2010 Annual Report

VOLUNTEERS PROGRAMS GRANTEES CONTRIBUTORS

Culli Damuth is surprised at the announcement that she is the recipient of the Foundations 2010 Spirit of Philanthropy Award. The 2010 Community Celebration was an evening of storytelling and recognition.

The Foundations Agency Endowment Partners stand at the Mid-Michigan Childrens Museum. Fifteen agencies each received a $10,000 challenge grant from SCF for raising funds to build their endowments.

More than 150 Saginaw County students were awarded nearly $168,000 in scholarships from SCF in 2010 at the Foundations annual Excellence in Education ceremony.

Renee Johnston, SCF president and CEO, stands next to the Jefferson One Building, the Foundations current home. The Foundation will move into a new, permanent home this fall at the historic Morley Building at 1 Tuscola in Saginaw. This will begin a new chapter of the Foundations story.

A True Story...
2010 was truly a year to reflect upon the past and present. These reflections allowed us to focus our attention on stories in the community that provided a strong message about the Saginaw Community Foundation. We were inspired to develop a marketing campaign around the idea that, Your Story is Our Story. This idea helped us to better communicate what we are and what we do in the community. Displayed on Page 3, youll find a few of the stories we used throughout the community to help us tell our message. As we flipped through pictures and old annual reports in preparation for the 2010 annual report, it was fun to see and read how some of our existing relationships came about. One of the most momentous pictures is of a $50,000 check being presented by representatives from the Junior League of Saginaw Valley to establish the Saginaw Community Foundation. Today, when we mention to the ladies of the League that the purpose of the Foundation has broadened over the years, they always comment that this was their wish and goal when they made the grant. Its nice to know that the Saginaw Community Foundation fulfilled their wish. Another relationship from the past that we are thankful for today is with the Sons of Italy fraternal organization. In October 1988, the Sons of Italy established a scholarship to promote education for Lodge 2456 members and their sons, daughters and grandchildren. Twenty-two years later, theyve given $50,000 in scholarships. Over the years, there have been some wonderful stories shared by the Sons of Italy and their appreciation for their relationship with the Foundation. On Page 5, you will read more on the scholarship. Today those stories continue. At the 2010 SCF Community Celebration we heard stories from grant and scholarship recipients, volunteers and donors. Those stories mean so much to us. Last year, 500 people benefited from the Michigan Community Foundation Tax Credit for contributing to an endowment fund at the Saginaw Community Foundation. The tax credit is an important tool for the continued growth of community foundations and permanent endowed funds for hundreds of non-profits like the Child Abuse and Neglect Council, READ, Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra, and Saginaw Future Inc. in our community. Even though the elimination of the tax credit will have an impact on our contributors, we know that impact is small compared to the large impact those contributions have had on endowment funds and our entire community. There have been times when we all have been in search of a good story to read for ourselves or a young child, or a story to tell to a family member or coworker. As youll see here, at the Saginaw Community Foundation, we have many true stories to share that will leave a lasting impact on our community.

The Saginaw Community Foundation is a central solution for charitable goals. Its a one-stop shop for identifying needs and gifting wishes. The seeds I plant today with my clients about SCF will help them fulfill their charitable goals in the future. David J. Abbs, CFP, CFS

Participating with the Saginaw Community Foundation as an Endowment Partner has been significant for the Frankenmuth Community Foundation. Not only have the challenge grants added to our asset base, they have caused us to stretch our fundraising efforts. The 2009 challenge grant program encouraged us to seek out deferred gifts, something not previously done by FCF. Karen Zehnder

The Saginaw Community Foundation has a pulse on the needs of the community. Its intimately involved in building and restoring Saginaw County. SCF has given me the opportunity to put resources in place to support the community. This is one of the most satisfying experiences one can find. Smallwood Holoman

Retired Chemist/Public Affairs, Dow Chemical Co. SCF Board Member

I have lived in Saginaw all my life. Its my home. The Saginaw Community Foundation has helped me give back to the community that has given to me. The investment it makes in the community is good for Saginaw County. Martin Stark

Grantmaking is at the center of the Saginaw Community Foundation. Our committees try to make our best judgment on allocating limited funds to the projects and agencies most likely to make best use of those funds. Its an investment we take very seriously. We probably take that more seriously than we do spending our own money.

