Do not operate the gate/arm unless area around gate/arm is in full view. Never let children operate or play with operator controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate/arm. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE/ARM. Test the operator monthly (see STEP 7 Programming the current sensitivity). The gate/arm MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non-contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the operator. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
APPLICATIONS
The Apollo BA12ETL Barrier Arm Operator is designed to handle a barrier arm up to 16 feet in total length. Apollo Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. A 12 Volt sealed battery (33 ampere hour minimum) is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators can provide up to 200 operations in the event of
power outages. The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy (eliminating the need for costly trenching to remote entrances).
If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. The following table should be used as a guide for capacity of operation of operators only, additional options may reduce the the daily usage. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations. All solar panels and battery chargers are designed for use with a 12 volt battery.

PRE-INSTALLATION CHECKLIST
Verify that the proper operator has been selected for this application. Determine the general location of the operator, access controls, and solar panel (if used). 1. Is there a suitable location for the operator? 2.Can the solar panel (if used) be mounted in an unobstructed area facing south? 3. Will additional solar panel cable be required? 4. Is electricity available (if required)? Consider safety and access options. Recommend if needed. 1. Will there be chidren or animals in the area? 2. Are safety loops, edge switches, or photo eye detectors required? 3. How can the arm be opened in emergencies? 4. How will visitors enter and exit? 5. Will vehicles (and trailers) have sufficient room off roadway to operate access control devices such as keypads?
OPERATOR INSTALLATION
The BA12ETL is designed to be mounted to a 15x15 (minimum) concrete pad. Four 1/2 concrete anchor bolts are required for proper installation. PVC conduit should be in position prior to pouring the pad if remote access control devices or loops are to be used. The concrete pad should be a minimum of 12 below the ground level. Most installations will be on the left side (drivers side) of the driveway.
Set the BA12ETL on the concrete pad at a desired position. Using a 1/2 concrete drill bit, drill four holes using the pedestal base as a template. Install (4) 1/2 concrete anchor bolts and secure with washers and nuts.
Orientation
STEP 1. Determine which side of the driveway the operator is to be mounted. The factory units are set up to be installed on the left (drivers) side of the driveway as shown in Fig. A.

Various types and lengths of arms (up to 16 feet) may be used with the BA12ETL. The simplest and least expensive arm is the PVC downspout available at The Home Depot home improvement store sold in 10 foot lengths and may be easily cut down to any shorter size. A counter weight is not required for this type of arm.
Aluminum Extrusion
Aluminum and wood arms may require one or two optional counterweights depending on the length of the arm. As a general rule, any aluminum or wood arm over 10 feet should be counterweighted. 20 lb. Counterweight
POWER CONNECTIONS
A 12 volt sealed lead acid battery rated for 34 ampere hours is recommended for the BA12ETL. The battery may be recharged with a electrical battery charger or solar panel. A 6 amp automatic battery charger is sufficient for most applications. If solar charging is a requirement contact our customer service department at 800 226-0178 to help determine the solar panel size needed.
Connect the two ring terminals on the connector end of the cable to the battery. The battery charger or solar panel should be installed at this time. (RED is positive(+) and Black is negative(-)
Plug the main connector into the Master connector on the circuit board.
The operator is now activated. The current sense must now be programmed as shown on page 10. If the operator does not work, check the battery connections for proper polarity. If the connections are reversed, the REVERSE BATTERY POLARITY LED will be illuminated at the bottom center of the circuit board.
The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition may be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL inputs on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) should be opened and closed to reset the control board.
The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance. All limits should be set before beginning this procedure. 1. Press and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds and release. The STOP LED will blink indicating that the board is in learn mode. 3. Cycle gate/arm for 3-4 full cycles. The STOP LED will stop blinking indicating that the operator is now ready for normal operation 4. Test the auto reverse sensitivity to ensure maximum safety protection. The current sensitivity adjustment pot may be adjusted to decrease or increase sensitivity. Perform this procedure on a monthly basis to assure proper and safe operation.

EMERGENCY BYPASS
Applies battery voltage directly to motor to open gate (will not close gate) if control board fails. User must unplug before gate opens to maximum travel or the 15 amp fuse will open. Fuse should be checked before returning gate to service.

Adjustments
TIMER TO CLOSE DUAL GATE DELAY Adjusts time before gate automatically closes Adjustable 5 to 70 seconds. Adjusts delay between master and slave operation 0-4 seconds (836 only with magnetic, solenoid, and other locking devices)

OPERATE When depressed, activates the gate. Used for initial installation and testing.
Hard Shutdown Reset Resets the operator when the gate current senses twice before fully opening or closing.
LED ENABLE When depressed, activates LEDs for 15 minutes to assist in installation and troubleshooting. Hold the push button down for five seconds to put the board in program mode.

Gate Operators, Inc. 911 Siren The 911 Siren is included with all Apollo ETL Gate Operators.
Mount siren in an area that will produce maximum performance (additional wire may be required). Connect the red wire to the SIREN connector on the Remote Monitor Output Connector block. Connect the black wire to the GND connector on the Remote Monitor Output Connector block.

1 Warnings
Read these instructions before proceeding with the installation work. They contain important information regarding safety, installation, use and maintenance. In order to make the use of these instructions as simple as possible, we have tried to follow the same order as the various phases of installation. All operations not specified in these instructions are not allowed; improper use may damage the product and endanger persons and property. Store this manual safely for future use. This manual, as well as the design and manufacture of the devices that make up SIGNO, comply fully with the standards and regulations in force. Considering the hazards that may exist during the installation and operation of SIGNO, it is necessary that also the installation be carried out in strict compliance with current legislation, standards and regulations, particularly: Before you start with the installation, check whether additional devices or materials are needed to complete the automation with SIGNO based on the specific application requirements. The automation system must not be used until it has been commissioned as described in the heading: Testing and commissioning. The packing materials must be disposed of in compliance with local regulations. Do not make modifications to any components unless such action is specified in this manual. Operations of this type are likely to lead to malfunctions. NICE and APOLLO disclaim any liability for damage resulting from modified products. Do not immerse the automation parts in water or any other liquid. During installation, ensure that liquids do not leak into the control unit or other open devices. In the event that liquid substances have penetrated inside the automation devices, immediately disconnect the power supply and contact the APOLLO customer service department. The use of SIGNO in these conditions can be dangerous. Keep all components of SIGNO away from heat sources and open flames; these could damage the components and cause malfunctions, fire or dangerous situations. During long periods of inactivity, the optional battery should be removed and stored in a dry location to prevent leakage of noxious substances. Connect the control unit only to a power supply line equipped with safety grounding system. All operations requiring the opening of the door of the SIGNO device must be performed with the control unit disconnected from the power supply; if the disconnection device is not identifiable, affix a notice to the effect: WARNING: MAINTENANCE WORK IN PROGRESS. In the event that any automatic switches are tripped or fuses blown, you must identify the fault and eliminate it before resetting the switches or replacing fuses. If a fault occurs that cannot be solved using the information provided in this manual, refer to the APOLLO customer service department.
2 Product description
SIGNO is an electromechanical barrier operator including foundation plate, bracket for attachment of a rectangular section arm, and control unit.
The automation system is designed to reach its stroke limit positions (opening and closing strokes) with a deceleration phase, while monitoring motor load during the movement. Thanks to these control systems any obstacles encountered in the range of the stroke are identified immediately causing reversal of the direction of movement (current sensor function). The system can be used in "manual", "semiautomatic and "automatic" mode with functions such as Close 0 sec. after Photo, Always close" and two types of traffic light signalling. The control unit includes a cycle counter that allows management through time of system maintenance interventions, and it is also prearranged for inclusion of radio receivers with SM slot.
Optional accessories are available for all versions. SIGNO 4 SIGNO 6

3 Installation
Note that automatic gate and door systems must be installed exclusively by qualified technical personnel in full compliance with statutory regulations. Before starting the installation work read the instructions in the following manual carefully.

Referring to Fig. 2, check that the installation site is compatible with the dimensions of the barrier. Warning: check whether the arm is to be installed on the right (R) or left (L) Check for the absence of obstructions that could impede movement of the arm during the opening and closing movements. Check that the supporting base for SIGNO is solid and suitably sized. Check that the barrier installation site is compatible with easy and safe operation. Make sure that the mounting positions of the various devices are protected from impacts and that the mounting surfaces are sufficiently sturdy.

Installation
Embed the supplied foundation plate in a suitably sized concrete pad. The plate must be flush with the surface of the pad, perfectly level, and with the exposed surface perfectly clean, taking care not to damage the thread of the anchor bolts and providing the facility for at least one or more conduit for the routing of electrical cables. Warning: the plate must be parallel to the arm. Fig. 4 2. Place SIGNO on the previously installed base and secure it with the supplied nuts and washers. Fig. 5 3. If necessary, invert the position of the spring, moving it from the right to the left. Warning: the arm will be positioned vertically when the spring is in its relaxed position. Fig. 6 4. Fit the arm with the specific bracket supplied and secure it by tightening the 4 screws. Fig. 7 5. Perform the release procedure (see chapter 8 "Manual or release procedure) 6. Bring the arm to its horizontal position and install any optional accessories required. 7. Balance the arm by means of the spring adjuster tension rod. The arm can be considered to be properly balanced when, positioned at an angle of 45, it neither tends to descend nor move upwards. Fig. 8 WARNING: once the balancing procedure is terminated tighten the tension rod nuts. 8. To ensure the safety of the operator and prevent damage to components, while making connections or plugging in the radio receiver the control unit must be disconnected from the mains power supply and the back-up batteries (if present). To make the connections refer to the electrical diagram in heading 3.5, taking account of the following: The control unit must be powered via a 3 x 1.5mm2 cable (phase, neutral and earth); if the distance between the control unit and earth ground is greater than 100 ft an earth electrode must be installed in the immediate vicinity of the control unit To connect the flashing light and electric lock we recommend using a cable with minimum wire section of 1 mm2 For connections of the safety low voltage part of the safety circuit use wires with a minimum section of 0.25 mm2; (use shielded cables if the length exceeds 100 ft, connecting the shield to ground only on the control unit side). Pay attention to devices with polarity (flashing light, electric lock, phototest, services, etc.). NC (normally closed) type inputs, when unused, must be jumpered with the "24 Vdc Common"; NO (normally open) type inputs, when unused, must be left open. Contacts must be strictly mechanical and free of any type of electrical potential; "PNP, "NPN", "Open Collector" etc. type switching inputs are not permitted.

