SADAQATUL FITR IS OBLIGATORY FOR EVERY MUSLIM

By Mufti Taqi Usmani

Sadaqat-ul-fitr is an obligation for every Muslim, male or female, who owns 613.35 grams of silver or its equivalent, either in the form of money, ornaments, stock-intrade, or in the form of some goods or commodities beyond one's normal needs. Every person who owns such an amount has to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr, not only on behalf of himself but also on behalf of his minor children. The prescribed amount of Sadaqat-ul-fitr is 1.75 Kilograms of wheat or its value in money. This amount is prescribed for paying Sadaqat-ul-fitr for one person only. If a person has some minor children, the same amount has to be paid on behalf of each one of them separately. The following points must be remembered concerning the payment of Sadaqat-ul-fitr. 1. Sadaqat-ul-fitr is obligatory for each individual adult male or female, and the relevant adult person himself is responsible to pay it. However, a husband is ultimately responsible to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr for himself and on behalf of his family: his wife and children. Otherwise, in the con-

text of an adult single, it is their duty to pay their own Sadaqat-ul-fitr or arrange with family members (eg their parents) to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on their behalf. 2. It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-ul-fitr is paid before performing the 'Eid prayer. It can also be paid before Eid day, but it is not advisable to delay it till after the completion of 'Eid prayer. However, if a person has failed to pay on time, he should pay it as soon as possible, whereby the obligation will be fulfilled. 3. The Sadaqat-ul-fitr is not necessary on behalf of a child who was born after the break of dawn on 'Eid day, nor is it necessary to pay Sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of a person who dies before the dawn of Eid day. 4. Sadaqat-ul-fitr should be paid only to a person who is entitled to receive Zakah. .

STRAIGHTEN THE PRAYER LINES

Straightening the lines in the prayer is a part for its completeness....

I cannot balance myself!!

Surely bros....you dont have long legs

No....bro!!

Your point of gravity gets displaced when attempting to fix the problem...!!

Wassalam Yassar Alamri

Cant you guys stand in one straight line?

How to stand in Salah (prayer)? 3 basic rules.... 1. Your legs should diverge to the line from your shoulder. 2. The back of your legs (heels) should be in one straight line (rather than the tip of the feet similar to what is prevalent...). 3. There should be no spaces between the legs.

Last issue, we discussed a second aspect (within Mustalah Al-Hadith) on which Ahadeeth are classified; a brief summary (which also integrates the first element of classification References to a Particular Authority that we reviewed last issue) is shown below:

Answer to question in last issue: Mauquf

Isnad SAHIH

Classification of Ahadeeth according to:

Interrupted Isnad

Links in the Isnad

Muttasil = Linked
Where the isnad of the hadith consists of an uninterrupted chain of narrators up to the person who spoke the matn (text) of the hadith

Muallaq = Hanging
Omission of the beginning of the isnad by a Muhadith (scholar of hadith) from his end

Mudal = Perplexing
There are 2 or more consecutive missing reporters in the isnad

Munqati = Broken
Break in the isnad anywhere before the Successor (ie latter generations)

Mursal = Hurried
Missing link between Successor and the Prophet SAWS

MuttasilMarfu

MuttasilMauquf

MuttasilMaqtu
Hadith #2:

MursalMarfu

MursalMauquf

To illustrate some of the above isnad types, here are a couple of hadith examples; Hadith #1: Muttasil

: == == : : : : ==

== == == : : . . : .

== == == == - : - - - - : .

Al Hakim==Abu Amr Uthman b. Ahmad al-Sammak al-Bagdadi==AlHasan b. Mukarram==Uthman b. Amr==Yunus b. Zaid==AlZuhri=='Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik narrated: Ka'b demanded his debt back from Ibn Abi Hadrad in the Mosque and their voices grew louder till the Prophet SAWS heard them while he was in his house. He came out to them raising the curtain of his room and addressed Ka'b, "O Ka'b!" Ka'b replied, "Labaik, O Prophet of Allah." (He said to him), "Reduce your debt to one half," gesturing with his hand. Kab said, "I have done so, O Prophet of Allah!" On that the Prophet SAWS said to Ibn Abi Hadrad, "Get up and repay the debt to him." (Sahih AlBukhari, Book 41: Loans, Payment of Loans, Freezing of Property, Bankruptcy, Number 600)

AlHakim==Muhammad b. Musab==AlAwzai==Shaddad Abu Ammar==Umm alFadl bint alHarith, who said: I came to the Prophet SAWS and said, I have seen in a vision last night as if a part of your body was cut out and placed in my lap. He said, You have seen something good; Allah Willing, Fatimah will give birth to a lad who will be in your lap. After that, Fatimah gave birth to alHusain, who used to be in my lap, in accordance with the statement of the Prophet SAWS. One day I came to him and placed alHusain in his lap. I noticed that both his eyes were shedding tears. He said, Jibril came to me and told me that my Ummah will kill this son of mine, and he (Jibril) brought me some of the reddish dust of that place (where alHusain will be killed).