f the Saginaw Community Foundation were a book, its founders would be the author. From the very beginning in 1984, it was their generosity and vision that scripted the Foundations future. The funds the founders established and the dollars they contributed are still used to meet todays needs and plan for tomorrows opportunities. Some of their funds were established for specific purposes; others to meet the most pressing needs of the current time. Each gift is a chapter in our story. The tale began in 1984, when the Junior League of Saginaw Valley made the first donation of $50,000, creating a foundation for Saginaw Countys future. The Junior League helped get the Foundation off the ground in hopes that it would become a substantial, lasting gift to the community. I cant say that anyone who served on that (Junior League funding allocation) group is surprised by the growth and the success of the Foundation today, said Janet Crane, a longtime Junior League member. Its scholarship program, the way theyve been able to bring groups together, the FORCE group that gets young people involved, not to mention the thousands and thousands of dollars theyve been able to distribute to worthy projects in the community it was designed to become what it is. The Stevens family has a long history of support for Saginaw County through the family business, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines. In 1989, the Stevens family extended their support for the community when they established an endowment fund with the Saginaw Community Foundation. The family had a strong interest in supporting organizational programs, activities and scholarships that directly impact youth. Through its donor advised fund, called the Stevens Family Fund, they have supported ventures such as the Hartley Outdoor Education Center, the Childrens Zoo at Celebration Square and the Boys and Girls Club. Lindsay (Stevens) Eggers, whose parents helped create the fund, said her family determines each year which local projects best align with their funding focus and will have a long-term impact on the community. Our relationship with the Saginaw Community Foundation offers us the opportunity to teach the next generation about the importance of philanthropy and how each individual can impact the communitys future, StevensEggers said. Another successful chapter in the Foundations history can be attributed to the members of the Sons of Italy Sacra Famiglia Lodge 2456, who established a scholarship endowment with the Foundation in 1988. An initial investment of $25,000 has more than tripled as members have continuously contributed to the fund through fundraisers and memorials, generating more than $50,000 in scholarships to lodge members and their families. Today, the fund annually provides $4,000 in scholarships and will continue to benefit future generations. This is a legacy we are leaving, said Dr. A. Michael

Manzoni, a representative for the fund. An investment for the future. For the adult children of Carl and Violet King, establishing the King Family Fund in 1988 met two very important objectives: It was a way to provide a permanent tribute to their parents and a way to give something back to the Saginaw community. Siblings Carl G. (C.G.) King, Rosalie King and Tom King chose to establish an unrestricted fund, freeing the Foundation board to determine where the monies are most needed each year. Were very interested in projects that go toward the betterment of the community and the Foundation has given consideration to that through the years, said C.G. King of King Communications Inc. Recently, the King Family Fund has helped the Mid-Michigan Childrens Museum and the YMCA, for example. King said the Saginaw Community Foundation is the perfect way for donations of all sizes to be combined to make a huge impact on the community. And even though Carl and Violet King have passed away, the gift made in their honor lives on. Weve gotten a lot of satisfaction from making the gift and seeing the money come back into the community, King said. I would encourage anybody whos in a position to help that the Saginaw Community Foundation is a good vehicle to do it through.

Hoyt Park returning to its glory days

Whats your fondest memory of Hoyt Park? Ice skating in the moonlight? Playing baseball with neighborhood buddies? A family picnic on a hot afternoon? In a way, thats how the Friends of Hoyt Park came to life local folks with great memories of this Saginaw park who wanted to return it to its former glory. With the help of community volunteers and donations, five baseball diamonds have been refurbished so that hundreds of children can now flock there to participate in the Christian Youth Fellowship baseball league and Saginaw YMCA youth t-ball. Dozens of adult softball teams play ball there each week, too. The Saginaw Community Foundation which has helped Friends of Hoyt Park since its 2008 inception is proud of its role in community initiatives such as this one. (SCF President & CEO) Renee Johnston was really the one who showed us how to put the whole thing together, otherwise wed still be twiddling our thumbs, said Larry Brethauer, president of Friends of Hoyt Park. Without being fortunate enough to align ourselves with the Saginaw Community Foundation, wed only be sitting on a small amount of money at this point.