The control unit can be programmed to operate with two types of STOP input: NC type STOP input: for connection of devices with a normal closed output (factory setting). Constant resistance STOP: for connection of devices with a constant resistance output of 8.2K (e.g. safety edges). In this latter case the control unit measures the resistance connected across the STOP input and the services common terminal and disables the activation when the measured value moves outside the range defined by 8.2K +/- 50%. 10

Phototest
The Phototest function is an ideal solution in terms of reliability in relation to safety devices and it makes it possible to achieve "category 2" in compliance with UNI EN 954-1 (edition 12/1998), in relation to the combination of control unit and safety devices. To implement this solution connect the photocells as shown in the following diagram and set dip switch 7 to On (Phototest activation).

Whenever an activation is started all the safety devices are tested and the activation is effectively started only when the test gives positive results.
When you have finished making the connections it is good practice to perform a general check as follows: Power on the control unit and immediately check for the presence of mains voltage on terminals 1-2 and between 28 and 33 volts on terminals 9-10 (services output). If the values do not correspond to the above specifications, disconnect the unit immediately and check the connections and power supply voltage carefully. Approximately 2 seconds after power-on the OK LED should start flashing at regular intervals of one second to indicate that the control unit is functioning correctly. Check that the LEDs relative to the STOP and Photo inputs are illuminated (safety devices active), while the LEDs relative to the step-by-step and open/close inputs must be extinguished (no command present); if this is not the case check the connections and ensure that the various devices are functioning correctly Check that all the safety devices in the system are functioning correctly (emergency stop, photocells, pneumatic safety edges, etc.); whenever the safety devices trip the relative STOP and Photo LEDs must switch off. Position 0: this is the point at which the arm is in the closed condition, corresponding to the closing stroke mechanical stop. Position RC: this is the position at which the arm must start its deceleration phase during the closing cycle. Position RA: this is the position at which the arm must start its deceleration phase during the opening cycle. Position 1: this is the point at which the arm is in the fully open condition, corresponding to the opening stroke mechanical stop.

The "mechanical stops initial search" procedure is executed automatically as the first activation following installation of the barrier. To activate the mechanical stops initial search: 1. release the barrier, move it clear of the mechanical stops so that it is free to move in the opening and closing directions, and then lock the barrier 2. briefly press the Close button on the board or generate a command pulse on the inputs and wait for the control unit to perform a low speed closing to position 0, a low speed opening to position 1, and a high speed closing to position 0. Note if after transmitting the command the first movement is an opening, transmit a second command to stop the procedure and then invert the polarity of the motor feeding wires. 3. When the sequence described above is concluded, a mathematical operation is executed to calculate the deceleration positions (RA and RC) automatically. 4. The mechanical stops "initial search" procedure is now terminated and the gear motor is ready for use. Set up the "functions" dip switches as required. Note 1. If one of the safety devices should trip or another command pulse is received during the "initial search" procedure, movement of the arm will be interrupted immediately; in this case the above procedure must be repeated starting from step 1.

As an alternative to the "Initial search" procedure the "Mechanical stops automatic search" procedure can be activated at any time without having to clear the memory. The procedure performs the mechanical stops 12
(positions 0 and 1) search procedure automatically using the same method as that described above for the "Initial Search" procedure. To activate the mechanical stops search 1. Set up the dip switches as shown:

This procedure involves the manual input of the positions for the start of deceleration as an alternative to the positions calculated automatically with the initial or automatic mechanical stops search procedure. To program the deceleration positions manually: 1. This operation serves to upload the value of the parameter you wish to program to the control unit permanent memory.

To perform the save procedure: 1. Hold down the Stop button for at least 3 seconds, after which the OK LED will start flashing at high frequency 2. Release the Stop button. The OK LED will continue to flash at high frequency for a further 3 seconds. 3. Within three seconds press the Open and Close buttons simultaneously and only momentarily; when the two buttons are pressed simultaneously the OK LED will extinguish and then illuminate for 2 seconds to confirm that the selected parameter has been correctly saved in the memory.

Memory delete
All programmable parameters are recorded in a non-volatile memory that retains the information also in the event of a mains power loss; in certain cases it may prove necessary to remove all the data you have saved in this memory. To delete the contents of the memory: 1. Set the dip switches as shown:

When the memory has been reset the system assumes the same status as when the control unit has never been programmed so no movements will be possible; in this case the first command that is transmitted to the inputs or pressing either the Open or Close buttons serves to activate a "Mechanical stops initial search" procedure Note 1. This operation does not delete the counter values for the number of cycles executed and the number of cycles programmed.

Adjustments
When the programming phase is terminated you can make the small number of indispensable adjustments necessary to ensure correct and safe operation of the automation system.

This is the most important operation, designed to guarantee the maximum safety and reliability of the automation system. The testing procedure can also be used as a periodic check of the devices that make up the automation.
Testing of the entire system must be performed by qualified and experienced personnel who must establish which tests to conduct on the basis of the risks involved, and verify the compliance of the system with applicable regulations, legislation and standards. Each component of the system, e.g. the emergency stop device, photocells, etc. may require a specific testing phase. We therefore recommend observing the procedures shown in the relative instruction manuals. Execute the following steps for the testing procedure: 1. Ensure that the instructions outlined in the "WARNINGS" chapter have been observed in full. 2. Set the dip switches as shown: (all functions disabled and semiautomatic operating mode)

Measure the impact force. If control of "motor torque" is used to assist the system for the reduction of impact force, search for the setting that provides the best results 8. Functions description
Man Present Function The movement is performed only when the command is present. The movement stops as soon as the command is suspended, when one of the safety devices trips ("Stop" or "Photo") or if the current sensor trips. Once the cycle has been interrupted the input command must be deactivated before another command can be transmitted to activate the arm. Semiautomatic and automatic function In "Semiautomatic" or Automatic mode following a command pulse the entire movement is executed until the specified position is reached. A second pulse on the same input that started the movement will cause a system Stop. If a control input is supplied with a continuous signal instead of a pulse, this will result in a priority condition wherein all the other control inputs are disabled (this function is useful, for example, if a clock is to be connected to the opening input). Tripping of the current sensor or a photocell involved in the direction of motion during a cycle ("Photo" during the closing cycle) will result in a direction reversal. In Automatic operating mode, an opening cycle will be followed by a pause and then a closing cycle. If the "Photo" safety device trips during the pause interval, the timer will be reset with the preset pause time; if the "Stop" input trips during the pause interval the re-close function will be cancelled and the system will assume Stop status. Always Close function Automatically starts a close cycle preceded by 5 seconds of preflashing if "arm open" status is detected when power is restored. Condominium Function In "Condominium" mode an opening cycle cannot be interrupted by control pulses except for those that result in a closing cycle. During the closing cycle a new control pulse will cause the arm to reverse. Preflashing A command impulse activates the flashing light, followed by movement 5 seconds later (2 seconds later in manual mode). Re-close 0 seconds after Photo if in automatic mode or re-close after Photo if in semiautomatic mode In automatic mode tripping of the photo safety device in the opening or closing cycle reduces the pause time to 0 seconds irrespective of the preset pause time. In semiautomatic mode tripping of the photo safety device during the closing cycle activates automatic closing with the preset pause time. Photo also during opening With this function tripping of the "Photo" safety device causes an interruption of the movement also during the opening cycle; if the "Semiautomatic" or "Automatic" function is selected, after the "Photo" device is disengaged the opening cycle will be resumed. Phototest activation 16
This function makes it possible to execute a check of the efficiency of all photocells at the start of every cycle, thereby increasing the overall safety level of the system. For further details consult heading 3.9. Suction cup/electric lock The function makes it possible to assign the following type of operation to the Electric lock output (terminals 5 and 6): electric lock (Switch 8 Off) the output is activated for a few seconds in the opening cycle with the arm closed suction cup (Switch 8 On) the output is activated at the end of the closing movement and it remains activated for the entire time that the arm remains in the closed position. Traffic light in one-way mode. In this mode the SCA output is active with the arm open and during the opening cycle it remains switched on, while it is deactivated when closing and with the arm closed. This makes it possible to connect a green traffic light to the output to signal free transit when illuminated. Traffic light in both directions. Setting switch 10 to On, irrespective of the position of switch 9, serves to activate the function "Traffic light in both directions"; the following changes occur in the control unit: the "Open" input becomes "Step-by-Step 2", while the "Courtesy Light" (COR) and "Barrier open indicator light" (SCA) outputs become green traffic light for one direction and green traffic light for the opposite direction as specified in Fig. 5. For each direction of transit a different opening command is set: Step-by-Step (PP) to enter and Step-by-Step 2 (PP2) to exit; in this case two traffic lights are installed with Red and Green signals, connected to the SCA and COR outputs.

In normal conditions the SCA and COR outputs are switched off and consequently also the traffic lights are switched off; when a command is transmitted with PP to enter the protected area, the opening cycle is started and simultaneously output SCA is activated and the green traffic light in the entry direction is activated together with the red traffic light in the exit direction. On the contrary, if the command for opening is given by PP2 the COR output is activated to activate the green traffic light in the exit direction and the red traffic light in the entry direction. The light will remain illuminated for the entire duration of the opening phase and during the pause phase, if programmed; in contrast, during the closing phase the green and red lights will be illuminated together to signal that the transit priority situation is no longer valid. The two outputs can be used to drive low power 24 Vdc lamps for a maximum of 10 W per output. If higher power lamps are required then it will be necessary to use relays driven by the control unit outputs to control the traffic lights.
7 What to do if
The following section describes some of the more common problems that may be encountered during installation of the system. No LED is on: check for the presence of mains voltage on terminals 1 and 2 and ensure that fuses F1 and F3 are not blown. The unit fails to start: check that the Stop and Photo safety device input LEDs are active and the motor is locked (release LED extinguished). A direction reversal occurs during a cycle: Check whether one of the safety devices has tripped (Photo during the closing cycle) or whether the current sensor has tripped; in this latter case check that the current sensor setting is sufficiently high to allow movement of the arm. If the value is insufficient increase the level by turning the torque trimmer (TR1) in a clockwise direction. 17
High frequency flashing of the OK LED: the power supply voltage is insufficient or an incorrect combination has been selected on the dip switches. The motor moves slowly: the control unit is executing an alignment procedure; the first trip of the current sensor is interpreted as a mechanical stop.
The motor performs the acceleration phase and then stops: check whether or not the encoder LED is flashing during movement of the motor. The flashing frequency may be higher or lower in relation to the speed of movement. With the motor at a standstill the LED may be On or Off, depending on the exact angular position at which the motor shaft has stopped. OK LED steadily illuminated for a few seconds immediately after a command: this indicates a fault in the motor control stage; check the wiring and ground insulation of the motor; if no problems are found, install a new control unit.

