Mother-in-law comes into living room ,stands still, staring malevolently at Michelle until Michelle raises her head from the magazine. Michelle: Mama: What is it, Mama? Do you want something? Yes, I want something. I want a child for my son. You ve been married for five years today. You re all set to go out and enjoy yourself. Yet, your tummy is at flat as the day we married you. Have you no shame? (looks angry, but physically forces herself to breath slowly to calm down) Because today is my wedding anniversary and you are my husband s mother, I will pretend that I didn t hear you. (mimicking Michelle) because today is my wedding anniversary and you are my husband s mother So you know who I am. I gave birth to children, one of them stupid enough to pick you for wife. You Who are you? (at Michelle s stunned look, she continued). Yes, I say, who are you?

Michelle:

Mama:

(She sways around the room, exaggerating Mitchell s walk; picks up a book and pastes a silly smile on her face.) Oh, this is from M to M. I will always love you. Michelle: Mama, that s enough! You know, if I wasn t brought up to respect African values, I would have done a very terrible thing to you now. Why are you trying so hard to ruin our lives? As you proudly remember, you are a mother. Would you like your daughter to be treated the way you are treating me? Hey, Hey, Stop there. Who are you to mention my daughter? Can you not see that she has four children? She is not sapping her husband dry. You need to remember that this is my home. I believe you have outstayed your welcome. Say that again. I say, say that again. You barren woman! (Before Mitchell could retort, the door opens and Mike comes in from work. (Mama hisses and goes off to her room. Maybe she felt like it. After looking and hissing at me and my food? Look darling, Mama is old and she s my mother. What do you want me to do, drive her out? All I m saying is that the atmosphere she s creating in our home is unhealthy and must not be prolonged. She s my mother. And I m your wife and this is my home. And I pay the bills. The girl will cook her village meals and see to all her needs. (She stops to eat and drink. Yemisi does the same). Michelle: You know, I could have sworn that that girl meant to say, I be your wife. But that wouldn t make sense, would it? It would. But who brought the girl? Mike said Mama must have made the arrangement by phone and a cousin dropped the girl off. So that was it? The scene in the kitchen and you took her in? It wasn t up to me, was it? I called Mike immediately wanting to know why I wasn t informed? Guess what? He didn t know what I was talking about. When I explained he acted as surprised as I was. Only God knows which is which.

(nods) What I m about to say is borne out of love, but, of course, you don t have to agree to it It sounds to me like your 10 mother-in-law has married another wife for Mike. (Michelle is startled. Yemisi gives a sad Laugh).

Yemisi: Michelle:

Now, I have shocked you but it s something we must consider. Would Mike ..(choking and beginning to cry) would he do that to me? .No. (she lifts a hand to stop Yemisi) Don t bother explaining. Your children haven t started coming. That s all. (sneering) Tell that to my mother-in-law. Why do you make her so important? You d rather believe her than the doctors, your husband and best friend. Why choose the word of someone who hates you over those who love you? And another thing,Michelle, . it s very important that you stop defining yourself by what your in-laws call you.

Michelle: Yemisi:

You must begin to plan for a possible future without Mike. (shocked) But you preach against divorce. Yes, but you and Mike are only nominal Christians. You haven t what it takes to stop a divorce happening. And I m not saying it s going to happen. It s just good to be prepared. You must begin to save all you can. two, no matter what 11 happens refuse to divorce him. Even if he moves out don t divorce him. Three, stay in your house no matter what. The house is in both your names, not so? (nods) Don t sell your half of the house. You must make them all see that you are aware of your rights. At the end of the day if the worst happens, you lose Mike but won t be destitute. (starts to cry silently) This seems so unreal and yet things have greatly changed in my house. (waiter leaves) (Standing up) Excuse me, I need to go the bathroom. (She walks away and comes back for her bag) You didn t have to do that. Once bitten, twice shy. I ve told you I ve no intention of doing that to you again. But to others? (Chris looks at her but says nothing) A rose is a rose is a rose. (She walks off with her bag.) (Covers his face with his hand.) (Cat comes back and the food arrives.) [They start to eat.]

Chris: Cat:

Cat:

Chris: Cat: Chris: Cat: Chris: Cat: Chris:

Cat:

Why do you steal?

Chris:

Because I have to.

