need, but you cannot find it? Don’t worry anymore because this lesson will give you the background you
need to ask someone in Germany for a specific something that you need. With the following two
phrases, Wo kann ich… finden? (“Where can I find…?”) and the more advanced, Entschuldigung, können
Sie mir sagen, wo ich... finde? (“Excuse me, could you tell me where I can find...?”), you are able to express
what you are searching for. These phrases are very basic and work in every situation. Enjoy!

Quick Tip #1

German bars and pubs usually have both restrooms and a phone, so you can simply ask where to find a
bar. Be careful, while this is generally true, in small towns you had better ask for a public phone
separately because you won’t find them in some tiny beer bars. Once there, if you use any of the
services provided by the bar, please remember that it’s very polite to order something at the counter or
simply buy a coffee or a pack of chewing gum.

In Germany, you can find two types of phone booths, those which are coin operated and those which
you can only use with phone cards. While the coin operated ones had been more popular before the
Euro became the official currency, this changed after the currency change. Nowadays, you can only use
most phone booths with phone cards, which you can find in Germany at newspaper dealers or at
tobacco shops.