9 Maintenance
Maintenance operations must be performed in strict compliance with the safety directions provided in this manual and in accordance with applicable legislation and standards. Although Signo does not require any special maintenance operations, regular inspections carried out at programmed intervals will ensure longer life of the system and reliable operation of the safety devices. For this purpose all the tests and checks specified in heading 4.1 "Testing" should be performed. If other devices are installed, adhere strictly to the directions given in the relative maintenance plan.

9.1
To assist planning of maintenance interventions for the entire system the control unit is equipped with a cycle counter that increases its value at each opening cycle. The increase is signalled by a flash of the maintenance LED (MAN). The cycles counter value is constantly compared to an alarm threshold value (programmable by the system installer) and checked against a warning threshold (set automatically at approximately 6 % below the alarm threshold). When the number of cycles executed exceeds the warning threshold the maintenance LED flashes only during operation of the barrier, while if the alarm threshold is exceeded this LED flashes constantly (when the motor is stopped and during movements) thereby signalling the urgent need for maintenance. The alarm threshold can be programmed from a minimum value of 1000 to a maximum of 255000 cycles in multiples of 1000.

10 Disposal
SIGNO is constructed of various types of materials, some of which can be recycled (steel, aluminium, plastic, electric cables), while others must be disposed of (electronic boards and components). WARNING: some electronic components may contain polluting substances; do not pollute the environment. Enquire about the recycling or disposal systems available in compliance with regulations locally in force. 1. Disconnect the automation system from the mains power supply. 2. Disassemble all the devices and accessories, following in reverse order the procedures described in chapter 3 Installation 3. Remove the electronic board. 4. Sort the various electrical and recyclable materials and consign them to licensed firms for recovery and disposal. 5. Consign the remaining materials to authorized scrap collection centres.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Periodically test the obstruction sensitivity to assure safe and proper operation. Do not test sensitivity by standing between the gate and the hinge or stop post. The CAUTION AUTOMATIC GATE signs should be clearly visible from both sides of the gate. Always insure that the gate has closed securely before leaving area. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access.
Use the emergency release only when the gate is not moving. A secondary entrapment device such as loop detectors, edge switches, and beam detectors are highly recommended and required to meet the UL325 standard. Install control devices such as keypads far enough away (5 feet or further) from any moving parts of the operator and gate to prevent possible injury. Do not install control box where the gate can come in contact with person using the push button on side of control box. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the gate or operator. All rollers should be covered to prevent injury. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. Read the owners manual. Have a qualified service person make repairs to gate hardware. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the gate operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
APPLICATIONS
The Apollo Model 1500/1600 Swing Gate Operator is designed to handle swing gates up to 16 feet in length and 600 pounds each. A professional fence or gate dealer is recommended to assure proper installation. Apollo Gate Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Gate Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. A 12 Volt sealed battery (33ampere hour minimum) with connecting posts located on the top is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators provide up to 200 operations in the event of
power outages. The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy (eliminating the need for costly trenching to remote entrances).
If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. The following table should be used as a guide for capacity of operation of operators only, additional options may reduce the the daily usage. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations.

Verify that the proper operator has been selected for this application. Verify proper installation and operation of the gate. 1. Are the hinges servicable? 2. Does the gate swing free and level? 3. Will the gate require a locking device? 4. Is the hinge and stop posts sturdy enough to handle the gate & operator? Determine the general location of the operator, attachment points, and solar panel (if used). 1. Mount the control box within 4 feet of the pivot arm. Do not mount the control box where the person using the push button on side of the box can come in contact with the gate. Use mounting hardware capable of supporting the weight of the control box with the battery installed. Set battery inside of control box with terminals toward the front (Do not use any battery with side terminals).

Connect actuator cable to the MASTER connector on the control board. If a 1600 Dual Operator is being installed and conduit is being used under the drive (recommended), cut the slave (opposite side where control box is mounted) actuator cable about 12 from the white connector. Run the remaining cable across the drive through conduit and up through the control box. Cutoff any excess cable and splice the short piece back to the cable.* Connect to the SLAVE connector on the control board. Connect the RED power wire (s) to the battery positive ( + ) and the BLACK power wire (s) to the battery negative ( - ) * Instead of cutting the slave cable, remove the pins on the plug with a jeweler's common blade screwdriver or appropriate tool (the staples on the actuator shipping carton work great) ,run the cable through the conduit and reinsert the pins into the plug. 8

Activate push button on the side of the control box and extend the actuator until it stops (PULL TO OPEN only, leave actuator retracted for PUSH TO OPEN). WARNING: Do not let extension tube rotate as it extends. Do not insert fingers or tools in the hole at the end of the extension tube Align the hole in the end of the actuator extension tube with the holes in the gate bracket and locate gate bracket mounting position with the gate in the closed position. Weld or bolt the gate bracket to the gate using 3/8 bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Tip: Tack weld or C clamp at first if uncertain about location. Run the unit through a complete cycle to insure proper operation then mount permanently . Bolt the actuator to the gate bracket as shown.

Emergency Bypass Connector Used when the control board is not functioning. Unplug the motor harness from the Master (or Slave) Connector and momentarily insert into the Emergency Bypass Connector to open the gate. In the event the motor is not disconnected quickly enough, the blue 15 amp fuse will protect the circuit board from damage and should be replaced when the 10 original problem is fixed.

Note: Transmission distances will vary according to terrain, obstructions, and electrical interference. The normal range from inside a vehicle is 50-100 feet while 100-150 feet may be obtained from outside the vehicle. 1. Low battery in transmitter. Replace battery. 2. Transmitter malfunctioning. Try a different transmitter. 3. Antenna not making good connection. Be sure center conductor of antenna is penetrating the female connector on the side of the gate box. 4. Reception is being blocked. Raise the height of the antenna using a #244 antenna extension kit. 5. Replace receiver.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Periodically test the obstruction sensitivity to assure safe and proper operation. Do not test sensitivity by standing between the gate and the hinge or stop post. The CAUTION AUTOMATIC GATE signs should be clearly visible from both sides of the gate. Always insure that the gate has closed securely before leaving area. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access.
Use the emergency release only when the gate is not moving. A secondary entrapment device such as loop detectors, edge switches, and beam detectors are highly recommended and required to meet the UL325 standard. Install control devices such as keypads far enough away (5 feet or further) from any moving parts of the operator and gate to prevent possible injury. Do not install control box where the gate can come in contact with person using the push button on side of control box. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the gate or operator. All rollers should be covered to prevent injury. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. Read the owners manual. Have a qualified service person make repairs to gate hardware. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the gate operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
APPLICATIONS
The Apollo Model 1550ETL/1650ETL Swing Gate Operator is approved for Vehicular Class I & II usage under UL 325 Guidelines, and is designed to handle swing gates up to 16 feet in length and 600 pounds each. A professional fence or gate dealer is recommended to assure proper installation. Apollo Gate Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Gate Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. A 12 Volt sealed battery (33 ampere hour minimum) with connecting posts located on the top is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators provide up to 200 operations in the event of
power outages. The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy (Electrical battery chargers should have a class 2 transformer rating).
If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. The following table should be used as a guide for capacity of operation of operators only, additional options may reduce the the daily usage. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations.

The following check list should be used before beginning installation:
Verify that the proper operator has been selected for this application. Verify proper installation and operation of the gate. 1. Are the hinges servicable? 2. Does the gate swing free and level? 3. Will the gate require a locking device? 4. Is the hinge and stop posts sturdy enough to handle the gate & operator? 5. Does the gate meet U.L. construction? Determine the general location of the operator, attachment points, and solar panel (if used). 1. Is there a suitable location for the operator? 2.Can the solar panel (if used) be mounted in an unobstructed area facing south (in the northern hemisphere)? 3. Will additional solar panel cable be required? 4. Is electricity available (if required)? Consider safety and access options. Recommend if needed. 1. Will there be children or animals in the area? 2. Are safety loops, edge switches, or photo beam detectors required? 3. How can the gate be opened in emergencies? 4. How will visitors enter and exit? 5. Will vehicles (and trailers) have sufficient room off roadway to operate any control devices such as keypads?

Mount the control box within 4 feet of the pivot arm. Do not mount the control box where the person using the push button on side of the box can come in contact with the gate. Use mounting hardware capable of supporting the weight of the control box with the battery installed. Set battery inside of control box with terminals toward the front (Do not use any battery with side terminals).
STEP 4
Connect actuator cable to the MASTER connector on the control board. If a 1650 Dual Operator is being installed and conduit is being used under the drive (recommended), cut the slave (opposite side where control box is mounted) actuator cable about 12 from the white connector. Run the remaining cable across the drive through conduit and up through the control box. Cutoff any excess cable and splice the short piece back to the cable.* Connect to the SLAVE connector on the control board. Connect the RED power wire (s) to the battery positive ( + ) and the BLACK power wire (s) to the battery negative ( - ) * Instead of cutting the slave cable, remove the pins on the plug with a jeweler's common blade screwdriver or appropriate tool (the staples on the actuator shipping carton work great) ,run the cable through the conduit and reinsert the pins into the plug.

Activate push button on the side of the control box and extend the actuator until it stops (PULL TO OPEN only, leave actuator retracted for PUSH TO OPEN). WARNING: Do not let extension tube rotate as it extends. Do not insert fingers or tools in the hole at the end of the extension tube Align the hole in the end of the actuator extension tube with the holes in the gate bracket and locate gate bracket mounting position with the gate in the closed position. Weld or bolt the gate bracket to the gate using 3/8 bolts, lock washers, and nuts. Tip: Tack weld or C clamp at first if uncertain about location. Run the unit through a complete cycle to insure proper operation then mount permanently . Bolt the actuator to the gate bracket as shown.

PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
The 835/836 circuit boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the circuit board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition can only be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL connectors on the left side of the circuit board to ground. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door should be opened and closed to reset the circuit board.
Once the operator is installed or if the control board is replaced, you will need to program the control board for proper current sensing. The operator should be functional and the open and close limits set. 1. Push and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds. The STOP LED will blink indicating the board is in learn mode. 2. Cycle the gate three full times (must reach the open and close limit switches on each cycle). The STOP LED will now stay illuminated. 3. Adjust the current sensitivity pot to insure safe operation
The current sensitivity may be readjusted at any time without relearning the board. Periodically check the current sensitivity for safe operation.

