Small Patriotic Patchwork Handbag & Fabric Flower

Cutting Ruler (I used a 12 x 9) Rotary Cutter Iron 1/3 of Fabric A 1/3 of Fabric B Stabilizer 24 of Handle Organize red with white trim ribbon for ties

INSTRUCTIONS: Cut the Fabric

Page 2 of 8 4. You will then lift the darker material open to the seam and press again.

Cut (4) from Fabric A (yellow fabric here) @ 5 x 5 Cut (4) from Fabric B (black fabric here) @ 5 x 5 Cut (1) from Fabric A for long inside pocket on fold 5 x 11 Cut (1) from fabric A for small inside pocket on fold 4 x 6 Cut (2) from Fabric B @ 11 x 11 1/2 Cut (1) from stabilizer @ 11 x 11 1/2 Assemble 1. Take and sew (1) of each 5 x 5 from Fabric A and Fabric B along the short end 5 x 5 with a seam. Press seam to darker fabric.

2. Repeat this step (3) more times 3. Press the seams to one side on the darker material. Start by press the seam with both right side seams still together. 5. This will smooth the seam out nice and neat. 6. Sew together the strips you just created now on the long sides of each one. You will notice that your seams will be opposite of each other.

Patchwork Handbag 7. Now you will have your outside of the bag completed. 8. Now lay it wrong side down on your cut piece of stabilizer or you can use iron on stabilizer to give the bag stability. There are a couple thicknesses you can choose from lightweight to heavy weight. I prefer Heavy weight.

12. I first clip the corners.

9. I smooth the pieced piece on the stabilizer to smooth out any distortion or wrinkles and pin in place for sewing. I prefer to pin than to baste stitch. 10. Fold in half right sides together of Patchwork piece and pin in center on the sides and top part of handbag to hold in place while you sew.

13. Take a corner and folding it and creating a triangle. I measure it at 3 and then sew across once I mark it with my marking pencil.

11. Sew a - seam along each end of the bag leaving the top open. (be sure to use the same seam allowance for the lining of the bag).

16. Press the seams of each side open so that it does not bunch up when you assemble the inside.

14. Repeat the steps for the other side 17. You will now sew the Fabric Flower or any embellishment you will have on the outside of the handbag. 18. Cut two Nylon handles @ 12 each. I have taken and done some decorative stitching on the handle to match the Fabric. Play around with some scrap fabric and the decorative stitches you may have on your sewing machine.

Patchwork Handbag 19. You will now pin the handles in place. I use 2 inches from the top side of the handbag for placement of my handles on each side.

23. The pockets were cut on the fold of the fabric so now just turn them wrong side together and press. I do this so there is little shifting and I dont have to pin. 20. You are now done this part and can put aside while you assemble the lining of the handbag. 21. Take the two pieces of the lining fabric and sew them together at the bottom leaving a 3 inch opening for turning.

24. Sew around all 3 sides for the small pocket leaving a 1 opening for turning.

22. Now create the two inside pockets.

25. Clip the corners and turn. Press and sew a straight stitch to the top part of the pocket.

Page 6 of 8 28. You will now place the two pockets on the lining and sew in place.

26. The longer pocket is created just by sewing the bottom long edges and turning right sides out. 29. I sew the smaller pocket 3 up from the center of the lining and 2 from each side. 30. I sew the longer one in place 3 inches up from the center of the lining.

27. Sew a straight stitch on the top of the folded seam. 31. To get a straight stitch around the pockets I use the hemmer foot butted up to the fabric and move my needle over to were I want the stitch.

Page 7 of 8 33. Now that your pockets are in you will now assemble the lining like you did the outside of the handbag creating your corners. 34. Place the outside part of the bag inside the lining with right sides together.

32. Once the long pocket is also sewn in place I then fold the lining in half to give me the center point of the long pocket and stitch down the center to create two pockets.

35. Pin the ribbon in the center of each side to create your bag tie closers.

Page 8 of 8 38. I then press the top being careful not to iron the handles if I used nylon material as this will melt. 39. Line up the top of the bag in the matching with the hemming foot and sew a straight stitch all the way around

36. Pin top together and sew a straight stitch all the way around to close the top of the bag.

37. You will now pull the inside out from the bottom opening of the lining. Stitch the lining bottom opening closed either with a hand sewn blind stitch or a machine stitch. 40. You are now all done.
