins. The brothers added
moral sins to their catalog of priestly misconduct.
Elis sons were sleeping with the women who served
at the entrance to the tabernacle. It is difficult to
say who these women were. They may have been
volunteers doing menial chores (Ex. 38:8) or cultic
prostitutes like those found at pagan shrines (Hos.
4:14). If they were cultic prostitutes, then Hophni
and Phinehas were guilty of filling the land with
depravity (Lev. 19:29).
Eli tried to confront his sons and reason with
them. He used legal imagery to warn his errant
sons. Two cases were examined. In the first case, Eli
reminded them that if a man sins against another
man, the sinner has recourse to God Himself to
intercede or mediate on his behalf. But, if, as in the
second case, a man sins against the Lord, there will
be no one capable of interceding on behalf of the
sinner. Unfortunately, Hophni and Phinehas would
not listen to their father. Since they committed
capital offenses (Lev. 7:25; 22:9), they could only
expect the death penalty to be brought against them.
The phrase the LORD would slay them can also
be translated the Lord was pleased to kill them.
It would be wrong to conclude from this statement
that the Lord delights in killing people. The Lord
does not wish any to perish. Instead, He desires
that all come to repentance (2 Pet. 3:9). But He
does desire justice and He will not let the guilty go
unpunished (Ex. 34:7). The divine judgment against
Hophni and Phinehas was the direct result of their
decision to reject God. They had hardened their
hearts against God and rejected the pleas of their
father. They persisted in sins that were abominable
to the Lord. This means that their disregard for God
was so complete that Gods judgment was inevitable.
Consequently, they were confirmed in their sins and
beyond redemption. Their punishment would be a
warning to others.

veces a El lo que iba a hacer respecto al pecado
de sus hijos. La primera vez envi a un varn de
Dios annimo, un profeta, para pronunciar su
juicio (1 Sam. 2:27-36). Dios conden a Ofni y Finees
por rechazar su sagrada responsabilidad y por
despreciar los sacrificios y las ofrendas que el pueblo
de Israel llevaba a Silo. El Seor tambin conden
a El por honrar a sus hijos ms que a Dios. Como
consecuencia de esto, el Seor proclam que iba a
cortar la casa de El. Ofni y Finees murieron ese
mismo da, y las futuras generaciones de la familia
de El fueron despojadas del oficio sacerdotal.
En el pasaje de estudio Dios habla nuevamente

a llevar a cabo por completo, de principio a fin. Tal
y como lo dijo, Dios juzg a la familia de El para
siempre.
El castigo de Dios no era injusto. El saba acerca
de la iniquidad de sus hijos, pero no los haba
estorbado. El pec al no reprenderlos, pero esper
tanto para hacerlo que Dios lo hizo responsable por
no actuar responsablemente en su oficio sagrado,
en especial, en lo relacionado a su propia familia.
Los padres no deben rendir cuentas por los pecados
de sus hijos desobedientes, pero s son responsables
de ser fieles al confrontar a sus hijos y advertirles

2. God Doesnt Play with Leaders Who Disobey
Him (1 Sam. 3:11-18)
In the case of Hophni and Phinehas, the Lord twice
revealed to Eli what He was going to do about
their sin. The first time, God sent an unnamed
prophet to speak His judgment (1 Sam. 2:27-36).
God condemned Hophni and Phinehas for rejecting
their sacred trust and despising the sacrifices and
offerings brought by the people of Israel to Shiloh.
The Lord also condemned Eli for honoring his sons
more than God. As a result, the Lord proclaimed
that He would cut short Elis house. Hophni and
Phinehas would die on the same day, and future
generations of Elis family would be stripped of their
priestly office.
In our focal passage, God repeated this judgment
a second time, this time to Samuel. God chose to
reveal His word to Samuel (3:7) while he was still
a young boy serving at the tabernacle. When God
spoke, Samuel obeyed and responded, Speak; for
thy servant heareth (3:10).
God told Samuel that He was going to do
something in Israel that would make everyone who
heard about it shudder (literally, make their two
ears ring). On that day, Gods judgment would be
carried out completely, from beginning to end. Just
as He had said, God would judge Elis family forever.
Gods punishment was not unjust. Eli knew about
his sons iniquity, but he had not stopped them. It
was a sin for Eli to fail to rebuke them, or to wait
so long to do so. God held Eli accountable for his
failure to exercise his sacred office, especially within
his own family. Parents are not held accountable
for the sins of their disobedient children, but they
are held accountable to be faithful to confront
their children and warn them of the consequences
of their sins. As part of the family of God, we are
commanded to confront our brothers and sisters
when they sin (Jas. 5:19-20; Ezek. 3:17-21).