Cat:

What do you mean you have to? The fact that you have only one arm does not mean you can t find a job. After all, you steal with a lot of finesse with the same one arm. Where are the jobs for one-arm guys who didn t even make it to high school? Well ..but stealing is hardly an option ..Do your parents know? I ve no parents I ve never had.

Chris: Cat:

Chris: Cat:

You mean ..they died? (Chris keeps eating. He does not answer.) Surely, you didn t drop from the sky? No. I did not .. I was born with one arm. My father wanted no part of me and left. My mother struggled alone until I was one. Then, she left me on the door step of the town s Orphanage and disappeared. Of course, it was not difficult to identify the baby in that small town. I mean, how many babies are born with only one arm? Now, are you satisfied? I m sorry that I ve upset you. I m truly sorry. That s okay I stayed at the orphanage until I turned twelve. Then I ran away. I ve been living on the street ever since. (quiet) You know, I used to think my life was the most miserable but I m having serious re-thinks these days. What could possibly be wrong in your life?

Cat: Chris:

(laughs) Looks can be deceiving. So, a rose is not a rose is not a rose? Touch. Tell me about your miserable life? Well, ..I was born a bastard. I ve never known my father. So, we have a wee bit in common. Tell me more. I would love to although I don t know why. Maybe we are kindred spirits. Maybe. But I must get back to work. How about meeting me here tomorrow? I ll pay. From? (Chris does not answer) We ll meet tomorrow but I ll pay. And bring my bag along. Of course. (Cat signals to waiter) Your bill? Yes, but I want a corned-beef sandwich for take-away. (turning to Chris) That s for the cleaning lady in my office. Can you make that two sandwiches?

Who? I told you, my street mother. She s been watching out for me since I took to the street. Her name is Anna. I call her Mama A. She won t tell me how she came to be living on the streets. She s been there forever and I love her. I ve got to get back to work. It won t take a minute. Please. (Cat follows him. She was absolutely intrigued by the handsome, one-arm thief. They go into a side street. Behind a stack of boxes is a dirty old woman. Chris hugs her.)

Chris: Cat: Chris:

Chris:

Mama A. I bought your lunch. This is the nice lady that helped to buy it. Oh, you are a good boy. (She looks at Cat.) He is a good boy. A prince. You like him, don t you? Ahm . I ve got to go. (She walks away and Chris follows her.)

Old beggar: Old beggar: Cat:

Chris: Cat: Chris: Cat:

Are you angry? Why should I be? Because of what she said to you. I m not angry. I was just a little embarrassed because we ve only just met. So, you ll still meet me tomorrow. (Smiles) Yes, I will. And now, I must run. Good bye. See you tomorrow. Don t forget. And thanks. (Cat walks away with a puzzled look.)

Chris: Cat: Chris:

At other times, he moves to the window and stares out. Mike: No body will remember you when you are gone. They won t remember that I came into the world even. If only And they say there s nothing wrong ..If only

Just a coke for me. That all? Have you gone on a diet? (laughing) Maybe. (Waiter goes off.) Are you alright? I m okay. So why are you not eating? Nothing. At least, nothing to do with you. Chris: Cat: Chris: Cat: Chris: Cat: Chris: Cat:

Chris:

Can you take it one after the other? What wrong with Michelle? There s nothing wrong with Michelle .just this girl who s supposed to be helping Mike s mom because she can t stand Michelle. Well I don t know I think Mike is having an affair with the girl.

Cat:

Chris: Cat:

What makes you think so? I ve seen him looking at her like ..you know ..when a man has funny things in mind. And then, these days she and Mike s mom seem so happy and so ..so .arrogant. You know, like they ve got one up on Michelle. Has Michelle said anything? Of course. We talk about it all the time. She says she knows that something funny is going on but she can t figure it out. She s keeping a close look on Mike but he is just the same. If anything, he s more attentive to her. Come on. That guy has got everything. He can t jeopardize his marriage. But he can. He allows his mom to get away with everything and she wants Michelle out. As a matter of fact, Michelle suspects that girl Mary was brought as second wife for Mike. No. I mean Mike is a cool guy. He can t do that. I think he can. (Waiter brings food)

How are the Uzos? Fine. Michelle sent greetings. So, what have you been doing apart from work? Nothing much I met a very nice boy. He s a good listener and cares very much about people. You told him about me. (Not a question) Yes. And? He thinks we misunderstand each other. He grew up in an orphanage. But we have a lot in common. He understands me. Oh! . You know, I ve done a lot of thinking since you left. And .I came to the same conclusion as your friend s. What s his name? Chris. He s 21. Hmnn. Then, I also decided that I was tired of searching and offering. Needing to be valued .You said I was being used

Vera: Cat: Vera: Cat:

Mom What? He was born with only one arm. And grew up in an orphanage No, they abandoned him. My God . Poor boy . Poor thing. You still want to meet him? Of course Catherine, things you see on the outside don t count much. It s what the person is inside that counts. Come with your friend and spend the day with me. ..His parents died? Chris has only one arm.

