Definition
This procedure does list the standard specifications and describes the procedure during the
hydrostatic pressure test of the component at LESER and its documentation.
The following definitions are considered in this LWN:
EN ISO 4126-1
The hydrostatic pressure test is to obtain proof of the pressure resistance of the valve components
against internal pressure. The hydrostatic pressure test belongs to the manufacturing inspections
of safety valves.
ASME Section VIII, Division 1, Part UG
Pressure Relief Devices UG-125, GENERAL (a)
(4) Unless otherwise defined in this Division, the definitions relating to pressure relief
devices in Section 2 of ASME PTC 25 shall apply.
ASME PTC 25 , Pressure Relief Devices, Section 2- Definitions and Description of Terms:
2.4 Parts of Pressure Relief Device

of the valve assembly and has provision(s) for connecting to the primary and/or secondary
pressure source(s).
bonnet: a component of a direct spring valve or of a pilot in al pilot-operated valve that supports
the spring. It may or may not be pressure containing.
cap: a component used to restrict access and/or protect the adjustment screw in a reclosing
pressure-relief device. It may or may not be a pressure-containing part.
nozzle: a primary pressure-containing component in a pressure relief valve that forms a part or all
of the inlet flow passage.
bellows: a flexible pressure-containing component of a balance direct spring valve used to prevent
changes in set pressure when the valve is subjected to a superimposed back pressure, or to
prevent corrosion between the disk holder and guide.

main relieving valve: that part of a pilot-operated pressure relief device through which the rated
flow occurs during relief.
pilot: the pressure-or vacuum-sensing component of a pilot-operated pressure relief valve that
controls the opening and closing of the main relieving valve.
dome : the volume of the side of the unbalanced moving member opposite the nozzle in the main
relieving valve of a pilot- operated pressure relief device.
2.7 Operational Characteristics of Pressure Relief Devices
Pressure-containing member: a component which is exposed to and contains pressure.
Primary pressure: the pressure at the inlet in a pressure relief device.
Secondary pressure: the pressure existing in the passage between the actual discharge area and
the valve outlet in a safety, safety relief, or relief valve.
Application
At LESER the hydrostatic pressure test will be carried out on each pressure bearing component.
Purpose
The hydrostatic pressure test is a procedure to prove pressure resistance of the valve components
against internal pressure.
Realisation at LESER
A comparison of all standard specifications for the hydrostatic pressure test is shown in table 1.
LESER carries out the the hydrostatic pressure test in accordance with the specification with
highest requierements:
Attention must be paid to the following rules:
All pressure bearing components must be tested with the test pressure which has to be at
least the 1.5fold of the approved nominal pressure Ptest = 1,5 x PN
Concerning components are among others body, bonnet, cap, full nozzle
Whereas bonnet and cap must be tested with 1,5 x PN, Outlet
If there are different pressure ranges (pressure range inlet > pressure range outlet) the
complete body must be tested with 1,5 x PN, Outlet
Furthermore the inlet must be tested with 1,5 x PN, Inlet
Generally in accordance with the specification the components of the safety valve may be
tested separatly.
This specification allows for bodies with full nozzle the following procedure:
The full nozzle must be tested with 1,5 x PN, Inlet
The complete body must be tested exclusively with 1,5 x PN, Outlet because in this case the
inlet is not pressurised directly with PN, Inlet

1) the applied stress under hydrostatic test conditions does not exceed 50% of the
allowable stress; and
2) the part ist not cast or welded.
b) Testing may be performed pneumatically at a pressure of 1.25 time the desing pressure of
the part. Pneumatic testing can be hazardous; it is therefore recommended that special
precautions be taken when conducting a pneumatic test.
c) Testing may be done in the component or assembled condition.
d) When the valve is designed for discharging directly to atmosphere, the valve components
downstream of the valve disk are exempt from hydrostatic testing.
e) Valve components downstream of the disk an fully contained within the body are exempt
from hydrostatic testing.
f) These tests shall be conducted after all machining and welding operations on the parts
have been completed.
g) There shall be no visible sign of leakage.

7.2
Test pressure
The test pressure has to be at least the 1.5fold of the approved nominal pressure at room
temperature.
Table 14.1 determines the test pressure values for each pressure bearing component.
7.3
Test period
The test pressure must be applied and held sufficiently long so that a visual inspection of all
connections and seals is possible, whereby at least the times specified in Section 14.2 must be
complied with. For tests on the outlet side of the seat, the testing time is oriented around the
pressure and size of the outlet defined in Section 14.1.
Test procedure
The hydrostatic pressure test generally will be carried out after all processing have been
completed.
At API bodies the hydrostatic pressure test will be carried out before drilling of drain hole.
The valve body/body of the primary fitting must be pressurised from the inlet side to the seat with
test pressure that corresponds to 1.5 times the maximum pressure recommended by the
manufacturer for which the valve/pilot operated safety valve is designed.
The outlet side of the body is tested hydraulically with 1.5 times the maximum backpressure
specified by the manufacturer for which the valve is designed. This pressure may be below the
value that is specified by the pressure stage of the flange at the outlet.
During the test the body has to be bled to ascertain it is completely filled with water and to remove
any enclosed air. The external walls of the body have to remain dry during the test.
The test pressure determined in table 14.1 has to be applied on the testing media.
The test pressure has to be retained for the test period determined in table 14.2. After a visual
inspection of all connections and seals the body has to examined for tightness.
During the pressure test the body may not be exposed to any impacts, e.g. by tapping with a
hammer.
Acceptance criteria
The tested parts must not have any leaks. There must not be any visible leakage through an
outside surface of the body.

The test pressure, duration of pressurisation and acceptance criteria must correspond to the
definition for hydrostatic pressure testing.
Pneumatic pressure testing will be performed by LESER in the assembly process, on the assembly
test bench for pilot.
The risks arising during pneumatic pressure testing must be taken into consideration and
reasonable precautions taken. The operators guide for the assembly test bench and the work
instruction must be respected meticulously.
The following important factors must be observed in particular:
- No one may be in the immediate vicinity while the pressure is increasing.
- The component parts should only be subjected to closer inspection when the pressure
increase is finished.
- No component part (pilot body) on which pneumatic pressure testing is being conducted is
to be subjected to any type of impact stress.
11 Qualification of personnel
The testing personnel should be qualified by its expertise, professional experience and physical
abilities to carry out the above mentioned test procedure in an expertly manner.