En la frase han blasfemado, en el v. 13, la frase
es una forma del verbo que significa tomar a la
ligera. Ofni y Finees tomaron a la ligera su sagrada

El mensaje es claro. Quienes no toman en serio sus
cargos religiosos y los utilizan para beneficio propio,

3. Obedece y sigue a Dios y l estar contigo
(1 Sam. 3:19-21)
Dios confirm a Samuel como su profeta, demos-
trando que an tena el control. Primera de Samuel
3:19 dice, al menos, dos cosas importantes: Primero,
Samuel creci, y Jehov estaba con l. La presencia
de Dios confirmaba su llamado sobre la vida de
Samuel. Dios no dej solo a Samuel en una situacin
confusa. Recordemos que, a nosotros, tampoco Dios
nos dejar solos (Mat. 28:20).
El versculo tambin afirma que Dios no dej
caer a tierra ninguna de las palabras de Samuel.

In 1 Samuel 3:13, the Hebrew verb translated
made themselves vile literally means making
light. Jewish tradition suggests that Elis sons
cursed God. Hophni and Phinehas were making
light of their sacred task and, consequently, making
light of God. The message is clear. Punishment
awaits those who make light of their religious
positions by misusing them for sinful gain. The fall
of the house of Eli stands as a stark warning to those
who minister in the church. No sacrifice could make
atonement for the sins of Eli and his sons.
Samuel was afraid to tell Eli what God had said.
No one likes to be the bearer of bad news. Eli did
not let Samuel off the hook. He asked him not to
hide what God had said. After Samuel told him
everything, Eli made a surprising confession. One
might expect Eli to have responded in a negative
way to the prophecy. But Eli knew that he was
dealing with a holy and sovereign God. God had
said there would be no atonement for the sins of Elis
house. Eli took full responsibility for his actions. He
confessed that the Lord would do what He thinks is
good. Even when He disciplines us, Gods will for
our lives is perfect and good in every way.
3. Obey and Follow God, and Ill be with You
(1 Sam. 3:19-21)
God demonstrated that He was still in control
by confirming Samuel as His prophet. Verse 19
in our focal passage states two important things.
First, as Samuel grew, the Lord was with him. The
confirmation of Gods call on Samuels life is shown
in Gods presence with him. God did not leave
Samuel alone in a confusing situation. Remember
that God will not leave us alone either. His presence
is promised to us through His Son (Matt. 28:20).
The verse also states that God let nothing he said
prove false; God let none of his words fall to the
ground. Obviously, the phrase refers to Samuels
prophetic ministry. God saw to it that all of Samuels
words were reliable. Consequently, Samuel was
recognized as a prophet who spoke the true word
of the Lord. But dont get the idea that Samuel
could predict anything he wanted to and God was
obligated to make it happen. The sentence really
means that Samuel learned to listen to God (1 Sam.
3:9-10). God expects us to listen just as reverently
and faithfully as Samuel did.

Dado que Samuel escuchaba fielmente al Seor,

reverencia.
rLos lderes, como todos nosotros, no son inmunes a la
tentacin y caen en pecado. Necesitan nuestras oraciones
tanto como nosotros necesitamos las suyas.

Since Samuel was faithful to listen to the Lord, his
reputation as a prophet spread throughout the land.
The news spread from Dan to Beer-sheba [bee ehr-
SHEE buh] that Samuel was a confirmed prophet of
the Lord. This meant that Samuel was a trustworthy
prophet. At Shiloh, the Lord continued to appear
to Samuel and He revealed Himself by His word.
As a result Israel accepted Samuels word (4:1). No
longer was a word from God rare and uncommon.
Through Samuel, prophetic vision had returned
to guide Israel. (See 3:1.) When leaders fail, God
will raise up new servants to speak His word. If we
listen, we can still hear the voice of a faithful and
trustworthy servant even in the midst of a confusing
church world.
Bible Passage Truths
rGod desires that His people serve Him faithfully,
respectfully, and reverently.
rLike all of us, leaders are not free from temptation and do
fall into sin. They need our prayers as much as we need
the prayers of others.
rA sacred trust isnt just about ministry. God wants us to
be faithful in our marriages, raising our children, being
parents, and serving as faithful witnesses in a confusing
world.
rViolating a sacred trust displeases God and brings His
judgment upon us. God does not deal with all sins in the
same way. But we can be assured that God will act, and
His ways are always good.
rIf we fail to serve Him, God will find faithful servants
to carry out His will. People may let us down, but God is
still in control. Our confidence remains in Him, and we
must listen for His word.
