Plagiarism and other unfair practices are a problem for International students?

Introduction United Kingdom is considered as the oxford of the east of international students for pursuing their education. For the past few years the education has gained a significant level among the students from Asian countries like Pakistan, Maldives, China, Japan, India. As in the developing country the extent to which the student can access the information is very limited and students never go an extra mile in gathering, researching information. Developing countries requires a lot of money to have a better educational system to be set up. Students from other countries invest in the developed countries for education. In India the education system is teacher centric and is more of book knowledge where as in the developing countries the education system adopted is research based. When students from developing countries complete their education from the best universities abroad get a better job opportunity make more money to have a better living. As per the data released by the border agency stating about the number of international students entering the county for education is massive. The international students think that the education system in United Kingdom is same as in India and because of which they become the victims of plagiarism. The education system in the United Kingdom is based on more research, referencing and gathering information. In the UK universities the work is all

2 practical based where in the individual have to do an in depth research and more of practical assignments. This kind of education helps the students in developing themselves and also preparing them in respecting what other have researched before. Many times when students from other countries come to study in the UK , initially dont understand the education system which is adopted and end up using other researchers information or copy the information from the internet and present

it in their name and there by become the victims of plagiarism. Unfair practices is treated as a serious offence in the UK and may also lead to the termination of the candidate from the university. There are a lot of reasons which can be taken into consideration as to why students plagiarize. According to (Hart and Friesner, 2004) the major reasons because of which students plagiarize are as follows y Students feel that the deadlines come quickly than expected y The topic that they are researching make them over whelming y Why to produce a new analysis rather than manipulate the existing analysis or research done by the previous researcher. y Poor planning not being aware of the work involved in the research topic y Being confused and not having a clear picture about the expectations.

According to (Cadman, 1997) many students hold a good percentage throughout the academic year in their own country, where as being a part of the UK University they struggle to get through the examination. International students after entering

3 the UK start searching for part time jobs to make some good money for their better living and lose the focus on the assignments and end up plagiarizing.

According to (Ninnes et al, 1999) Education has become more diverse and there is a stern competition between the universities. Every university wants its reputation to be the best as they ranked based on the grades and reputation. International students are given proper instructions how to go about writing the assignments

with proper referencing and doing an in depth research about the subject. Students from India appear for the examination by going through the notes which is provided to them by the lecturer and dont take an initiative in doing a research and finding out more information about the subject. According to (Scollon, 1995) there are various social and political factors along with cultural differences that leads to plagiarism. The education system in which the student was earlier also varies with the western universities. There is a lot of difference in the approach towards the topic between the local and the international students. Plagiarism is a wakeup call for students when they are doing their assignments. According to (Walker, 1998) plagiarism is unacceptable in the academic institutions and outside as well. The lecturers take a lot of time out explaining in detail to the students as to what exactly plagiarism is and what are the ways to avoid it. Lectures ask the students to make a draft before submitting the final

4 assignment so that the feedback can be given and the students can continue with the changes. It is been observed that when students enter the country they are more engrossed in searching for a job and pay more importance to work than studies. Because of the

lack of time students pay money to other individuals and get their assignments done. The third party who is doing the project for the students may not have a proper picture as to what are the key requirements and information that is needed in the assignment. When the student submits the assignment he becomes the victim of plagiarism. According to (Neville, 2007) there are four different types of plagiarism.  Falsification- means taking the help of other individuals work with his consent and presenting it in our name.  Collusion- copying the assignment of an individual without his consent and presenting it in our name is called as collusion.  Cheating- this takes place normally when the students are giving a written examination. The information which is written will be exactly the same as it is copied from another individual.  Impersonation- impersonation was on a high scale in India. What it exactly means is student 1 is appearing for the examination on behalf of student 2.

Students use a lot of websites as search engines for their assignments. The most common search engines are Google, Google scholar, Emerald. When the

5 information is taken from these websites there has to be a proper referencing like the name of the website, the web address and which year the site was created. If the plagiarism is between 1 to 20% it is acceptable by the universities. If it goes beyond 20% but the work is genuine then the professor will take a call in accepting the assignment if he finds it genuine. Beyond 20% gives the impression that the individual has not spent enough time in researching and has not used his own views in writing the assignment. There is a software which is introduced to check if the work submitted by the individual belongs to him or not. The name of the software is Turn-it-in, it is a well known software and is used by all the universities across the UK. There is a individual password and user id which is created by the college for every student. After completing the assignment when the student wants to submit his work to the lecturer he in to Turn-it-in software and upload the assignment. After few minutes the software shows the student as to how much of information he has copied without referencing. Then the lecturer will check the information provided in the assignment by the student and decides whether he has answered to all the questions and then approves it with a grade mark.

Example1 Original Resource The accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activities will change the climate by enhancing the natural greenhouse effect, leading to an increase in the Earths average surface temperature. This warming may be partially offset in certain regions where air pollution leads to high concentrations of small particles in the atmosphere that block sunlight. Paraphrased but plagiarized The day to day human activities on the earth and the accumulation of green house gases in the atmosphere is changing the climate which in turn is affecting the natural green house effect. There is an increase in the surface temperature on the earth which in turn is increasing the air pollution and is leading to the collection of small concentrated particles in the atmosphere that is blocking the sunlight.

The first paraphrasing was plagiarized because the content which was taken from the main source was not acknowledged. When the data taken from the source is not acknowledged it results as plagiarism.

Example 2 Original Resource The automobile revolutionized the American way of life. The earliest significant change was for farming families, who were no longer isolated. The automobile enabled them to drive to towns and cities comfortably and conveniently. Another important change was that people had the freedom to live and work wherever they wanted. In fact, people could work in a busy metropolitan city and drive home to the quiet suburbs. The final major change brought about by the automobile was the building of superhighways,

8 Suburbs, huge shopping centers, and many theme parks such as Disney World in Florida.

The above example explains us the correct format as to how the original source needs to be acknowledged when the information is taken from the source. It also makes us understand how we can protect our work from plagiarism.

Conclusion I being an international student this research have helped me in understanding the education system of the United Kingdom. Plagiarism is not accepted by any universities across the UK. The main reason behind plagiarism is that students dont concentrate when the lecturer is providing the information as to how the assignment needs to be done. Students dont turn up to college as they make work as the priority by forgetting that they have come here firstly to complete their education. Even I believe that plagiarism is an unfair practice. If the international students go an extra mile in completing their research by avoid plagiarism they will prosper with flying colors.