Photo Eye Hookup Photo eye / safety loop wiring. Connect the positive power wire of the accessory to 12V. Connect the ground wire of the accessory to MAS (upper right area of the 835/836 board). Connect the relay wires of the accessory as normal: COM to GND. NO to SAFETY (#14) (for a safety device). When the gate operator begins opening (comes off of the closed limits) the MAS terminal will become a ground and will complete the flow of power to the accessory. This will power the accessory up and it will work as normal until the gate gets closed and the MAS terminal switches and the device will power down.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Periodically test the obstruction sensitivity to assure safe and proper operation. Do not test sensitivity by standing between the gate and the hinge or stop post. The CAUTION AUTOMATIC GATE signs should be clearly visible from both sides of the gate. Always insure that the gate has closed securely before leaving area. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access.
Use the emergency release only when the gate is not moving. A secondary entrapment device such as loop detectors, edge switches, and beam detectors are highly recommended and required to meet the UL325 standard. Install control devices such as keypads far enough away (5 feet or further) from any moving parts of the operator and gate to prevent possible injury. Do not install control box where the gate can come in contact with person using the push button on side of control box. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the gate or operator. All rollers should be covered to prevent injury. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. Read the owners manual. Have a qualified service person make repairs to gate hardware. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non contact sensors. APPLICATIONS
The Model 3500/3600 Swing Gate Operator is designed for residential and commercial applications. The 3500/3600 is listed with ETL and complies with the UL 325 standard. The 3500/3600 will handle swing gates up to 20 feet in length and 1,000 pounds each. A professional fence or gate dealer is recommended to assure proper installation. The Model 3500/3600 operator is 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:

OPERATOR INSTALLATION
STEP 1 The 3500 operator is designed for installation using a 4 x 4 square post (not supplied) with 1/4 wall thickness. 1. Determine the height on the gate where the operator will attach to. 2. Install the post as per the diagram below. The top of the post should be 2 above the centerline of the location where the gate bracket will be mounted on the gate. Gate bracket should be mounted to a structural member on the gate. Do not attach the gate bracket to pickets. 3. Conduit should be considered at this time for cable routing from control box to operator.
IMPORTANT: The mounting post should be square to the gate in the closed position and level for proper operation.

STEP 2
Mount the control box as close to the operator as possible (recommended within 5 feet). Use mounting hardware capable of supporting the weight of the control box with the battery installed. Do not mount the control box where the person using the push button on the side of the box can come in contact with the gate. Set the battery inside of the control box with the terminals toward the front. (Do not use batteries with side terminals.)
STEP 3 Weld the mounting bracket on top of the mounting post. The bracket should be level and square to the post. Tack welds may be made from the top side of the bracket and post. Bottom welds should be made for permanent rigidity.
STEP 4 Lay the operator chassis on its side. The two ears on the primary arm should point toward the direction the gate will close. Install the primary arm to the main drive shaft using the 1/4 key stock and tighten both set screws. The collar on the primary arm should be installed on the shaft as far as possible.

Install the drive unit on the mounting bracket using (4) 1/2 x 3/4 hex bolts and lock washers.
STEP 6
Install the secondary arm to the primary arm using a 1/2 x 2-1/4 hex bolt, brass washers, and lock nut. The stop tab should be positioned away from the gate.

STEP 7 Install the adjustable arms to the secondary arm using the 1/2 x 1-1/2 hex bolt and nut. Use the middle hole in the adjustable arm.

STEP 7 Install the gate bracket to the adjustable arm using the 1/2 x 2-1/2 hex bolt, washers, and lock nut.
STEP 8 Push the arms assembly up against the gate in the closed position. Make sure that the primary arm is locked into the stop tab on the secondary arm. Tack weld or c-clamp the gate bracket to the gate. Permanent welds or bolt attachment should be completed once limits are set.
STEP 9 Route the cable from the control box to the operator. Connect the cable to the left side of the terminal block on the operator as shown. The operator in this manual is set up for left side installation (from inside looking at gate in closed position). STEP 10 Connect the two ring terminals on the connector end of the cable to the battery. The battery charger or solar panel should be installed at this time. Plug the connector into the Master connector on the circuit board.
STEP 11 Press LED Enable on the right side of the circuit board. Turn program switch #1 off (TIMER TO CLOSE)
The gate should be in the closed position. Rotate the bottom collar until the closed LED illuminates. Open the gate to the desired open position and stop the gate. Rotate the top magnet collar until the open limit LED illuminates. The close limit should be adjusted to allow the arms to lock over center but ensure that the close LED is illuminated when the gate stops.

STEP 12 The close tension on the gate can be further adjusted by: Removing the 1/2 bolt on the secondary arm (course adjustment 1-2). Slide the adjustable arm out and rotate counter clockwise to increase close pressure and clockwise to reduce close pressure. The three holes in the adjustable arm will allow further adjustment if necessary.
EMERGENCY MANUAL OPERATION For manual operation, flip the release switch on the left underside of the operator. Pull the arms enough to disengage the lock tab and open the gate. The release switch should be reset for normal operation.

STEP 13
The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition can only be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL connectors on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) should be opened and closed to reset the control board.
The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance. All limits should be set before beginning this procedure. This new procedure applies to revision 31 or higher firmware. 1. Press and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds and then release. The STOP LED will blink indicating that the board is in learn mode. 3. Cycle gate for 3 full cycles. The STOP LED will stop blinking indicating that the board is now ready for normal operation 4. Test the auto reverse sensitivity to ensure maximum safety protection. The current sensitivity adjustment pot may be adjusted to decrease or increase sensitivity.
8. Refer to the 835/836 Operator Control Board Manual to set other options such as program switch options and close timer adjustments. Installation is now complete.

Photo Eye Hookup Photo eye / safety loop wiring. Connect the positive power wire of the accessory to 12V. Connect the ground wire of the accessory to MAS (upper right area of the 835/836 board). Connect the relay wires of the accessory as normal: COM to GND. NO to SAFETY (#14) (for a safety device). When the gate operator begins opening (comes off of the closed limits) the MAS terminal will become a ground and will complete the flow of power to the accessory. This will power the accessory up and it will work as normal until the gate gets closed and the MAS terminal switches and the device will power down.

SYMPTOM
Note: Transmission distances will vary according to terrain, obstructions, and electrical interference. The normal range from inside a vehicle is 50-100 feet while 100-150 feet may be obtained from outside the vehicle. 1. Low battery in transmitter. Replace battery. 2. Transmitter malfunctioning. Try a different transmitter. 3. Antenna not making good connection. Be sure center conductor of antenna is penetrating the female connector on the side of the gate box. 4. Reception is being blocked. Raise the height of the antenna using a #244 antenna extension kit. 5. Replace receiver.

1. Transmitter is stuck on. Check all transmitters, keypads, pushbuttons, etc. for a stuck button. 2. Transmitter and receiver code switches are all down, up, or in the middle. Change at least one switch position in the transmitter and receiver. 3. Push button on side of control box is defective. Disconnect and test.

STEP 1. Install two 3 dia. Posts parallel to the gate as shown. Posts height depends on height preference of operator.
STEP 2. Remove chain cover and front lid. Mount to posts using the four supplied 3 U-bolts
STEP 3. Install one of the gate brackets and chain bolts on right side of gate using the supplied 2 U-bolts. Do not tighten at this time.
STEP 4. Attach the chain to the chain bolt using the master chain link.
Note: The height of the chain bolt should align with the bottom teeth of the idler sprockets.

STEP 6. (Refer to page 8) Install the other gate bracket and chain bolt on the left side of the gate. Determine the required length of chain needed to attach to the chain bolt and still allow adjustment. Using a chain breaking tool, remove excess chain. Attach chain to chain bolt. Tighten all chain brackets and chain bolts. Allow 1 inch of chain lag per 10 feet of chain.

The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance. All limits should be set before beginning this procedure. This new procedure applies to revision 31 or higher firmware. 1. Press and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds. The STOP LED will blink indicating that the board is in learn mode. 3. Cycle gate for 3 full cycles. The STOP LED will stop blinking indicating that the board is now ready for normal operation 4. Test the auto reverse sensitivity to ensure maximum safety protection. The current sensitivity adjustment pot may be adjusted to decrease or increase sensitivity.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The Apollo 835/836 board is the standard board in all ETL compliant Apollo Gate Operators. Single gate systems use the 835 board (distinguished by MASTER and EMERGENCY BYPASS modular receptacles) and DUAL gate systems use the 836 board (distinguished by MASTER, SLAVE and EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacles). The 836 board may be used in single gate applications by simply turning PROGRAM SWITCH #3 to the OFF position and only using the MASTER receptacle of the board. Apollo 7000 ETL and 7100 ETL systems use a Stature Electric direct current motor while the Commercial 7200 ETL and 7300 ETL use a Bison direct current motor. Both motors are similar in design and thus trouble shooting for all of the slide gate systems is covered in one manual. Keep in mind that SLIDE GATE operators do NOT utilize the SMART ACTUATOR feature of the 835/836 board so Program switch #10 must ALWAYS be in the OFF position. Trouble Shooting the Apollo 7000/7100/7200/7300 ETL systems: 1. Check your battery! The battery in your gate operator is the power source for the entire system. If it is not adequately charged, the system will not operator properly. Test the battery by checking the voltage with a volt-meter while the battery is under load (gate operating). For AC charged systems unplug the battery charger before load testing battery. Battery voltage should be 11.5 volt DC or higher while the operator is running (battery under load). Program Switch Settings: At the upper center of the board there are 10 program switches. These switches enable and disable certain features of the Apollo system. DEFAULT setting of these switches is as follows: SINGLE GATE 1,2,3,5 ON (all others OFF) DUAL GATE 1,2,5 ON (all others OFF) LED ENABLE BUTTON: On the right side of the board half way down is the LED ENABLE button. Pressing this button once and releasing it enables the LEDs on the board for approximately 15 minutes. When the LEDs are enabled the STOP light should always be lit on the left side of the board. Other LEDs may be lit as well depending on the status of the operator. If the gate(s) are in the OPEN position, the OPEN limit indicator(s) should be lit. If the gate(s) are CLOSED, the CLOSED limit indicator(s) should be lit. (The OPEN and CLOSED LEDs should never be on at the same time) Any LEDs that are lit on the left side of the board or at the lower right corner of the board (except the STOP LED) indicate a TRIGGER from an accessory device connected at that location. Devices connected where an LED is lit should be removed before further testing is done. After the system is made operational these devices may be reconnected one at a time. Check for proper system operation after each connection. Current Sensitivity: At the top center of the board is the Current Sensitivity adjustment. It adjusts the amount of force the operator will exert before it senses an obstruction. As the wheel is turned counter clockwise, the operator will reverse more easily. As the wheel is turned clockwise, the operator will push harder. Any time the system CURRENT SENSES it will stop and reverse for two (2) seconds. If the system CURRENT SENSES a second time before fully opening or closing it will again reverse for two (2)_seconds and then go into a HARD SHUTDOWN (see below). Sensitivity should be set to a level that is sufficiently strong to open and close the gate in all conditions yet still sensitive enough to be safe. A good starting point is the one oclock position.

