The year is 1910 One hundred years ago! What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1910: The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower ! The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as substandard. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The Five leading causes of death were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas , Nevada , was only 30! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadnt been invented yet. There was no Mothers Day or Fathers Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldnt read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health! Eighteen percent of households had at least one fulltime servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U. S. A. ! Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years!

PLAN AN ENRICHING SUMMER FOR YOUR CHILDREN Still Time to Register for 2011 Summer Program at Youth Center The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) is planning an exciting series of enrichment programs this summer. Open to children in Kindergarten through 6th grade, the series includes art experiences, games, recreation, learning opportunities, and snacks centered on the weekly themes. Space for each program is limited and registration is open to members and non-members. Children from communities outside Hoosick are welcome to attend. The 2011 themes include: H-2-Ohhhhh (July 11-15) Fun and games to beat the heat! Puppet Studio & Stage (July 25-29) Create puppets large and small and then perform! Fun & Folksy Art (August 8-12) Exploration of art from different cultures. Top Chef for Kids (August 22-26) Get creative in the kitchen! Children can register for all four programs or can pick and choose from the themes. Some programs fill up faster than others, so do not delay in registering. Each program runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. Aftercare is provided until 6 p.m. if needed for an additional fee. Children should dress to mess and bring their own lunch. Snacks will be provided. On particularly hot days, a change of clothing and a water bottle are suggested. Each enrichment program ends with a free celebration to which parents and friends are invited. The celebration allows participants to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the week. Previous years celebrations have included plays, art exhibits, fashion shows, dining experiences, and set designs. Pre-registration is required. Register online at www.hoosickyouth.org or by calling Aelish Nealon at 518-686-9050.

Patriot: A person who loves his country and zealously defends its interests. Websters dictionary. BE A PATRIOT AND HELP SHAPE THIS COUNTRYS FUTURE! I believe there are patriots who

The veterans of our country are our best examples of commitment to the values for which our country stands. Take a few moments and think of the Patriots who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us, in this great Republic. Think of how wonderful our country is, compared to others. Think, and be grateful for all things and opportunities we already enjoy, many of which would not be present if not for our devoted veterans. I think our country presently is experiencing great challenges. The survival of liberty is at stake. If all of us would just be better Patriots, whether in or out of
uniform, and stand up for and demand that our rights, values and freedoms be maintained...THAT in itself would be a great tribute to all the veterans who have served and who are presently on duty around the world.
Whenever I see a service person in uniform I enjoy a sense of confidence and security, and a
renewed feeling of Patriotism. My gratitude goes out to all of our wonderful military for all the great services they perform. To those who have walked the walk stand tall, you are true Patriots. We the People Salute You. Sincerely, Rich Entwistle, owner of The Stovery in Argyle, New York. PLEASE STOP BY THE STOVERY AND PICK UP A FREE POCKET SIZE COPY OF OUR CONSTITUTION. The Stovery - Home of Soothing Fires COUNTY YOUTH HAVE THE CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, AND TALENTS! Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at the 2011 Warren County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 6th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 5 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged face to face based on the capability of the youngster, and not by comparing one youngster and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 6th from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the fairgrounds. A youth talent show is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th. The talent show is guided by NYS Fair guidelines and the top winners have the option of attending the NYS Fair Talent Show. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. Please note all exhibitors and their families should plan to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy as there will be no food vendors on the grounds. For more information on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 668-4881) or visit Extensions web site at: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/warren/ CHAPMAN EXHIBITS STODDARD PHOTOS OF WATERFALL IN THE ADIRONDACKS: A new exhibit featuring twenty original Seneca Ray Stoddard photographs of waterfalls in the Adirondacks is now on view at the Chapman Historical Museum. Included are popular falls located on the Hudson, Raquette and Ausable Rivers, as well as lesser known falls in remote locations in the central Adirondacks places that today still are accessible only by foot. Examples are Roaring Brook Falls on Giant, Buttermilk Falls on the Raquette, Surprise Falls on Gill Brook near Lower Ausable, and Silver Cascade in Elizabethtown. The photos will be on display until July 3rd. In 1864, when Seneca Ray Stoddard relocated to Glens Falls from Troy, NY, he first worked as a sign painter, but soon took up landscape photography. Several times Stoddard made treks through the Adirondacks to photograph the sights that drew tourists to the region. Abundant waterways and the steep terrain made for many scenic cascades and falls, which became popular destinations for travelers. For the next 50 years he sold his images of these falls to tourists visiting the region. The Chapman Historical Museum is located at 348 Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY. Public Hours are Tuesday Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, noon to 4 pm. For more information call (518) 793-2826.
A NEW FIRE STATION IS BEING PLANNED FOR THE SALEM VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INC. ON NYS RTE 22 SALEM, NY. We currently have 4 fire trucks, of which 2 fire trucks are housed in a 1850 building that the volunteers own and it is way to small to serve our needs and the other 2 fire trucks are housed in a building that is owned by the Village of Salem. With this current set-up and the way that the fire dept operates this is costing the taxpayers more money because we have to have turnout gear in both buildings, double utility bills, etc. If we had 1 building we could house all 4 trucks together, have all of our PPE together, eliminate duplication of utilities and etc. With the new building when its time to order a new fire truck then we can spec one out that meets the needs of the communities that we protect and serve and meet the fire department needs. The bay area would be 4624-4900 sq ft in size compared to the current 800 sq ft and the meeting area would be 2912-3000 sq ft in size. Neither of the current buildings can be remodeled or expanded because of site restrictions and we are trying to be proactive now and provide a facility that will allow for future growth.Roughly 15yrs ago the fire department formed a new building committee to explore ideas of building a new firehouse and since then there has been a lot of talk and NO forward progress. The membership wants a new firehouse just like the people in the community. We are in the process of starting a capital fundraising campaign for our new firehouse. The fire department has $50,000.00 set aside already to be put towards the estimated $400,000.00 cost of the new building. We need to raise $200,000.00 before we start phase one of the construction project. We all know that there is a very limited economic base within our fire protection areas and people dont have the resources to go out and pay the extra taxes that it would take for a bond measure. As soon as we reach our goal and funding is secured we will start building. With in-house helpers and people who are willing to help out we can also save on other costs and reduce the overall costs even more. Our goal from start to completion would be 3-6 months. The new building would also be able to hosts meetings, gatherings, and community events something that has been missing from the Salem community since the old American Legion burnt some 20plus yrs ago. We have looked at applying for grants but with all of the legal obligations that are attached to a grant for a new building the price tag would probably more than double, so we want to raise monies through fundraisers. The new building would also be equipped with a new generator in case of power outages. We need to be self sufficient in case a disaster strikes. So please help us out and if you make a donation label it new firehouse. We are a 501(c)3 not for profit. If you have any questions contact: Steven Saunders President @ 518-854-7516 and leave a message or send an email to salemfd4434@yahoo.com.