Cat:

(smiling) Thank you . And mom, thanks for having me .. I mean you didn t abort me or anything and you took care of me. You must have wanted me. (starts to cry and goes and hugs Cat. Cat starts to cry too) Thank you for saying that. I know I ve not been a good mother but I really wanted to be. I m sorry. So sorry for the bad times. It s okay, Mom (Vera cries harder) 38 . SCENE 10

Characters:

Chris Cat On the beach. They are walking. Cat: ..That s why I feel that I ve just met my mother. It s a new beginning. I understand . I wish everything could end as nicely. (looking at him) Right. It s your turn now. Tell me what s bothering you? (silent a moment) What s bothering me? Hmnn what s not bothering me more like? .. I have a lot on my mind. Let s sit. (They sit on the sand) . I m listening.

Chris: Cat:

Chris:

Cat: Chris:

Well .. It s like this .. You are the second best thing in my life, the first being .. Mama A. Right . And I get to wondering just what is going to happen how long it s going to be for? Cat:

Chris:

(gives a bitter laugh) Beggars don t get to choose ..anything would do. But I ve never been given the chance. Acceptance is based on looks. Would you mind cleaning the yard for Michelle? She s sacked her gardener and is looking for a replacement. Would she have me? I think so. But, do you mind the job? Do you? (surprised) No. There s a great deal of dignity in decent labour. My mom drummed that into me .. She had to do all sorts of things to make ends meet. Nice lady, your mom. (smiles) I agree. So, if a guy has decent labour and looks forward to bettering himself, do you think the girl he likes would stick around him? (smiling) I think so . That s if he tells her where he lives?

Chris: Cat:

Are you disgusted? No, no ..I cry for you, for me, Mama A, Michelle, my mother. Perfectly fine human beings made imperfect by the world we live in. I mean, you and I had nothing to do with our births. But we were made to pay. We bore the stigma of not satisfying societal codes. Why is man so wicked to man? (says nothing but bends, picks some things and starts throwing them into the water) What do you use for bathroom?

Chris:

Cat:

Chris: Cat: Chris:

Sneak into a hotel s bathroom and be real quick. What about your clothes? You are always neat. Clothes are the easiest thing to nick. You stake out a wash line, look for the things you need, take them and make sure you are not caught. (gets up and hugs him to her side) It s going to get better. I promise. Does that mean I get my girl? Yes. You won t regret it I promise.

Cat: Cat: Chris: Cat: Chris:

Cat:

I know. I have good feelings about you (They smile at each other, hold hands and walk off)

SCENE 11 Characters: Mama Mary Mike Michelle The Uzo s home. Mama and Mary are waiting in the living room. Mike walks in. Mama: (smiling broadly) Ah, welcome my son. We ve been waiting for you. Sit down. (Still standing) Where s Michelle? She s not back. Sit down. I have good news. (Mike sits) Mama: God has answered my prayers. Your wife is pregnant. I don t know why she didn t tell you when you were with her this afternoon ..She has not had her period this past month. (Jubilantly) I told you, didn t I? You see how easy it has been? That one is barren. (quietly) Okay, Mama. It is good. Now, this is what we ll do . You ll leave for the village with Mary tomorrow. I will take

I will tell her when the time is right. Then, together we will come for the child. Please, let this be the end of this matter. (Mary starts to cry. Mike gets up to go and hears Michelle s car. He runs to the window and runs back to begin to usher Mary and Mama from the room.) Mike: Please, you must go to your room now. Please, Mama, get up and go. Sit down, Mary. (Michelle opens the door and walks in. Every one freezes) Michelle: (Looking at them all) What s going on here? (Silence) Mike? What going on? (Jumping up, turns to Michelle] Hey! May God help you. Mrs. Fine Madam, your time in this house is over. Your .. (cuts in quickly). Michelle, don t believe a word she says, it s all a pack of lies. Come, come, let s go in (goes to take Michelle s hand but Michelle does not yield) No, I m getting to the bottom of this.