Activating the system: A momentary connection between activation inputs and ground (GND) is how the system is activated. At the upper left and bottom right of the board are terminals marked INP or INPUT. These terminals - when momentarily shorted to ground (GND) - will open, stop and close the gate with each activation. The button on the side of the box (swing gates ONLY) is connected to these terminals and may be used to activate the gate when the key is in the horizontal position. On our newest boards there is an OPERATE button at the upper left area of the board that may be used in the same manner. HARD SHUTDOWN: If the system has encountered an obstruction two times before fully opening or closing the HARD SHUTDOWN LED (upper right of board) will begin flashing indicating a Hard Shutdown situation. Check to see that any obstructions are removed from the gates path and then press the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button to restart the system. Left Hand / Right Hand Operation: All APOLLO Slide Gates are shipped from the factory wired to close to the left (when looking out of the property). It is suggested to install and adjust the operator as it comes from the factory then re-wire the system if necessary. The easiest way to determine if your system requires re-wiring is to use the LED Enable button. Once the LEDs are enabled, the OPEN LIMIT light should come on in the open position and the CLOSED LIMIT light should come on when the gate is closed. Should these be backwards make the following changes: From the MASTER plug there are five wires going to a terminal strip Reverse the RED with the BLACK - and reverse the ORANGE with the WHITE. To verify that the wiring has been changed correctly: Manually move the gate to the mid-way position and plug the main harness into the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle the gate should OPEN. If it closes the RED and BLACK motor wires must be reversed. Once it is verified that the EMERGENCY BYPASS does open the gate then check the limit switch wiring. Dis-engage the mechanical release and open the gate fully verify the OPEN LIMIT led is on. Close the gate fully verify the CLOSED LIMIT led. If the limits are backwards reverse the ORANGE and WHITE limit wires. Dual Gate Systems: Test dual gate systems individually. Turn program switch #3 ON (disables SLAVE side of board) and test actuators one at a time using MASTER side of board only. Confirm proper operation of each actuator. If both test 100% - then test together by connecting both actuators and turning program switch #3 to the OFF position. EMERGENCY BYPASS: At the bottom left of the board is the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle. Plugging the operator harness into this receptacle will OPEN the gate ONLY! It is intended to open the gate(s) should other methods fail. Note that if the motor draws more than 15 amps of current the fuse above the receptacle will blow. Also, the gate operator will not stop by its self at the open position. The plug must be removed to stop the gate. (This is also a handy way to test that the current consumption of the motor is within the normal limits) FIRMWARE: In the upper right area of the board there is a micro-processor that has a white label on it. This is the FIRMWARE of the system. Currently (May 2005) we are using firmware version V31.00.02. For troubleshooting versions of the firmware earlier then V31.00.00 consult your original instructions that were included with your system. Systems that are out of warranty may be upgraded to newer version firmware for a nominal fee.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Periodically test the obstruction sensitivity to assure safe and proper operation. Do not test sensitivity by standing between the gate and the hinge or stop post. The CAUTION AUTOMATIC GATE signs should be clearly visible from both sides of the gate. Always insure that the gate has closed securely before leaving area. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access.
Use the emergency release only when the gate is not moving. A secondary entrapment device such as loop detectors, edge switches, and beam detectors are highly recommended and required to meet the UL325 standard. Install control devices such as keypads far enough away (5 feet or further) from any moving parts of the operator and gate to prevent possible injury. Do not install control box where the gate can come in contact with person using the push button on side of control box. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the gate or operator. All rollers should be covered to prevent injury. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. Read the owners manual. Have a qualified service person make repairs to gate hardware. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the gate operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
APPLICATIONS
The Apollo Model 7100ETL Slide Gate Operator is designed to handle a slide gate up to 32 feet in total length (accomodates a 30 foot drive). A professional fence or gate dealer is recommended to assure proper installation. Apollo Gate Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Gate Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. A 12 Volt sealed type battery (33 ampere hour minimum) is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators provide up to 200 operations in the event of
power outages. The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy (Electrical battery chargers should have a class 2 transformer rating).
If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. The following table should be used as a guide for capacity of operation of operators only, additional options may reduce the the daily usage. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations.

The following checklist should be used before beginning installation:
Verify that the proper operator has been selected for this application. Verify proper installation and operation of the gate. 1. Are all rollers covered with a protective housing? 2. Are the rollers servicable? 3. Does the gate roll free and level? 4. Will the gate require a locking device? 5. Are the main posts sturdy enough to handle the gate & operator?
Determine the general location of the operator, chian brackets, and solar panel (if used). 1. Is there a suitable location for the operator? 2.Can the solar panel (if used) be mounted in an unobstructed area facing south? 3. Will additional solar panel cable be required? 4. Is electricity available (if required)? Consider safety and access options. Recommend if needed. 1. Will there be chidren or animals in the area? 2. Are safety loops, edge switches, or photo beam detectors required? 3. How can the gate be opened in emergencies? 4. How will visitors enter and exit? 5. Will vehicles (and trailers) have sufficient room off roadway to operate any control devices such as keypads?

The required depth of the pad will vary from site to site. Normally, the pad should be at least 4 above the surface and 18 below (Figure A & B). Fig. B

Conduit requirements should be considered in the planning stage. If electrical power is required, a separate conduit should be installed for electrical only. A certified electrician should be consulted for the proper conduit material (Figure D & E). Note Allow the concrete to cure as per the directions on the bag. Four 1/2 anchor bolts (not supplied) are recommended to mount the chassis. The holes should be drilled with a 1/2 concrete drill bit.
STEP 1. Set the operator on the pad as shown. Align the sprockets 3 to 5 inches from the inside surface of the gate. STEP 2. Mark the four mounting holes on the pad. STEP 3. Remove the operator and drill the holes according to the anchor bolt manufacturers instructions. STEP 4. Replace the operator and fasten to the pad.

The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition can only be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL connectors on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) should be opened and closed to reset the control board.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The Apollo 835/836 board is the standard board in all ETL compliant Apollo Gate Operators. Single gate systems use the 835 board (distinguished by MASTER and EMERGENCY BYPASS modular receptacles) and DUAL gate systems use the 836 board (distinguished by MASTER, SLAVE and EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacles). The 836 board may be used in single gate applications by simply turning PROGRAM SWITCH #3 to the OFF position and only using the MASTER receptacle of the board. Apollo 7000 ETL and 7100 ETL systems use a Stature Electric direct current motor while the Commercial 7200 ETL and 7300 ETL use a Bison direct current motor. Both motors are similar in design and thus trouble shooting for all of the slide gate systems is covered in one manual. Keep in mind that SLIDE GATE operators do NOT utilize the SMART ACTUATOR feature of the 835/836 board so Program switch #10 must ALWAYS be in the OFF position. Trouble Shooting the Apollo 7000/7100/7200/7300 ETL systems: 1. Check your battery! The battery in your gate operator is the power source for the entire system. If it is not adequately charged, the system will not operator properly. Test the battery by checking the voltage with a volt-meter while the battery is under load (gate operating). For AC charged systems unplug the battery charger before load testing battery. Battery voltage should be 11.5 volt DC or higher while the operator is running (battery under load). Program Switch Settings: At the upper center of the board there are 10 program switches. These switches enable and disable certain features of the Apollo system. DEFAULT setting of these switches is as follows: SINGLE GATE 1,2,3,5 ON (all others OFF) DUAL GATE 1,2,5 ON (all others OFF) LED ENABLE BUTTON: On the right side of the board half way down is the LED ENABLE button. Pressing this button once and releasing it enables the LEDs on the board for approximately 15 minutes. When the LEDs are enabled the STOP light should always be lit on the left side of the board. Other LEDs may be lit as well depending on the status of the operator. If the gate(s) are in the OPEN position, the OPEN limit indicator(s) should be lit. If the gate(s) are CLOSED, the CLOSED limit indicator(s) should be lit. (The OPEN and CLOSED LEDs should never be on at the same time) Any LEDs that are lit on the left side of the board or at the lower right corner of the board (except the STOP LED) indicate a TRIGGER from an accessory device connected at that location. Devices connected where an LED is lit should be removed before further testing is done. After the system is made operational these devices may be reconnected one at a time. Check for proper system operation after each connection. Current Sensitivity: At the top center of the board is the Current Sensitivity adjustment. It adjusts the amount of force the operator will exert before it senses an obstruction. As the wheel is turned counter clockwise, the operator will reverse more easily. As the wheel is turned clockwise, the operator will push harder. Any time the system CURRENT SENSES it will stop and reverse for two (2) seconds. If the system CURRENT SENSES a second time before fully opening or closing it will again reverse for two (2)_seconds and then go into a HARD SHUTDOWN (see below). Sensitivity should be set to a level that is sufficiently strong to open and close the gate in all conditions yet still sensitive enough to be safe. A good starting point is the one oclock position.

