RESIDENT PROFILE
It was a decision that would profoundly change their lives forever.

Linda and Ron Wangner

Linda and Ron Wangner were both born in New York City; Ron in Brooklyn and Linda in Manhattan. Ron spent his formative years in North Valley Stream and Linda lived a few miles away in Elmont. Both attended the same elementary school and high school. They finally met in their Junior year while warming up for track practice and started dating in 1964. Linda skipped her senior year, enrolled in City University of New York, Queens College and earned her B.A. and certification to teach Social Studies grades 712. Ron went on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering at The Cooper Union, also in New York City. They dated through college and married in 1969 after Ron graduated. Ron started a successful career with Exxon Chemical Company and Linda taught Social Studies at Lindenhurst High School for 37 years. Ron had a very productive career with Exxon working on various projects in Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Singapore. Linda earned her Masters Degree in Liberal Studies as well as a number of graduate certificates. Along the way, they welcomed their four children, Michael, Allison, Lauren and Ryan. Linda retired from teaching in June of 2004. In 2006, they came to Arizona with Lindas father to visit his brother (her uncle) Tony and his wife Barbara who had moved to the Phoenix area, and currently live in Sun City Grand. At the end of their visit, Barbara, who at the time worked for Pulte/Del Webb suggested they visit the models in a new development 15 miles to the west. Ron and Linda instantly fell in love with the little Oasis in the Desert called Sun City Festival. But Ron was still working and not yet ready to make the transition. In 2008, Linda and Ron returned to SCF with friends who were also looking for a winter place. In the process, Ron and Linda found a beautiful lot bordering the 5th hole with a nice view of the White Tank Mountains. They decided this would be where they would build their new home. It was a decision that would profoundly change their lives forever. They have been blessed with great neighbors and the opportunity to make many new and lasting friendships. Ron and Linda enjoy working out at the fitness center, playing golf and swimming. They also enjoy being part of the Gourmet Club and volunteer as resident ambassadors at the Sales Center. Linda is a Block Watch Captain and was recently appointed as the representative for the Desert Oasis neighborhood. Ron is now a volunteer for the Caring Neighbors organization. Along with other residents of Sun City Festival, Sun City Grand and Sun City West, they also enjoy being part of the Italian Heritage Club.

DIET SODA IS HARMLESS: More and more current research demonstrates how artificial sweeteners used in diet soda lead to food urges which are difficult to control. One such study found rats consumed more calories when they were fed artificial sweeteners prior to meals. Other research showed people who consumed three diet sodas per week were 40 percent more likely to be obese.

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S. Fitness & Wellness Director

EGG YOLKS RAISE CHOLESTEROL: We all know egg yolks contain dietary cholesterol. The difference lies in dietary cholesterol vs. serum cholesterol (the kind in your blood). In a review of more than 30 studies of egg consumption, no link was found between egg consumption and heart disease. And, eggs eaten at breakfast could decrease calorie consumption throughout the day. Saturated fat consumption, and not cholesterol, is more often linked to high serum cholesterol. BANANAS ARE THE BEST SOURCE OF POTASSIUM: Potassium helps keep nerves and muscles firing efficiently. Adequate potassium intake will help minimize the blood pressure-raising effects of sodium. Recommended daily intake of potassium is 6,800 milligrams. One medium banana contains 422 milligrams of potassium and about 105 calories. Lower calorie alternatives with about equivalent potassium are half a medium potato, five whole apricots, one cup of cantaloupe cubes, one quarter cup of sun dried tomatoes, or one full stalk of broccoli. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP IS WORSE THAN TABLE SUGAR: This is a long-debated issue. Both HFCS and table sugar are a 50-50 mix of fructose and glucose. The body really doesnt know any difference. The bottom line is either form in food is added sugar. And, added sugar is really the culprit. Ideally, a good practice is to minimize added sugar in any form. CHOCOLATE IS BAD FOR YOU: Cocoa is a plant-based food loaded with flavonoids. These flavonoids help increase blood flow and cause the release of feel-good hormones called endorphins. Cocoa also has a healthy kind of saturated fat called stearic acid which can increase HDL (good) cholesterol. Dark chocolate is the best choice because it contains a greater amount of cocoa and much less sugar than typical milk chocolate.