Explanation for why this is a Muttasil hadith: AlHakims hearing from Ibn al-Sammak is well known, as is his from Ibn Mukarram; alHasans link with Uthman b. Amr and the latters with Yunus b. Zaid are known; Yunus is always remembered with alZuhri, the latter with the sons of Kab b. Malik whose link to their father and his companionship with the Prophet SAWS are well established.

Q. 2) In terms of the ISNAD of the above hadith: Given that Shaddad Abu Ammar never met Umm alFadl, and that Muhammad b. Musab is a weak (untrusted) reporter; what type of interrupted isnad does this hadith have? By Mostafa Amer

Q. 1) Is the above hadith Muttasil-Marfu, MuttasilMauquf, or Muttasil-Maqtu?

Sisters
and travellers in need. Whatever good you do, God is aware of it.'" (Surah AlBaqarah, Verse 215) After strengthening our faith during Ramadhan and gaining an insight into a life of hardship, it is time for us to uphold another of the five pillars of Islam zakat (alms giving). The word zakat essentially means purification and growth. This means that Islam acknowledges the dual nature of money it can be both a blessing and a curse and as human beings we all tend to make mistakes. Hence, giving money or a portion of what we have to the poor or needy is form of purifying ourselves and our belongings. At the same time, we are also helping our Muslim brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. As we can see in cases of war-stricken countries like Palestine not everyone has been blessed to live relatively comfortably in a peaceful country like us. Sisters, always remember that their test is also our test. Who better to help Muslims than other Muslims? Everything we have today has been given by Allah S.W.T., the Most Merciful and Most Generous . It is our responsibility to look after our earnings and belongings and use them wisely. spends generously in the path of Allah whereas a miser is one whose love of money keeps him from such spending even though he may be spending lavishly in other areas. Dont let that scare you though because it is only natural for many of us to fall into the second category. With our busy schedules it is much too easy to forget about others and just focus on our own needs and wants. It is never too late to contribute to charity or to your community but if you cannot afford it even a smile to another Muslim sister is considered as an act of charity. Dear sisters, the beauty of Ramadhan is ultimately the beauty of Islam. It is not impossible to capture the spirit of Ramadhan and carry it with us everyday. The choice is ours. I hope we now have a renewed sense of faith compared to about a month ago. Eid Mubarak sisters, see you next Ramadhan inshaAllah!

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SPIRIT OF RAMADHAN?

As I walk towards the library after an evening at the mosque, I began to understand that Ramadhan is a lot about learning. Learning how to discipline ourselves and control our desires instead of following our whims and fancies. Learning about our inner strength and saying No to distractions (this may ring a few bells for the sisters who attended Camp this year). Learning the importance of being thankful for everything the good and the bad because only Allah S.W.T. knows best. I also realised that Ramadhan is very much about purifying ourselves and our intentions in life. During this blessed month, we are required to fast and increase our ibadah (acts of worship) in the hope of increasing our taqwa (God consciousness, fear of Allah S.W.T.). Ramadhan has truly been a month of immense opportunities for us. But after all that we have experienced and worked hard towards for the past month where do we go from here? What have we really learned about ourselves and the message of Islam? And what can we do to carry on the spirit of Ramadhan that brings much barakah (blessing) in our lives and peace in our hearts? Islam is a beautiful religion and I believe that this is true for a myriad of reasons. However, one of the most prevalent ones is the fact that Islam connects humanity. We should never forget the importance of maintaining good relationships with each other for without them we would lose one of the most beautiful aspects of Islam. Most importantly, we should never underestimate the significance of a good deed small or big for only Allah S.W.T. knows its true value. "They ask you (O Muhammad) what they should spend in charity. Say: 'Whatever you spend with a good heart, give it to parents, relatives, orphans, the helpless,

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Charity is prescribed for each descendant of Adam every day the sun rises." He was then asked: "From what do we give charity every day?" The Prophet answered: "The "The case of a miser and a giver of doors of goodness are many...enjoining charity is similar to that of two persons good, forbidding evil, removing harm clad in armour from their breasts to from the road, listening to the deaf, their collar-bones. Every time the gen- leading the blind, guiding one to the erous person gives charity, his armour object of his need, hurrying with the expands, till it covers his finger tips and strength of one's legs to one in sorrow toes. He also said: "Your not." [Bukhari, Hadith 1352] smile for your brother is charity." (Fiqh -us-Sunnah, Volume 3, Number 98) Verily the generous person is one who