Mama:

I say you are not madam anymore. (Pointing to Mary) This is the new madam. You want to know why? (Smiling) Because she is pregnant and (pointing to Mike) that man is the father of the child! (Stunned, looks at Mike) Mike? Is it true? I told you not to listen to her. I haven t had anything to do with that girl. (wailing) E do. O. E do. E dey comot for office come do. Oh, oh, wetin I go tell my papa? Shut up, girl. (turning to Michelle) Now, you see that you can t continue to stay here. You know now that you are barren. (snapping out of the shock) You . You, witch. This is what you ve been scheming all along, not so? But you are in for the surprise of your life ..all of you. Who are you calling a witch? Michelle, please, I can explain. Explain what? That you took you mother s maid to where exactly did you do this thing, Mike? (raising her voice) Where? In our bed? Mike in our bed? You couldn t use your mother s? She would have agreed gladly. .. You know something? You are a real traitor. I will never forgive you for betraying me like this. (turning to Mama) As for you. This house is partly mine. You have come into my house and hurt me. Now, you will pack your things and take yourself and your maid out of here. You have ten minutes before I call the police.

Michelle: Mike:

Mary:

Mama:

Michelle:

Mama: Mike: Michelle:

Mary:

Eh? Police? A beg o. I go go. I go go. (she runs out of the room)

Mama:

(Facing Mike) You are not talking, eh? You allow this .this thing that is not even a woman to drive your mother out of the house? After all I have done for you? (She starts to cry) When your father died, I suffered to raise you properly. Now, you slap me in the face like this. For who, eh? For that? (looking at Michelle disdainfully)

Mike: Mama:

(to Mama) Please, just go. You have ruined my life. Okay. I will go. Don t call me Mama again, do you hear? And when I die, don t come to my funeral. (Mike slumps into a chair and covers his face. Michelle walks to the bedroom. She stands looking at the bed and slumps to the floor, weeping. Then, she reaches into her bag for her phone and calls Yemisi.]

Michelle: Michelle:

Hello

. Hello

.. It s Michelle, Yemisi

Yes, I m crying. What you suspected has happened. Mary is pregnant with Mike s child. (She begins to howl) And you tell me I m not barren. (She continues to cry). No, there s no need for you to come, really. After all this? I gave them ten minutes to leave or face the police .Then I came in here. Wait . (She listens to sounds coming from the living room) I think they are gone. I don t know, Yemisi. I don t know and I don t care. He can drop dead for all I care. God knows I mean it. Do you know where he was doing it all the time? In our bed, Yemisi. Our bed (crying badly again)

Michelle:

Michelle:

Michelle:

Michelle: Michelle:

From work while I was out and back again to the office. No, no. Really, I m fine. I ll come. Tomorrow. When you close from work. Yeah thanks. (She gets off the phone but is still on floor, head buried in her laps.)

ACT THREE SCENE 1 Characters: Michelle Yemisi Yemisi s flat. Michelle knocks. Yemisi: Michelle: Yes? It s me----Michelle. (Door opens. They hug and go in. Michelle sprawls on the couch. Yemisi sits opposite.) Yemisi: Michelle: How has it been? The pain?

(Yemisi nods) Michelle: Worse than anything you can imagine . I keep wondering what I could have done to stop it from happening . He used to tell me I was enough for him (She jumps up. Takes a deep breath, talking to herself and pacing up and down). (slowly) I am . NOT going to cry. Mike is not worth it. Let it

Michelle: Yemisi:

Michelle:

(starts to cry) He said he loved me and yet got so intimate with that woman in our bed. What kind of beast is this man, eh? A despicable beast. (Silence) He says he did it for me. He did it for poor Michelle. Who is still barren at 35?

Yemisi:

I am 35 and haven t been married. What would you have me say? (Michelle looks at Yemisi)

Michelle: Yemisi: Michelle:

You know, I never thought I d envy you. Envy me! What s there to envy? Your singleness. I used to wonder how you could enjoy living alone. Now, I wish I d never married. You are wrong, you know. I don t enjoy living alone and I really want to get married. You could have done so last year. That guy seemed quite okay to me. He was even your church member.