Activating the system: A momentary connection between activation inputs and ground (GND) is how the system is activated. At the upper left and bottom right of the board are terminals marked INP or INPUT. These terminals - when momentarily shorted to ground (GND) - will open, stop and close the gate with each activation. The button on the side of the box (swing gates ONLY) is connected to these terminals and may be used to activate the gate when the key is in the horizontal position. On our newest boards there is an OPERATE button at the upper left area of the board that may be used in the same manner. HARD SHUTDOWN: If the system has encountered an obstruction two times before fully opening or closing the HARD SHUTDOWN LED (upper right of board) will begin flashing indicating a Hard Shutdown situation. Check to see that any obstructions are removed from the gates path and then press the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button to restart the system. Left Hand / Right Hand Operation: All APOLLO Slide Gates are shipped from the factory wired to close to the left (when looking out of the property). It is suggested to install and adjust the operator as it comes from the factory then re-wire the system if necessary. The easiest way to determine if your system requires re-wiring is to use the LED Enable button. Once the LEDs are enabled, the OPEN LIMIT light should come on in the open position and the CLOSED LIMIT light should come on when the gate is closed. Should these be backwards make the following changes: From the MASTER plug there are five wires going to a terminal strip Reverse the RED with the BLACK - and reverse the ORANGE with the WHITE. To verify that the wiring has been changed correctly: Manually move the gate to the mid-way position and plug the main harness into the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle the gate should OPEN. If it closes the RED and BLACK motor wires must be reversed. Once it is verified that the EMERGENCY BYPASS does open the gate then check the limit switch wiring. Dis-engage the mechanical release and open the gate fully verify the OPEN LIMIT led is on. Close the gate fully verify the CLOSED LIMIT led. If the limits are backwards reverse the ORANGE and WHITE limit wires. Dual Gate Systems: Test dual gate systems individually. Turn program switch #3 ON (disables SLAVE side of board) and test actuators one at a time using MASTER side of board only. Confirm proper operation of each actuator. If both test 100% - then test together by connecting both actuators and turning program switch #3 to the OFF position. EMERGENCY BYPASS: At the bottom left of the board is the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle. Plugging the operator harness into this receptacle will OPEN the gate ONLY! It is intended to open the gate(s) should other methods fail. Note that if the motor draws more than 15 amps of current the fuse above the receptacle will blow. Also, the gate operator will not stop by its self at the open position. The plug must be removed to stop the gate. (This is also a handy way to test that the current consumption of the motor is within the normal limits) FIRMWARE: In the upper right area of the board there is a micro-processor that has a white label on it. This is the FIRMWARE of the system. Currently (May 2005) we are using firmware version V31.00.02. For troubleshooting versions of the firmware earlier then V31.00.00 consult your original instructions that were included with your system. Systems that are out of warranty may be upgraded to newer version firmware for a nominal fee.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Periodically test the obstruction sensitivity to assure safe and proper operation. Do not test sensitivity by standing between the gate and the hinge or stop post. The CAUTION AUTOMATIC GATE signs should be clearly visible from both sides of the gate. Always insure that the gate has closed securely before leaving area. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access.
Use the emergency release only when the gate is not moving. A secondary entrapment device such as loop detectors, edge switches, and beam detectors are highly recommended and required to meet the UL325 standard. Install control devices such as keypads far enough away (5 feet or further) from any moving parts of the operator and gate to prevent possible injury. Do not install control box where the gate can come in contact with person using the push button on side of control box. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the gate or operator. All rollers should be covered to prevent injury. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. Read the owners manual. Have a qualified service person make repairs to gate hardware. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the gate operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
APPLICATIONS
The Apollo Model 7200ETL Slide Gate Operator is designed to handle a slide gate up to 32 feet in total length (accomodates a 30 foot drive) and 1,000 Lbs. A professional fence or gate dealer is recommended to assure proper installation. Apollo Gate Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Gate Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. A 12 Volt sealed battery (33 ampere hour minimum) is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators provide up to 200 operations in the event of
power outages. The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy (Electrical battery chargers should have a class 2 transformer rating).
If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. The following table should be used as a guide for capacity of operation of operators only, additional options may reduce the the daily usage. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations.

Verify that the proper operator has been selected for this application. Verify proper installation and operation of the gate. 1. Are all rollers covered with a protective housing? 2. Are the rollers servicable? 3. Does the gate roll free and level? 4. Will the gate require a locking device? 5. Are the main posts sturdy enough to handle the gate & operator?
Determine the general location of the operator, chian brackets, and solar panel (if used). 1. Is there a suitable location for the operator? 2.Can the solar panel (if used) be mounted in an unobstructed area facing south? 3. Will additional solar panel cable be required? 4. Is electricity available (if required)? Consider safety and access options. Recommend if needed. 1. Will there be chidren or animals in the area? 2. Are safety loops, edge switches, or photo beam detectors required? 3. How can the gate be opened in emergencies? 4. How will visitors enter and exit? 5. Will vehicles (and trailers) have sufficient room off roadway to operate any control devices such as keypads?

STEP 1. Install two 3 dia. Posts parallel to the gate as shown. Posts height depends on height preference of operator.
STEP 2. Remove chain cover and front lid. Mount to posts using the four supplied 3 U-bolts
STEP 3. Install one of the gate brackets and chain bolts on right side of gate using the supplied 2 U-bolts. Do not tighten at this time.
STEP 4. Attach the chain to the chain bolt using the master chain link.
Note: The height of the chain bolt should align with the bottom teeth of the idler sprockets.

STEP 6. (Refer to page 8) Install the other gate bracket and chain bolt on the left side of the gate. Determine the required length of chain needed to attach to the chain bolt and still allow adjustment. Using a chain breaking tool (not provided), remove excess chain. Attach chain to chain bolt. Tighten all chain brackets and chain bolts. Allow 1 inch of chain lag per 10 feet of chain.

The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition can only be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL connectors on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) should be opened and closed to reset the control board.
The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance. All limits should be set before beginning this procedure. This new procedure applies to revision 31 or higher firmware. 1. Press and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds. The STOP LED will blink indicating that the board is in learn mode. 3. Cycle gate for 3 full cycles. The STOP LED will stop blinking indicating that the board is now ready for normal operation 4. Test the auto reverse sensitivity to ensure maximum safety protection. The current sensitivity adjustment pot may be adjusted to decrease or increase sensitivity.
8. Refer to the 835/836 Operator Control Board Manual to set other options such as program switch options and close timer adjustments. Installation is now complete. Note: Program switch #9 is no longer functional and the current sense may be readjusted at any time.

(This is also a handy way to test that the current consumption of the motor is within the normal limits) FIRMWARE: In the upper right area of the board there is a micro-processor that has a white label on it. This is the FIRMWARE of the system. Currently (May 2005) we are using firmware version V31.00.02. For troubleshooting versions of the firmware earlier then V31.00.00 consult your original instructions that were included with your system. Systems that are out of warranty may be upgraded to newer version firmware for a nominal fee.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with gate controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE. Periodically test the obstruction sensitivity to assure safe and proper operation. Do not test sensitivity by standing between the gate and the hinge or stop post. The CAUTION AUTOMATIC GATE signs should be clearly visible from both sides of the gate. Always insure that the gate has closed securely before leaving area. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access.
Use the emergency release only when the gate is not moving. A secondary entrapment device such as loop detectors, edge switches, and beam detectors are highly recommended and required to meet the UL325 standard. Install control devices such as keypads far enough away (5 feet or further) from any moving parts of the operator and gate to prevent possible injury. Do not install control box where the gate can come in contact with person using the push button on side of control box. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the gate or operator. All rollers should be covered to prevent injury. KEEP GATES PROPERLY MAINTAINED. Read the owners manual. Have a qualified service person make repairs to gate hardware. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance.
Test the gate operator monthly. The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the gate operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
APPLICATIONS
The Apollo Model 7300ETL Slide Gate Operator is designed to handle a slide gate up to 32 feet in total length (30 foot gate with 3 foot tail) and 1,000 lbs. A professional fence or gate dealer is recommended to assure proper installation. Apollo Gate Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Gate Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. A 12 Volt sealed battery (33 ampere hour minimum) is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:

OPERATOR INSTALLATION
Four 1/2 anchor bolts (not supplied) are recommended to mount the chassis. The holes should be drilled with a 1/2 concrete drill bit.
STEP 1. Set the operator on the pad as shown. Align the sprockets 3 to 5 inches from the inside surface of the gate. STEP 2. Mark the four mounting holes on the pad. STEP 3. Remove the operator and drill the holes according to the anchor bolt manufacturers instructions. STEP 4. Replace the operator and fasten to the pad.

STEP 1. Determine which direction the gate will open. The factory units are plugged into INPUT B for right hand opening as shown in Fig. 1. For left hand opening, disconnect from INPUT B and plug into INPUT A on the surge board as shown in Fig. 2.

The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition can only be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL connectors on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) should be opened and closed to reset the control board.
The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance. All limits should be set before beginning this procedure. This new procedure applies to revision 31 or higher firmware. 1. Press and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds. The STOP LED will blink indicating that the board is in learn mode. 3. Cycle gate for 3 full cycles. The STOP LED will stop blinking indicating that the board is now ready for normal operation 4. Test the auto reverse sensitivity to ensure maximum safety protection. The current sensitivity adjustment pot may be adjusted to decrease or increase sensitivity.
8. Refer to the 835/836 Operator Control Board Manual to set other options such as program switch options and close timer adjustments. Installation is now complete. Note: Program switch #9 is no longer functional and the current sense may be readjusted at any time.

PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
Once the operator is installed or if the control board is replaced, you will need to program the control board for proper current sensing. The operator should be functional and the open and close limits set. 1. Push and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds.
The STOP LED will blink indicating the board is in learn mode. 2. Cycle the gate three full times (must read open and close limit switches each cycle). The STOP LED will now stay illuminated. 3. Adjust the current sensitivity pot to insure safe operation
The current sensitivity may be readjusted at any time without relearning the board. Periodically check the current sensitivity for safe operation.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The Apollo 835/836 board is the standard board in all ETL compliant Apollo Gate Operators. Single gate systems use the 835 board (distinguished by MASTER and EMERGENCY BYPASS modular receptacles) and DUAL gate systems use the 836 board (distinguished by MASTER, SLAVE and EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacles). The 836 board may be used in single gate applications by simply turning PROGRAM SWITCH #3 to the OFF position and only using the MASTER receptacle of the board. Apollo 7000 ETL and 7100 ETL systems use a Stature Electric direct current motor while the Commercial 7200 ETL and 7300 ETL use a Bison direct current motor. Both motors are similar in design and thus trouble shooting for all of the slide gate systems is covered in one manual. Keep in mind that SLIDE GATE operators do NOT utilize the SMART ACTUATOR feature of the 835/836 board so Program switch #10 must ALWAYS be in the OFF position. Trouble Shooting the Apollo 7000/7100/7200/7300 ETL systems: 1. Check your battery! The battery in your gate operator is the power source for the entire system. If it is not adequately charged, the system will not operator properly. Test the battery by checking the voltage with a volt-meter while the battery is under load (gate operating). For AC charged systems unplug the battery charger before load testing battery. Battery voltage should be 11.5 volt DC or higher while the operator is running (battery under load). Program Switch Settings: At the upper center of the board there are 10 program switches. These switches enable and disable certain features of the Apollo system. DEFAULT setting of these switches is as follows: SINGLE GATE 1,2,3,5 ON (all others OFF) DUAL GATE 1,2,5 ON (all others OFF) LED ENABLE BUTTON: On the right side of the board half way down is the LED ENABLE button. Pressing this button once and releasing it enables the LEDs on the board for approximately 15 minutes. When the LEDs are enabled the STOP light should always be lit on the left side of the board. Other LEDs may be lit as well depending on the status of the operator. If the gate(s) are in the OPEN position, the OPEN limit indicator(s) should be lit. If the gate(s) are CLOSED, the CLOSED limit indicator(s) should be lit. (The OPEN and CLOSED LEDs should never be on at the same time) Any LEDs that are lit on the left side of the board or at the lower right corner of the board (except the STOP LED) indicate a TRIGGER from an accessory device connected at that location. Devices connected where an LED is lit should be removed before further testing is done. After the system is made operational these devices may be reconnected one at a time. Check for proper system operation after each connection. Current Sensitivity: At the top center of the board is the Current Sensitivity adjustment. It adjusts the amount of force the operator will exert before it senses an obstruction. As the wheel is turned counter clockwise, the operator will reverse more easily. As the wheel is turned clockwise, the operator will push harder. Any time the system CURRENT SENSES it will stop and reverse for two (2) seconds. If the system CURRENT SENSES a second time before fully opening or closing it will again reverse for two (2)_seconds and then go into a HARD SHUTDOWN (see below). Sensitivity should be set to a level that is sufficiently strong to open and close the gate in all conditions yet still sensitive enough to be safe. A good starting point is the one oclock position.

