BUY LOCAL WHENEVER AND WHEREVER YOU CAN. THINK LOCAL FIRST AND HELP YOUR COMMUNITY THRIVE. BUYING LOCAL IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, YOUR NEIGHBORS AND YOUR COMMUNITY.... Goodales
HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY:
Buying Local Means 73% of Spending Stays in Your Community Buying local isnt just about shopping at local craft fairs a few times a year. It is about keeping as much of your hard earned money recirculating in your community where it will benefit you and your interests. Local products and services exist in every category of business in nearly all regions of the country. Nearest provider ends up translating to least expensive provider in the long run if we look at all the costs. Always Buying Quality Used Furniture 3 Generations and Over 71 Years In Business! New & Used Furniture, Antiques & Appliances 51 Feeder Street, Hudson Falls Mon. - Fri. 9-5 Sat. 10-4 747-0520
Furniture
This graphic is from and links to the most often sited study that shows how local spending stays in the community and supports local community functions. It is sort of like your blood or oxygen supply, communities have to take in money and recirculate it through the lifeblood of the local economy or the local economy dies, it is just like if we dont get enough oxygen for the blood to circulate, we die. Short term savings are very enticing. Money in your pocket jingles nicely. But less jingle can translate to the wonderful sound of flipping through crisp bills later on. We as a nation seem to have forgotten this. The notion of investment has become tainted and intertwined with speculation as the later has come to overpower what was once understood to be the cornerstone of a sound personal and national economy. Saving and putting your resources, however meager, behind processes and products you believe in is an entirely different beast than gambling. One of the most often used arguments concerning buying local is in regard to purchase of produce. Locally grown fruits, vegetables, meats and poultry provide an opportunity for shoppers to investigate and become familiar with how the products are grown, nurtured and brought to market. There is far less processing involved when the producers can sell direct to the consumer-less packaging, less handling, fewer chances for serious contamination. So, the monetary aspects are important reasons to buy local, and so are the environmentals.

Local Boy Scout wins Neudecker Achievement Award Darwin Honsinger was the first winner of the Neudecker Achievement Award. This award was created for a boy scout in Valley Falls Troop 49 by Don and Ellen Neudecker, owners of Neudecker Realty in Brunswick. The award includes a summer camping scholarship. The winner of the award is the scout with the highest overall achievement in Boy Scouting in the past year. The criteria for this scholarship include: merit, attendance, participation and Scout spirit. Darwin joined Boy Scout Troop 49 in March 2010. He earned the rank of Scout when he entered since he had earned the award of Arrow of Light while in Cub Scouts. He quickly earned his Tenderfoot rank on 11-20-10 and the rank of 2nd class in March 2011. He attended 2 weeks of Summer Camping @ Rotary during 2010 in which he earned Honor Scout during both weeks. Darwin has only missed one meeting and attended all of the troops outside activities. His Scout Spirit was demonstrated by earning 8 merit badges in a short time and another is in progress. Congratulations Darwin!

A NEW FIRE STATION IS BEING PLANNED FOR THE SALEM VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INC. ON NYS RTE 22 SALEM, NY. We currently have 4 fire trucks, of which 2 fire trucks are housed in a 1850 building that the volunteers own and it is way to small to serve our needs and the other 2 fire trucks are housed in a building that is owned by the Village of Salem. With this current set-up and the way that the fire dept operates this is costing the taxpayers more money because we have to have turnout gear in both buildings, double utility bills, etc. If we had 1 building we could house all 4 trucks together, have all of our PPE together, eliminate duplication of utilities and etc. With the new building when its time to order a new fire truck then we can spec one out that meets the needs of the communities that we protect and serve and meet the fire department needs. The bay area would be 4624-4900 sq ft in size compared to the current 800 sq ft and the meeting area would be 2912-3000 sq ft in size. Neither of the current buildings can be remodeled or expanded because of site restrictions and we are trying to be proactive now and provide a facility that will allow for future growth.Roughly 15yrs ago the fire department formed a new building committee to explore ideas of building a new firehouse and since then there has been a lot of talk and NO forward progress. The membership wants a new firehouse just like the people in the community. We are in the process of starting a capital fundraising campaign for our new firehouse. The fire department has $50,000.00 set aside already to be put towards the estimated $400,000.00 cost of the new building. We need to raise $200,000.00 before we start phase one of the construction project. We all know that there is a very limited economic base within our fire protection areas and people dont have the resources to go out and pay the extra taxes that it would take for a bond measure. As soon as we reach our goal and funding is secured we will start building. With in-house helpers and people who are willing to help out we can also save on other costs and reduce the overall costs even more. Our goal from start to completion would be 3-6 months. The new building would also be able to hosts meetings, gatherings, and community events something that has been missing from the Salem community since the old American Legion burnt some 20plus yrs ago. We have looked at applying for grants but with all of the legal obligations that are attached to a grant for a new building the price tag would probably more than double, so we want to raise monies through fundraisers. The new building would also be equipped with a new generator in case of power outages. We need to be self sufficient in case a disaster strikes. So please help us out and if you make a donation label it new firehouse. We are a 501(c)3 not for profit. If you have any questions contact: Steven Saunders President @ 518-854-7516 and leave a message or send an email to salemfd4434@yahoo.com. THE SECOND ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT THE SALEM AREA VAN ENDEAVOR (SAVE) will be held on August 13 at the Ondawa Greens Golf Course. Cosponsored by the Salem Rotary Club and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will offer two tee times: 8:00 am followed by lunch at noon; or 1:00 pm with dinner at 5:00 pm. The cost is $50 per person which includes either lunch or dinner. Lunch or dinner tickets alone are $20. Prizes will be awarded. Space is limited, and participants are encouraged to register early. SAVE is a community service providing transportation for Salem Area senior citizens and others without transportation to grocery shops and to other local destinations at no charge. Ken White, a volunteer driver, makes several trips each week. The tournament provides funds for operating the free service. Last year forty golfers enjoyed beautiful weather and helped support this worthwhile cause, raising over $2,100. For more information about the tournament, contact Rose Ann Savage at 854-9339. To reserve a spot on the van, call 854-3558.The Salem Area Chamber of Commerce was organized to develop, encourage, and protect the commercial, professional, financial and general business interests of the Salem area. Its purpose is also to promote the general welfare of the community, to extend and promote trade and commerce, and preserve and protect the industrial, agricultural, historical and cultural interests of the area.

A total of 945 undergraduate students achieved the criteria required for WPIs spring 2011 Deans List.