Yemisi:

Michelle:

Yemisi:

I told you why. He wasn t the one for me. I prayed for some time with others and I knew I had to let him go because God sees that which I cannot see. But He hasn t sent another? He will. You are not at all bothered? . Not that you are missing any thing. There s nothing in marriage except heartache. All men are rats. (Smiles) That s why I want to be sure . It isn t that I m not bothered. I get plenty bothered. My parents constantly remind me that I m getting old. Demon voices tell me that no man is going to want an old maid like me But I choose to see myself as Jesus sees me. I define myself by who I am in Him. (Stares) You know, I think that s another thing I envy you for. Your contentment. You don t have to. You know what to do. I ve told you time and again. (Slowly) Give my life to Jesus. Are you ready now to do it? Right now? I I don t think I m ready.

Why are you still doing this? (angry) If you think it s just the physical bed, then you are more heartless than I thought. Michelle, I ve begged and begged you . I don t know what to do. .. ..I ve told you it had nothing to do with my feelings for you .. It wasn t even love making. It was just sex. And you didn t enjoy it at all? Pastor:

You need to understand something. . Only God can help you out of all your troubles. And for that to happen, you need to agree with Him. What does that mean? This is what it means. God works by His spoken word. He made the world by His spoken word and has sustained it by His word. Things work out in the lives of God s children when they uphold God s word no matter what the situation says. Oh .. Okay. I think I get it.

Michelle: Pastor:

Michelle: Pastor: Michelle: Pastor:

(looking at her) The question then is, are you God s child? I should imagine so. Wasn t I created by God? Yes. But it doesn t end there. God created each of us with the freedom to choose between good and bad, between Him and Satan. You only become His when you make a deliberate decision to hand over your life to God to control. Have you ever made such a decision? No. But I try to live a good life. I try to be good to others. Isn t that choosing good over evil? Yes. But God is so loving that He won t force His control over your life unless you willingly ask Him to. Do you want to do that? Well Yemisi has been talking to me about it .. Let me ask a question. If God is so loving, why is there so much pain and misery even in the lives of those you call God s children, like Yemisi? Is Yemisi miserable?

Michelle:

Pastor:

Michelle:

Pastor:

Michelle: Pastor:

Well, no. But it s not as if everything is fine in her life. Exactly. Not everything is fine in her life right now but she knows they will be because God s word says so. That s why Yemisi is not miserable. So being God s child does not exempt one from life s troubles? No. As a matter of fact, God s children face more challenges than others because they stand for God s ways. The world does not like God s ways. But God helps His own to overcome all things. At least, that s honest now, I ll get over this pain? That s a promise. (Silence) ..So ,if I give my life to God right

Michelle: Pastor:

Michelle:

Pastor:

Michelle: Pastor:

Okay, I ll do it. I think am ready now. First of all, you must acknowledge the fact that you are a sinner and ask for God s forgiveness. Do you agree with that? Yes. Nobody is perfect. I know I ve done some bad things. Good. What do you know about Jesus? I believe what the Bible says. I go to church, you know. I know, but this is about you; your personal belief. Okay. I believe that He is the Son of God, that He truly walked the earth and died for the sins of the world. The Bible says there s eternal life through Jesus. Praise God. So, it shouldn t be hard for you to ask Him to be Lord of your life?

Michelle: Pastor: Michelle: Pastor: Michelle:

Pastor:

Michelle: Pastor:

(shakes her head in no) Okay. Let s pray. Repeat this prayer: Father, I have sinned. I ask through Jesus, Your son, that you forgive me. I hand over my life to you and I thank You. Amen (repeats prayer) You are a born-again child of God now. Just like that? Just like that. You believe it, you confess it and then you begin to live it based on God s word, the Bible. (nods) That means you must read your Bible every day. It s very important to go to church also. Mix with other Christians because that is your family in God. (nods) About what has happened to you, the starting point to overcoming the pain is forgiveness. In the book of Matthew 6:12. Jesus taught us to forgive others even as He forgives us. I know. It s just that it s so hard. I can t go beyond the pain. . The picture of him and the woman dances before me always. It s like a knife has been thrust into me again and again and again. I m so sorry . God knows your pain. He s waiting to heal those wounds if only you are willing. Willing to do what? To forgive. I m sorry to tell you that until you forgive those who have wronged you, your life remains bitter. You lose out

on all God s blessings in this life and all life after death Think about it. (Silence. Then Michelle starts to cry) Michelle: Michelle: Pastor: Michelle: Pastor: (crying) oh, God, help me. (Still crying) I only have to be willing? Yes. Okay ..I am. (Speaking with conviction)

..