New Dow Corning fund makes big difference

Whats the perfect word to describe the new donor advised funds created in partnership with the Dow Corning Foundation and Hemlock Semiconductor Group? Success. The Dow Corning Foundation created the new funding platform with the Saginaw, Bay and Midland community foundations in 2010 to provide grants to area organizations. By all accounts, their plan worked. The Donor Advised Funds had a tremendous first year with more than $126,000 invested right here in the Great Lakes Bay Region, said Kimberly Houston-Philpot, president of the Dow Corning Foundation. Due to the success of the pilot program, Dow Corning has pledged an additional $150,000 in 2011, with $50,000 held at each Foundation. All grant requests are reviewed by an advisory panel made up of employees from Dow Corning and Hemlock Semiconductor who then make recommendations to the three area community foundations on how to invest the money in the region. Through the Saginaw Community Foundation, more than a dozen grants were awarded from the Dow Corning Donor Advised Fund including: Freeland Community School Districts Biodiesel Fuel Cafeteria Waste Oil project: $2,000 Girls on the Run: $3,000 Saginaw Valley State University - Saginaw County Youth Leadership Expansion: $15,000 (regional grant) The funds allow the Dow Corning Foundation to accomplish its mission now and in the future. Through these funds, we invested in local and regional programs, increased employee awareness of community needs, and built a regional collaboration with the Saginaw, Bay and Midland area community foundations, Houston-Philpot said. Grant guidelines and instructions for submitting grant requests are available on the Saginaw Community Foundations website at www.saginawfoundation.org.

Seniors Make Big Impact on FORCE ...

Thanks to their hard work and dedication especially among the 13 graduating seniors FORCE is continuing to accomplish amazing things. FORCE, the Saginaw Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Committee, which is comprised of youth ages 12 to 21, gives its members an opportunity to volunteer their time and learn about our community's needs. Four of the six FORCE executive board members are graduating seniors, taking with them a combined 17 years of experience. In 2010, FORCE consisted of 43 youth representing 12 high schools across Saginaw County. They granted a total of $13,875 to six area nonprofits with the purpose of improving the quality of life for Saginaw County youth.

$2.1 Million Scholarship Fund Helps Saginaw County With College

Donald and Jacquelyn Hebert of Thomas Township fulfilled a promise that is helping Saginaw County students and their families pay for college. The late couples desire to help students finance their education led to the establishment in 2010 of the Hebert Memorial Scholarship, a $2.1 million fund that annually provides 33 non-need-based scholarships of $3,000 to graduating high school seniors and college students who have maintained a 3.0 grade-point average. The fund was established upon Jacquelyns death in 2008 to help students like Noel Marsden, a former student and neighbor of the Heberts. Noel was valedictorian of Swan Valley High School in 1992 and, despite his academic achievements, received little assistance from scholarships because he did not qualify for need-based funding. Sandi Marsden, Noels mother, remembers the day she told Jacquelyn Hebert about her sons honors and the frustration she felt because of the familys difficulty securing scholarships. When I told her (Jacquelyn) about the situation, she made a promise that she would start a scholarship for students like my son who worked hard and needed help paying for school, regardless of their financial need, said Marsden of Thomas Township. The Heberts, who were employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company, were active members of the Telecom Pioneers, an industry-related volunteer organizaMridha Foundation Teacher of the Year Endowment Fund NEW Mudd Family Historic Preservation Fund Tri-County Council NLUS Youth Program Fund Northwest Saginaw Optimist Fund Opportunities Industrialization Center Partners-in-Philanthropy Fund Pit & Balcony Endowment Fund Saginaw Township Playscape Endowment Fund Saginaw Public Libraries-Butman Fish Endowment Saginaw Public Libraries-Claytor Endowment Saginaw Public Libraries-Children's Services Endowment Fund Saginaw Public Libraries-Eddy Endowment Fund Saginaw Public Libraries-Hoyt Endowment Fund Saginaw Public Libraries-Wickes Endowment Fund Saginaw Public Libraries-Zauel Endowment Fund Saginaw Public Libraries Foundation Fund READ Association Endowment Fund George W. tion that has supported projects that include helping the disabled and fostering literacy. I am very impressed at the gift they established to benefit the community, but Im not surprised at all, Marsden said. The Saginaw Community Foundation was selected by Kim Gardey, the fund trustee and a friend of Jacquelyns, to administer the application process. It was very clear that Jacquelyn wanted to establish a scholarship to help students with circumstances that may make it difficult to attend college. She really valued the benefits of a college education, said Gardey of Saginaw Township. The Foundation was the perfect solution because of its ability to reach a large number of students in the community. Its a wonderful feeling to see this scholarship come to pass.

