Triumphant Countdown to 400

AT AROUND 8:00 in the evening last January 27, people have gathered around the UST Grandstand to watch the Quadricentennial Countdown Celebration. Many students, parents and even children went to witness the fireworks display that will happen at exactly 12 midnight. There were two large LCD screens situated at the left and right sides for the audience. The people found their comfortable places by lying down the grass while others put some papers and cartons. There were celebrity alumni like radio DJ Mr. Fu and showbiz talkshow host John Lapus who came to congratulate UST in its 400th year of existence. They also shared some of their experiences while in the university. One very significant thing that happened that night was the presence of alumni who are above a hundred years old including Amadea Medina, the oldest living Thomasian. There were also amazing performances from Mr. Pure Energy, Gary V. and the Pop Princess, Sarah Geronimo. It is evident from the faces of the audience that they were enjoying the show. They were very alive during the performances. They were even responding to the

Unending Grace commemorated during the Quadricentennial Week

By MA. LAARNI S. MALLARI MARK M. UNGSON

ON THE OCCASION of the 400th founding anniversary of the Univesity of Santo Tomas, the UST Santisimo Rosario Parish Church was declared a Jubilee Church and its entrance, the Jubilee Door. Representatives read the Apostolic Penitentiary stating that plenary indulgence will be given to those who will join the Univer-

sitys sacred rites, ceremonies and activities in the celebration of its Jubilee as long as they comply with the conditions required namely sacramental confession, Eucharistic Communion and prayers offered for the intentions of the Pope. They also read a decree declaring that a faithful can also receive the Papal Blessing even if they are not physically present during the celebrations because of

valid reasons and if they follow the sacred activities through television or radio broadcasts. Following this blessing was a mass officially opening the Universitys Quadricentennial Week last January 24, 2011. The mass was led by Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales. In his homily, he reminded the people about how important the door means to everyone

especially that of the university since this door represents the people who entered and left the dark alleys of ignorance and witlessness to enter the Universitys light of wisdom and intelligence through something it can share best, education. The Cardinal also noted the venerable members of the Thomasian community who have contributed a lot to our country and society.

On the 28th of January, the University celebrated another sacred rite as thanksgiving for the successful celebration of its 400th Foundation Anniversary. It was led by Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski, representative of Pope Benedict XVI who was unable to join in USTs Quadricentennial celebrations. Have you ever wondered how newspapers are made and how they are produced? Last February 25, 2011 we, Freshmen Journalism students explored the Manila Bulletin in Muralla cor. Recollectos, Intramuros, Manila to find out the answers. At the beginning of the tour, we were lead to the main entrance of the said corporation where we saw the Manila Bulletins name, a replica of a rare 15th century printing machine, and also their other other publications like magazines which feature sports, fashion, cuisine, pets, and others to tabloids (Tempo and Balita) and their Panoramas. We then proceeded in an audio visual room which

Their publication of news resumed on 1946 and they transferred their office in Intramuros, Manila after 10 years. On

1965, the newspaper started to print Sunday issues and after 3 years, they published their first Panorama, which still continues as a Sunday insertion of their newspapers today. The Manila Daily Bulletin experienced hardship during Marcos regime and was shut down due to his proclamation of Martial Law but reopened after 2 months having a new name, The Bulletin Today. On 1980, they created their first tabloid and on 1986, they changed their name as The Manila Bulletin which we are familiar with. In 1994, they had their first colored printing of news papers, and then decided to expand thus creating magazines. First Years First Exposure Trip

It is the true nature of mankind to learn from mistakes, not from example. -Fred Hoyle Sometimes people need not experience things to learn, we just need to learn from others experiences. This is what I discovered when we had this exposure trip in the New Bilibid Prisons for our subject Sociology 101. He made the worst mistake of his life when he killed a man who was allegedly courting his wife. At first he was brought to the Maximum Security Camp, but after behaving well, he was transferred to the Medium Security Camp. He had a wife and two daughters whom he had never seen after he was imprisoned. After a few

years he met a teacher who taught him how to continue hoping and believing that there is still life after all the challenges that are coming into his life. And now after 17 years of being in prison and studying the course of marketing he is hoping to be given parole or be out maybe in three years time. This exposure trip made me and my fellow Thomasians break the stereotypical view of prisoners, because of this trip we learned that there is more to inmates than what we see

through the different media. Inside the camp they study from high school to different courses in the college -, they develop different talents that they use in entertaining not only visitors but they also sometime visit different places to perform they even performed in the UST Medicine Auditorium and in the Malacaan Palace and they also make many merchandises to be sold to visitors as their souvenir. Though the trip was cut short because of an