God bless you. (He begins to pray for her) Father, please take the unforgiveness out of Your daughter and give her Your peace in Jesus name. Amen.

Pastor: Michelle: Pastor: Michelle: Pastor:

How do you feel now? (considering) Hmnn .kind of relieved. Yes. You are relieved. I am very happy and I know Jesus is. Thank you. Thank you very much. You must try to show your forgiveness in practical ways. Try to be nice to those who have hurt you. It s difficult but remember you are not doing it alone. The God of all powers is in you and with you. You can do it. I believe you. I can do it. I shall do it. Good. That s the first step. Your counseling is not over. Come back this time next week. (Smiling and getting up) I will. Thank you so much. Thank God. Next week.

(Silence) Cat: I hope you don t mind my asking but doesn t it break your heart the way your husband is these days? Like he s ill or something? .And always he s in the bedroom. I know I m working on it. At least, we ve been eating together again.

Michelle:

Cat: Michelle:

The hurt is going away? Yes, but slowly. Every day the pains comes, I give it to Jesus and thank Him for being my burden bearer. It works. I don t feel that all-consuming anger anymore. I m glad. You had a good thing going and I m glad it s coming back. . I wish my mum and I had this kind of counseling ..(She lets out a long breath.) . All those wasted years . Still, you are okay now and making up for those years. (Smiling) Mum s amazing. She s so sweet now and really loves Chris. Who would have thought she had such goodness in her? (Chris knocks at that moment. Cat opens the door.)

Cat:

Cat: Chris: Michelle: Chris: Michelle: Chris:

Chris. Good afternoon, Mrs Uzo. Good afternoon, Chris. How are you? Good And Mama A? How is her garden? Great. Everything is great for once. Mama A can t get over your giving your boys quarter to us, all furnished too. She says you are an angel and you shall have the first produce of her garden. (Laughing) Isn t that nice? Anyway, you guys are great, too. (Looking at Cat) I think I need to go in for awhile. No, no. We re going outside to talk.

Michelle: Michelle: Cat:

Michelle:

Stop it, Cat. You live here. It s your home. So, receive your visitor properly please. Besides, I would have thought you d be happy for me to go to Mike. (Surprised & delighted) Oh, is that where you were going? Please, please go. (Smiling) Alright. See you guys later. (She goes to the bedroom. Chris and Cat sit down)

Chris:

No, I m cool. Everything is cool ..it s just that .. well, I ve always wondered if my parents ever loved me. My father, he must have looked forward to having me, don t you think? I mean before I came out and he saw my deformed person? (Moves close to him and hold his hand) Oh, Chris And mother, she definitely must have loved me, don t you think so? She kept me for a whole year. Maybe she would have kept me all through if she was able to. I believe so. She dropped you where you had a chance, no matter how small, to live. (bitterly) Some life!

Cat: Chris:

Chris, you are a strong person. You ve survived that terrible beginning. You must stop looking back. Look to the future our future .. You are very much wanted now. (Looking at her) You are right. It was the luckiest day in my life when I snatched your bag. You (pounding him playfully on the back)

Can I see the Pastor? Let me check with him. Your ten O clock appointment is here Sir. Yes, Sir. (Replaces the phone) (to Michelle) Please go in. Thank you. (Michelle goes in) Michelle: Good morning.

Pastor: Michelle: Pastor: Michelle: Pastor: Michelle:

Good morning. Please sit down. Much better, thank you.

How are you today?

How are things between you and your husband? Better. Are things back to normal? Some things .. We re eating together ..talking some ..(Eyes downward) I m still sleeping on the living room couch. Let me ask you a question, if you were the one who had offended, how would you feel to be treated the way you are treating your husband? (shrugs) Your forgiveness toward your husband is not complete until you cross that bridge. I know. You ve got to try. The Bible warns married people not to expose themselves to temptation by withholding oneself from one s spouse. You are creating a very dangerous situation for your marriage. Even when I didn t withhold myself, did he not mess up? Would you like it to happen again? (doesn t answer) Deep inside you still love your husband otherwise you won t be here. (nods)

SCENE 6

Characters: Cat Vera Vera s kitchen. Cat & Vera are cooking. Cat: So she went like this (she demonstrates the squat) And the trousers just went abah split right down the middle at back.