Alignment Saginaw is a Community Collaborative

Two years ago, the Saginaw Community Foundation worked closely with community leaders to identify a vehicle that would provide an opportunity for community members, organizations, business leaders, education leaders, and local officials to come together and address areas of concern in the community. Today, that vehicle is known as Alignment Saginaw. The purpose of Alignment Saginaw is to serve as the community collaborative for Saginaw County to improve the capacity of work by Alignment Saginaw members. Its mission is to prepare and mobilize data-driven and action-oriented opportunities that impact six key areas affecting Saginaw Countys quality of life: Intellectual and Social Development: School Readiness; Student Performance; High School Graduation Rate; Education Beyond High School; Teen Pregnancy; Juvenile Delinquency; Youth Development/Recreation Economy: Saginaw Business Index; Knowledge Economy; Per Capita Income; Poverty; Unemployment; Use of Job Improvement Resources; Home Ownership; Homelessness Health Lifestyles: Infant Mortality; Childhood Immunizations; Substance Abuse; Health Care Access & Coverage; Life Expectancy; Health Inequity; Health-Related Quality of Life; Mental Health; Disabilities Safety: Child Abuse and Neglect; Domestic Violence; Unintentional Injury Deaths; Violent Crime; Neighborhood Safety; Probation & Parole; Youth Crime; Suicide Prevention Environment: Indoor Air Quality; Outdoor Air Quality; Surface Water Quality; Groundwater Quality; Land Use Social Capital/Civic Engagement: Faith Based; Neighborhood Associations; Family Support & Advocacy With assistance from Saginaw Valley State University, a community report card has been developed to inform the community on how these six areas are being addressed. Saginaw Community Foundation

SCF Volunteer Trish Luplow

Two things amaze Trish Luplow the amount of good done by the Saginaw Community Foundation and just how few people know about it. I am constantly surprised by how little is known about this wonderful organization, said Saginaw Townships Luplow, a volunteer for the Saginaw Community Foundation for more than a decade. The Saginaw Community Foundation is privileged to have the volunteer support of so many talented people like Luplow who assist in improving our community. In 2010, more than 450 volunteers selflessly gave their time, talent and energy to numerous Foundation initiatives. These volunteers are ordinary people making extraordinary contributions and each one of them deserves our appreciation. Luplow is one of those unseen volunteers. This community volunteer joined the SCF Scholarship Review Committee in 2000 after the Saginaw County Lawyers Auxiliary, an organization she was part of, developed a scholarship at the Foundation. Luplow faithfully returns each year to assist the committee with scholarship-related needs. She joined the SCF Board of Directors in 2010 and is the Foundations Scholarship Committee Chair. Trish is truly an amazing individual, said Renee Johnston, president and chief executive officer of the Saginaw Community Foundation. We are fortunate to have her volunteer her time with SCF. Trish will never admit to the amount of time that she not only spends with SCF, but to the overall community through her time and service. Elsewhere in the community, Luplow serves as a Hidden Harvest Board of Trustee, a MOSTS reading mentor and participates on the United Way of Saginaw County Agency Review Panel. Luplow said since she first began with the Foundation 10 years ago, shes always been intrigued by its grassroots approach. Its really one-stop shopping for philanthropic needs. Its a great place for a donor to put their resources for the good of the community, she said. The Saginaw Community Foundation is Trish Luplow privileged to have so many individuals volunteer their time for us, Johnston said. Even though I dont have the opportunity to thank and recognize every single one of them personally, I want everyone to really understand that the Foundation appreciates what they do for us, she added.

We believe it is important that an organization be fiscally responsible and that the funds entrusted to its care be used as intended. The Saginaw Community Foundation takes our stewardship role very seriously. On this page, we have included a copy of our condensed financial statement, as well as a

breakdown of our grants and administrative expenses. Were very proud to note that our administrative expenses are consistently low, with less than 2 cents on the dollar going to administrative costs. If you would like to review a copy of the Foundations audit, please give us a call.
