This article could easily be used to relate to the larger picture of gender studies as a whole and is very relatable to most of its main tenets. Its deconstruction of the video in relation to various important social and political messages carries significant weight and meaning. It could easily be used in relation to the first article since both provide a thorough deconstruction of the videos most important scenes.

Setoodeh, Ramin. "I Want My Music Videos!." Newsweek 156.4 (2010): 52-53. Academic Search Complete. EBSCO. Web. 1 Nov. 2010. Ramin explores the popularity of Gagas music videos and evaluates what the causes may be. Additionally, the effectiveness of Lady Gagas messages as portrayed in her videos is critiqued. Also, the author discusses how the internet aids in Lady Gagas communication to her audience. Although there is not much I want to truly take away from this article, the one idea that I want to highlight in my paper is the concept that Telephone is a statement of female empowerment through murder and violence. This is made evident through both the opening prison scene and the concluding scene where Lady Gaga and Beyonce murder the evil man and even advance to kill everyone in the diner. This concept will serve as one of the main tenets of a body paragraph supporting the ideologies found in gender studies. Lorber, Judith. The Social Construction of Gender. The Social Construction of Gender. Sage Publications, Inc., 1990. Print. Judith Lorber outlines the concept that gender is socially constructed in this document. At the heart of her argument is the thought that males and females are in fact more similar than different, and that society is to the blame for the classifications of male and female sex and its imposition of gender roles. Additionally, she focuses on the role of gender in sports and professional careers.

This information will be very helpful in my analysis of Telephone in various ways. For example, at one moment of the video a prison guard states See, I told you she didnt have a dick. Right after saying this, the camera flashes to Lady Gaga and her genitalia is actually completely blurred out. Thus, she is saying that essentially genitalia doesnt matter in determining ones gender, but that it is very important when other people are attempting to label others supposed sex/gender. Additionally, the two prison guards that originally carry her into the jail are pictured as big, burly, masculine women. Lorber notes that traditionally society polarizes the desired characteristics for males and females and thus masculine looking women would not be attractive or acceptable. However, through their hyper-sexualization, Lady Gaga is showing that people who do not fit the traditional norms can be equally as appealing and attractive. Richardson, Diane. Conceptualizing Gender. Introducing Gender and Womens Studies. Third Ed. New York, NY: Palgrave MacMillan, 2008. Print. Diane Richardson addresses various concepts pertaining to the conceptualization of gender in this document. Such themes as the sex/gender binary, the construction of sex, and gender and sexuality are highlighted. Similar to Judith Lorbers writing, Richardson addresses how gender and sexuality finds much of its basis in society. However, she takes a less specific dynamic and broadens her views to a more objective level. In correlation to the many themes suggested by Lady Gaga in Telephone, Richardson questions the meanings of sex and gender in society as a whole. Through Lady Gagas effective use of lesbianism, transgenders, transsexuals, blurring, and conflicting gender characteristics, she is making statements that directly parallel many of the claims found in this document. It would be most beneficial for me to use this article from an intellectual standpoint in order to tie in the symbols and allusions found in the video to actual concepts found in gender studies.