(They laugh and laugh) Vera: Cat: That will teach her not to wear skin tight trousers. Hmnn. (They keep cooking) Vera: Cat: Vera: Cat: So have you decided? What? Moving back home. Mum It s the first time we ve been this close want things to go bad again. I don t

Vera:

They won t. You know why? Because we know who we really are. We are in touch with our real selves and our real selves are not the monsters we projected. Well .I don t know You don t want to move far from Chris? . You know, it s not very healthy that you two live in the same compound. A little distance can make your relationship sweeter and besides, Chris is welcome here anytime. You know that. It s not just Chris. You know Michelle is going through a bad patch. But you said things are improving. Yes. But I feel I shouldn t leave just yet. I understand. Michelle was there when you needed her. (nods)

(smiling) In that case, should I begin to tidy up your room? (smiling) I think so. (hugging Cat) It will great this time. I promise. (nods and hugs back) (Vera moves to check on the food. She tastes it.)

Vera: Cat:

This is ready for us. Right. I m starving. (They dish for themselves, carry the plates to the table and start to eat.)

Vera: Cat: Vera:

So, Mama A is selling nuts now? Hmnn .Chris says they are beginning to save money.

I m so glad for them. You won t know that they are not related to look at them. Chris wants to take a course in information technology when he s save enough. How wonderful! ..Will he let me help? No, no, Mum. This is for his self-respect. Why, he needs help. I know . Maybe if you offered it as a loan, but, don t do it until later.

Cat:

Vera: Cat: Vera: Cat:

Vera: Vera:

Agreed. (Waves the thanks off) (They eat in silence for a while)

Vera:

You know, this year has been my year for growing up .. in my decision to respect my person, our relationship, knowing people like the Uzos and Chris and Mama A. Especially Chris and Mama A. I feel the same way. It makes me want to ask people, who are you? Who are you, really?..... I think of Chris and Mama A and all they ve been through and what they are making of the first break they ve had in life. Who would have thought that a beggar and a thief would have such sterling qualities? ..On the other hand, I can name a few some bodies, those people that society respects because of their birth, or money or education or position .. I can name a few who are really nothing but trash because of what is inside them. I know Mum. I agreed with you totally.

SCENE 7 Characters:Michelle Pastor

Pastor s office. Michelle and Pastor are in counseling. Michelle: This one just seems so big. Everything that is good sense says not to do it. Yet, I feel this pull at my heart. What should I do? It would be a wonderful thing to do. That is if you ll be able to love the child as you own. Yes, that s my biggest problem .. I don t know why I m bar .. (Raising her hand) You don t have to say it .I m not barren. Still I don t know why my children haven t come .. I wasn t promiscuous . Mike was my first real boyfriend. Okay, we had pre-marital sex but I never did abortion because I never got pregnant. Maybe God is punishing me for the pre-marital sex? Is that it, Pastor? Pastor: In truth, I don t know. I do know that God is not vindictive but every sin carries a consequence. It s a spiritual law. But then, I know people who were virgins till marriage whose blessings of children were delayed. They held on to God s word and God didn t fail them. So, you are positive that mine will come. Quite. Especially now that you are a child of God and seeking to please Him. Another thing bothering me about this thing is this: I sincerely believe that I ve forgiven my mother-in-law and Mary. If I take the child I would want it understood that the child is mine. They can visit once in a while, not to stay. Just a little visit. Is that mean of me? No. You would be within your rights. So, you think I should go for it?

Of course, it doesn t begin to thank you for all your help All thanks go to God. You must know that if you were not willing to be helped, you would never have got the help. I must say I m very proud of you. (smiling) Thank you. And thank you for this. Let s pray. (Pastor prays) Father, please grant your daughter the strength to do thing. In Jesus name, Amen.

You are too kind. Here. (hands over a coffee mug) Thanks. Come. Sit for a moment. I have a little talk. (alarmed) What is it? (smiles) Relax. Everything is fine. Right. (He sits beside her on the bed) I think I would have to adopt Mary s baby. (surprised, turns to face her) Michelle please, you don t have to do that, I ve caused you enough pain. It s okay. I want to do it. The child is yours. I don t want him or her growing up with the kind of insecurities that Catherine had. Besides, whether I like it or not, the child will be there. It s better to take her in as my own. (unbelieving. He slips to his knees) I don t deserve you, Michelle. Thank you, thank you, Michelle. I will never forget this. (pulling him up) All the thanks must go to Jesus. I would never have done any of it by my puny strength. You know I would like to meet this Yemisi s Pastor.
