CEng 1002: Strength of Materials

Assignment

1. The two steel members are joined together using a 60 degree scar weld. Determine the average normal and average shear stress resisted in the plane of the weld.

2. The joint is subjected to the axial member force of 5 kN. Determine the average normal stress acting on section AB and BC. Assume the member is smooth and is 50mm thick.

3. The beam is supported by a pin at A and a short link BC. If P= 15 kN, determine the average shear stress developed in the pins at A, B, and C. All pins are in double shear as shown, and each has a diameter of 18mm.

4. Nylon strips are fused to glass plates. When moderately heated, the nylon will become soft while the glass stays approximately rigid. Determine the average shear strain in the nylon due to the load P when the assembly deforms as indicated.

5. The material distorts into the dashed position shown. Determine the average normal strain that occurs along the diagonals AD and CF.

6. A tension test was performed on a steel specimen having an original diameter of 1.278 cm and gauge length of 5.08 cm. The data is listed in the table. Plot the stress-strain diagram and determine approximately the modulus of elasticity, the yield stress, the ultimate stress, and the rupture stress. Use a scale of 1 cm= 54.29 MPa and 1 cm = 0.02 cm/cm. Redraw the elastic region, using the same stress scale but a strain scale of 2.54cm= 0.001 cm/cm.

7. The rigid beam rests in the horizontal position on two 2014-T6 aluminum cylinders having the unloaded lengths shown. If each cylinder has a diameter of 30 mm, determine the placement x of the applied 80-kN load so that the beam remains horizontal. What is the new diameter of cylinder A after the load is applied? al =0.35

8. The rigid bar is supported by the pin-connected rod CB that has a cross-sectional area of 14 mm2 and is made from 6061-T6 aluminum. Determine the vertical deflection of the bar at D when the distributed load is applied.

9. The rigid beam is supported by a symmetrical arrangement of bras of equal area A and length L. Bars AB and CD have a modulus of elasticity E 1 and bars EF and GH have a modulus of elasticity E 2 . Determine the average normal stress in each bar if a couple moment M o is applied to the beam.

10. A steel bar of rectangular cross-section, 10 cm deep and 5 cm wide, is bent in the planes of the longer sides. Estimate the greatest allowable bending moment if the bending stresses are not to exceed 150 MN/m2 in tension and compression.

11. The I-section shown below is bent by couples of 2500 Nm about Cx and 500Nm about Cy. Estimate the maximum bending stress in the cross-section, and find the equation of the neutral axis of the beam.

12. Estimate the elastic section modulus and the maximum longitudinal stress in a built-up I-girder, with equal flanges carrying a load of 50 kN per meter run, with a clear span of 20 m. The web is of thickness 1.25 cm and the depth between flanges 2 m. Each flange consists of four 1 cm plates 65 cm wide, and is attached to the web by angle iron sections 10 cm by 10 cm by 1.25 cm thick. (Cambridge)