Activating the system: A momentary connection between activation inputs and ground (GND) is how the system is activated. At the upper left and bottom right of the board are terminals marked INP or INPUT. These terminals - when momentarily shorted to ground (GND) - will open, stop and close the gate with each activation. The button on the side of the box (swing gates ONLY) is connected to these terminals and may be used to activate the gate when the key is in the horizontal position. On our newest boards there is an OPERATE button at the upper left area of the board that may be used in the same manner. HARD SHUTDOWN: If the system has encountered an obstruction two times before fully opening or closing the HARD SHUTDOWN LED (upper right of board) will begin flashing indicating a Hard Shutdown situation. Check to see that any obstructions are removed from the gates path and then press the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button to restart the system. Left Hand / Right Hand Operation: All APOLLO Slide Gates are shipped from the factory wired to close to the left (when looking out of the property). It is suggested to install and adjust the operator as it comes from the factory then re-wire the system if necessary. The easiest way to determine if your system requires re-wiring is to use the LED Enable button. Once the LEDs are enabled, the OPEN LIMIT light should come on in the open position and the CLOSED LIMIT light should come on when the gate is closed. Should these be backwards make the following changes: From the MASTER plug there are five wires going to a terminal strip Reverse the RED with the BLACK - and reverse the ORANGE with the WHITE. To verify that the wiring has been changed correctly: Manually move the gate to the mid-way position and plug the main harness into the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle the gate should OPEN. If it closes the RED and BLACK motor wires must be reversed. Once it is verified that the EMERGENCY BYPASS does open the gate then check the limit switch wiring. Dis-engage the mechanical release and open the gate fully verify the OPEN LIMIT led is on. Close the gate fully verify the CLOSED LIMIT led. If the limits are backwards reverse the ORANGE and WHITE limit wires. Dual Gate Systems: Test dual gate systems individually. Turn program switch #3 ON (disables SLAVE side of board) and test actuators one at a time using MASTER side of board only. Confirm proper operation of each actuator. If both test 100% - then test together by connecting both actuators and turning program switch #3 to the OFF position. EMERGENCY BYPASS: At the bottom left of the board is the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle. Plugging the operator harness into this receptacle will OPEN the gate ONLY! It is intended to open the gate(s) should other methods fail. Note that if the motor draws more than 15 amps of current the fuse above the receptacle will blow. Since the operator will be moving the gate, a substantial depth is required for operator rigidity. If you are not sure how deep to set the post, contact a local fence installer for a recommendation.

Position the gate closed. Check that there is at least two feet of gate (or tail) that is not over the driveway. Set the post to the dimensions in Fig. A. The post should be level and square to the gate. The top of the post should be 2-1/2 inches below the intended chain height.

STEP 1. Weld the base plate onto the 4x 4 post as shown. The slotted holes should be perpendicular to the gate. The base plate should be level and parallel to the gate.
STEP 2. Bolt the main chassis on to the base plate using the four 3/8 bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts.
STEP 3. Assemble chain bracket with 5/16 U-bolt & hardware to each end of the gate as shown. Do not tighten at this time.
STEP 4. Align both chain bracket slots with the bottom teeth of the idler sprockets. Tighten all hardware.
STEP 1. Position the gate so that the operator is in the center of the gate. Connect chain bolt to the chain bracket as shown on both ends of the gate.
STEP 2. Attach the chain to the chain bolt using the master chain link. Do not tighten the chain bolts .
Note: A chain breaking tool may be required to reduce the chain to the proper length.
STEP 3. Check chain alignment with idler sprockets. Tighten both chain bolts allowing 1 inch of chain sag per every 10 feet of chain.

Wiring Instructions
STEP 1. Determine which direction the gate will open. The factory units are plugged into INPUT B for right hand opening as shown in Fig. 1. For left hand opening, disconnect from INPUT B and plug into INPUT A on the surge board as shown in Fig. 2.

STEP 2. Connect the two ring terminals on the connector end of the cable to the battery. The battery charger or solar panel should be installed at this time. Plug the connector into the Master connector on the circuit board.

If the limits require extensive adjustment use a 13/32 or 25/64 socket with a portable drill for course adjustment, then adjust manually for fine adjustment. 11

The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition may be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL inputs on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) should be opened and closed to reset the control board.
The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance. All limits should be set before beginning this procedure. 1. Press and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds and release. The STOP LED will blink indicating that the board is in learn mode. 3. Cycle gate for 3-4 full cycles. The STOP LED will stop blinking indicating that the board is now ready for normal operation 4. Test the auto reverse sensitivity to ensure maximum safety protection. The current sensitivity adjustment pot may be adjusted to decrease or increase sensitivity. Perform this procedure on a monthly basis to assure proper and safe operation.

Photo Eye Hookup Photo eye / safety loop wiring. Connect the positive power wire of the accessory to 12V. Connect the ground wire of the accessory to MAS (upper right area of the 835/836 board). When the gate operator begins opening (comes off of the closed limits) the MAS terminal will become a ground and will complete the flow of power to the accessory. This will power the accessory up and it will work as normal until the gate gets closed and the MAS terminal switches and the device will power down.

TROUBLESHOOTING
The Apollo 835/836 board is the standard board in all ETL compliant Apollo Gate Operators. Single gate systems use the 835 board (distinguished by MASTER and EMERGENCY BYPASS modular receptacles) and DUAL gate systems use the 836 board (distinguished by MASTER, SLAVE and EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacles). The 836 board may be used in single gate applications by simply turning PROGRAM SWITCH #3 to the OFF position and only using the MASTER receptacle of the board. Apollo 7000 ETL and 7100 ETL systems use a Stature Electric direct current motor while the Commercial 7200 ETL and 7300 ETL use a Bison direct current motor. Both motors are similar in design and thus trouble shooting for all of the slide gate systems is covered in one manual. Keep in mind that SLIDE GATE operators do NOT utilize the SMART ACTUATOR feature of the 835/836 board so Program switch #10 must ALWAYS be in the OFF position. Trouble Shooting the Apollo 7000/7100/7200/7300 ETL systems: 1. Check your battery! The battery in your gate operator is the power source for the entire system. If it is not adequately charged, the system will not operator properly. Test the battery by checking the voltage with a volt-meter while the battery is under load (gate operating). For AC charged systems unplug the battery charger before load testing battery. Battery voltage should be 11.5 volt DC or higher while the operator is running (battery under load). Program Switch Settings: At the upper center of the board there are 10 program switches. These switches enable and disable certain features of the Apollo system. DEFAULT setting of these switches is as follows: SINGLE GATE 1,2,3,5 ON (all others OFF) DUAL GATE 1,2,5 ON (all others OFF) LED ENABLE BUTTON: On the right side of the board half way down is the LED ENABLE button. Pressing this button once and releasing it enables the LEDs on the board for approximately 15 minutes. When the LEDs are enabled the STOP light should always be lit on the left side of the board. Other LEDs may be lit as well depending on the status of the operator. If the gate(s) are in the OPEN position, the OPEN limit indicator(s) should be lit. If the gate(s) are CLOSED, the CLOSED limit indicator(s) should be lit. (The OPEN and CLOSED LEDs should never be on at the same time) Any LEDs that are lit on the left side of the board or at the lower right corner of the board (except the STOP LED) indicate a TRIGGER from an accessory device connected at that location. Devices connected where an LED is lit should be removed before further testing is done. After the system is made operational these devices may be reconnected one at a time. Check for proper system operation after each connection. Current Sensitivity: At the top center of the board is the Current Sensitivity adjustment. It adjusts the amount of force the operator will exert before it senses an obstruction. As the wheel is turned counter clockwise, the operator will reverse more easily. As the wheel is turned clockwise, the operator will push harder. Any time the system CURRENT SENSES it will stop and reverse for two (2) seconds. If the system CURRENT SENSES a second time before fully opening or closing it will again reverse for two (2)_seconds and then go into a HARD SHUTDOWN (see below). Sensitivity should be set to a level that is sufficiently strong to open and close the gate in all conditions yet still sensitive enough to be safe. A good starting point is the one oclock position.

Activating the system: A momentary connection between activation inputs and ground (GND) is how the system is activated. At the upper left and bottom right of the board are terminals marked INP or INPUT. These terminals - when momentarily shorted to ground (GND) - will open, stop and close the gate with each activation. The button on the side of the box (swing gates ONLY) is connected to these terminals and may be used to activate the gate when the key is in the horizontal position. On our newest boards there is an OPERATE button at the upper left area of the board that may be used in the same manner. HARD SHUTDOWN: If the system has encountered an obstruction two times before fully opening or closing the HARD SHUTDOWN LED (upper right of board) will begin flashing indicating a Hard Shutdown situation. Check to see that any obstructions are removed from the gates path and then press the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button to restart the system. Left Hand / Right Hand Operation: All APOLLO Slide Gates are shipped from the factory wired to close to the left (when looking out of the property). It is suggested to install and adjust the operator as it comes from the factory then re-wire the system if necessary. The easiest way to determine if your system requires re-wiring is to use the LED Enable button. Once the LEDs are enabled, the OPEN LIMIT light should come on in the open position and the CLOSED LIMIT light should come on when the gate is closed. Should these be backwards make the following changes: From the MASTER plug there are five wires going to a terminal strip Reverse the RED with the BLACK - and reverse the ORANGE with the WHITE. To verify that the wiring has been changed correctly: Manually move the gate to the mid-way position and plug the main harness into the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle the gate should OPEN. If it closes the RED and BLACK motor wires must be reversed. Once it is verified that the EMERGENCY BYPASS does open the gate then check the limit switch wiring. Dis-engage the mechanical release and open the gate fully verify the OPEN LIMIT led is on. Close the gate fully verify the CLOSED LIMIT led. If the limits are backwards reverse the ORANGE and WHITE limit wires. Dual Gate Systems: Test dual gate systems individually. Turn program switch #3 ON (disables SLAVE side of board) and test actuators one at a time using MASTER side of board only. Confirm proper operation of each actuator. If both test 100% - then test together by connecting both actuators and turning program switch #3 to the OFF position. EMERGENCY BYPASS: At the bottom left of the board is the EMERGENCY BYPASS receptacle. Plugging the operator harness into this receptacle will OPEN the gate ONLY! It is intended to open the gate(s) should other methods fail. Note that if the motor draws more than 15 amps of current the fuse above the receptacle will blow. Also, the gate operator will not stop by its self at the open position. The plug must be removed to stop the gate. (This is also a handy way to test that the current consumption of the motor is within the normal limits) FIRMWARE: In the upper right area of the board there is a micro-processor that has a white label on it. This is the FIRMWARE of the system. Currently (May 2005) we are using firmware version V31.00.02. For troubleshooting versions of the firmware earlier then V31.00.00 consult your original instructions that were included with your system. Systems that are out of warranty may be upgraded to newer version firmware for a nominal fee.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with operator controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE/ARM. Test the operator monthly (see STEP 7 Programming the current sensitivity). The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non-contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the operator. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance. Auto Close feature not recommended without a safety device such as a loop detector or photo eye.
APPLICATIONS
The Toona Swing Gate Operator is designed to handle a swing gate up to 14 feet (Toona 5) and 20 feet (Toona 7) in total length. Apollo Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. If a electrical battery charger is used a 12 Volt sealed battery (33 ampere hour minimum) is recommended . If solar charging is used a 12 volt 105 ampere hour battery is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators can provide up to 500 operations in the event of The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy
(eliminating the need for costly trenching to remote entrances). If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations. BATTERY CONNECTIONS
If a electrical battery charger will be used, a 12 volt sealed lead acid battery rated for 33 ampere hour or more is recommended for the Toona 5 & 7. A 1.5 amp automatic battery charger is sufficient for most applications The battery may also be recharged with a solar panel. If solar charging is a requirement refer to page 4 or contact our customer service department at 800 226-0178 to help determine the solar panel size needed. A 12 volt 105 ampere hour battery is recommended with solar charging.