Freshmen Journalists tour GMA Network

By MATTHEW BERNIE D. ZATE

Excited on what they are about to discover, the freshmen journalism students held their first GMA Studio Tour on the 25th day of January. In front of the GMA networks stands the Castillejo Monument which is composed of two muses and a man ascending in spiral with one another. The man holding a lightning and a torch represents GMAs innovative technology through modern science. The two muses were holding a script and a globe respectively. The script represents the Philippine culture while the globe represents the networks worldwide audi-

ence made possible by the GMA Pinoy TV. The network has 7 studios but only 4 of them were shown in the tour namely studio 2, 3, 6 and 7. Studio 2 is the networks second to the smallest studio. Its main newscast is 24 Oras and Saksi. The studio is composed of 6 projectors that are responsible for the background filming and 2 on- screen projector. Meanwhile, Studio 3 is the home studio of QTV News and Public affairs. It is also the studio where Unang Hirit, Imbestigador and Tonight with Arnold Clavio are being filmed.

The second to the largest studio of GMA, Studio 6, measuring 638 sq. m is where Show me The Manny, Comedy Bar and Love ni Mister, Love ni Misis is being filmed. Studio 7 is the largest studio of GMA. It is where the Election 2010 Coverage was held and is also the home studio of the Sunday noontime show, Party Pilipinas. This studio is 1020 sq m and can accommodate 600 people. Over all, these freshmen journalists had encountered the glimpse of what they will be as the future watch-dogs of this country.

UST, declared as Asias oldest university at 400 years of unending grace

By JELLY LUSTRE

THIS YEAR MARKS the 400th year of the oldest existing university in Asia, the University of Santo Tomas (UST), which caters to the worlds largest population of students studying in a single campus on a 21.5-hectare of land at the heart of Manila. With a bequeathed amount of 1,500 pesos on July 24, 1605, the church official was eventually able to erect a seminarycollege, dubbed as Colegio de Nuestra Seora del Santisimo

on 1999. On 2000, it celebrated its centennial year and on the following years, it developed more by having its own website where the access of new is easier. It also stretched its publication from different provinces, creating the Liwayway and the Bisaya. Last year, the newspaper expanded its use of technology by producing the countrys first 3-D issue. The Manila Bulletin could also be viewed online through its own iPad and iPhone applications. After the Audio Visual presentation, we went to the place where their computerized system can be found. It is the place was where the creation, production and distribution of the paper were done. We were given a chance to ask questions

and learned a lot from it. We now know that they release 250,000 copies of newspaper during weekdays and 300,000 copies during weekends. In one hour, they can create 25,000 copies of newspaper thru the use of their machines. They dont use recycled paper and they use imported ink for printing. With all those said, The Manila Bulletin continues its service since 1900 up to the present by showing what current news is for everyone. The tour helped us a lot for appreciating what our course really is. It showed us that behind every news, there are many procedures to be done before it is considered as such.

USTs 800-millionpeso sports complex

PART OF THE UNIVERSITYS infrastructure modernization is the construction of an P800million, four-storey gymnasium capable of seating 5,792, designed by Thomasian architects Jos Pedro Recio and Carmelo T. Casas. The construction is now in full swing after university officials, led by Fr. Rector Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., led its groundbreaking ceremonies. Replacing the original UST Gymnasium and the old Engineering Sports Complex, the construction of the 800-million-peso UST Sports Complex began after the Vatican gave its "blessing" to the project. It is set to be inaugurated on August 15, 2011. It will stand on what used to be the Engineering Sports Complex, basketball courts, and the adjacent football field. It will house training areas for gymnastics, aerobics, taekwondo, judo, table tennis, fencing, and badminton at its ground floor. The Philippine Government, of course, cordially recognizes the universitys valuable contributions by having it as the countrys first and only educational institution declared as a National Cultural Treasure. In fact, President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" C. Aquino joined the celebration of UST's unending grace. He congratulated the Thomasian Community. All Thomasians were so proud that they are part of the Asia's oldest university with the title of being the Pontifical, Royal and Cathlolic University. It must be noted that the Order of Preachers, also known as the Dominicans, owns until now the university. That was why the college carried those titlesDominicans are known to espouse devotion to the Blessed Virgin through the Holy Rosary, while Saint Thomas Aquinas is the foremost Dominican.

He also added that they have decided to make a field mass demo for a change in their annual celebration of IPEA week. Students in ball games did Sport Mimetics as they form the acronym IPEA. Fitness students amazed the audience with their domino effect as they performed the basics of physical activity while those enrolled in folk dance revived the traditional dance by our ancestors. Second to the last performers were the arnis students wherein almost 1000 students performed the different sinawalis. And last but not the least, social dance students gave a different aura from each dance whether Cha-cha, Boogie or Tango. A I S HA K HA D I J A D . CAGUIAT