Do not operate the gate unless area around gate is in full view. Never let children operate or play with operator controls. Keep the remote control away from children. Always keep people and objects away from the gate. NO ONE SHOULD CROSS THE PATH OF THE MOVING GATE/ARM. Test the operator monthly (see page 14 Programming the current sensitivity). The gate MUST reverse on contact with a rigid object or stop when an object activates the non-contact sensors. After adjusting the force or limit of travel, retest the operator. Failure to adjust and retest the gate operator properly can increase the risk of injury or death. Arrange with local fire and law enforcement for emergency access. Always disconnect the battery or power source when making adjustments or repairs to any part of the operator. The entrance is for vehicles only. Pedestrians must use separate entrance. Auto Close feature not recommended without a safety device such as a loop detector or photo eye.
APPLICATIONS
The Metro Swing Gate Operator is designed to handle a swing gate up to 10 feet in total length and 400 pounds. Apollo Operators are available only through qualified dealers with an outstanding reputation in the fence and gate industry. These dealers will be able to recommend the proper equipment for particular applications. Apollo Operators are 12 Volt DC (Direct Current) powered. If a electrical battery charger is used a 12 Volt sealed battery (33 ampere hour minimum) is recommended . If solar charging is used a 12 volt 105 ampere hour battery is recommended. There are several advantages with 12 Volt DC systems:
Low voltage virtually eliminates risk of electrical shock. Battery powered operators can provide up to 500 operations in the event of The battery may be recharged with a trickle charger or by solar energy
(eliminating the need for costly trenching to remote entrances). If a trickle charger is used and a standard electrical outlet is not readily available, a licensed electrician will be required for proper electrical hook up. The following table should be used as a guide for capacity of operation of operators only, additional options may reduce the the daily usage. Please note that the charge capability of solar panels will vary with different geographical locations. Verify that the proper operator has been selected for this application. Determine the general location of the operator, access controls, and solar panel (if used). 1. Is there a suitable location for the operator? 2.Can the solar panel (if used) be mounted in an unobstructed area facing south? 3. Will additional solar panel cable be required? If additional cable is required, do not cut out the blocking diode when adding the cable. 4. Is electricity available (if required)? Consider safety and access options. Recommend if needed. 1. Mount the control box so that cable(8) will reach the motor. Do not mount the control box where the person using the push button on side of the box can come in contact with the gate. Use mounting hardware capable of supporting the weight of the control box with the battery installed. Set battery inside of control box with terminals toward the front (Do not use any battery with side terminals).

BATTERY CONNECTIONS
If a electrical battery charger will be used, a 12 volt sealed lead acid battery rated for 33 ampere hour or more is recommended for the METROETL. A 1.5 amp automatic battery charger is sufficient for most applications The battery may also be recharged with a solar panel. If solar charging is a requirement refer to page 4 or contact our customer service department at 800 226-0178 to help determine the solar panel size needed. A 12 volt 105 ampere hour battery is recommended with solar charging.
Connect the two ring terminals on the connector end of the cable to the battery. The battery charger or solar panel should be installed at this time. (RED is positive(+) and Black is negative
Plug the Metro operator connector into the Master connector on the circuit board.
The operator is now active. Limits must be set and tested. The current sense must now be programmed as shown on page 14. If the operator does not work, check the battery connections for proper polarity. If the connections are reversed, the REVERSE BATTERY POLARITY LED will be illuminated at the bottom center of the circuit board.

The 835/836 control boards incorporate a safety feature that will put the operator into a hard shutdown mode if the control board detects a current sense two consecutive times during a cycle. This hard shutdown condition may be reset by shorting the FIREBOX or UL inputs on the left side of the control board to ground. This condition may also be reset by pressing the HARD SHUTDOWN RESET button located toward the upper right hand corner of the control board. If a firebox is used in the installation, The firebox door (optional) can be opened and closed to reset the control board.
The following instructions must be followed at installation for proper safety assurance.

TIMER TO CLOSE DUAL GATE DELAY (Dual board only) Adjusts time before gate automatically closes Adjustable 5 to 70 seconds. Adjusts delay between master and slave operation 0-4 seconds (836 only with magnetic, solenoid, and other locking devices) sensitivity.

Hint: To test wiring of motor do the following 1. 2. Put gate 1/2 way closed and plug main harness into emergency bypass for 2 seconds. Gate should OPEN. If gate closes, reverse the red and black motor wires and re-test. Turn on LEDs on board and put gate in open position; the open LED should light. Put gate in the closed position; the closed LED light should light. If the opposite light lights reverse the orange and white wires. 13

PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS
Once the operator is installed or if the control board is replaced, you will need to program the control board for proper current sensing. The operator should be functional and the open and close limits set. 1. Push and hold the LED ENABLE button for five seconds.
The STOP LED will blink indicating the board is in learn mode. 2. Cycle the gate three full times (must read open and close limit switches each cycle). The STOP LED will now stay illuminated. 3. Adjust the current sensitivity pot to insure safe operation
The current sensitivity may be readjusted at any time without relearning the board. Periodically check the current sensitivity for safe operation.

Applies battery voltage directly to motor to open gate if control board fails. User must unplug before gate opens to maximum travel or 15 amp fuse will open. Fuse should be checked before returning gate to service.

Photo Eye Hookup Photo eye / safety loop wiring. Connect the positive power wire of the accessory to 12V. Connect the ground wire of the accessory to MAS (upper right area of the 835/836 board). Connect the relay wires of the accessory as normal: COM to GND. NO to SAFETY (#14) (for a safety device). When the gate operator begins opening (comes off of the closed limits) the MAS terminal will become a ground and will complete the flow of power to the accessory. This will power the accessory up and it will work as normal until the gate gets closed and the MAS terminal switches and the device will power down.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
IMPORTANTREAD CAREFULLY BEFORE BEGINNING INSTALATION
Read this instruction manual completely prior to installation. Installation should be performed by a professional installer. If welding is required, it should be performed by a qualified welder. Should electricity be required, use a certified electrician. Use UL Listed wiring with an insulation rating of at least 600 volts. Avoid splices in wiring. Solder and seal any splices in watertight junction box. Always disconnect power before servicing the unit. Be sure that all wiring to the unit is designed for direct underground burial. Do not run power wiring greater than 200 feet. Do not use onboard keypad power supply for anything other than the supplied transmitter. Locks, Loops, Strikes, and other devices must have their own power supply, or must use the power supply of the gate operator or garage door operator. Do not position this keypad within 5 feet of any moving parts of a vehicular gate operator. The user of the keypad should never be in an area that allows a vehicular gate operator to come in contact with the user while the keypad is being operated.
HINTS
1. Programming and set-up of the 950/951 keypad is accomplished via the keypad face and through the dip-switches located on the keypad circuit board. Refer to page 6 for a description/explanation on programming through the keypad face. Refer to page 7 for a description/explanation on dip-switch settings. 2. The 950/951 keypad provides both audio tones and led indicators during programming and normal use. Refer to page 5 for a description/explanation of these tones and indicators.

MOUNTING INFORMATION
Keypad door and circuit board can be removed from the housing. To remove, make sure that door is completely open and slide it to the right while pulling away from the control box. Please remember to remove the door while mounting the control box so that the circuit board is always protected.
The keypad can be mounted to any standard gooseneck stand using the enclosed carriage bolts. If you have a non-standard gooseneck mounting pattern, you can use the enclosed steel faceplate to modify for a correct fit. The faceplate can also be used to manufacture a custom gooseneck stand.
PROGRAMMING SUB-MODES
Access Code EntrySub-Mode 1 Sub-Mode 1 is for entering new access codes. The Model 950 keypad will hold 1000 4 digit codes. 4 digit code range is 0001 to 9991 Access Code RemovalSub-Mode 2 Sub-Mode 2 is used to delete individual 4 digit access codes from the keypad memory. Flash Code EntrySub-Mode 3 Sub-Mode 3 is used to enter a Flash Code into the keypad memory. The Flash Code will be deleted from the keypad memory after it is used once. The purpose of a Flash Code is so that the homeowner can enter a 1 time use code that will give a delivery or maintenance person access to the property. If the delivery/maintenance person returns at a later time without homeowner approval, the code will already have been removed and access will be denied. Latch Code EntrySub-Mode 4 Sub-Mode 4 is used for entering a single Latch Code into the keypad memory. The Latch Code can be entered by the homeowner to hold the gate open. The gate will remain open until the Latch Code is re-entered. The Latch Code is primarily used when a large number of vehicles need access to the property in a short amount of time. The homeowner can give guests access without giving away access codes. The red and green LEDs on the front of the keypad will flash while the keypad is in Latch Mode. Latch Code is not used with the

The very first time that you apply power to the keypad, you will hear a series of beeps followed by a regular repeating beep (1 beep at 3 second intervals) that lets you know you are in programming mode. Enter a 4 digit Master Code that only you will use for programming purposes.
